Weblogic 5.1 behaves erroneously

Hi,
We have a Web application running on Weblogic 5.1 and service pack 9 with jdk1.3.
For one day I do not face any problems with any page. After 1 day ,If I try a
page 10 times , it shows up 8-9 times but gives an error 1-2 times. This is happening
with most of the pages.
When we had upgraded from sp8 to sp9 we started facing these problems immediately
and had changed the following
a)
$JAVA $JAVA_OPTIONS -ms64m -mx64m
to
$JAVA $JAVA_OPTIONS -ms128m -mx128m
b) Increased the PermSize which is a jdk 1.3 bug fix on solaris
c) Restarted the server
The problem disappeared but has come after one day again
Can anyone please help me of whats wrong & how it can be corrected.Please help.
Thanx in advance.
Deepak

    jsp is calling a servlet which in turn calles a session bean

    I don't know why but weblogic builder sometimes behaves weird. Anyway, my suggestion is to try out to edit your application.xml manually.

  • JMS - UserTransaction - Commit issue

    Introduction
    I am moving from WebSphere to Weblogic and have counterd an UserTransaction commit issue.
    The code have not been modified, however the logic in Weblogic and Websphere behaves different.
    The messagingsystem is Websphere MQ, in Weblogic I have QCF, destinations, host and port etc. in a .bindings file, and I have configured JMS server and JMS modules with corresponding jndi names.
    I have verified that this configuration is correct throug a custom develop testtool deployed in WL, message is sent successfully to MQ.
    The problem - description
    However in my application i'm using UserTransaction and this is not working as expected.
    I have two classes that communicate with MQ (AbcDAO.java and QueueBroker.java) AbcDAO.java creates a UserTransaction and communicates with Queuebroker throug a method called "SendToAutoS" this method retrives the corrilationId (for the message sendt to MQ) from Queuebroker.
    The SendMessage method creates qcf, queueconnection, queue etc and sends the message to MQ. When i debug this steps (line:queueSender.send(theMessage) I can verify in MQ that a message count is registerted in mq on the correct queue, but it's not shown (since its not commited). However when performing finalize in Queuebroker, which close both session and connection, the messagecount is gone in MQ, and when returing to AbcDAO.java to perform ut.commit(); there is not any message on Queue.
    For me it looks like the message is rolledback when session and connection closes.
    Actions tried
    If I change this line QueueBroker , transacted to false witch i understand sends message without the need to commit:
    boolean transacted = false;
    queueSession = queueConnection.createQueueSession(transacted, QueueSession.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);
    the message is sendt successfully to MQ. However now either commit or rollback on the UserTransaction is working with transacted=false.
    I need the commit and rollback to be done on the UserTransaction for my application.
    Anyone have an idea why this is not working?
    The files - content
    AbcDAO.java - that creates a usertransaction
    ut = ServiceLocator.getInstance().getUserTransaction();
    ut.begin();
    msgCorId = sendToAutoS(userVO, messageSend, transactionQeueSend, transactionQeueFactory);
    ut.commit();

    log.debug("..");
    return QueueBroker.getInstance().sendMessage(message, transactionQueue, transactionQueueFactory);
    } catch (BrokerException be) {
    log.error("BrokerException", be);
    QueueBroker.java - that sends the message to MQ

    try {
    // Get service locator

    I know you are trying to send a JMS message, but just because this is true the generic JMS forum is not automatically the place you should ask questions like this. Your real beef is with the container you are using (Weblogic), UserTransaction and persistent JMS messages in combination with the specific JMS provider you are using.
    You will have far more chance to get help with this problem if you ask it in the Weblogic forum which you can also find on this very website. If you make a new post, be sure to create a link to it here so people can follow it.

