Web editing: app rec & issue with textedit

I am a TA and so I need to maintain a simple website for a course. All I really need to do at the moment is basic formatting and things like uploading and linking to pdfs. However, I'm having some problems.
1. I've been using Textedit. Here's what I do:
a) open a new textedit file
b) copy and paste source code from the current website into the text file
c) choose "make plain text"
d) edit
e) save two copies as .txt files, say webtext.txt and index.txt
f) using the finder, change the index.txt to index.html
g) upload index.html to the ftp server using the finder's "connect to server" option.
The problem is that when I go back and open webtext.txt, the one that I explicitly saved as plain text, it doesn't display the text anymore, it only displays it the way it would display on the web. So next time I want to edit, I have to go recover the source code from the web. This is very annoying, and what if the webpage were ever lost? Also using textedit is tedious since I have to do every little thing by hand.
So, my first question is, any advice on fixing my workflow with Textedit?
And my second question
2. Can anyone recommend some basic web building software that is simple and intuitive for use on the mac? Preferably free or very cheap. I basically just want it to make it easier for me to format the page and upload links in a folder-tree-structure. I also want to be able to preview what I'm going to get without having to actually upload it to the web.

That is because you failed to check the box in TextEdit preferences called "ignore rich text commands in html."
Ooh, that sounds like it will solve it. I'll try it when I get home later (on a PC right now).
Also set the preferences to Plain Text to start with to avoid wasting time changing it to plain text for every file.
Well, if I didn't have to keep re-creating this file, I wouldn't have to do it each time, so I think this will also be solved by the above.
Also just name your files with .html extension instead of .txt when you save them.
Its been a little while, but I vaguely remember that this didn't work for some reason? I'll have to try it again.
You never have to upload something to the web to preview it. You just give it an .html name on your machine and then use File > Open File on your web browser.
Ok, fair enough. I'd still like to find a program that would help me make the page look a little prettier formatting-wise. Right now all I know how to do is basic text and links.

Can no longer edit app descriptor file with 3.4 - really?

Until now, when publishing to AIR from Flash Professional, I could manually edit the app descriptor XML with a little workaround:
1. Set up my publish settings in Flash Professional and click OK
2. Then edit the XML file and save it
3. Then Publish from Flash Professional WITHOUT opening the Publish Settings again (which would recreate the XML file).
This has been CRUCIAL to me in order to add certain elements to the XML file such as <extensions> I want to include with my project.
However, this seems impossible to do with the 3.4 AIR SDK release version. When I try, it ignores my manual edits of the XML file and simply removes them when I publish. This is a HUGE problem because now I can no longer add <extensions> in the app descriptor file (and this can't be done from the Flash Professional GUI).
Anyone have ANY idea how to keep adding my extensions to the app descriptor file?

I have the same problem, but not the same solution : I have an old air application under Air 2.0, with an automatic updater, and wanted to make an intermediate application as seen here : http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/update-air-2-or-earlier.html .
So I have to change the application descriptor by hand. But Flash CS6 always overwrite this descriptor with its own datas while exporting.
How can I change my application descriptor for this intermediate version ? I have Flash CS5, but not Flash CS5.5, and the extension for Flash CS5 doesn't exist anymore !

Web Template Nav Block issue with a characteristic

Hi folks,
We have an issue with one of our web templates. In one of the navigation blocks there are some characteristics, for example, some are like as below.
G/L Account
Asset
Cost Center
Order
Network
WBS Element
Cost Center (Accoung string -correct object)
Sales document
The second object from bottom supposed to show as 'Account String' since the char is accounting string itself, insted, it is showing as Cost Center which is not correct.
The web template has 'personalization' checked. It is based on a BEx query.
This issue is happening with one user id. For other users (using their logon credentials), it is showing correctly.

The parameter ID column is blank for this user.
However, the same query displays same for other users.
By the way, we are on BW 3.5 now.

3rd party app Installation issues with Leopard

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro with Leopard installed. I have been trying to install (from original media) a number of applications (such as Office:mac 2004) that install and run well on my old G4 running Tiger. On Leopard the installer won't even open the package. I have checked permissions, am in an admin account, etc but nothing seems out of place. I also recognize that these installation packages are pre-Leopard but I can't imagine all my software is now obsolete. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes I have checked selected applications that I am having issues with. Office:mac 2004 is being used by others on Leopard and Intel based platforms. Not sure if 100% of these users migrated the installation from a prior machine or were upgrading the OS so already had it installed but that is highly unlikely. A demo copy of this even came with my machine. Per advice from other discussion groups this was completely removed prior to trying to install my bought copy of the software. I had believed that Rosetta would allow most (all) apps that ran on a PowerPC under Tiger to work. Since I can't get the installer to even run, I can't tell if the app itself will work.
BTW, I am about to go back and reinstall Leopard to see if that solves the problem.

