Weird startup trouble - system not properly initializing.

Hi guys, I'd appreciate any help you can give.
The trouble is that the system isn't properly starting up. I haven't changed anything since it last booted properly except for a pacman -Syu system upgrade.
http://imageshack.com/a/img36/4375/0dse.jpg
I tried fixing the "dirty bit" in /dev/sdb1 (my boot partition), but it has since come back. How am I supposed to check systemctl logs if I don't have a working system?? Why, systemd, why?
Anyway, what should I do to diagnose the problem?

There seem to be a number of possibilities. If you search the forums, you can follow up the leads which match the possibilities on your system e.g. it seems to depend on file system, maybe blocksize, various fs settings/tunables, etc.
As a side note, journalctl apparently doesn't work on a live USB under those circumstances.
What error did you get? And did you direct it at the journal? Or did you try to chroot?

  • ITunes reports the following on startup: "iTunes was not properly..."

    All of a sudden whenever I start iTunes it gives me an error message telling me that "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes".
    I've read and did everything that other threads like this have suggested without success:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2256415&tstart=0
    I have uninstalled iTunes and Apple Application Support software, deleted folders, rebooted, re-installed and still get this message.
    Any ideas what else might be going on? I'm running Windows XP Pro (32-bit) on an HP laptop with all the latest Windows and Apple updates.

    Whatatrip,
    First let me state that I have been in your shoes, where you're at, for more than a year with no help from anyone. I followed all the suggestions I could find, as you did, and got nowhere. So I feel your pain, my brother.
    Today, I felt like I heard angels singing and saw the light of heaven (I'm a writer, forgive the embellishments) when I finally - after another three hours spent - got it working.
    I have x64 Win7 now, but I've had this problem for ages, since XP, and this is what I finally did to get rid of it. I don't know whether all of it is necessary, but I do know that it worked.
    1. Remove ALL Apple products - iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Software Updater, Bonjour, EVERYTHING. I used the standard "Remove programs" through windows to do this. Anything that had an Apple, Inc. tag went bye-bye. Note: I also removed everything Apple-related from my hard drive (not including movies, music, etc). This includes the "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" folder. Do a search for anything with iTunes in the folder or filename and toss it. You may not get rid of everything right away, but do it again later (see below) just to be sure.
    2. Followed the instructions here (http://www.gearcdr.com/wiki/index.php?title=DRIVERS:Windows_-_Updating,_removing,_64_bit_versions,_etc#Manual_Removal_.E2.80.9332-bit) to remove all GEAR drivers from my system. I used 64-bit, but you can probably get similar results with any of the steps suggested.
    3. Use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to fix any lingering registry errors/problems. I had to run the registry cleaner SEVEN TIMES in a row to clear out everything. Make sure you run this more than once, until it says "No issues found."
    4. Reboot.
    5. Run CCleaner again. And again, and again, until it says "No issues found." Remove any trace remnants of iTunes on your HDD (misc folders, etc as above).
    6. Download latest standalone install for iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) and GEAR Drivers (http://www.gearcdr.com/support/drivers.php).
    7. Install iTunes (do NOT run when finished). Install Gear Drivers. *IMPORTANT NOTE:* When I ran the install for these drivers, it asked me whether I wanted to modify, repair or remove the drivers. I selected repair, and the install completed.
    8. Reboot.
    9. Run iTunes.
    Lo and behold, it worked. I can burn once more. I sincerely hope this helps you, and if not, know that there are those out there who understand and can commiserate.

  • Startup trouble, won't update and says "operating system not found"

    So when I tried updating to the new thunderbolt update thingy (yes I know, VERY late but I kept forgetting to update it and I didnt have time) it didnt start up because it said "operating system not found" after 30 mins of looking around for tips to reboot they didnt work,
    I troed rebooting and it worked, and I followed the instructions to "download Mac OS X Lion" again. But it wont redownload because this reason:
    "You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed."
    I have tried everything and since I downloaded the thunderbolt REALLY late I dont think anyone else had had this problem.
    Help me please?

    Hi, pimmerik.
    Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    Sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue.  I would go through the steps in the article I have included below as they may help resolve this error.

    All of a sudden, I go to open Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and get this message in a box:
    "DirectX is installed, but could not be initialized.  Please reboot your system and relaunch Organizer."
    Using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Office 2010 Home and Student on a Dell T3500 workstation with 3.20Ghz Xeon Processor, 12 GB Ram and a 2GB EVGA 650ti Boost graphics card.
    The only thing I can think of since the last time I used PSE10 Organizer was the October, 2014 Windows updates were installed.
    Any ideas anyone, Adobe seems fairly silent on this issue, and there is not much info out there on this for a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system.
    Please help.

    All Windows OS updates installed, all Norton Internet Security updated daily.
    Went to Microsoft to try downloading DirectX just in case that was the problem, and they say you already have the newest version.
    Still receive the same message.  I'm at a loss, not sure what to do.

    WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
    possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

    Maybe you need to enable Direct Play under Legacy Components in the Turn Windows Features on or off dialog.
    1. Right click on the windows start Logo on the taskbar, select Control Panel and click on Programs
    2. Under Programs and Features click on Turn Windows Features on or off and then under Legacy Components enable Direct Play

Either the logical System Name 'WD_RFC_METADATA_DEST' has not been properly defined in the System Landscape Directory, or you are not using a MsgServerDestination (AppServerDestinations are not permitted for Metadata connections)
    </h3>
    What action should I take to fix this error? is this a web dynpro side error or basis error?
    Thanks!

