Well known scam called my home phone from a Skype ...

Hi,
Recently I have been contacted 2 or 3 times a day at my home phone number from 'Computer Maintenance Department' or 'Windows Department', claiming my computer was sending them error messages. The latest phonecall came from Skype number 001 956 460 5604.
This is a well known scam where the perpetrators aim to convince their victims that their computer has a virus and then persuade them to allow remote access in order to 'fix' the problem.
As this came from a Skype number, how do I go about reporting this?

Let me add to my earlier response.   DO not even attempt to discuss this matter with comcast or their techs. They simply are unaware of the problem and can do nothing to fix it. Call Neustar at the number I gave you in ealrier post..  Tell them the problem and either have them delete your cellphone number from their data base or set the caller id to show city, state and your number.  Deletion is probably better. Tech at Neustar did this told it would take effect in two hours and the problem was gone in 5 minutes. I am sick and tired of disconnects, talking to techs at comcast who barely can speak english, mumble, one told me today to go to the website and disable call blocking from my cell then call  home and then reenable it after making the call.  LMAO!   Yeah, while driving down the road. This afternoon I got a call from a  rather arrogant tech who didn;t want to hear the problem, didn;t undertand the problem and tried to blame the problem on my cell service.  No problem when I call anyone outside of Comcast and it was corected once before .   So the problem is with your cell phone number listing at Neustar.  Since Comcast uses Neustar for their caller id numbers they should be be able to delete or correct entires but apparently cannot.   Good Luck, my days with comcast are limited.

whenever I call my home phone, I hear a lot of snap crackle pop sounds with 3G active. If I turn off 3G, this stops. How do I fix this?

there is no fix. It's a GSM 3G thing. I used to be able to go to the movies and put my phone next to a movie theatre speaker and it do the same thing....
i just figured the newest 3G technologies did away with it

  • Why do you insist in calling my home phone EVERY hour to complete a survey!

I have been interrupted on no less than 3 conference calls while working from home today. I even called and politely asked that I stop receiving them but received ANOTHER interruption. I am happy to complete a survey but not during my work day and there is ABSOLUTELY no need to call every hour!!!! Maybe once per day!

Have no fear, Verizon is here. I would love to go over the account with you to figure out what happened? Was this for Verizon Wireless services or for your home services? I did request to follow you. Can you please accept that request and request to follow me back. • Caller id says MY OWN HOME PHONE NUMBER is calling itself!?!?

Today I apparently got a call from myself, or a ghost!  The phone rings, I look at the caller id, and it says that it is my HOME PHONE NUMBER calling my home phone (itself)!!  I answer, and no one is there.  This has happened before, and I just want to make sure no one is hacking my phone number somehow.  Anybody know what this means??

  • I think I got a scam call...

So I got what I believed was a scam call from +1 (661) 748-0240. He said some stuff about him detecting security issues with me and my IP address. I ask how he would know that, and he said it was through the servers connected to my PC. I'd like to think I'm fairly tech-literate so I could tell it was a bit of crap. Looking it up, I see it's a default skype number and that it's used for scamming quite a bit. So that helped my suspision. But here's the thing. This was a bit different. He knew and recited my name to me, and even said he was a third-party contracted by Dell(I own an Alienware laptop from late 2013). That was a bit scary as I have no idea how a scammer would have that info. But I'm pretty sure a REAL third-party network security company would have a REAL number.  So I'm fairly sure it was just a scammer. but I have no idea how he would have that info. Has anyone else had this instance where the guy knew your name and somehow knew your PC brand?

Hi, Maora34, and welcome to the Community,
    You are correct: this number: 001 661 748 0240
is a well-known generic caller ID assigned to outgoing Skype calls by the land line telephone companies when Skype caller ID is missing, corrupted, or simply not programmed or added.
I would be extremely wary of such calls, and suspect that perhaps the place you purchased your computer from may have been compromised.  Call that vendor directly to ask for more information.  As a proactive measure, change your on-line account passwords and run your preferred anti-virus/malware/spyware software suite using today's virus signature files.
Dell, and the vendor from which you purchased your PC, needs to be made aware of this incident.
    Regards,
    Elaine

  • The FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter for Sky...

    Hi all,
I am seriously considering dropping my landline since I mostly if not only uses my iPhone as my primary device for calls. The problem I have is an alarm system is connected to my land line and requires a way to call the alarm centre in case of an emergency.
I talk to my alarm service provider for an alternative. They already have the cellular option, but it adds $12/m which is not a big saving... They are working on finding an IP/Internet solution, but it will be also a $4/m.
I was wondering if I could use the FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter for Skype as a solution. From a computer I can call any 1-800 numbers for free, and I really suspect that the alarm centre is a toll free number too. So in theory it could work.
Can anyone share their experience with the device and suggest if my solution can work or not?
    Thanks

I use that adapter in my house, it works just as a normal landline would.  There is a slightly longer predial delay when initiating a call (approx 3 second Skype dialing noise), beyond that no real difference.  If the box doesn't lock up, or your Internet doesn't go down it should be rather reliable as a replacement.  Those are worst-case scenarios and I generally don't find myself having to do anything to maintain it.  In any case I have it connected to a power surge strip like I do the rest of my equipment.  Should I need to reset it, I just toggle the switch.