  • Entity cache

    hi all
    have a question regarding entity cache behaviour.
    how do I make sure there are NO More than N beans in the entity cache. If I set max-beans-in-free-pool, problem seems to be this: if I need to retrieve more than (N+1) rows from DB, weblogic retrieves ONLY N beans because it reaches the max-beans-in-free-pool and doesn't bring (N+1)th row from DB. That behaviour is not desirable, of course.
    so, how does one set the entity-cache params, to
    1. be able to retrieve as many rows from the DB as the query results in - regardless of the param max-beans-in-free-pool
    2. let weblogic grow the entity cache to as big a cache as required - but then shrink it back to "some specified" cache size after idle-timeout.
    what params in deployment descriptor do I need to set - and to what values?
    any help in understanding these issues would be appreciated.

    thanks for the reply.
    well, maybe weblogic is not behaving as documented..
    It is supposed to use idle-timeout to reduce the number of beans to "initial-free-beans". I set initial-free-beans to 100 but even after the timeout has passed, it keeps lot more than 100 beans in pool.
    can anyone think of a reason why it does that?

  • TimeZone.getDefault is wrong if the System TimeZone is set to Rangoon

    Hi,
    Once the System TimeZone is set to Rangoon i.e (+6:30), TimeZone.getDefault returns a wrong timezone and corresponding timezone offset.
    The code snippet with its output is given below.
    Code is as below:
    System.out.println("The default TimeZone is "+TimeZone.getDefault());
    System.out.println("The TimeZoneOffset is "+(TimeZone.getDefault().getRawOffset())/(1000*60)+" minutes");
    System.out.println(System.getProperty("user.timezone"));
    Output:
    The default TimeZone is java.util.SimpleTimeZone[id=Asia/Calcutta,offset=19800000,dstSavings=3600000,useDaylight=false,startYear=0,startMode=0,startMonth=0,startDay=0,startDayOfWeek=0,startTime=0,startTimeMode=0,endMode=0,endMonth=0,endDay=0,endDayOfWeek=0,endTime=0,endTimeMode=0]
    The TimeZoneOffset is 330 minutes
    Asia/Calcutta.
    It would be great if somebody knows what exactly is going wrong. Pls help
    Thank You

    It looks like a bug in Java that was fixed in 1.4 sometime.
    I tried your test using Windows XP and Java 1.4.2. I selected "Rangoon (+6:30)" as my time zone on the Windows Date and Time properties.
    The output I got was:
    The default TimeZone is sun.util.calendar.ZoneInfo[id="Asia/Rangoon",offset=2340
    0000,dstSavings=0,useDaylight=false,transitions=5,lastRule=null]
    The TimeZoneOffset is 390 minutes
    Asia/RangoonI tried with JDK 1.3.1_09 and found it to behave erroneously (interpreted time zone as Asia/Calcutta).

    I tried using both autodeploy and deploying a new app onto WebLogic with the same results

    I fixed this by adding a prefer-application-packages entry into the META-INF/weblogic-application.xml
    <wls:prefer-application-packages>
    <wls:package-name>javax.faces.*</wls:package-name>
    </wls:prefer-application-packages>
    Seems like a conflict between WebLogic 12c javax.faces version and the one included with MapViewer

    Hi, Nodex,
    Avoid implicit conversions.
    For example:
    TO_CHAR(TRUNC(NEXT_DAY(ADD_MONTHS(substr(partition_name, -8, length(partition_name)), -3), 'MONDAY')-7), 'YYYYMMDD')ADD_MONTHS expects a DATE as its first argument.
    SUBSTR returns a VARCHAR2, so you're calling ADD_MONTHS with a VARCHAR2 where it expects a DATE.
    For good or ill, the system tries to avoid raising an error in this case by implicitly converting the VARCHAR2 to a DATE. Exactly how it does that depends on
    (a) the tool you are using (SQL*Plus or Toad, for example),
    (b) the version (Oracle 10 behaved quite different form Oracle 9),
    (c) environmental settings (such as NLS_DATE_FORMAT), which in turn may depend on initialization parameneters, and
    (d) who knows what else.
    When you have to convert, do so explicitly.
    You can convert a VARCHAR2 to a DATE using TO_DATE, like this:
    TO_CHAR ( TRUNC ( NEXT_DAY ( ADD_MONTHS ( TO_DATE ( SUBSTR ( partition_name
                                                       , -8
                                          , LENGTH (partition_name)
                                     , 'YYYYMMDD'     -- or whatever
                             , -3
                      , 'MONDAY'
              - 7
         , 'YYYYMMDD'
         )

