Web service VS Direct DB access

Hi,
I am completely new to data warehouse.
Recently, i need to build a data warehouse that get data from one of the transaction databases for data analysis.
I am struggling whether i should get the required data by web service or directly access the database. Could anyone advise please? Thanks.
Regards,
Shirley

Hi Hua Min,
Thanks for your reply.
I am sorry that i haven't make my question clear. Let me describe more detail here.
In my data warehouse project, data is extracted from a system (e.g. SystemA) that containing all the transactions information to the database of my data warehouse for further data analysis.  I am thinking of two ways to access the required data from
SystemA. 1) SystemA provides some web services for required data retrieval or 2) Create a read-only database access role in the database of SystemA for my ETL tool to connect to SystemA's DB directly to grab the required data. Both ways should work but I am
not sure which way is a better way. Thanks.

Shirley

  • Web services call directly from SAP ?

    Hi ESA Experts,
    Is it possible to make a web service call directly from a SRM or SAP R3 system without using SAP XI ?. If so, have you some code samples ?
    Thanks a lot for your response.
    Best regards

    Hi, Etienne.
      There are two things to do.
      1. Prepare Service Provider
      For providing services, there are many tools to publish as web services
    from BAPI, RFC and Enterprise Services.
      Please look at here.
      help.sap.com - Web Service Toolset
      http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/db/99c04ba22fe64f96a8651df68eab92/frameset.htm
      i recommend Web Service Creation Wizard as first step.
      2. Prepare Service Consumer
      Also has many tools. What i like is WS Navigator for basic test of web services.

  • System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException When Accessing Reporting Services

    Hi. I have inherited a client's mission critical database + SSRS project that I am attempting to migrate from 32-bit SQL Server Express 2005 + SSRS on a Windows Server 2003 to 64-bit SQL Server Express 2008 R2 + SSRS on a Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
    While I am not skilled in SQL Server I am having to learn quickly(!) and have managed to migrate the database and web application (with little change, apart from the web.config) and it is working fine. I have also migrated the SSRS database and can open
    the Report Manager and generate reports OK.
    However, the database's web application fails with a "Server Error in '/' Application" when it is used to generate a PDF report, with this exception:
    System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server did not recognize the value of HTTP Header SOAPAction: http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2003/12/reporting/reportingservices/Render
    (full text of error message given below).
    My research has thrown up a few references to this, with the suggestion of changing the SSRS endpoint used by the code from ReportService.asmx to ReportService2010.asmx. This does not help, though, and neither does using the ReportService2005.asmx or ReportExecution2005.asmx
    endpoints.
    If I open the endpoint directly in a web browser using http://<ip address>:<port>/ReportServer/ReportService2010.asmx then it displays a sensible-looking XML document tree (but no associated style info).
    I'm not really sure about where to go from here. Can anyone help?

  • SQL 2012 R2 - SSRS with the Report Server Web Service URL, can't access

    Hello:
    I am installing Dynamics CRM 2013.  When I am on RS Configuration manager; I am running into the SSRS (SQL 2012 on Server 2012)SQL issue, can't access the
    http://servername/:80/ReportsServer or
    http://servername/:Reports web pages
    The database server has SSRS native mode installed, it is using a domain account for the service credentials.  This account also has permission to log on a service in the GPO
    Account is a domain admin and is a local administrator
    SQL server is 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012.  User base is less than 60 people and they have SharePoint 13 on the same SQL server.  Server more than enough resources.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks..Dan

    Hi DCas1,
    According to your description, you could not access
    http://servername/:80/ReportsServer or http://servername/:Reports web pages from Reporting Services configuration manager, SSRS in configured in native mode and the account you used is a local administrator.
    In Reporting Services, URLs are used to access the Report Server Web service and Report Manager. Before we can use either application, we need to configure at least one URL each for the Web service and Report Manager. If we are using the Reporting Services
    Configuration tool to create or modify the URLs, we can accept the default values for a URL or specify custom values. When we create a report server URL, we must specify the following parts: Host name, port and Virtual directory. In order to improve the efficiency
    of troubleshooting, I need to ask several questions:
    Since the default URL is http://<computername>/reportserver, did you type the URLs manually? or the URLs configured in Reporting Services configuration manager are
    http://servername/:80/ReportServer and
    http://servername/:Reports?
    Could you provide detailed information of error log(default location: %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles)?
    For more information about Configuring a URL, please refer to the following documents:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb630447(v=sql.110).aspx
    If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Can anyone share - Web Service / WSDL for either Access or SQL Server

    I am a newby and have never written a web service so I hoing someone will share a WSDL that is working for them!
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    I think it fails on decoding the Web Service response. I
    would try to set resultFormat to e4x. In this case, no decoding
    takes place and you can get whole soap body in event.result.

  • Unable to connect to web services. Confirm internet access and try again HP 7520

    Every Friday for the last 6 months I have scanned my time sheets from my HP7520 to my email and the forwarded to the  office. All of a sudden Last Friday I get the message above in the subject line. ALL other features work just fine!!!!!!! I can print, I can scan (just not to email) I can print (wirelessly) from my phone or even my laptop. But the only thing that does not work is the scan to email function, UGHHHHHHHH I read tons of forum user have gotten help with this issue from Garytech1. Please help!!!!!! I have to resort to using my S3 phone to scan and email and the quality is sub par for payroll needs. Thanks so much!

