The so called Viruses in the news lately are not Virusues anyway. They are bits of malicious code. They are files that are disguised as something else. such as a 'jpg' or a quicktime movie. The look real but when the open the start a shell script.
I would recommend you install a utility called paranoid androide from unsanity.

There are no known viruses for OS X.  If you have to worry about a website putting some malware on your computer, then you should not visit it any longer.  Find a legitimate site.

  • What are you supposed to do instead of Adobe flash when you hit a site that requires it while using iphone?

New to iphone and first time using the web I get a message that I can't view a page because Apple blocks Adobe Flash. There seems to be some big story behind this, but what are you supposed to do to view those sites? Sorry if there is an obvious answer somewhere but I'm muddling my way through all of this!
    Thanks,

Nothing unless they have an HTML only option you can click on the bottom of the page. However a page that requires flash only is most likely that of a company or business with heavy marketing content. Most websites with useful content either don't base their entire homepage on flash or have a mobile version for smartphones. So if you're visiting company or movie websites just do it on your computer. Apple and now adobe considers that the battery hit for flash animations is not worth it for phones. Most flash content is pure advertising rubbish anyway. I always install Adblock on all my browsers and barely see any flash except for videos and websites where the flash is not advertising.

  • I have just rented a film through my Apple TV (2) which I cannot play, The screen says "HDCP is not supported by your HDMI connection". What am I supposed to do about this?

I have just rented a film through my Apple TV (2) which I cannot play. The screen says "HDCP is not supported by your HDMI connection." What am I supposed to do about this? Thanks in anticipation.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
HDCP is copy protection built into iTunes video content, the Apple TV requires all devices to be HDCP compatible before it will send HDCP content to them. In simplistic terms the Apple TV asks the TV if the signal it will send can be recorded, if it gets the right answer it will send the signal, if it doesn't receive a reply it won't.
Your problem may be one of unsupported equipment or may simply be an error. You could start by checking if your TV is HDCP compliant. If it is the problem might be cabling or another device (such as a receiver) between the Apple TV and TV, it may also just be a glitch which might be resolved by a simple restart.

  • So what are you going to do about it?

What are you going to do about these iPad2 shipping problems, Verizon? Your plastered dates of "3-4 weeks" has passed and we are now in week 5+ with nothing to show for. How is this problem going to be rectified? I'm tired of talking to phone reps that have no information because they can't see store systems, and I'm tired of retail stores that hide the screen and blurt off "it's in the warehouse system, but that's all the information we have right now." **bleep**!? You guys got my money over a month ago. Apple has been back to 2-3 week delivery estimate for at least a week now. I would love an answer. Maybe this board will be more successful than actually talking to you guys in person or over the phone. I would love a response, even if it's through private message or email. I've tried your other routes.

On yesterday, I was extremely fed up with waiting as I just hit 4 weeks (ordered March 22nd), I told my CSR (in an email) to cancel my stinking order, demanded my money back, called the 800 number three or four times to gripe and complain and I FINALLY GOT SOMEBODY ON THE PHONE that cared enough to actually do something about it!  I'm sure all you have experienced the same thing where the rep on the 800 number is just briefly glancing at the order and then giving the company line.
I pressed yesterday and told the rep I needed someone that would escalate this and give me answers because there was certainly a Black 32 GB/3G with my name on it and that someone just had to push the right d**m button to match it up with me. Well she placed me on hold for 5 or 6 minutes maybe even longer but it was worth the wait.  She told me that she did not have access to see anything with my order but that she got a floor supervisor because she too was concerned that my wait had been too long (going on 5 weeks on this Tuesday).  The Supervisor did have the magic access and was able to determine that my shipping date is Monday, April 25th and that I'll have it on two days Fedex delivery (April 27th)!!  I felt relieved to hear this and so was the CSR and she told me how excited she was to be able to provide me relevant information!  On Monday, I should finally have a tracking number and hopefully my package will arrive as promised.
I will gladly return to this forum on Monday evening with an update but I must stress to each of you who were like me languishing on 4 to 5 weeks to make the same call to 877-807-4372 (regional Telesales) number.  Give them your location code and they can tell you which region you ordered from if you ordered by phone.  I live in Texas and my call was handled by the South region for Telesales and their number is 800-256-4646.  Please don't waste your time calling the general Customer Service number (800-922-0204)....you need Telesales and you specifically need your regional team that you ordered from.  Press the CSR to check with a supervisor to gain detail shipping information because it is their beyond the grasp of the CSR!!!

