Webutil and DB transfer

Is there any chance that DB transfer feature will also be available for previous database server versions, like 8i ?
Or they are missing some functionality required for that ?
As far as I know 8i supports BLOBs and loading files into them...

OK, i did some research on my own and here are my findings (correct me if I'm wrong somewhere):
The only missing UTL package is UTL_ENCODE wchich is used for BASE64 encoding/decoding needed for communication with JavaBeans or something like that.
I have found on Metalink forums thread about missing this functionality in oracle 8.1.7, and someone there provided link to free package which implements it.
Assuming it does it's job right, if I replace in WEBUTIL_DB package calls to UTL_ENCODE with the new one, is it all that needs to get it working ?
Of course I know that by using 3rd-party software code this solution may not be supported by Oracle, but it's better than nothing. Oh, I forgot that webutil is not supported anyway right now :)
BTW, I don't understand why Oracle doesn't want to provide this package for earlier releases, it is simple one and not dependant on new features (I think). Instead when people are asking about this functionality the answer is: "Migrating to 9i is the best and only option"...

  • WebUtil and file transfer/manipulation

    Hello,
Currently we are running most of our Forms 6i applications through a citrix server where we have MS Office installed. We use the OLE2 package within Forms to create documents and spreadsheets.
We are looking to upgrade to Forms 9i and may be required to work in several different environments. A problem we have forseen is when 9iAS is to be installed on a Unix (or Linux server) and when the clients will not have MS Office installed (they may or may not be windows based).
Is it possible for the client to request through a 9i Form that a word document is to be opened, created etc and for all processing to take place on a different Windows machine that does have MS Office installed (i.e. not the client or the server) ?
(The documentation seems to assume that all manipulation is carried out on the client machine - CLIENT_OLE2 - or on the server OLE2)
    Thanks
    Tony

This is more a MS Office question than a Forms question. MS Office is a c/s application, thus it runs on the client. I wouldn't know how to run it on another machine.
An option is to connect to Forms via the browser on the citrix server, where you do have MS Office installed. I.e. you don't use your local browser.

  • Webutil and support issues

    Hi,
1: "Pick a forum", a game for young and old.
I haven't posted here before because I've traditionally used the Metalink Forms forum. On failing to get problems resolved there, I've occasionally escalated by raising a TAR. A recent TAR concerned Webutil so I was phoned by a very friendly Support analyst who told me they couldn't help (webutil's still beta), and I should post my comments (see below) here in the 'discussion' forum, because "the product managers read them".
Are the Metalink forums and Discussion forums related in any way? If not why not, and how do I search for help efficiently? (It's only databases, right?) Which forum gives me a better chance of an authoritative answer?
2: It would be very useful to be able to write blob data to the App Server. Are there any plans to provide "webutil_file_transfer.db_to_AS"? If so, good, when? If not why not?
    3: Webutil support (TAR extract):
I think Oracle ... has made a mess. We're encouraged to go Forms 9i because client-server is dying, and must not only pay heavily for the privilege but find once we're there that:
    a) forms plus webutil cannot do everything 6i could. YOUR APP MAY NO LONGER WORK.
    b) not all webutil calls work - yet (e.g. delete_file - awaiting a fix at 1.0.3, whenever that's due)
    c) webutil is not supported at 9i
    d) the webutil documentation (webutil_manual.pdf) is substandard - the only way to deduce details of the (misnamed) procedures is to examine the pll directly and guess how to use them.
    e) the only support is via Metalink, and the only response you get there is 'you can use webutil, read the documentation'. Loop to a).
You could save your users a lot of time (=money) and grief by sticking something similar to the following in all relevant documentation (and passing it on to the Metalink folk):
    Webutil limitations:
    1) Webutil cannot be used to read or write BLOB data directly.
    2) To open a BLOB in an application, you must use webutil's file transfer functions to download to the client (NB NOT the App Server), then use e.g.
    web.show_document(<filename>?mimetype=<whatever>)
    3) To edit a BLOB, the user must download it, make changes then manually
    re-upload.
Finally I'd like to second some comments in other posts about the webutil file_select and file_open dialogs: they confuse users by behaving in a non-Windows manner, and in my experience are unusably slow when exploring large folders.
    All responses most welcome.
    JD

Thank you for your comments- maybe I can address your concerns.
As is stated in the webutil FAQ - webutil "[webutil] is delivered as a preview release and as such is not yet a fully integrated and supported feature of Oracle9i Forms. However, help is provided by the use of the Forms forum."
So, this is correct forum on which to be posting your webutil question.
With respect to your second question about moving blob data to the application server - this is not really within the realms of what webutil is targetting since the need to write data from the database to where the Forms runtime is running is the exact same when running client/server or running on the web.... webutil tends to target those differences in moving to a 3 tier architecture.
    a) There are some difference in architecture between c/s and web and as such there are some limitations. These have been well documented and workarounds indicated.
    b) I assume you refer to bug:<Bug:3151674> which is fixed and in the production candidate release which is documented in the webutil FAQ when this will be released.
    c) Correct - it will be formally supported in 10g - please note however that for Forms 10g is regarded as a minor release to 9i (so you gain many benefits for a minor release change)
    d) Please feel free to post specific comments and we can address these (the misnamed procedure has been fixed).
    e) Until production, support is through the forum.
Regarding the file selection - while you are running on a windows machine you must be aware that the client is actually running in a JVM and so is essentially a Java client. There has been an enhancement request to make this a windows specific dialog.
Could I also draw your attention to http://otn.oracle.com/oramag/oracle/04-mar/o24news.html which documents the great benefit that webutil has brought to a particular development.

