Weird permissions issue update

(see thread below for 7/12/08 "Weird permissions issue"
I re-installed the 3.1.1 final version of CCC, did another backup, (both HD and clone now had Security update installed (as was the case with the backup using the CCC beta) and, voila, no more permissions errors there either.
So, it would seem, the problem stemmed from the differing security packages, not CCC.
BDAqua: I owe you points. Thanks again for your help.
By the way, is there any conceivable Mac executed scenario by which files can end up in the trash (besides "recovered files") without intentionally placing them there, (not counting sleepwalking and unresponsive, zombie states)? This has happened.

There were about 7 or 8, all documents: Appleworks.cwk or Word or Word.doc. and one was saved in Simple Text. They were related in content and could have come from a few places as they were grouped, saved in several locations, but really impossible to trace where they resided just before they ended up in Trash.
I don't want anyone to get too bothered about this. It's one of those things I guess they call an anomaly when no suitable explanation can be found. I was just curious to know if it can happen according to some process in Tiger I don't know about.

  • Weird Ram Issue Update

I previously posted that I could not get my MacPro(s) to see the B Riser ram. i have now discovered that it will see the ram if 4 sticks are present. If there are only 2 sticks, only the A Riser is observed. The weirder thing is that this happens in BOTH of my MacPros, one a 3 gog and one a 2.66.

    Most unusual indeed.

  • Updating link to Word Doc is causing a permissions issue

Hi.  I am attempting to update a link to a Word file, and it is causing a permissions issues in Word when I try to open the Word document back up while the InDesign file is still open.
Is there any way to link to a Word document that can be worked on while the InDesign file is being worked on?  I think I can use buzzword as an alternative, but I'm looking for the easiest possible solution.
    Thanks!
    Alicia

Word checks for locked files. In that if another app is using the file, you can not open the file until the other app closes the file. It does this to make sure word has the lastest version of the file. This is partly due to word being using in an office environment were multiple people can be working on the same document.
Since word is fairly quick to open. You could use the edit original icon in the links panel of InDesign. Make your changes in word once the document opens, then use the keyboard shortcuts ctrl-s to save and alt-F4 to close word.

  • Permissions Issues after java update...

So, I noticed after I got the java update awhile back that the permissions associated with it are wrong.
disk utility tries to repair it, claims it does, but still needs to be repaired afterwards. anybody else have this issue, so would it be normal?
I can post the output from disk utility if you guys need it.

It's normal. Not all permissions issues are ever resolved with any update. Unfortunately ever since 10.1.5 had permissions repair features, it never has 100% eradicated permissions issues. Though repairing permissions before and after each update helps, you'll never see a message that all permissions are repaired. As long as there aren't any other issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Permissions Issue, Colour Wheel, Hard Drive Issue??

    Hi!
I have had issues with my mid 2009 MBP recently and I'm wondering what the best way to fix them would be.
First off, I have some major permissions issues with my accounts.  I am using 3 different users regualrly on the same machine and needed to access files from the home folder so I changed them a long time ago, and am not sure how to fix that.  I have repaired the permissions countless times in the disk utility and it seems like there's always loads more to do each time.  When I varify the disk, it says its all okay.
Secondly, I have had the machine freeze on me several times while doing very little on it.  This happened awhile ago, and thought that it was just the permisions thing and so I did that again, and it started working better, for awhile.  It would go a few days or weeks before doing the same thing, sometimes not even getting past the apple logo on startup before freezing.  This makes me think it may be a hard drive issue???????
This morning, I tried dozens of times to boot, with no success at all.....  until about the 25th time when it miraculasly booted.  I have run permissions repair a few more times and it seems to be working okay at the moment, but the problem seems to be happening more often over time.
To complicate matters, I am traveling at the moment and will not be home for several months.  I purchased an external harddrive last night and was able to successfully back up my data.
Question 1: Is it the permissions that are causing these problems, or is it related to something else.  The computer seems to work fine when its working, and then once in awhile, decides its not going to do anything.
Question 2:  Would upgrading to Lion (currently running 10.6.8) fix the permissions issues or just carry them forward?  I would like to consolidate the 3 users into one, if that would solve it.  Does the migration utility preserve permissions or does it give you a brand new start?
Question 3:  If neither solving the permissions or the OS upgrade would fix the problem and it does need a new harddrive, is it possible to buy one and install it myself?  I do not have apple care left on this machine and am on a very tight budget.  I am used to taking things apart and all that as part of my job and it seems simple enough.  Where can you buy a replacement??
Hopefully someone out there will be able to help me out on this one.
    Cheers!!!!
    Brian

Disk Utility permissions are separate from User account permissions.
This link is how to fix them
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2181549?start=0&tstart=0
Disk Utility will always show something to be needing repair, but that's ok
    Apple supoort doc.

