Web.xml - A guide?

I have been working with the web.xml file in Tomcat 4.1 to set up security for applications. However, does anyone know of a guide or some docs that list or layout the XML tags that can be used? I have just been gathering snippets from posts on the forums and OReilly articles I have found, but it would be really useful if there was a doc out there that was a definitive guide, so to speak.
Also, is it possible to do security on the file level? I have been able to get it to work on a context or application level, but not for any sub-directories or individual files. Thanks in advance.

  • How to configure ADF application to use OAM Identity Assertion ? web.xml

    We have a web application developed using ADF (application development framework) and deployed on WebCenter 11.1.1.2 (weblogic 10.3.2)
    OID Authentication and OAM identity assertion is configured in WebLogic 10.3.2 .
    How to configure security in ADF application (web.xml or weblogic.xml) so that it uses OAM identity assertion (already configured as authentication providers in weblogic server)
    Any pointers or documentation so that application (developed using ADF) check for identity tocken and verifies it with one of identity assertion providers.

    John,
    I have to concur. With OAM you don't need this. OAM intercepts the calls and inserts a cookie for WLS to get user information from.
    I strongly advise to go through the above mention OFM Security Guide. Esp. Chapter 10 tells you in every detail how to implement OAM SSO with WLS (with or without OHS as a proxy).
    Reading this chapter saves you time and turnarounds on this topic...

  • Success_URL in web.xml not working - Need help

    Hi:
    I developed my whole application in Jdeveloper 10.1.3.2 and all the security are done through custom module. Everything is working fine except one of the part that is success_url in web.xml.
    1. There are total 10 pages in my application independent of each other.
    2. I configured the custom login procedure and it is working fine.
    3. From Jdeveloper if I run any page (i.e. one of 10 pages) it is prompting me to login and after login it is redirecting to the page I ran.
    My issue is that after the login is completed as in step 3, I want the page to be redirected to predefined page called UserResp.jspx. I don't want to redirect to the page from where the login page was called. As per the notes in the ADF document, I configured the success_url in the adfAuthentication servlet as below. But after login it is not redirecting to the success_url but it is redirecting to the page from where the login was prompted.
    Do I need to perform any other step for this success_url to work. Could you please guide.
    Below is the details of my web.xml.

    Hi All:
    Thanks for all your help regarding the adfAuthentication success_url. Now I am able to configure to make this work. But now I am facing another issue i.e. I am getting 401 Not authorized message when the success_url is pointed to the jspx page.
    Note: I am using custom login module similar to DBProcOraDataSourceLoginModule so my roles are stored in the custom Role class. So I am not sure how to pass this role info to the security in ADF in order to authorize the page to be viewed.
    Could you please help and can you point me to any specific link.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Registered servlets in web.xml do not work....WHY????

    Hi i am executing a web application on tomcat 4.1.29 and have the following structure...the jsp pages are executed but when sendinga request to a servlet the servlets are not executed...Can somebody guide me out of this....
    webapps
    {MyApp}->[web-inf][jsp]
    {web-inf}->[classes][lib]
    {classes}->[com][src]
    {src}->[source files]
    when the source files are compiled package structure is followed and the class files are grneated in
    com.MyApp.servlets
    ...etc
    the servlets are registered in the web.xml file as shown below.....few lines of my web.xml file
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>userServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>com.MyApp.servlets.UserServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    even then when accessing a servlet it says the resource not found
    The requested resource (/MyApp/servlet/UserServlet) is not available.
    am i missing something some where...why are the servlets not executed????

        <servlet>
            <servlet-name>UserServlet</servlet-name>
            <servlet-class>com.MyApp.servlets.UserServlet</servlet-class>
            <load-on-startup>2</load-on-startup>
        </servlet>
        <servlet-mapping>
            <servlet-name>UserServlet</servlet-name>
            <url-pattern>/User</url-pattern>
        </servlet-mapping>I'd invoke it with this URL:
    http://localhost:8080/MyApp/UserServlet
    hmm something seems to be wrong here ;-)
    URL should be
    http://localhost:8080/MyApp/User (see <url-pattern>)

  • Jazn-data.xml file, authentication in web.xml and embedded oc4j

    I've defined new security-roles, security-constraints and an authentication method in my web.xml file and i've created a new jazn-data.xml file that holds the different users and their groups.
    If I want to link the security-roles of the web.xml file to the roles in the jazn-data.xml file I always need an orion-application.xml file, is this correct?
    If I want to deploy an application as this to the embedded container the security won't work, I'm always getting the '403 forbidden' page.
    Can somebody point me out how I need to define security for an embedded and standalone environment when using authentication and jazn-data.xml file + how do I deploy this to a standalone oc4j and how to get this same application to work in the embedded oc4J.

    hi "romanna"
    Part of the answer to "Can somebody point me out how I need to define security ..." can probably be found in the "Oracle ADF Developer's Guide" that has "18 Adding Security to an Application".

  • JSF - How to set up tag libs in web.xml file?

    Hello all,
    I have a doubt... that in an JSF application we are using two tag libraries, one for the core and other for html components. Both these *.tld files are jared inside "jsf-impl.jar" file.
    The problem is that when i start the web server (Tomcat4.0.6) the console shows that taglib tag must be configured... this means that we have to specify the "<taglib></taglib>" elements in the web.xml file of the jsf application... but how do configure the jar file...
    please guide...

