Webutil_file.copy_file slow in copying files

Hi All,
I've read about this problem previously and I'm finally suffering from it myself.
It took between 5 and 10 minutes to copy a 500k file between two network drives connected to my client. How slow is it going to be for the 100Mb files we will want to copy?
Has anyone found a solution? IS the only speedy alternative to use client_host and the copy command? I was hoping that the webutil_file.copy_file was a more elegant solution to the file copying process!!!
TIA
Tony

Hello Tony,
That would be fine if I wanted to transfer from the AS to the client.
But I want to transfer between two network drives on the client,
these drives are not visible to the AS at the moment. My understanding is that the functions are executed on the client and therefor the network drives have to be visible to the client and not to the AS.
But currently i'm working in the OC4J and my server and client are the same.
So it is not really tested.
Is the AS to client copy much faster than the copy_file on the client?
Why would that be? Is it access to network drives on the client that is slow?Yes it is faster. The procedures use different implementations. Files don't get divided in chunks when webutil_file_transfer.AS_to_Client is used.

  • Windows Explorer EXTREMELY slow at copying files from network, but robocopy works

    Hi guys,
I'm having a REALLY BAD performance issue when copying files over from SAMBA 4 to any Windows 7 computer. To copy a folder containing 50 files with a total of 10 MB using the explorer it takes about 20 minutes (!!) at a rate of 3-5 KB/s, but when using robocopy
the same folder takes like 3 seconds to complete. Also, the issue does not occur with older versions of Windows, like Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
Please please please come up with some ideas except the usuals like disabling Remote Differential Compression, disable autotuning using netsh, setting local security policies for NTML authentication or trying new switches / upgrading network drivers or windows.
I DID IT ALL, but nothing helped!
    Thanks in advance!

Linking in your post over on Server Fault in case it gets resolved over there first ;)

  • How slow is too slow when copying files?

    Hi.
First of all I want to apologize if I posted this in the wrong section of the forum.
My question simply related to the speed of copying files from a mac to another computer/FireWire Drive/USB Drive etc...
I realize that depending on the medium you are accessing/writing/copying speeds will vary. But lately I have been getting the general impression that my MacBook has been getting slower at any rate with any of the above combinations. Two weeks ago I reinstalled OS X Tiger (erase&install) just to clean house, and since then I have been doing more copying back and forth than ever. So I am just curious if there is a way to measure or benchmark the actual copying speed (unlike benchmarking apps that send their own little packages) or settings I should be aware of to speed up the process a little.
    Thanks in advance!

I have copied large amounts of files repeatedly and I always get the same time associated by clock. 150 gig of files with FW 400 70 minutes. FW 800 50 minutes. USB forget it takes too long.

  • System slow while copying files

    Hi,
    I found a problem on my iMac 27" (2011).
While I'm copying files from a folder to another in the same hdd (this only happens with the iMac hdd) or when unzip a file my system slows down, if I'm watching a video, sometimes freezes the image and then continues.
    is it normal?
I've tryed to reset PRAM NVRAM, and verify permissions, and nothing seems to solve the problem.

Copying files from one folder to another on the same harddrive puts double duty on the harddrive to read And write the files.  This also consumes CPU cycles, so when watching video, which is data intense from the harddrive or internet also, your system is under heavy load and what you are experiencing is pretty normal.  That is one reason that heavy data and viedo users often upgrade when ordering their machine to extra harddrives, hyperthreading CPU's, more RAM and oversized graphics cards.
    Hopee this helps

  • MacBook Pro unusably slow while copying files over network

I have a 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running at 2.33 ghz. I have a gigabit ethernet connection to my 1TB Time Capsule (which also provides my wired and wireless network services). However, when I copy files to the Time Capsule (simply drag and drop copy OR Time Machine backup) my MacBook Pro suddenly slows ways down and becomes almost unresponsive to the mouse--kinda like the network copy is taking up all the computer's resources. I move the mouse and maybe 10 seconds later the mouse pointer jerks across the screen and then stops. I literally can't do anything on my computer until the file transfer stops. This also happens when I copy to or from other Macs on the network.
It also happened before I switched to using the Time Capsule...i.e. when I was using a LinkSys router.
    I'm running OSX 10.5.2.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to where I should be looking for possible solutions to this problem? Or is this quite normal? (surely not!).
    Thanks in advance.