Verify Disk is good, that's a good thing.

Your data is backed up, hopefully not with TimeMachine alone, but if you did, then get another drive and backup data manually to that as well. If the TM drive gets messed up, it's a pain to get your data off of it.
Question 1: Is it the permissions that are causing these problems, or is it related to something else.  The computer seems to work fine when its working, and then once in awhile, decides its not going to do anything.
Well you could call Apple for replacement 10.6.x disks, and just reinstall 10.6 and bundled programs, but this can kick out kext files out of the /System/Library/Extensions folder installed by some third party software.
This method fixes OS X, but doesn't touch your files or most programs.
Nor will this method fix your Users accounts if the issue is in there.
A creation of a new user, then deletion of the others, return files from backup (set permissions) will fix User folder issues if the above user permissions fix doesn't work.
(Of course you could wipe the drive from the 10.6 disk, but you have to install all software again)
Would upgrading to Lion (currently running 10.6.8) fix the permissions issues or just carry them forward?
No, you don't want to install Lion, it won't fix those issues in User folders, not only that Lion has it's own issues and doesn't work with a lot of older software etc.   No use clusterfscking a already bad situtation when it's seems it's only localized to the User accounts.
I would like to consolidate the 3 users into one, if that would solve it.
Yes that could very nicely and tidy up things in the process.
What you do is transfer all files to one regular powered storage hard drive.
(Don't use/disconnect the TimeMachine drive for this as it preserves the users seperated and you don't want all those users back restoring  with Migration Assistant)
Create the New User on the machine as Admin, log into it and delete all the other Users, transfer all your files back from the regular storage drive, changing all the permissions to yourself before placing them into their respective folders as they will have three different permissions.
    Notes:
If you have a extensive iTunes playlists on one User (say #1), then create the new user with that same name (will require some work, create User 4, delete Users 1-3, reboot, create User 1, delete User 4) then transfer your iTunes folder to Music of that User 1 (same name as before). This will preserve the pathnames of your song locations and your playlists will be preserved.
(before you ask, no you can't combine playlists)
Also if you have photo's in iPhoto Library, you have to right click on it and "show package contents" inside is a folder called Originals, copy them out and import into the iPhoto of the User #1.
Does the migration utility preserve permissions or does it give you a brand new start?
Yes it preserves user permissions, no it doesn't give you a brand new start. Only a fresh install, creation of new users and then just transferring of files does that.
Nothing about TimeMachine or Migration Assistant gives one a "fresh start", it's if hosed, so is your restore.
If you want that sort of pristine protection, you need to clone your ideal boot partition/drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (free/donationware) occasionally as a hold the option key bootable drive, then you can erase and reverse clone the pristine saved clone.
One can also update the clone on occasion, this way keeping the clone pristine.
I maintain 3 clones time dated, even have my boot drive partitioned 50/50 and auto-cloned, this way I have two boot partitions on the road and two externals at home.
I never use TimeMachine, it's not bootable (well it is on 10.7.2 only to restore though)

  • Permissions Issues

I am sure that most of you who read these forums already know about recent updates that create permissions issues. I was not sure how to deal with them and needed to verify for myself what was causing them and to convince myself that they are benign. I just wanted to share the evidence with you that I monitored over a day. Specifically, what is causing these benign permissions errors are three Apple updates: Front Row Update (2.1.7) 13.3 MB (worst offender), iTunes (8.1) 65.4 MB, and iLife Support (9.0.1) 3.7 MB. I assume Apple has heard about this by now. Here are my lengthy test results:

CONCLUSION: This is one of Apple's infamous permissions error that just "has to be ignored" and will not get fixed.

    FINAL CONCLUSION:
The following installers create unusual Permissions issues that do not seem to go away but seem to not be a danger.
Front Row Update (2.1.7) 13.3 MB (worst offender)
    iTunes (8.1) 65.4 MB
    iLife Support (9.0.1) 3.7 MB

    GWD2008,
I too am having permissions issues with Front Row, iTunes, and iLife it happen just after the update. However researching into the problem they are just shortcuts to an original files. Which on the original files Permissions are correct and the reason the permissions are wrong on the shortcuts is because of the little l. I was unable to fix the permission error myself in Terminal and in Finder. And in my opinion as long as the programs are running with no problems its nothing to be to concerned over. As for ACL or SUID files you can just ignore according to apple. See this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
    Resolution
You can safely ignore any "SUID file" or "ACL found but not expected..." message. These messages are accurate but are not a cause for concern.