    Putting the JAR files in WEB-INF/lib and using the standard URIs in the taglib directives are all that's needed; the container locates the TLDs in the JAR files at startup.
    If this doesn't work, it's a bug in the container. You may want to upgrade to a later version of Tomcat; 4.0.6 is ancient, and may very well be buggy in this area.

  • ejb-name into web.xml automatically

    Hello all,
    I follow the OC4J's tutorial in >>Servlet Developer's Guide<< using Jdeveloper 903.
    there is an EJB session bean named HelloBean.
    From UML Diagram, I can get it, and write the HelloServlet.java to invoke session bean.
    now it is Ok. Jdeveloper online help says that EJB reference <ejb-ref> can be written into web.xml file,
    but it doesn't do it. I manually insert <ejb-ref>...</ejb-ref> into web.xml.
    and change <ejb-name> and <ejb-ref-name> in ejb/HelloBean.
    I want to know how to do this automatically by Jdeveloper 903.
    and how to change session bean's <ejb-name> from HelloBean into ejb/HelloBean?
    Thanks.
    Wu JianHua.

    Automatic insertion of ejb-ref in web.xml whenever EJB dependencies are included in WAR deployment profile.
    Select Tools | Preferences
    Select Deployment in the left hand tree
    Select the check box for "Automatically Fill in <ejb-ref> elements in web.xml
    You can hit F1 hel on the above panel to view the help.
    From help system
    Automatically Fill In <ejb-ref> Elements in web.xmlBy default, JDeveloper automatically inserts corresponding elements to the web module deployment descriptor file, web.xml, whenever EJB dependencies are included in the WAR profile. If an EJB dependency is subsequently removed, however, JDeveloper will leave the elements in web.xml instead of removing them. Clear this checkbox to disable automatic insertion of elements in the web.xml file. Clearing this field prevents extraneous <ejb-ref> elements from appearing in the web.xml. However, do this with caution, since you'll have to make sure that the web.xml file is complete and accurate before deployment.

    These fields are used to specifies session information.
    A session can be either a distributed, fault-tolerant session, or a
    lightweight local-only session. this is specifies by 'impl' field, its Legal
    values:{'distributed' | 'lite'}
    If the impl is ?distributed?, then the session could be of two further types,
    and this specifies by 'dsync-type' field. Its Legal values: {'dsync-local'
    |'dysnc-distributed')
    and value of 'impl' is up to you If you want your application to be
    distributed then
    use 'distributed ' otherwise 'lite'.
    for more information you can see java programmer guide and iAS admin guide

    Its depend on your requirement and type of hardware.
    how fast your processor is?
    what type of application you are going to deploy?
    how many customer can simultaneously hit your program?
    and so on...
    so If you will send me your all requirements and configuration than only I can

  • WEB.XML gives me an error while deploying a Web Application in Weblogic 5.1

    I have a Web.xml which I copied the one from their documentation and edited for my servlet specific data. When I try to deploy it I am getting the following error.

  • Web application and web.xml

    i have a web application consisting of 1 servlet and 5 jsps.
    the start point would be index.jsp
    i use firmwide login page. after login, i want the browser to display index.jsp page.
    In web.xml, i have defined -
    <welcome-file-list>          <welcome-file>/jsp/index.jsp</welcome-file>     </welcome-file-list>       <servlet>        <servlet-name>UtilitiesServlet</servlet-name>        <servlet-class>com.gs.fw.sox404.utilities.UtilitiesServlet</servlet-class>             <init-param>             <param-name>util-log4j-init-file</param-name>             <param-value>/WEB-INF/classes/util_log4j.properties</param-value>          </init-param>        <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>    </servlet>     <servlet-mapping>        <servlet-name>UtilitiesServlet</servlet-name>        <url-pattern>/UtilitiesServlet</url-pattern>    </servlet-mapping>if i define it as just index.jsp in the welcome file list, after successful login, it displays the dir structure of the web app.
    if i define it as jsp/index.jsp, then in some of the pages, it tries to find the servlet inside jsp folder.
    What would be the best way to get around this?

    Well, yes, it's not able to find it because you've not understood the mechanism of how it works clearly. You have to put your welcome file under every directory you want it to be used from. Like I said, it's not a path, it's a filename. So if the container sees that your request URL is for a directory, it'll look for the welcome files from the welcome file list, one by one, in the order of declaration. Whichever one it finds first, it'll serve that. If it doesn't find any, then it'll either give a 404 or a directory listing depending on the server and it's settings.
    So your problem is that you've put your index.jsp in your JSP folder but expect it to be served for all URLs. That won't happen, you'll have to put one file named index.jsp into every directory. The reasoning is pretty simple, what if you want different behaviour for each folder?
    This should fix your problem :)

    how do you modify the web.xml to lock down the pages from a user role

    I'll make a stab at your question:
    The following is an example of where a URL is protected within a web.xml deployment descriptor. In this example, the URL /protectedA within the application is protected:
    <!-- security constraints -->
    <security-constraint>
    <web-resource-collection>
    <web-resource-name>protectedA</web-resource-name>