Kappy: I think it's only 100mbps because Network Utility says 100mbps, and the router is (to the best of my knowledge) only 100mbps.
mindaugas: Thanks for the reply. I dont think the ports on it are gigabit as you said (source: http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt160n/4505-3319_7-32815481.html "The Linksys WRT160N doesn't support the faster Gigabit standard for wired connection, nor does it have USB support"). Anyway, don't think it's overheating, since I'm not having any problem with resetting or dropped connections, just slow. Still, I'm starting to think it can't be much else other than a problem with the router somewhere. Taking it back isn't an option, but maybe I'll stick with it as long as possible and get a better router soon.
Just a thought, could this be anything to do with 802.11g devices connecting to the router as well? Or does this not matter? (Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm no networking expert)

  • TC Extremely slow when copying files from an external HDD

I have a new TC, everything works well. Now I am trying to copy my iTunes library from an external HDD that is hooked on the USB of the TC. The directory is well over 300GB, the estimated time of completion is 70+ hours, that can be?!
Last week I copied all my pictures from the same external HDD to another drive via USB connection on my laptop and the directory was about 200GB, it took about an hour.
Is there anything wrong or is this normal?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ilias

Thanks for the quick answer. I was not clear enough though, I want to copy my iTunes library onto the TC from my external USB drive. The iTunes library is to stay on the TC so that I can always access it without the need of having an external HDD always connected to the TC.
What I do not want is the library on my MacBook.
    DOes that make sense?
    Yes, that's what I thought.
However you connect things, the copying process is done +*by your Mac,+* not the TC.
As I said, connect the USB drive directly to your Mac, and your Mac to the TC via Ethernet if at all possible. That will still take a while, since Ethernet is much slower than USB, but at least you won't have the data going back and forth through the TC. The data will go from the USB drive to your Mac, then to the TC via Ethernet.
If you leave the USB drive connected to the TC, the data will be copied from the USB drive, through the TC, to your Mac, then back to the TC's internal HD.

  • Very slow when copy files to Window Server by SMB

I have a Windows Server 2003 as a file server, at first mac client connect it whith no problem by SMB , but now, just copy a 5kb jpg file to the windows server will cost more than 5min, then we set up Apple Share on windows with errors, but Apple Share can be seen on windows, and mac client use AFP still can not see share folder, and I find error log as:

All of the mac client is OS X 10.4.8 or later(the PowerMac G5 or new MacPro),
Is there anyone know how to solve this problem

I use many SMB shares at my office and the only speed issues I encounter are due to network bandwidth and overall server load. In other words, no different from an SMB client on any OS.
How many Windows PCs also connect to this server? Do the two groups use different segments of the network? Swap one of the Macs and one of the Windows PCs so they're in each other's previous segment, and do your speed tests again.

  • Copying files from an external HD extremely slow!

    Hi everybody.
    Thank’s to read this message.
    I’ve a MacBook Pro 13” (mid 2009) core2duo 2.26 Mhz whit 2GB ram and running Snow Leopard 10.6.2
The system runs perfect until i try to copy something from an external drive, takes a lot of time to copy it, for example a 600 mb file takes almost 15 minutes, thats ridiculous, the problem is only when the info comes from an external drive and not from the machine to an external drive.
I’ve tried whit tree different external HD and cables, whit four different USB flash memories, happened the same whit the SD slot and whit the CD drive, the size of the files or the content doesn’t matter is slow whit anything, I thought in the external drives format (FAT32 most of them) but happened the same whit the Time Machine disk whit HFS+ format, yesterday i copy a 4.5 GB folder whit videos and photos from time machine HD and took 4, yes 4 hours!!
Is a serious problem because while is copying a file uses all the machine resources and i can’t do anything else until finish writing the file. Also i think is not an Snow Leopard problem, cause i tried to install Windows XP whit Bootcamp and in the part when the system copy files from the CD to the HDD happened the same, just took extremely lot of time and i had cancel it.
I already reset the PRAM, repaired the hard disc and made a test whit the Hardware test tool in the Snow Leopard disc but can’t find something wrong.
Well, thats the problem, any idea or comment is appreciate, thanks a lot

Hi Eww, thanks a lot for your answer
Thats a good idea, but why happens the same when i'm out of Snow Leopard, i mean installing windows xp goes very slow.
I think should be something that controls the in and out information flow, but i don't know.
    Any other idea??