  • The taboo question... what are people charging?

I've tried to quietly ask a few pricing questions around, but mostly just get the response "why don't you ask in the forums"?  So here goes...  I am starting to build up a small media agency and we have purchased the Pro DPS Account.  I'm wondering:
    1) If other DPS Pro (or Enterprise) users are simply charging their clients per app/issue, or also including a fixed monthly fee on top to cover the download fees and platform fee?
    2) What $$ range people are charging clients to product an app, or each issue?  I know this number can vary wildly depending on content, client size, market, etc, etc, etc... but if anyone was willing to share basic details I would greatly appreciate it!  Perhaps just say something like: we are on the West Coast, and serve a billion dollar a year company, and charge them $X for each issue, excluding 3D and video creation costs for the issue.  Please don't feel like you have to identify yourselves or your clients... I really wouldn't expect that!
Like I said, I'm just taking a shot in the dark asking questions like this, but thought... what the heck, why not?!
    Thanks!

Thanks Bob... I know its a pretty difficult question when taking into account project scope, client, and market location.  I guess at this point I'm almost more interested in finding out how people are dealing with the Pro account cost (which we have already), the $0.30/folio download fee, or even if you add on SiteCatalyst (another $15K+/yr).  Are smaller agencies building all those costs directly into what they charge per app (or per folio)?  Or are they charging per app/folio, and then also tacking on a monthly surcharge per app/folio?  I'm trying to set up a business model for this that doesn't go against what everyone else might be doing!

  • What are we supposed to do when the magic mouse stops working?

Everything was fine last night, until my mouse again lost it's connection. The light was blinking fine, but no connection, I changed batteries (even tho the ones inside showed nearly a full charge), still wouldn't work. I realized, ok, now what? Shouldn't Apple include a corded mouse, for back-up, should the bluetooth one screw up, die, or for whatever reason, not work any longer?
Again, I felt totally frustrated, couldn't even look up the local Apple Store number, (too late to call tech help), or do anything! *** is someone supposed to do? I thought I may have an old, wired mouse somewhere, as I had just moved. Well, somehow I found it, plugged it in, but it didn't work either (I think that tiny, all-too-fragile wire had frayed a bit), so I was really frustrated & helpless feeling. Remembered I had bought the trackpad, so I pulled that out. Well, talk about confusion, the directions talked about first downloading the software, running software update, etc, before trying to connect it!
Since I had no way to do that (I know there's some way to navigate the monitor window, using only the keyboard, but while I tried what I could, I couldn't do anything but go up and down or side to side, no way to access the toolbar, but just now realized, I probably could've accessed the dock, & done something,...
But I turned on the pad & prayed, at first it didn't do anything, but then finally connected.
Once that happened, I turned on the mouse again, and now it worked. So I tried to turn the pad off, but it didn't want to turn off, it kept showing up on the screen.....eventually it turned off, and now things are back to normal.
But my question is what does Apple expect us to do, should the mouse screw up? What can be used if it goes down? They seem to have problems for most people, at times, & it seems a bit like not having a parachute...

    Saxman,
I think their parachute effort was System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced... > "Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup when no input device is present". In your case the keyboard was there so it probably didn't open. Now that you have a mouse and trackpad, you should have at least one of them connect, so that's a bit of insurance.
I would also add those devices to bluetooth favorites located under the gear icon below the list. Select "show more information" if you don't see the favorites selection.

  • My Photoshop CS (£500 at the time) will not work with Windows 7, what am I supposed to do about it?