  • Pop-up windows with webutil and Forms

    Hello,
We are using webutil for file transfer : webutil_file.xxx
But with oracle forms, it call a black windows to execute the command.
    How to hide this windows?

The pop-up is for a look up table. So for example they can
choose from a drop menu and if your choice is not there then they
can select add to look up and a pop-up open and allows then to
add/edit or delete fields in the look up table. I want to have the
pop-up window adjust dynamically to the size of the look-up
    list....make sense?
You can check it out here.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • MBP (mid-2009) freezing, slow installations and file transfer

I bought the latest MacBook Pro model and installed Snow Leopard on a cleanly formatted hard drive. I have tried migrating via ethernet and FireWire from my iMac, but the migrations failed either due to freezing (via FireWire after roughly 24 hours of file transfer) or by an error message (ethernet with Migration Assistant).
Only through a Time Machine backup was I able to transfer my account files to the MBP, which again totaled at over 20 hours of transferring. The system was a mess, clogged constantly by freezing and spinning beach balls of death for durations lasting around 10-20 seconds during which music would clip after 5-10 seconds of everything not responding, this being accentuated especially during installations. I decided to format and try anew.
Now I've formatted the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and will transfer my files manually onto a clean account. Installations take a long time although SL installation is within 30 minutes, iLife took 1.5 hours to install 5 GB. During the installation Safari stopped responding, as did the entire system, and the spinning beach ball would keep spinning. Watching a 480p trailer in Quicktime made the entire computer freeze up (no video/audio) for 10 seconds halfway. Transferring 136 GB (my Music folder) will take around 15 hours according to the estimate after 10 minutes of transferring.
I've sold my iMac now and all I have are the files on my external hard drive. I want to get them onto my MBP ASAP but the slowness is preventing me from doing what needs to be done and it's very frustrating. When I try to boot into Hardware Testing by holding D down the computer doesn't do it no matter what (Application DVD in or not, plugged into power or not). I've tried resetting PRAM but I get the same inaction.
    Any ideas?
Edit: I've done Disk Utility to no avail, it finds nothing wrong.

Installed, still getting freezes with spinning beach balls. Transfer says it would take 1 hour opposed to that 15 hours, but it stops transferring after X amount of gigabytes (from 0.5 to 5), not do anything for a while and then continue, stretching the estimate to over 2 hours after some time. I don't know if this is just with the hard drive.
The freeze-ups are frustrating as **** and make for a very poor experience. Any ideas to get to the bottom of this? I still haven't been able to boot into the Hardware Test no matter how much I try.

  • I have moved my iTunes library to a new Windows 7 PC and cannot transfer music from the new iTunes PC to my iPhone. The iPhone only accepts transfers from the original iTunes PC.

I have moved my iTunes library to a new Windows 7 PC and cannot transfer music from the new iTunes PC to my iPhone 4S. The iPhone will only accept music transfers from the original iTunes PC. I have come to understand that an iPhone can have only one "daddy" iTunes PC, but have not been able to find out how to change the "daddy". I have done a backup of the iPhone, and a "Restore to Original Settings". Then I restored the content using the new iTunes PC. My Apps and contacts, etc. are back on the iPhone, but it still won't accept music from the new iTunes PC.

What happens when you try to sync the iphone to the new computer?

how can I transfer photos from my comp to my ipad2.I have the connection kit and can transfer photos that are direct from camera BUT if I transfer photos from comp to card it will not recognize them ????

To sync photos from a Mac or Windows PC to your device using photo applications
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
In iTunes, select your device's icon in the Devices list on the left.
    Click the Photos tab.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Note: Some versions of Photoshop Album and Photoshop Elements don't support collections. You can still use them to sync all your photos.
If you want to sync all your photos, enable the option for "All photos, albums, events, and faces." If you want to sync photos from only some albums, events, or faces, enable the option for "Selected albums, events, and faces" and then select the albums you want. If syncing on a Mac with iPhoto version 6.0.6 or later, you may enable the option to "Include videos" to sync videos directly from iPhoto to your device. (Requires iOS 3.0 or later).
    Click Apply.
To sync photos from a folder on your hard disk to your device
Drag the images you want into a folder on your computer. If you want images to appear in separate photo albums on your device, create folders inside the main folder and drag images into the new folders.
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
Select Choose Folder from the pop-up menu and choose your main image folder.
    Click Apply.

