Weird Kernel Errors accessing Network Volume

Hallo everybody. I have a very strange problem with a customer who uses about 20 macs. Different machines. No new Intel Macs. All G5 machines. The customer has a network with abouth 20 machines. 100 Mbit Network connection to a Helios (Sun) FileServer. The Uplink to the server is Gigabit and this all goes threw Cisco Networking Switches. Now to my Problem this still exists since 10.4.0. The Macs randomly crashes bei placing pictures in Quark. Let me explain. The customer goes to "placing picture" in quark. Browsing the network volume and than it crashes before they can click on the button import. As first i thought it was a Quark Problem. But quark can not help me. Than i thought it was a finder dialog problem and deactivated all previews and all the other stuff. Nothing helps. Now 10.4.9 comes out and I was full in hope that this fixes my issues because Apple said they updates Finder Network Browsing.
But now the things go crazier. Sometimes the crashes are in Photoshop by saving a picture or open a picture. And of course in Quark with pacing a picture. Now i really do not know what i can do.
I will post here because i hope that someone can help me.
Here is the Kernel Error Log file:

Sorry, poor eyesight when I typed sysct, meant... The sysctl variables like...
Not certain these work for Network, or just Internet !??
The settings shown below are given in a good faith there is not at all any guarantee that it will work perfectly for you.
Lets give it a try and run the following commands from the command line:
sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.mssdflt=1460
sysctl -w kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=131070
sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65535
sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.recvspace=65535
sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.newreno=1
A word on MTU or mssdflt...
Different Servers may have different MTUs, and that can cause Havoc, here's some guides on that issue...
Setting MTU size is a process of trial-and-error: start with the maximum value of 1500, then reduce the size until the problem goes away. Using one of these values is likely to solve problems caused by MTU size:
• 1500. The largest Ethernet packet size; it is also the default value. This is the typical setting for non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. The default value for NETGEAR routers, adapters and switches.
• 1492. The size PPPoE prefers.
• 1472. Maximum size to use for pinging. (Bigger packets are fragmented.)
• 1468. The size DHCP prefers.
• 1460. Usable by AOL if you don't have large email attachments, etc.
• 1430. The size VPN and PPTP prefer.
• 1400. Maximum size for AOL DSL.
• 576. Typical value to connect to dial-up ISPs.
Another way to change the MTU is by...
sudo ifconfig en0 mtu 1460
Or whatever interface for en0, or different mtu value.
These will all be lost with a restart, but might help in diagnosing.
Starting to sound like some flakey HW with the week or so going good !???

So, you're having problems writing to a Network Published Shared Variable? You might be able to troubleshoot this using the NI Distributed System Manager software. Using this software, you should be able to see all of the Network Published Shared Variables that are hosted on this computer and all of the other computers on the network. You can try to change these variables using this software. If you have the same problems with the shared variables using this software, then it probably means that there are problems with the network in general such as a firewall that is blocking the communication.
You can check to see if you have this by navigating to Start>>All Programs>>National Instruments>>Distributed System Manager. If you don't have it already, you can download it here: http://www.ni.com/download/ni-distributed-system-manager-2013/4216/en/.
This knowledgebase article might contain some helpful hints about how you could approach this problem: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/6E37AC5435E44F9F862570D2005FEF25?OpenDocument

  • Access network volumes through Terminal

We currently use Applescript to connect to other Macs on our network, using:
tell application "Finder" to mount volume "afp://JJMC:[email protected]/"
Is there a Terminal equivalent of this instruction?

    Just a stab at this,
    see http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/mount_af p.8.html
for more information. "/<mntpoint>" is the directory that you want to mount the filesystem on.
    sudo mount_afp afp://JJMC:[email protected] /<mntpoint>