  • Having problems with new WebLogic MS SQL driver WLS 8.1

    Hi,
    We've recently migrated our application from WLS 6.1 to WLS 8.1. We use an MS SQL database. In 6.1 we used the (now deprecated) weblogic.jdbc.mssqlserver4.Driver driver. In 8.1 we now use the new weblogic.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver driver. We now are seeing NullPointerExceptions with the new driver that we never saw when running in 6.1 (with the old driver). The exception is occuring at the driver level. I'll paste some of the stack traces below but here is a quick synopsis of our usage pattern:
    -standard get-use-close pattern on the connection for each request (connection is closed in finally block).
    -pool size: min 1, max 7, increment 5
    -test on reserver enabled
    -we are simply reading data (no updates)
    -we use a single thread that hits the database so there is only ever one active application thread hitting the DB.
    -we are using a stored proc.
    -we setTimeout on the statement (initial testing seems to indicate that query timeout seems to be at the root of the problem)
    The problem seems to occur when statement timeouts occur. I can recreate the problem by setting the statement timeout to 1 sec and throwing a lot data at the DB. What seems to occur is a query hits the timeout and a SocketException is thrown, subsequent queries then throw a NullPointer in the driver layer. Again, this is the behavior under WLS 8.1 with the new weblogic.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver driver. If I use the old driver (weblogic.jdbc.mssqlserver4.Driver) under WLS 8.1 all I get is the SocketException (which is what I want). This application ran under WLS 6.1 with the old driver processing millions of queries without any problems.
    We are wondering:
    (1) Is this a known problem?
    (2) Is there a recommended workaround?
    Cheers, and as always thanks in advance for any help.
    Stack traces follow.
    Thank,
    Mich

    Hi,
    Thanks for the prompt reply. In answer to your questions:
    What I would like to know is the exact code/sequence that causes the subsequent exception. See the sequence of calls at the end of this reply.
    Is this in the same thread in the very next call?
    I replicated the problem by going through the Web container (5 clients) therefore WebLogic threads are used in this case. I see from the logs 4-5 different execute threads at work (ex. ExecuteThread: '10' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default').
    Does it happen all the time?
    Although it is tough to tell for sure, once it starts happening it seems to happen most if not all the time.
    Is it an attempted re-use of the same statement, or trying to use a different statement?
    We do a connection.prepareStatement(QUERY_STRING) call everytime (there is only one per request/response cycle). I believe WLS caches statements behind the scenes though so I suspect at that level there is reuse. There is only one stored proc used (we vary the params per call).
    Please show me your pool definition from the config.xml
    file, and I will send you instructions to produce some
    debug info that will get us to the heart of this matter.
    <JDBCConnectionPool
    DriverName="weblogic.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver"
    MaxCapacity="5" Name="THE POOL"
    PasswordEncrypted="XXX"
    Properties="user=XXX;portNumber=XXX;databaseName=XX;serverName=X.X.X.X"
    Targets="Server"
    TestConnectionsOnReserve="true" TestTableName="TEST_TABLE" URL="jdbc:bea:sqlserver://X.X.X.X:XXX"/>Ok, do these things:
    1 - Add our spy attribute to your pool definition, like this:
    <JDBCConnectionPool
    DriverName="weblogic.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver"
    MaxCapacity="5" Name="THE POOL"
    PasswordEncrypted="XXX"
    Properties="user=XXX;portNumber=XXX;databaseName=XX;serverName=X.X.X.X"
    Targets="Server"
    TestConnectionsOnReserve="true"
    TestTableName="TEST_TABLE"
    URL="jdbc:bea:sqlserver://X.X.X.X:XXX;spyAttributes=(log=(file)spy.log;timestamp=yes)"/>
    2 - Edit the start-weblogic script to add the spy jar (wlspy.jar) to the
    classpath that the script creates for the server, eg:
    set CLASSPATH=%WL_HOME%\server\lib\wlspy.jar;%CLASSPATH%
    3 - Reboot and duplicate the problem as briefly as possible.
    4 - In the same directory where you start the server, you will
    now find a file named 'spy.log'. Please send it to me. ( j o e AT b e a DOT c o m )
    I will try to reproduce the problem.
    5 - Ask BEA support for the latest BEA driver package and install it according to
    their instructions. Let me know asap if the probem is still there.
    thanks

