Weak connection

We have a Wireless - N Gigabit Router, model WRT310N V2. Our connection to our X-Box live has never been good, often lagging, often letting the person playing stay in the game, but not really play in actual time. Our connection to our iPods are always the lowest or second to the lowest signal strength. Our laptop connection shows a low signal strength as well, no matter how close or far we are to the router. I tried to read the advice on the X-Box live problems & thought about trying to solve the issues for that with that advice, but it doesn't seem to be our only problem. I'm not a computer wiz or trying to be, I can try to follow simple instruction... please advise!

Make sure that the modem is connected to the router on the Internet Port and computer to the router on the Ethernet port.Now,Hard-reset the router for 1 minute, power cycle the router.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case..
Now,check...if you are able to login then,re-configure the router.
If you are unable to login then, check the ip address on the computer which is connected to the  router...Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to open the setup page again. You can also try using the different computer.

  • WMP600N - weak connection and low signal - Windows 7 x64

I bought the WMP600N because Linksys and Microsoft listed it as 'compatible' for Windows 7 x64.
    My experience:
    - unstable and weak connection
    - pings to websites like google.com drops, average: 1 out of 3
    - low signal, on the same spot my three years old HP-laptop with 'a build in wireless card' has full signal strength in Windows 7
    - it works well under Windows XP (32 bit)
I'am convinced that drivers for the WMP600N are not ready for Window 7 x64. Linksys (or Ralink, which developed the chipset), please release a proper driver for the WMP600N!

I'm not sure about you guys, but I use WMP600N and  running Windows 7 64bit without any issues. The driver that I'm using now is Driver Version: 3.0.2.0, Driver Provider: Ralink Techonolgy Corp, Driver Date: 6/19/2009. Here's what I did when I upgrded my wireless adapter. 1. Uninstall the original wireless driver from device manager. 2. Turn off the computer and phisically removed the wireless adapter from my computer. 3. Pop in the new WMP600N and turn on the computer. 4. Windows 7 then automatically detects the new adapter and intall the proper driver for it. Well, that's all I did. The whole process is very simple and straight forward.

Check your logs as indicated in System Profiler, check Airport card type, there are 2 to my understanding, Atheros and Broadcom. I have both flavors of black macbooks, the older one with Atheros card doesn't appear to have the problem but it is in the same room as the router.
If your problem is as described above the only current fix is performing an Archive & Install back to 10.5.2. Most Leopard DVD's are 10.5.1 so you would have to apply the 10.5.2 combo update after performing the A&I. Going back to 10.5.2 should restore Airport card performance.
Note: If your router is in the same room, you might also try going outside with the laptop and testing connectivity, N is supposed to work better farther away (assuming the WIFI card is performing correctly).
All the testing I have done (3ea Archives and Installs) shows the problem is fine with 10.5.2 and only breaks when 10.5.3 or higher is applied. Since I can "restore" and fix the problem, it tells me it is a software problem initiated with the release of 10.5.3. The logs should verify that.

  • T430 & DockSeries 3 - Weak connection

    Hello everybody!
I have an issue with my current setup. I'm using a T430 with a Dock-Series 3. (The big ohne zwisch two DVIs und DPs)
The connection between them seems to be a bit weak. For example when I close the DVD-Rom not very carefully the connection get's lost and the T430 have to initialis the peripherie again. (Monitors, external HDDs etc.) Of course this causes crashes when I'm using data drom the external devices.
The thing to do at the moment is: DON'T TOUCH THE NOTEBOOK OR THE DOCK!
So my Question is: Is this quite normal? Or should I do a RMA für the Dock?
(hope my Englich is not to poor today :x)
    Greetings,
    Sören

have a look at the connectors, to make sure it is not dirty or have sign of bent pins, etc.
If there is nothing that you can see, then obviously warranty repair (which means a new dock) would be something that you should seek (provided that you still have warranty on the dock).

  • Weak connection after Leopard upgrade

I just upgraded to Leopard. Afterwards I noticed that the Airport icon is not at full strength. Only two of the three bars are active. Is this a result of the upgrade and do i need to do something else. I have a connection but it seems slower or I assume so because of the weak icon.

I have the same exact problem after upgrading my PowerBook G4 to Leopard. All my other computers (MacBook Pro, MacBook, iPhone) work fine using the same Airport Extreme Base Station. What used to be consistently 4 bars has now dropped to 2 bars (computer is about 6 feet away from the base station). The connection is also slower and the range significantly reduced. Placing the computer right next to the base station shows only 3 bars...
This started immediately after the Leopard update and is consistent across several Wifi routers I've used (one Airport Extreme and one Linksys).
Looking at similar posts, people seems to have the same issue with Airport signal strength with PowerBook G4s and Leopard. I'm convinced this is a driver/Leopard defect. Apple, please look into this!!