  • Home phone blocks my cell phone?!?

For some time when I call my home phone number on my cell phone, my home phone blocks me. It doesn't do it with any other phone. Could there be something on my cell phone that blocks me from calling that number?

What do you hear when you call?? Any message or error code??

  • Can i use my ipad2/iphone or touch to interface with a home phone landline?

My house phone has broken and i was wondering if there is a docking device that can be interfaced with one of my apple products to make it utilise my landline.

If you have an iPad, you're more than welcome to get a VoIP client (Google Voice, anyone?) which will let you make calls...and as we all know, iPhones can make calls.
Home phones are getting cheaper and cheaper, so I don't see why you couldn't just fix the home phone for ~$20.
Now, if you wanted to ditch your landline and make your iPhone act like a landline, I'd check this dock out: http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/29/desk-phone-dock-review/

Hello and welcome to the Skype Community!
The reason you can't make calls is because you are calling from the UAE which blocks all outbound VoIP traffic including Skype to protect the state monopoly. Accessing the internet using a VPN to avoid the block may assist.

I recommend that you always run the latest Skype version: Windows & Mac

  • Transfering calls with a phone behind a CUBE.

    Hello,
    My setup is as follows.
I have two softswitches, one behind my CUBE (from now on I call it "M") and another one outside the CUBE (from now on I call it "A").
I can call from A to M and viceversa.
If a phone from A orginates a call to M, that phone from M can transfer that call to another phone from M..but I am not able to transfer that call to a phone from A (that is, a connection between two phones from A)
Softswitch M is a softswitch we are currently testing, and using a CUBE is the only way we can hook it to the network without making lots of changes in the routing tables.
I was wondering if the transfer I am not being able to complete, can be accomplished.
I will be happy to provide you with any info you require to help me with my problem.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Softswitch A is an Asterisk 1.8, so it does.
This is the initial invite, the one that phone registered in A sends to CUBE.

  • WARNING SCAM Phone Calls purporting to be from BT ...

At 08:55 today I received a phone call from 0800 169 1608. An Automated message was left purporting to be from BT and prompting me to press numbers on my keypad I.e. if I was the Account holder press 1 etc. As I was concerned it could be something important, I tried to recall the number but connected to another automated message again purporting to be from BT and that if required, they would ring back. After Googling the phone number I became suspicious and contacted BT directly to see if they had any knowledge about calling me. They informed me that it was not BT, it was a SCAM call and to email them at [email protected] with the details. According some entries on Google this scammier is trying to obtain Account details and God knows whatever else ! This afternoon I received a call back from the Real BT reassuring me that it was definately not them calling earlier and that they would be carrying out an investigation and would recontact me again in a few days time.

So before you or anyone you know falls victim to the scheme, bear these tips in mind:
•Be suspicious of unexpected phone calls asking for personal or financial information, regardless of who they claim to represent.
•Be warned that banks will never ask you for your PIN or online information over the phone.
•Know that your bank will never ask you to withdraw money to hand over or transfer to another account.
•Your bank will never send anyone to your home to collect cash, a payment card or a cheque book.
•If you’re worried that the call may be real, hang up and call your bank through a different phone line.
•If you think the call is a scam, take note of the caller’s phone number and report it to Callercenter.com. Spread the word and warn others.

  • Why won't my Razr Maxx ring when called from my home phone or the other cell phone (I-phone) on my Verizon account?

Why won't my Razr Maxx ring when called from my home phone or the other cell phone (I-phone) on my Verizon account?

    Hi Ruth:
Thanks for reaching out to me about this issue.
This has been happening since I got the phone a couple of years ago.
I did not realize that my home land line and my wife's cell phone
always go straight to voice mail until my wife pointed it out to me
several months ago.  Is there a setting I can adjust?
Yes, I can make calls to our home land line and to her cell phone
without being diverted to voice mail.
Any advice you might have would be most welcome.
    Thanks.

  • How do you prevent your phone from locking during voice calls?  Mute/unmute features?  Are there any?  Please help?

Here is the problem - I am often on conference calls.  My company, for security reasons requires that I use the lock phone feature.  However, I will be on a call, I have muted myself, then the phone locks.  I then have to key in my password, and unmute my phone.  This prevents me from "jumping in" the conversation appropriately.  I either sound like I'm not paying attention or worse, I'm talking over someone else and seem rude.  I have tried to search for any of the following features on the iphone 5 c.
Prevent phone from locking during phone calls
Set a button on the phone as mute/unmute
Find a headset that has a mute/unmute feature
I am not the only one at my company struggling with this so I'm thinking others might be too and that there is a solution!
    Please help!
    Thank you.

Sounds like you need to upgrade to the iPhone 5s
    The 5s has Touch ID
You can unlock your phone with your finger instead of typing in a key code
No swiping to unlock either, just touch the home button
You can enrol multiple fingers as well
Here is a video of it in action
    http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/videos/#video-touch
Or wait and see what iPhone 6 has to offer
That being said, as desiel vdub posted if the phone is up to your face, the proximity sensor should turn the screen off
And when you lower the phone turn it back on again
Not sure about the phone locking when your on a call doesn't sound right