    Dear TJ Ronald Amorado
    Please test the JCO destination for the model data and meta data which you are using in the webdynpro model.
    As per the error message you are getting 'WD_RFC_METADATA_DEST' is not defined in the QA.
    Please create it in the QA manually and test it. Refer to document : - [http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/c0c1d495-048e-2b10-babd-924a136f56b5?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/c0c1d495-048e-2b10-babd-924a136f56b5?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true]
    Copy the name of the modeldata and metadata and use the same name in logical destination during model creation in webdynpro.
    Hope it will helps.

    do shell script "chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" with administrator privileges
    If it doesn’t work, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /System/Library/Extensions/ as the path, throw the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext item away, and reinstall iTunes; if you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, get the installer from Apple’s iTunes site instead of the linked article.

    thanks to all.

    I thing I got the problem.
    I have the following configuration:
    One Main Page and external RN that is call as popup in main page
    2 VO, queries by java code, one to capture some information that is used to query the 2 VO that I use to update information by the popup.
    One AM that is map only in the Main Page. (Initially I had the external RN mapped to same AM as the main PG, but I remove it).
    The solution was remove the mapping of the AM from the external region and in the messageimput of the external region set the View instance and view Attribute manually in this fields (http://screencast.com/t/uDTALEedCh do not use the wizard ) as the one instanced am the AM, so the problem it seem that was that defining an AM to the external region create a new instance, causing that it can not see the information that I load manually in the VO by query it them.
    for this case there is not need to use the next code, because the Rows are load with information by the query in the java code, this only will have to be made when inserting a new row .
        public void initM2mVo(){
            //get a handle to the View Object that we wish to initialize
            OAViewObject vo = (OAViewObject)this.getTascTransEqInstM2mVO1();
            if (!vo.isPreparedForExecution()) {
                vo.setMaxFetchSize(0);
                vo.executeQuery();
            //Create a blank Row
            Row row = vo.createRow();
            //Attach that blank row to the VO. Data will be fed into this row, when the user types into the fields
            vo.insertRow(row);
            //Set the status of the blank row to initialized. This tells OA Framework that record is blank and must not be included in DML
            //Operations until    changes are made to its underlying VO [via screen fields]
            row.setNewRowState(Row.STATUS_INITIALIZED);

  • ViewObject may not have been properly initialized

    Hi, sorry I am a newbie... please be patience with me...
    I have a custom page to create rec, I have a CreateAM, CreateDetailVO, and also the CreatePG.
    Tested and I can create a record.
    Now in my CreatePG, I want to make an item to be a poplist.
    So I created a popList.Server.SupplierVO
    (I select View Row Class:SupplierVORowImpl to Generate Java File and Accessors),
    and attached my SupplierVO to the CreateAM.
    Make my field Style to "messageChoice",
    and Picklist View Definition point to my SupplierVO,
    Picklist View Instance = blank,
    Picklist Display/value attribute to SupplierCd.
    When I run the page, it came up fine, the poplist display values and I can select one,
    but when I hit the apply button, it gave me the following error message
    *Developer Mode Error: Stale Data
    Cause:
    The view object CreateAM.SupplierVO1 contained no record. The displayed
    records may have been deleted, or the current record for the view object
    may not have been properly initialized.
    What am I missing? Any advise?
    Thanks in advance!

    hi SWL
    make sure that you intializing VO properly in the processrequest method of you CO
    check against this one

  • Database system was not properly shut down

    Dear Mac community,
    I have just repaired a friends 800 MHz 17" Flat Panel Display iMac... Somehow the hard drive had become badly corrupted and the system was frequently shutting itself down and freezing with kernel panics as a result. I managed to recover my friends data using Data Rescue II and after using Disk Warrior managed to do an Erase & Install of Mac OS X (10.4.4).
    The iMac appears to be fine now except for one worrying thing that I have noticed in the console each time after restarting:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.4 (Build 8G32)
    2006-02-02 16:20:47 +0000
    2006-02-02 16:20:50.962 SystemUIServer[201] lang is:en
    LOG: database system shutdown was interrupted at 2006-02-02 16:19:46 GMT
    LOG: checkpoint record is at 0/87904C
    LOG: redo record is at 0/87904C; undo record is at 0/0; shutdown FALSE
    LOG: next transaction id: 550; next oid: 82855
    LOG: database system was not properly shut down; automatic recovery in progress
    LOG: ReadRecord: record with zero length at 0/87908C
    LOG: redo is not required
    LOG: database system is ready
    Does anyone have an idea what this might be and how I can resolve the issue??
    The systems performance doesn't appear to be affected in anyway however it looks and sounds ominous.
    One other small thing I have noticed is that the iMac won't automatically put itself into sleep mode despite it being set to in the Energy Saver System Preferences. There are no external hardware devices attached such as a printer, firewire device, USB hub etc. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM and this appears to have had no effect.
    Any advice / suggestions greatly appreciated!!
    Many thanks,
    Justin

    Marking as answered as I managed to resolve the issue

  • System.InvalidOperationException: ExecuteNonQuery: Connection Property Has Not Been Initialized

    Why is my connection not being initialized?  It seems to me in my syntax I set it up as it should be.  How can I get around this so the connection will be initialized?  I am needing to have a re-usable function as the database parameter needs
    to be passed into the connection string.
    public static void DoSomething_Click()
    string database = "1234";
    OleDbConneciton olc = new OleDbConnection(AccessConnection(database));
    olc.Open();
    try
    OleDbCommand command = new OleDbCommand();
    command.CommandText = ATS;
    command.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
    command.ExecuteNonuery();
    command.Dispose();
    catch (Exception wtf) { Messagebox.show(wtf.ToString()); }
    private static string AccessConnection(string database)
    return string.Format("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source = C:\\Test\\{0}.mdb", database);

    You've set up a connection, and a command, but you didn't associate the two. The command you have set up needs to know what connection to use. You haven't set that up.
    command.Connection = olc;