    Here is the sequence of calls we make (notice the statement is closed outside the finally however we assume the connection.close should close associated resources):

    Hi All,
              <br>
              <br>
              My application was working fine on weblogic7. Recently i have installed weblogic8.1 SP4. We are using managed weblogic servers. I got noclassdeffounderror for a class on the deployment of the application or on the start one of the servers.
              <br>
              <br>
              <b>Strange thing is that the class it is complaining is there in the jar and the jar is there in the classpath which it displays along with the error.</b>
              <br>
              <br>
              I dont know why its not picking up that class. I verifed the classpath by setting it on command line and then tried to use that particular class and it was working.
              <br>
              <br>
              I also tried to put the particular class in web-inf/classes directory and to my surprise it is also not working. still it is giving the same error. Then I tried to put the jar in the web-inf/lib but even in this case also i got the same error.
              <br>
              <br>
              Is there something wrong in the setup/configuration of the server?? or is it anyway related to the environment(like xp,2000,environment variables etc) where the server is installed?? or is weblogic8.1 has some problem in picking classes form classpath or web-inf/classes/ for some particular cases??
              <br>
              <br>
              Anybody has any idea why weblogic8.1 is behaving this way??
              <br>

  • Active Directory Authentication in Weblogic 8.1

    Hi,
    We want to do authentication from Microsoft Active Directory using weblogic 8.1.
    I have created a Active directory and
    configured weblogic from console to use it. But it is still not working. Your
    help with these question would be highly
    appreciated.
    1. Is there anyone in group who have tried this before. Please let me know how
    to proceed.
    2. Is there any tool by which I can get to know the different attribute asked
    for configuration in Weblogic?
    3. I am not able to login to my application after configuration. Is there any
    other way to come to know whether it is working
    or not?
    There could be plethora of reason but nothing which can come to my mind. Everything
    seems to be configured correctly. Here is
    portion of my config.xml related with authentication:
    <FileRealm Name="wl_default_file_realm"/>
    <PasswordPolicy Name="wl_default_password_policy"/>
    <Realm FileRealm="wl_default_file_realm" Name="wl_default_realm"/>
    <Security GuestDisabled="false" Name="vendavo-dev"
    PasswordPolicy="wl_default_password_policy"
    Realm="wl_default_realm" RealmSetup="true">
    <weblogic.security.providers.authentication.DefaultAuthenticator
    ControlFlag="SUFFICIENT"
    Name="Security:Name=myrealmDefaultAuthenticator" Realm="Security:Name=myrealm"/>
    <weblogic.security.providers.authentication.DefaultIdentityAsserter
    ActiveTypes="AuthenticatedUser"

    Authorizers="Security:Name=myrealmDefaultAuthorizer"
    CredentialMappers="Security:Name=myrealmDefaultCredentialMapper"
    DefaultRealm="true" DisplayName="myrealm"
    Name="Security:Name=myrealm"
    RoleMappers="Security:Name=myrealmDefaultRoleMapper"
    UserLockoutManager="Security:Name=myrealmUserLockoutManager"/>
    <weblogic.security.providers.pk.DefaultKeyStore
    Name="Security:Name=myrealmDefaultKeyStore" Realm="Security:Name=myrealm"/>
    <weblogic.security.providers.authentication.ActiveDirectoryAuthenticator