  • Slow + Weak connection (to pc equivalents in same house)

My mbp records speed tests about 4 mbps slower than the other pc laptops in my house. Furthermore, the pc laptops can pick up my other house's wireless connection (about 5-10 meters away from this house), and can comfortably browse using it, however my mbp cant. It can see the connection but when i connect to it, its got no bar strength. So whats the deal? Is there something i can do to fix this, or do mbps just come with really weak network cards or whatever ?

A couple things you can try.
    1. Google "how to boost wifi" and check youtube as well as Wiki-how-to.
It amazed me to find FREE and SIMPLE home made ways to boost your routers signal (and it works).
Also, you may need to just move the position of your router/its antennas.
Also, other wireless devices (and microwave ovens ...... Basically anything electronic with emissions) near or between your router and palm/laptop/phone (whatever) can greatly affect signal strength (as well as give you a mental jolt of reality about how many wireless and other emissions we live with every day)
Finally (actually there are tons more suggestions from a simple Google search ......
freeantennas.com has a "template" which you can print out, trace on stiff paper and make a virtually free antenna booster (plus a little glue and tinfoil)
For the very lazy (I found out) a curved piece of cardboard (covered in tin foil even better) behind your router's antenna directing the signal in the direction of you device can DOUBLE the signal strength (I was amazed as a klutzy non-techie with lazy tendencies)

  • IMac no longer sees network or gets very weak connection

    Here's the deal:
I have an iMac that was purchased in 2010. I have used it in an office connecting through a network router using the iMac's airport capabilities. The connection had been good for over a year. Airport would show four full bars every day, day in and day out.  Connection speed was high, and everything was rosy.
About two weeks ago, I noticed my download speed was decreasing. The airport status would show only three or two bars.  Sometimes it would disconnect and say that the network was not available. Then, I could reconnect, but I would only have two bars. Even then, it wouldn't stay connected long. The situation then deteriorated rapidly. Now, I can only see the network half of the time, and when I do, it shows as only one bar.
First, let me say nothing changed. Nothing on the computer changed, nothing on the router changed. It just came out of no where.
Here's what I did in troubleshooting:
Reset the router and made it an unsecure network to make sure it was not a security problem (which I didn't really think it was to begin with because the problem was not seeing the router, not an inability to get on the network).
I sat the iMac right next to the router. Then, it connected fine at full strength. But if I move it from the router too far (but still within the operating range it had for over a year), it drops dramatically.
Reinstalled the operating system on the Mac.  None of these things worked.
Here is the real kicker. There are three other Macs that operate in this office, and all show full strength and connection to the network. I can set my MacBook right in front of the iMac and connect full strength.
We also put a router in the same room with the iMac.  Even when it is sitting just 6 feet or so from the iMac, it only shows as 2 bars of strength.
So what is the deal? I cannot set this iMac right next to the router. It used to work just fine where it sits, now it can hardly see anything via airport while all other computers can just fine.

    HI,
Go to /Library/Preferences. Move all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash, restart the iMac.
That doesn't alter your settings, just resets Airport.

  • Weak connection/Freezing with the new Plantronics Discovery 975

After talking to other Plantronic Disc. 975 users with Palm Pres, I would like to reach out further! The head set for $130.00 has static and popping with the head set and phone within arms reach. Also, when hanging up on a call with the ear piece, the Pre goes black! The slider does not turn the phone off or on again! You have to tap the on off button to get to Pre to respond!. Any body else beside me and my friends with this problem? Thanks!!

  • Weak connection speed on Mac vs. PC

    Hi.
My MBP 17" which is a year old has since day one been having problems with download/upload speeds compared to my old PC.
When I put them both up for a test on my 30/30 mbit connection I get the following results:
    Wired
    PC: 3,9 MB/s download - 3,5 MB/s upload.
    MAC: 2,4 MB/S download - 2,3 MB/s upload.
    Wireless
    PC: 3,1 MB/s download - 3,0 MB/s upload.
    MAC: 2,2 MB/s download - 1,9 MB/s upload.
As you can see the Mac is always about 1-1,5 MB/s slower than the PC regardless of connection method. Please notice they are both standing in the same room, next to eachother with nothing to disturb the wireless signal. I've also tried changing their position.
Please help me gain my full connection speed with my Mac, be it wired or wireless, there must be some settings or things to tinker with.
Note that I am running with a fully upgraded Lion, this didn't change my speeds.
Below are some specifications for my Wi-Fi and router: (also note that I am not able to change the router as it delivers my optical TV through the internet (which doesn't work with any other routers, I've tried)
    Wi-Fi
    PHY Mode:          802.11g
    BSSID:          00:21:29:08:cb:be
    Channel:          1
    Country Code:          FR
    Network Type:          Infrastructure
    Security:          WPA2 Personal
    Signal / Noise:          -50 dBm / -91 dBm
    Transmit Rate:          54
It's a Linksys WRP-400 router. With default settings (only added a WPA2-key and changed the SSID)

If you want my honest opinion based on my real life experience, almost all Linksys routers out there are anti-macs... I've had 4 and all have been crap, as soon as I changed the router to a USRobotics, 3COM, 2Wire, Airport Extreme, Vizio, NetGear, etc. it all worked fine...