Has anyone had app update issues with iOS 8.1?

I'm running iOS 8.1 on a iPhone 6+. If I try to update an app from the app store without being logged in, it will hang the process and the update will fail.
Previously, with my iPhone 4 and iOS 7.1.2 the app store would ask me to log in when an app update was attempted without being logged in.
The work around until apple fixes this bug is to ensure you are logged in BEFORE attempting an app update. An honest techie at the local apple store admitted this is a bug (one of many) in iOS 8.1. Has anyone else had this issue with iOS 8.1

Nope, I'm able to update an app in iOS 8.1, even if I'm not first logged into the iTunes & App Store in Settings. It prompts me to update the app, then I sign in with my password.
Do you have Touch ID enabled for App Store or not?

Install MS SQL Server Web Edition on a server with MS SQL Server Express

Hi,
We have a VPS cloud server on which there is an instance of SQL Server Express.
Since we need more resources, I consulted with the hosting provider and they offered us to use SQL Server Web Edition (SPLA Lisence).
My question is - the hosting company claims that it is not possible to keep the SQL Server Express instance along side with the SQL Server Web Edition, and that we must do ugrade and remove the SQL Server Express instance.
This will cause us a long downtime, since there are multiple DBs on the SQL Server Express that we will have to backup, and then restore them one by one on the Web Edition after it is installed.
Is this correct? Can't we install the SQL Server Web Edition Instance and gradually move the DBs to it?

The 50 instances per machine is a setup check rule as opposed to a hardware limitation. From this perspective, there would be no difference between a VM or a physical server.
In the line from the documentation that you referenced, the "stand-alone server" refers not to VM vs. Physical, but instead a stand-alone instance vs. a clustered instance. That is, in a non-clustered environment, you can have up to 50 instances.
In the past when I helped with setup testing and automation, we'd run VMs with 20-ish instances, including instances from 2012, 2008 R2, 2008, and 2005, including multiple editions (Enterprise, Standard, Express, Web, etc.).
One other potential option if your provider cannot support multiple instances is to do an in-place upgrade (edition upgrade) of your existing Express instance. This would retain the current instance and upgrade the existing instance from Express
to Web without the need to migrate databases. Here is more info on the supported version and edition upgrade paths (including Express to Web):

Cannot use min-max-close buttons in top of screen after loading new web page, also has issues with videos. Does work fine oddly after shrinking the window and re-opening it from the taskbar...

Issues with firefox where it wouldn't respond to above mentioned tasks, its like its clicking through the browser sometimes to screens behind it, or with drop down menus, it opens the menu up, but you click an option and it'll click on whatever the drop down menu is cover up. My computer has been running rather ragged lately which makes me think its a virus, I do have anti-virus and have tried a couple of programs to clean whatever it is up. I've also tried reinstalling firefox and that doesn't seem to help either.

In Firefox 4 and later Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.

Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

Lightroom 5 & lightroom iphone app import issues with iOS8

hi guys,
recently i am having problems with importing iphone pics thru the lightroom app. for reasons i dont understand the images comes to lr in small resolution (640x852). if i work on the pic in the app- and save it to the camera roll the images in the app its full resolution. ideas?

You did not mention if it always were the same images that were not being synced in your original post.
Hence the question.
Even though it might seem silly for you - those questions being answered can make us understand where the problem lies.
The problem can be that you have an app that shoots pictures that are causing the issue, etc.
Best way to help us and yourself would be:
letting us know if it always only happens to a specific set of images
if only specific set of images causes this - where did they come from, had they been edited somewhere else or where they untouched when you imported them to Lr mobile
be very specific in your posts, things like "if i work on the pic in the app- and save it to the camera roll the images in the app its full resolution. " Doesn't really help us to understand where you are seeing the full resolution image, leaving us to assumptions that can be wrong.
If your workaround is to edit the images that's good but it still doesn't solve your problem right?
What you can do is - next time you have this issue - go to the settings in Lr mobile (Lr icon inside the app) and once the settings are open, press the Lr icon again for a couple of seconds to get a diagnostics log.
Then send it to me privately, do not post here directly, and we can see if it lets us know whats going on.

How to troubleshoot Windows 8 Mail app connectivity issues with Google Business Apps?

My company went to Google Apps last year. I am unable to connect Mail App on Windows 8 to my corporate Google account. I am using m.google.com for server with SSL enabled, but no luck. I also enabled bit locker as my company policy requires device encryption.
Mail App does not give a clear error message. It simple states that this PC does not meet security policies enforced by Google. Please advice. I already made peace when my Nokia Lumia 920 running windows phone 8 does not connect to Google
apps because of a bug that would not turn on device encryption unless requested by Active Sync and it would not turn on with Google sync.