    Hi amenhilady,
    Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I understand the scan to email feature of your Photosmart 7520 printer is not functioning.
    If you are still experiencing the same issue, please try the following steps.
    Please turn off your printer.
    Please turn off your router.  If your router doesn’t have an on/off switch, please unplug the power cord from the router.
    After waiting a full 60 seconds please turn on your router (or plug it back in).
    After the router has completed its startup routine please turn on your printer.
    After the printer has completed its startup routine, please test the scan to email feature.  If it works there no need to continue with any further trouble shooting steps.
    Please set a manual IP address and manual DNS servers for the printer. I have included a link to another post with the steps, including screen shots on how to do this.   Don’t worry that the screen shots show a Photosmart 7510 printer, the steps are the same.
    Please test the scan to email feature.  If it works there is no need to continue with any further trouble shooting steps.

  • How to comsume another application´s web service directly from crm on deman

    Hi,
    I am incharge of a integration project between EBS 11.5.10.2 and CRM On Demand via web services
    1. Assumptions:
    Not to use additional architecture (Ex. Fusion Middleware)
    2. One of the requirements is: From CRM On Demand to invoke a EBS web service to see and update item´s stock.
    3. Advances
    We already developed EBS web services to see and update Item´s Stocks
    We need to consume the EBS Web service developed directly from CRM on Demand, but we haven´t found a way.
    In CRM On Demand Panel Administration there is a section for web service integration but just for exposing CRM On Demand objects and functionalities, but not for consuming another application´s web service.
    Mean while we are developing a web service client (web application) to consume EBS web service just for demonstrating its functionality to see and update EBS item stock.
    I will appreciate your help!!!

  • Queries regarding creating Web Services in Oracle EBS 11i[Workaround found]

    Hi,
    We have an E-Business Suite 11i installation(11.5.10.2). In our implementation we are using some of the public APIs to insert & update data in EBS tables. Earlier this was done by calling the required PL/SQL procedures through dblinks.
    Now, we need to do the same by using Web Services. That is we need a Web Service which can be invoked from a different application(SAP) and the Web Service in turn will call the APIs.
    I am new to Web Services/SOA and as far as I could understand from reading the documentation, we need the following:
    1. Install Oracle 10g Application Server with BPEL Process Manager ONLY(Oracle AS Adapter will be installed as part of BPEL PM. The Oracle AS Adapter will connect 10gAS to EBS)
    2. JDeveloper to create and deploy the BPEL process.
    I have a few questions here:
    1. Are the above two points the only prerequisites for what I want to achieve? Do I need to install anything else?
    2. How do I expose the created Web Service? I mean how will the 3rd party application invoke this Web Service?
    Answers and/or links to helpful documents awaited.
    Regards,
    -Sujoy
    Found an alternate and more cost-effective solution. Turns out that the SAP PI/XI engine can use JDBC to connect to the Oracle DB. SAP PI/XI will host the Web Service and will internally access the API through a JDBC connection.

    Hi Helios,
    I had checked the note that you are referring to before posting here. It did provide me with a start but otherwise it wasn't a great help (also some of the links are broken) . Since I am quite new to this...I am not sure whether I am proceeding in the right direction. An example/tutorial is what would be pretty useful.
    Thanks anyway!

  • Web service security with mutiple certificates

    Is it possible to secure a web service on OC4J such that multiple clients can securely access the same web service. I have been trying to send messages to the same web service end point using multiple signature keys. The problem that I am getting is that if I do not use the signature key specified within OC4J to sign the message I am receiving the following error "javax.xml.rpc.soap.SOAPFaultException: Chain does not terminate with a trusted CA". Note all the certificates are present in the configure OC4J keystore.
    Can anyone point me in the direction of some documentation on how to configure a web service to be securely accessed by multiple clients (certificates)
    Cheers
    Neil

    Here is an example where we have two keystores, Bob and Alice.
    Bob's Keystore:
    Entry Alias: alice (Trusted Certificate) >>> No password
    Entry Alias: bob (Key Pair + CA Certs) >>> password welcome1
    Alice's Keystore:
    Entry Alias: bob (Trusted Certificate) >>> No password
    Entry Alias: Alice (Key Pair + CA Certs) >>> password welcome1
    In our scheme each party on the end of the message exchange have two key-pairs one for signature and one of encryption:
    In the Oracle Web Service.xml you should see something to the effect:
    <key-store name="mykeystore" store-pass="welcome1"
    path="META-INF/bob.jks"/>
    <signature-key key-pass="welcome1" alias="bob"/>
    <encryption-key key-pass="welcome1" alias="bob"/>
    Later in this XML, you would see the encrypt element, here we let it know to use alice for XML Encryption:
    <encrypt>
    <recipient-key alias="alice"/>
    <encryption-method>AES-128</encryption-method>
    <tbe-elements>
    <tbe-element local-part="Body"
    name-space="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/"/>
    </tbe-elements>
    </encrypt>
    The default behavior is to only work with one client. If you need to work with multiple, then we have a means here:

    If you want to take existing WLS6.1 web services and convert them to WLS7.0 you can

    Web AS 6.40 you can create a Web Service Proxy directly in Transaction SE80. Create a new package and right click on it. Choose Create -> Enterprise service / Web service -> Proxy object. Now you can choose how you want to provide the WSDL Source.