  • Satelite U400-177 - weak connection using Intel Wifi Link 5100

    Hello,
Recently I have problems with my wifi connection.
I don't know why but now the connection is erratic when in past recent my connection was 30Mbps now is 1 or 10 or 20 I'm talking about 1 feet near the router.
I have the latest driver 14.2.0.10 and cant find a solution.
I'm thinking in change the card with a new one like the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230.
Do you know that is compatible?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
As far as I know there are no informations regarding the compatibility between this Wlan card and the notebook.
So you would need to test this yourself
But if the BIOS would recognize this Wlan properly, then there should not be a issue in order to use this
According the Wlan card specifications, this card allows connectivity at 2.4 GHz to access older 802.11b/g networks and 5 GHz for higher speeds and greater network capacity.
However, Im owner of the U400 notebook and my Wlan works properly.
But Ive disabled all the power saving features for Wlan which allows using the card with best performance. You can disable this in win 7 power management.

  • Weak Connection to the Internet with My Time Warner Router

Strangely enough, I cannot connect my palm Pixie to the internet via our Time Warnar Turbo Router when I am not in the same room as my router; whereas my sister's iphone 4 gets connected in any room in our house. Has it something to do with Palm or the Window's platform. I should mention that I have similar problems with my Toshiba laptop running on Windows 7.

  • WRT54G weak connection

I have the latest firmware updates and my WRT54G is V9 (i think). The router is 2 rooms over from me, and i am connecting to it with a desktop computer using a linksys compact wireless G usb adapter (channel 1). The signal is usually between 20% and 25% or not "there" at all.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how i can make the signal better?
Message Edited by Riversong on 11-18-2007 03:47 PM

There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If you still have trouble, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport Snow weak connection with ibook-none with PC

I have an airport snow in another building and a laptop and pc in the house. The ibook sometimes gets a great connection and at other times none. Most often we get a three bar connection, but only in certain rooms of the house. I also have a pc that often gets no connection in the house, but a great connection when right next to the airport. Strangly we can connect easier to a neighbor's linxys. Could an airport get old and lose ability? Is there something I can do to guarantee stronger connection to our airport on both these computers?

Run the AirPort Admin Utility and change the channel of the base station. Your symptoms are classic for an interference problem.

  • Weak Connection.. WRT54GS v7

I bought this linksys from dell a little less the two years ago.. it got packed away in a move. Found it (unopened) in June and decided to use it. We have one laptop wireless sits next to router and one desktop cabled about 12 foot away, the signal to both the wireless and cabled computers comes and goes with our cable internet. I can play online games and view short news videos but if I try to watch movies using my netflix instant watch.. it seldom connects without an error telling me my connection is to slow and viewing will take and hour, same error on all computers. I downloaded the firmware, but could not get it installed, then read on the forum that the gs is having problems with recent updated firmware, so I stopped trying to install. How do I figure out why the connection is so slow and speed it up? My Dell desktop is an e521 with windows xp 2.4 with 2gig. My laptop is a Inspiron win xp 1520 2.4 and 2gig. We also have another laptop Inspiron 1525 purchased same month we hooked up the modem, same exact problem. All have recent updates.
    Thank you,
    Lee

Try updating the firmware with a tftp utily from ftp://ftp.linksys.com and reconfigure the router after resetting it to factory defaults. It will work for you.

  • HT1212 Weak wifi connection with my iphone 5?  Causes?  Cure?

Since I've gotten a new iphone 5 it has very weak connection to our home wifi signal.  We are using WEP encryption (trying to avoid other's problems with WPA)  I bought the iphone 5 from Verizon.  Will exchanging the iphone 5 help or is this a endemic problem with the iphone 5. I have an iphone 4 and iphone 4S and they have a strong connection when held in the same spot ast the iphone 5.

    What other's problems with WPA?
WEP is not very secure - very easy to crack. If you have a Windows PC connected to your network, I would consider changing the encryption to WPA right away.
The same problem with every other wi-fi network your iPhone 5 has access to?
You do know the iPhone 5 includes an "n" compatible wireless card that the iPhone 4 and 4S does not include?
Have you checked the manufacturer's website for your wireless router for a firmware update for your wireless router model that has not been installed?
Have you tried resetting your wireless router and modem?