  • How can I update a catalog on my laptop and then transfer the updates to master catalog on desktop?

This is similar to Goeffbubbles question but I don't want to have the original files on both laptop and desktop
    Here is the question:
I want to make a copy of a Lightroom 3 catalog to put on my laptop so while on the move I can be geo-tagging and keywording to 8000 photographs. I don't want to drag an external drive with me. I just want to be able to work on the catalog metadata and have all the updates/changes stored there (on the laptop)(in the catalog) and then transfer the catalog back to the desktop (to the primary archive) and have all the updates/changes pushed back into the DNG's or the XMP sidecar files alongside the CR2's. These changes would be only keywording and possibly writing GPS data into them….NOT image edits (that would probally require access to the original image files)
As a test, I tried "exporting as catalog", TWO images (with the source images "unavailable"). I flash-drived the resulting catalog to my laptop. I opened the catalog in LR3 and made changes to the metadata. I tried both "saving metadata to file" and "updating DNG previews" (which would be useless anyway since I could not write data back to the missing originals) and also tried doing nothing and just closing LR,  then pulling the flashdrive and plugging it into the DESKTOP.(knowing the changes are stored within the catalog itself only) I open the 2 picture catalog in LR and see the keyword updates. Hurrah!
I switch over to the master catalog. All I want to do is import the updated metadata (keywording, contrast, etc…) back into the master catalog and push the data into the original DNG or XMP. On import I select "replace: Metadata and develop settings only" (with or without "preserve old settings" checked) and click import. Voila! NOTHING HAPPENS and the updated keywords are NOT picked up.
Where did I go wrong? I know that the metadata updates were carried out because they showed up when I opened it separately in LR! For some reason they don't seem to making through the import process to the master catalog…
Sorry if I am being overly verbose....Any suggestions?

the part you're missing is that you have to be a little more destructive in your creation.
    here are my steps:
In LR, put the files you want to work on in a subfolder of your Primary catalog
Export Folder As Catalog with previews, but without including the DNG's
At your new location/machine work on that catalog.
Here's the part that's no fun, (obviously have a backup of your catalog before you do this)
In your primary catalog REMOVE that folder from your catalog. (this will remove all references within your catalog, but leave the RAW files alone where they were)
You then FILE-->IMPORT FROM ANOTHER CATALOG, and import your subfolder export back into your Primary catalog.
It'll bring all of your changes and previews back into your Primary catalog but with unlinked RAW files.
Click on the question mark in the corner of the thumbnail that's telling you it doesn't know where the source files are and LOCATE the original file again in your file structure, with the FIND NEARBY MISSING PHOTOS box checked.
Overly complicated for what it is, but it gets the job done.
I found your post because it was suggested on the sidebar after I just made a feature request on the same topic.

  • Is it possible to create a new iCloud account and permanently transfer existing store purchases to it?

Is it possible to create a new iCloud account and permanently transfer existing store purchases to it?

Thank you for taking the time to try to answer my question. Let me phrase it slightly differently...
I have a very old appleid that I've used for store purchases. I had a MobileMe account that was upgraded to iCloud. I'd like to merge the account data. I've been hoping Apple would come up with a solution to this, but they haven't yet.
So, I'm wondering if I should make a new account of some sort and try to transfer data to it from both of the old accounts. It sounds like that can't work.
I suppose then that the only thing to do is manually transfer all the information from the old MobileMe account to the primary appleid (which is some sort of iCloud + Store combination, no?). That might not be that hard to do, but it is somewhat high risk.

  • What is the best backup drive to use to backup a windows xp pc and to transfer that data to a new iMac i5 May 2011 and then to backup my iMac on it?

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

  • IPhone 3GS to iPhone 4 - music and apps transfer

Could anyone help me out with this one - I can't seem to find the answer to this within the forum.
I have an iPhone 3GS and will be purchasing an iPhone 4. The issue I have is that my current 3GS was originally synced to my work PC laptop. For some reason I have been unable to access iTunes through my work laptop due to one of the servers linking to it going down (my IT dept have been no help). So, I have purchased music and apps directly from my 3GS.
My question is, if I activate my iPhone 4 on a home Mac, what do I need to do to ensure all of my purchased apps / music from my 3GS will upload to my new iPhone 4? Do I just need to sync my 3GS to the home Mac and open my iTunes?
Also - does it matter anymore if my 3GS was activated with a PC and then get synced with a Mac?
I appreciate anyone's help on this.
    Many thanks
Is it just a case of sycning my 3GS to the home Mac iTunes and then

Connect the iPhone 3GS to the home computer and choose Transfer Purchases from the dialog box which appears or the File menu in iTunes. Once the content is in the iTunes library, sync the iPhone 4.
Don't sync the iPhone 3GS until the content is in iTunes.