Today's enterprise requires that most devices support device encryption and Windows Phone does support device encryption but here is the problem- there is no support for SD card encryption. Even for phones like Lumia 920 that does not have an SD card cannot

10.1.3.3 JDev web service client proxy: Issue with XSD:anySimpleType

One of our Web services XSD elementss has "anySimpleType" as the type:

The client proxy is generated using JDev 10.1.3.3. We observed that the corresponding Java object is created with "String" data type:
protected java.lang.String value;
exp.setValue("100");
We need to be able to pass arguments with other simple types as well (E.g. Decimal). We tried changing the auto generated code, but weren't successful.
Any pointers in this regard are much appreciated.

Web Gallery / Mobile Me - issues with IE 6?

Hi,
I have uploaded my latest set of photos on the web gallery. But when I want to see the web gallery with IE6, it says - "We recommend a newer browser" and it lists the three browsers - IE7, FF 1.5 or higher and safari 3.0 or higher. There is a button that says Use current browser and a checkbox that says "do not warn me again". Even if I click the checkbox, the browser does not load the gallery page.
Do we really need IE7 now to view gallery? I do have FF and that seems to work fine, but my folks are still very IE savvy.
Is this a bug or is this expected? At least the browser should continue loading the page, even after you check the "Don't warn me again" checkbox and click on the "Use current browser" button.
Anyone else seeing this issue?

Mac Locked through the Find my iPhone app having issues with unlock

I was testing out the Find my iPhone app and locked my 2013 MacBook Air running OSX Yosemite thinking that it would just lock the computer and show a pretty message or something. Unfortunately that's not quite what happened.
When I turn on the MacBook and hold down the option key it asks for the 4-digit pin I made when I locked it. (I know what the pin is). If I don't hold down the option key then it just skips to the message in the 3rd image.
Once the pin is entered it asks to select which partition to boot up. I select Macintosh HD. (My Windows 7 partition seems to be working fine.)
Then the Apple logo appears with a gray background (something I would expect from Mavericks) and this message pops up momentarily before the MacBook shuts down. It doesn't show up long enough for me to select any of the options.
Has as anyone else had this problem and is there a solution available?

the lock screen you are seeing is not the Find my phone remote lock screen but the firmware password screen. Preventing unauthorised access to Start up options. Restart normally and see what happens.
If you get the same message, boot with the options key again and choose Recovery 10.9. Once booted open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions and Disk.
Restart.
Failing this you could be looking at booting again and reinstalling OS X either from a Time Machine backup or a fresh install.

Photo app syncing issues with latest updates

Since installing the new OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 to iMac and ISO 8.3 to iPhone 5s and iPad3, not all of my photo albums and or photos in various albums are syncing..... any hints?? I also installed the latest iTunes 12.1.2.27 too ! I have rebooted all devices too....

Maybe try it this way this is what I did with mine because I did not migrate and didn't know about that either.

On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
For Duplicates if you have a big pile in a row and I mean not like every other picture of the same pictures on the keyboard Hold down the shift button. or the other way is to Hold down the Command buttom that is right by the space bar then on the trackpad or mouse click once on the picture you want to delete and do a bunch at a time then on the last picture of that pile either right click the picture and delete or go up to the edit button which is next to file on the top left and click delete in edit.
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings.

Text edit app not working after Secupdate 007

Pismo running 10.3.9 showing issues with textedit application which worked fine prior to update.
When attempting to open an existing .txt file the beach ball spins for awhile and then does nothing. Finder window stays in front. When running through the dock, it shows textedit open, but textedit will not appear in menu bar.
I thought it might just be prior documents. After force quitting, I can open text edit app on its own with a new page showing. I can type in it, but when I attempt to save, the same issue shows. It just hangs.
Ran applejack and
I trashed textedit.plist thinking corrupted, but to no avail.
Any ideas on how to get this going?

If you have cleaned all the possible cache files with AppleJack (plus run the other functions), one possible fix for problems that develop after a Security Update or OSX version update is to download/install the Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update on top of your installed 10.3.9.

If you don't have another User account, create one named 'Test' if you wish, then log into the 'Test' account. If TextEdit works normally, then you know your problem lies in your Home account. A quick and dirty test for solving some problems in your Home account is to go to your Home account <yourusername>/Library and drag the Preferences folder to the desktop, then log out/in to your Home account and see if the problem is resolved. If corrected, the problem lies in the Preferences folder on the desktop. Most prefs will be re-created as you use the computer, but save the old Preferences folder in the event there is one or more pref that you want to stick back in the new Prefs folder.