    Name="Security:Name=myrealmADAuthenticator"
    Principal="vendev" Realm="Security:Name=myrealm" UserBaseDN="ou=Users,dc=devdc,dc=com"/>
    </Security>
    First, of all is it possible to use Active Directory authentication in Weblogic
    without writing any custom code. If yes, how?
    Thanks in advance,
    Amit Tyagi

    Amit,
    We have successfully used WLS 8.1 sp1 with AD - but not without our share of ups
    and downs though.
    |
    |
    1) First, make sure you are sending right LDAP queries to AD. To verify this,
    we used free 3rd party LDAP browser from Softerra. There is also java based free
    browser from Univ of Michigan. Personally, I like Softerra's LDAP browser better.
    Play with your LDAP settings using this and make sure AD is returning the right
    data.
    |
    2) AD has some default settings that makes it return only the top 1000 users.
    Use ntdsutil.exe to modify these default settings
    |
    3) AD needs to have the right set of users and groups. To configure this, refer
    to WLS docs. This is very well documented in WLS docs. Also refer to this article
    http://dev2dev.bea.com/products/wlportal/whitepapers/wlp70_MSADS.jsp as additional
    reference
    |
    4) Also, there are some bugs with 8.1 portal sp1 and AD. It cannot take more than
    one Authentication provider. sp2 is supposed to have fixed it. For sp1 we used
    another product AD/AM (AD in Application Mode) in combination with MIIS server.
    But if you are using sp2, you shouldn't be worry about this.
    |
    5) In your providers, you might want to get rid of the DefaultAuthentication provider,
    once you are able to establish a connection with your ActiveDirectoryAuthentication
    provider. The DefaultAuthentication provider causes some problems and does not
    let ActiveDirectoryAuthentication provider to behave properly. We haven't fully
    investgated the root of this prob. When we deleted DefaultAuthentication provider,
    everything worked normally - so we didn't really care that much :-)
    |
    6) Make sure you have your JAAS options set to OPTIONAL initially and make sure
    your are able to authenticate talk to your AD.
    |
    These are the ones I could think of. Hope this helps..

    Anant

  • Inconsistent message publishing times through weblogic JMS client

    Hi,
    We have a weblogic JMS application which we are deploying in a clustered weblogic enviornment. We are using distributed queues/topics with file store. We have both JMS cliient and server running on separate weblogic clusters. Most of the times it will take about 10 milli seconds to push the message into queue, but 1 in 50 messages takes about anywhere between 0.2 sec to 6 secs. Recently for three days it just took 10 msec for all the messages throught these three days and then started behaving erratically again. I am not able to really figure out why there is lot of deviation in the publishing times. When I monitor both my client and server through admin consiole, I don't see any stuck threads, heap size is normal, cpu load is normal, no problems with network. Please help me to figure out the root cause for abnormal publishing times.
    Regards
    Koti

    Could you check if there are JVM garbage collections during some the publishing times.
    In particular check if there are any full garbage collection occuring when you notice such a deviation in the publishing time.

  • UML (2.0) profile for J2EE/WebLogic

    I am currently creating UML diagrams for deployments of various software releases into various environments in an enterprise. These involve some Java applications including WebLogic. I am on the verge of creating my own UML profile for this, in particular for the WebLogic side of things, with JVMs including WebLogic instances modelled as execution environments, etc. I am also keen to drill into J2EE deployment descriptors to visualize crisp interfaces between J2EE components and the services they require from the J2EE containers, which is "pure" J2EE.
    I imagine I am not the first to do this, and someone must have created profiles already. I have found an old draft specification for a UML/EJB mapping. I imagine the profile I am looking for would be in a UML/XMI format that I can import into my tool (SparxSystems Enterprise Architect), but even just a graphical specification would be of help.
    Does anyone have some pointers to where I should look?
    Andreas

    You're absolutely right. For some reason orion.jar isn't in that distribution. However there should be an oc4j.jar file in there, which behaves exactly as the orion.jar file would. So, any place in the documentation where it refers to orion.jar, just substitute oc4j.jar.