  • Copying files either very slow or doesn't work at all

I've tried copying files from a DVD to an external drive, and from one external drive to another, and I've been running into troubles on my Mac Pro, namely, I get an error code 36 (corrupted files) and the copying process hangs, requiring me to reboot. However, I was able to copy the files from the DVD to my laptop HD, so I don't think that corrupt files is the problem. After rebooting my Mac Pro, I was able to copy files from one external drive to another, but it was incredibly slow (about 1GB per hour), and I was still unable to copy files from the DVD to an external drive. I've verified all the disks with Disk Utility, and I've repaired disk permissions on my Mac Pro HD but apparently need to re-run since when I verify permissions again, I'm still getting a lot of errors or comments like "Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/rlogin" has been modified and will not be repaired". Scanning my Mac Pro HD for viruses, quite a few files are coming up with the comment "did not have permission to open the file." Other than continuing to repair disk permissions, does anyone have suggestions about what might be causing this and/or on possible next steps?

A little further info - I checked permissions and I have permission to copy the files in question. Also, it seems that most of the errors that pop up when I verify permissions are of the type that can safely be ignored, according to Apple -- I'll go through the list later and cross-check them to make sure that they're all ignore-able, but thats what they appear to be.

  • Errors and slow performance copying lots of files between large hard drives

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have VERY slow file transfer speed with external eSATA drives. While trying to upgrade from a 1.5TB drive to a new 2TB drive, the copy took almost 24 hours and then failed on a large Fusion virtual OS file.
So I removed my eSATA card from my Mac Pro and connected the drives via FireWire 800. Same issue. I have the 10.6.1 update and reset the PRAM with no improvement.
Tried doing the copy with SuperDuper, and I have the same speed issue, but checking their log I see some of the files that Finder tried to copy, SuperDuper found another way to copy. Others it fails on. Here's a log of one of the files it could copy (but Finder couldn't):

There is indeed plenty of space left on the device... over 1.5TB in fact.
Not sure what is going on here. I have 4GB of RAM, and heard Snow Leopard needs twice as much as Leopard. Am I running out of RAM due to the large amount of files? Or is it some incompatibility with large drives and Snow Leopard? I did not have these problems with Leopard, and I was using these same drives.

I, too, am experiencing extremely long copy times (17 hours on 5GB) when copying numerous (200+) files from an external HD via FW 400. The same happens when I try to copy files using FW 800.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the copying times?

  • Copying files is extremely slow!

Suddenly I have a large problem copying files.
Briefly: I keep my iTunes library (mostly video - movies, TV shows) on an external drive. Suddenly copying a TV show (about 650 mb) that normally takes about 10 seconds either takes extremely long or causes a total freeze up.
What happened: The first time it happened it got up to about 30 MB copied and the estimated time kept climbing from about 5 minutes to 8 minutes to 15 minutes etc. My machine froze completely and I had to do a forced shutdown. When I tried to restart, the startup disc wasn't recognized and I got the folder with the question mark icon. I restarted in target mode to use Disk Utility from my laptop, but it didn't recognize the drive at all. I restarted with the original installer disc and did a hard drive verification. At the end I got the message "Filesystem verify or repair failed" and the only error shown was a difference in the number of free blocks. (maybe because I shut it down in the copying process?) I did a disc repair which ended successfully, and I could reboot from the internal hard drive again.
I thought maybe a corrupted video files was the problem, so I tried to copy a similar file over with the same result. Only this time, after the boot up drive wasn't recognized, it also didn't show up in the Disc Utility from the installer disc! Assuming I had to take it in for repair with a dead internal hard drive, I shut it down. But hours later, just for grins, I started it up again, and this time Disk Utility on the installer disc did recognize the internal hard drive and i could do the disc repair again.
I plugged the external drive into my laptop and copied a similar file over, which took the usual 10 seconds, so it is not the external drive causing the problems.
So I did a test by just using option-drag to make a copy of the same file, which didn't cause the total freeze up, but it did take over 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds. Same result with a similar video file, so the fist video file isn't corrupt I guess.
Everything else seems to be normal now, but file copying is extremely slow. The boot up time is also normal.
At several points in this ordeal I ran Cocktail and did a PRAM reset. I usually use Cocktail maybe twice a month and never had a problem, so I don't think it was the culprit.
Any ideas out there about what my problem might be?
    Thanks!

    Oops!
Just saw that I hadn't updated my hardware profile, so I just did.