  • Suppress Finder's "Cant Find Network Volume" Message @ Login Time

I manage 200 Mac desktops and laptops - all running Leopard. I manage the Macs with Open Directory via MCX policies using Workgroup Manager. One of the main things I manage for my users is Login Items. For example, various SMB network volumes get mounted at login time. When a Mac user is on the LAN and able to access the domain and file servers, the SMB volumes get mounted "automatically" via MCX computer and group policies. The mounts are mounted in /Volumes and appear on the user's Desktop. This is great for desktop users with static Ethernet connections, but for laptop user this poses a major problem which could easily be "fixed' by Apple. Let me explain:
When mobile users (laptop users) are off the LAN (i.e.; they are on the road, working from home, etc) the Mac attempts to find the SMB network volumes that are read part of the locally cached MCX policies when the user(s) log in. Of course, since the user isn't on the LAN (or connected via VPN,etc) Finder throws a generic error "The network volume could not be found"). This message is easily dismissed, and isnt a big deal if it only pops up once, but my users have SEVERAL SMB mounts configured as login items, and thus my users get prompted with the aforementioned Finder error messages several times. Each message stacks up top of the other as each connection attempt times out. Ouch! This has become the #1 complaint my Mac users have and it has reached the ears of senior IT managers and directors. Keep in mind most of my laptop users travel the planet on lecture tours and are on the road for weeks at a time, and thus they deal with the Finder messages several times a day for weeks on end (and sometimes in front of an audience if the said laptop is connected to a projector for a Keynote/PowerPoint presentation etc). The message provides no useful info. My users are savvy enough to know the auto-mounted network shares aren't available - they dont need "help" from Finder.app. They want to log in and get to work, and not be bothered by the barrage of redundant errors from Finder for 10 minutes!
I have attempted to design an AppleScript that could "intercept" the Finder messages and dismiss them automatically, but it hasnt worked thus far. I have also researched autofs and other Apple technologies to figure out a way to avoid these errors. No luck.
    Request:
I would like to request a way to set the preference to have these messages ignored/bypassed or disabled. A simple check box to avoid these messages is all I want.
I submitted a bug report to Apple requesting a "fix" (ticket 6172962).

Two suggestions. 1) post AppleScript queries to its forum under OS X Technologies. 2) post server queries to the appropriate server forum.

  • Excel 2008, read-only file access from network volume

    Hi,
    Need some assistance please.
    I recently setup a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4Ghz (10.5.2) and did a migration from a Powerbook G4. Installed Office 2008.
Excel will not open ANY files from a network volume without giving a read-only access error.
Word is ok and opens files fine.
drag the file from the network to the desktop and it opens ok. drag it back and it copys ok.
so, I created a new user and the problem persists.
I fired up a Macbook running 10.5.2 and Office 2008 and it logged onto the network fine and opened the excel docs just fine.
mmm, ok must be an OS problem.
So, I have just endured waiting for the archive and install to complete on the Macbook Pro and the problem is still there !!!!!
    Help.
Is my only fix going to be a complete erase and start again from fresh ?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

right then, as it looks like I'm talking to myself....
I have just wiped clean the Macbook Pro.
I installed Leopard from scratch, then installed Office 2008.
Logged back onto the network share, and the read-only error came up again, ONLY in Excel.
    bugger.
Did the same thing with my Macbook and all is fine.
Copy the file to the local hard drive, opens ok.
I then copied the file to another Mac on the network.
    mmmm, opens fine.
    what's the difference....
mmmm, the machine it opens fine from is running 10.4
the machine which hosts all the data is running 10.3.9
    could this be the problem.
Just done a software update check on the 10.3 machine and there are some security updates that need doing.
Going to run that now and see what happens, otherwise I think the iMac running 10.3.9 is going to need to come up to 10.4 and fingers crossed this will solve it.

  • Read-only file access from network volume

I get an read-only file access from network volume problem while sharing a drive from Snow Leopard to a Tiger install. Most of files were opening well, but *.fp7 (FileMaker) and *.xls (Excel) files won't open dealing with a read-only error.
As descibed in the last post of http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1406977 the client have the same share name of the server. Renomming it resolved the error!
    Thanks!

  • Error exporting to a networked volume?

    Hi,
we are using iMovie HD 6 in a network and save the project files to a remote volume hosted on a Xserve. The project file can be worked on without any issues and saves without errors. However when we try to Export or Share the project we get a -5000 error which states the following:
Please make sure that your project disk has write permission, and that you have enough disk space. (Error -5000)
    1. The Xserve share is using ACLs and the user has Read and Write access to his/her directory.
    2. The networked directory is owned by admin.
    3. The user can create and delete files and folders on the remote volume without problems.
    4. The project can be Exported or Shared to the local machines desktop.
    Any pointers would be helpful.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

When I type %appdata% into run nothing comes up. I have been through lots of other threads and cannot find a solution so ive made my own please help!

You can download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/ - run the downloaded installer, then start the
program from Start | Programs | Windows Install Clean Up.  Select Adobe Reader, then click 'Remove'.
N.B. I've heard that this program can cause problems if Office 2007 is installed; don't use it if you have Office 2007!
The above tool helps you to uninstall Adobe Reader, but it will not fix the basic problem with the corrupt %APPDATA% environment variable.  You can try to fix it with http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/
P.S. this software is still beta; I strongly recommend to make a System Restore Point before proceeding.  Let us know if you need any help with this (and please state your Windows version if you do).