  • A notice that a security update is available but UI do not have permissions to update, which I clearly do; I run Mac OS 10.6.4 and I am the administrator.

    I received a notice of a security/stability update to FireFox 3.6.3.
I have a MacBook Pro 13" running OS 10.6.4. The claim is that I do not have permission to upgrade and I should consult with my system administrator.
I am the administrator of this machine. I do not have another system administrator. I have never had this issue before, either with Firefox or any other software.
I restarted Firefox and logged in again but the same thing happened
''(edited to stop the post from scrolling to the right)''

    Try doing a clean install.
    # Download the Firefox installer from http://www.mozilla.com
    # Trash the current Firefox application
    # Now try installing the new version of Firefox ([[Installing Firefox on Mac]])
Doing the above will not remove your user data, that is stored elsewhere in the [[profiles|profile folder]], though if you wish you can back that up first
If you are still having problems with privileges see [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963?viewlocale=en_US troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X]

  • Permissions issues?  !!sabotage!!

Colleague phoned at end of day - "was I working on server?" - she had been connected all day, but now could not create a new folder on a share...
she could access all folders and read but not write...
she is member of group with read/write privileges.
I logged in as her and confirmed this, logged in as her co-worker, he retained full access.
Permission inspector revealed that about half of 36 employees had somehow lost read/write permission and downgraded to read only.
I created another version of the staff group (renamed it), added to the ACL, this too had read only for certain staff members.
    Propagating permissions did not help...
adding the 36 staff as individuals rather than as group allowed me to give them read/write access, but clearly 36 was slow- if one had a larger workforce this would be totally unacceptable...I would rather work with groups or department teams rather than individual accounts.
This is third time in six weeks that permissions have been lost.
I'm in a transitional role looking after a system set up by a late colleague - I cannot believe that this situation is down to my stewardship.
Is it possible that an employee is somehow tweaking permissions to make me look bad? !!just my PARANOIA!!
I did change existing passwords after last incident...
    Any guidance,please?

  • Permissions issues and installing FCP Studio - admin has no privileges

    Hello
Compressor 2.01 was crashing to I pulled out the universal binary updater discs and decided to finally upgrade. When I run the installer, I get the following error when I input my serial number:
"Licensing Error: The license file will not be written to disk because the user does not have enough privileges."
I am an Admin user on the Mac.
I recently (this morning) ran Disk Utility and fixed permissions. I also booted into single user mode and ran FSCK. Those things are supposed to FIX permissions issues, not cause them, right?
I also ran permissions fix a few minutes ago - after I got this message. The error message still pops up.
    What can I do?
    Thanks,

  • Permissions issue - schema assignment?

    Hi,
Running application express 2, Oracle 9i (I know!)
I'm looking into using apex as an alternative to crystal reports for some of our staff, they only use crystal to generate xls documents so apex should work fine for them. However I'm running into a permissions issue, most likely due to my lack of understander of how workspaces and schemas really work together.
We have some internal tools written in APEX which I don't want these new developers to be able to mess with, so I've created a new workspace called "crystal", I've also created a schema "crystal_apex" which has been assigned to the crystal workspace. This schema/user has been granted select access on the various tables it needs to access in other tables via a role, "crystal_role" (this is pre-existing and gets granted to anyone who needs to log in via crystal).
So, if I log into sqlplus as crystal_apex, I can happily run queries against the tables this user has access to via the role, however, access via the SQL Commands tool, any sql run against tables not in the crystal_apex schema fails. Even if I add another schema to the workspace, I can only query against that schema by changing the "schema" dropdown in the SQL Commands tool. If I do switch to using the other schema, the workspace now has full access to that schema, something I do not want, the crystal users have a very restricted level of access.
Is it possible to query/create reports against schemas other than the one apex is connected as? If not, how can you do any cross schema queries (something very common in our database). I'm sure I have done this before in our other workspace, however I cannot recall how I set it up.
It seems if I grant the rights directly to the schema (apex_crystal) rather than via a Role, then the permissions work fine, however only the schemas explicitly granted in apex show up in the query builder/object browser. Is there any way around this, or is this different in newer versions of apex?
Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Since this is a somewhat related topic I am cross posting from another thread.
I have successfully made a policy using dbms_fga, however am having trouble viewing the audit view based on dba_fga_audit_trail. I had the dba create a view based on the dba_fga_audit_trail limited to my schema--call it 'my_audit_view'. So she granted all on 'my_audit_view' to 'my_schema'. She also did same grants to my userid in Apex. I still cannot see the view in the Workspace -- 'table or view does not exist'. What does she need to do to make this audit view available to an apex user in this workspace? Does the grant actually have to be done to apex_public_user (hope not)?? It is interesting that I was able to create the policy from the Apex workspace SQL Worksheet:
    begin
    dbms_fga.add_policy(
    object_schema => 'my_schema',
    object_name => 'my_table',
    policy_name => 'my_table_audit',
    audit_condition => null,
    statement_types => 'insert, update,delete');
    end;
And she showed me that the view does exist and shows the inserts, updates I performed subsequent to the execution of the above, but I cannot run the view myself at this point within my Apex workspace -- which has only 1 schema -- 'my_schema'
Secondly, assuming I get beyond this issues of being able to see the view as a developer, if I want to create a report based on 'my_audit_view' in an application that an 'admin' type user can run on a page in an application (assuming the authorization is set up for the page), is there some other security step that has to be done to make audit view available to the application report??
    Thanks,
    Pat