  • Very Slow Copying Files

I have My External Hard Drive connected to my air port extreme base station. I have the latest firmware update. While copying files or using time machine to back up my computer, the speed is extremely slow max speed is 2.2 mpbs but bounces from 200kbps to 2.2 mbps constantly. I am with in 5 feet of the base station everything else works fine including internet speed.

i have the same problem over here. Been looking around the internet, tried different configurations, nothing helps. 3min for 15M.
just wondering: is it possible my file is transmited over the internet and back, instead of directly over the local network to my Airport disk or other computer?
Not sure if it has anything to do with it but when I look at my filesharing config, it says: Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at afp://xx-xx-xxx-xxx.access.telenet.be/ or "yyy". where x is my IP and yyy is my bonjour-name.
why is my provider in that afp-path?
    anyone any idee?

  • Can't copy files to hard disk

I have been having trouble copying/moving files to an external hard drive from my Macbook Air 3,2. I have moved and copied files from the MacBook Air many times to the external hard disk but this time I am having a lot of trouble.
I tried to move 2 movie files but it was taking an incredibly long time. So I clicked the "x" to cancel the transfer. However, it didn't stop it straightaway. The transfer just remained in limbo. Then I got a message saying something about how I didn't disconnect the hard disk properly and the hard disk just seemed to have disconnected itself from my computer even though I didn't eject it.
Then it caused problems for my MacBook Air. When I went to check on the disk in Utilities, it told me I had to use the installation disk to start it up. Other strange things happened like my desktop picture just disappeared and suddenly I had an extra 10GB on my hard drive.
I repaired the disk successfully using the installation thumb USB drive.
(I also repaired the external hard disk).
But I am having the same problem again when I try to move files onto the hard disk. It doesn't seem to work, as it's incredibly slow and when I cancel it, it says I ejected the hard disk wrongly. And the drive does not appear in the Finder Window.
I don't know why this is happening to me. I repaired the MacBook Air HD and I also repaired the external disk and I can't copy movie files onto the hard disk. I have enough space and both disks are Mac Ext Journal formatted. I copied lots of movies the other day (about three days ago and last night) onto the hard disk without any problems.
I really need to move the movies from my computer as I will runn out of disk space on the computer soon (I have about 12 GB left right now).
I tried copying a jpg picture as a test, and it copied it OK but it took a long time. Much longer than normal.
I got an error message just now:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Elechxxxxxxxxxx.mp4” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
I never got this sort of error message before but now I am getting this message today several times when I try and copy the movies. I don't think it's the files themselves because I copied the same sort of movie files last night without any problem.
And as I said, the jpg file took a really long time to copy, like 2 minutes even though it's only a very small file.

This is not about saving the data on the external drive but I found this information to be helpful in case people have problems ejecting a drive:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1322931
    I threw the following:
    sudo umount -vf /dev/disk1s1
and the drive umounted. -v is verbose, just in case there were any errors thrown I wanted to know, and -f is force umount, which forces the drive to unmount. Check 'man umount' from terminal to see more info on these.
After doing this a couple times (I was doing some testing with some other things to find a faster solution than having to open terminal and umount) it just started umounting correctly. I have no idea why, but it did. So just keep that command in mind, just in case.
    Gryyphyn, out.
This may prevent the drive from being damaged by incorrect ejection. Because I could not eject the drive using force eject, restarting the computer etc, I unplugged the drive, which damaged the hardware of the drive.
If I had known about the command window method, I might have  been able to avoid all these problems now that I have with a damaged drive and trying to rescue the data on that drive.
That being said, I think Apple should try and resolve this problem they have with users not being able to eject drives. It seems to be a VERY common problem, and has nothing to do with users' negligence but to do with a systemic fault of Apple's.

  • Copy file from SMB share to Desktop permissions

I have connected to a SMB share point (Windows Server)and copy a file to my desktop (Mac OS X 10.6.4).
The file on my desktop shows I have the read and write access, however, everyone has no access.
I could not get the system administrator to change on the server side. Is it possible to make any changes from my machine to make at lease every has read only access?
    Thanks in advance.

I downloaded D2KWUtil from the link suggested by you. It has very nice example demo form. But the documentation provided says following
Using D2KWUTIL in Web Deployed Applications
The use of this library is not supported with Web deployed applications.
In a web deployment scenario not all functions within D2KWUTIL will work. Any function that interacts with the User Interface (such as those in the WIN_API_DIALOG package) will fail.
Any interaction with the O/S by other functions will all be executed on the NT server and will act within, or return information pertinant to, the environment on that machine. For instance GET_COMPUTER_NAME will return the Server’s name, not the name of the computer that the Client browser is running on. Likewise COPY_FILE will copy files in the Forms Server not on the Client.
Functions such as those in WIN_API_BITOP will continue to work without change.
so this will not work in web deployed application.
    Any other suggestion?
    Thanks