  • SMB2 permissions issues on 10.9.5

Encountering permissions issues still using smb:// to interact with servers. Thought this was supposed to be fixed in the last update. Having this issue on over 20 Mac Pros using 10.9.5 no problems with older snow leopard macs. I've tried using CIFS and so far it seems to be working ok.
    Can Apple please fix this?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Weird SMS Issue (iOS 4.2, iPhone 4)

So I have a weird software issue that's been going on with my new iPhone 4. Every time I get a text message and I "Slide to View" it doesn't take me to the message, rather, it marks the message as read and then takes me the main Messages pane. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's pretty annoying, along with it sometimes opening up the messages app to an unread message without letting me start at the main screen?
I do not want to restore because I will lose all of my previous text messages. Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks!!!

I've had the same problem since updating to iOS 4.2, on Vodafone network (Ireland).
I'm now dropping most calls in the first minute, I live in the city centre with good network coverage, and I have the cover on...
I went to the VF store yesterday, was given a new micro SIM in case that was the problem (it wasn't).
Then rang VF technical support who reckoned it might be a problem with the software not changing quick enough between 3G to 2G network and vice versa to boost signal strength and recommended disabling 3G (this hasn't helped either).
So I'm sorry for not having an answer, have you heard any fixes elsewhere for the problem though?

  • 30EA3- 2.*: Weird performance issues for editing objects

    Hi,
I noticed weird performance issues for editing objects: when right-clicking on them in the navigator tree and selecting Edit, you get the old progress dialog "Connected to database XXX". This stays on screen a lot longer than it ever did (last sequence I edited over 30 seconds!).
Cancelling displays a "Error retrieving schemas" dialog, but then opens the Edit dialog correctly. No further side effects noticed, so I think sqldev is adding useless overhead here.
If confirmed, can this be bugged and/or fixed by production?
    Thanks,
    K.

Yes, I mean in context of other hangs reported. This one is a nasty performance issue, but IMO the others are real show stoppers.
Atomic steps are easy; any* Edit (object) action inside the context menu of the navigator or the Edit button of the object viewer.
I took a lot of dumps (every second or so) and came to these findings:

  • Disk Utilities/Permissions Issues with Leopard

What is wrong with Leopard's permissions? I have had numerous permissions issues, and had to reformat my two disk drives and Archive & Install Leopard on my startup disk after a Tiger to Leopard Upgrade.
Now when I run Disk Utilities and Repair Permissions (which I do routinely), what used to take a minute or two in Tiger now takes a half hour (or longer) in Leopard?
I ran Disk Utilities on my MacPro and it has taken nearly 25 minutes and is still going. My MacBook Pro is estimating the time at 1-minute remaining (where it started), and it has also been going for 25 minutes plus. I would like to go to bed, and don't want to leave my MBP running over night if I don't have to.
This is a major issue and one which Apple needs to address immediately. I trust I am not the only User having this issue, is this the case?

No your not the only one. It's been reported throughout the discussions. Appears that some of the errors reported in disk utility will not effect performance. Still, I expect that something is being observed and worked on as an update..

  • Aufs root - permissions issues

    Hi all,
I migrated several services from a running system to an aufs root system and am unable to start those services due to permission issues.  I had an issue previously where cups was unable to print because my rootfs was squashfs with an aufs overlay and it could not write to cups directory even though the permission looked correct with ls -alR on that directory.
I still have issues with privoxy and openldap (slapd).
I'm wondering what I need to do to make my system run properly with aufs as root.
    Walter

    GWD2008,
I too am having permissions issues with Front Row, iTunes, and iLife it happen just after the update.