I have just spent at least two hours messing about trying to activate my Photoshop CS (using a new hard disk) until finally being told (via a long useless telephone call and  two long chat sessions) why I can't activate it, and also that it cannot be replaced by CS2 because that is only for Windows XP which of course is to be faded out next year! It seems to me unreasonable that such a large expenditure (£500 at the time) should be casually dismissed as CS being 'not being compatible with...'  and it being a very  'old' program. It was working well for me. Why am I supposed to have to pay for another version? Is this even legal? At the very least there should be some special offer for people in my position.
    Photoshop justify this?

Dear Old Bob..I enjoyed that! I and thanks so much ...I would have done it if I could have done it but I was blocked by Photoshop at every stage! Thankfully my own IT Guru and friend came to the rescue remotely last night and has down-loaded it. But it took him quite a bit of time.
As XP is  faded out, there will be an awful lot of people like me complaining.
But truth is my problems are only at a start! About 30 prints (some not yet on my 'blog' (juliamatcham.wordpress.com) all have varying settings which I have noted. Everything depends on these settings.
All are Apple RGB (although my computer is a PC) and they were all set for my printer Epson Photo 1800. Also they were set at varying settings...Standard or Vivid 1.5, 2.5 whatever suited the design.
These settings appear not to exist on CS2 which is a nightmare for me as each print was carefully proofed with a great deal patience and at some expense as in the end one has to use expensive paper even for proofing.
If you have any hints for how to translate these old settings...I would kiss your feet!
Just looking through how things work, I can't understand why I can't change my first printing option to landscape ...everything esle so far seems comprehensible.
    I do hate change!
Meanwhile, thanks so much to Curt, Noel, Nahraka and Old Bob for cheering me on. I am obviously going to be back asking more questions about CS2!

  • What Are The Pro And Cons About The Air

Can you please answer me because i want to get the best for my money
The Laptop in question is the 13'' thanks!
    PLEASE ANSWER xx

Look there is No Best. Simple fact is, throughout your life, you will spend your money on things and they will either work or not. And you can be assured that at some point whatever you buy and whatever amount of money you spend on it, a lot or a little, eventually it will fail. Just like all people die, they fail eventually.
So stop worrying about it, go down to a store, Look over what they offer, take notes, go home and search the internet for problems, then go back and buy what seems to fit you the best.
Or be like me. I see something I like, I look at the price, if I can afford it I Buy IT.

  • Seriously, What am I supposed to feel about this?.

I didn't know what I should think about and I could not put up with this anymore.
Roughly a month ago, I had to take my laptop to the tech support again since I had found out a new issue related to a wierd line on the LCD screen.
As the laptop had already been sent four times and there seemed to be no way to fix it once and for all, the tech support called me to inform that the computer would be replaced by another one exactly with the same specs.
Recently, I have been sent the new laptop, but unfortunately I figured out the computer does not have the same specs like the other one since it was built with an obsolete motherboard/VGA card (MB 90002353 N14M was replaced by the MB 90000177 N13M-GE, I mean the VGA NVidia 710m was replaced by a worse NVidia 610m).
I felt hard done-by because I never expected this kind of procedure. Honestly, I'm disappointed in you.
However, thanks to the reseller I'm no longer a Lenovo user. They kind of felt sorry for everything I'd been going through, so they finally agreed to let me change the laptop for another brand.
I only hope you won't treat your costumers in the same way I was treated because of I'm sure I'll never and ever buy to this brand again. So, farewell Lenovo.

I'm looking forward to hearing you get the money back as soon as possible and do away with this brand forever. By the way the info about both laptop's specs are as follows:
    Laptop acquired/replaced:
Serial S/N: [Moderator Edited to protect member's personal information.]
VGA graphic on the MB: N14M (Nvidia 710M 1GB RAM)

  • (MacBook / No FireWire) What are people here going to do down the line ?

I hope not to turn this into a rant about the new MacBooks. Rather I just wanted the musicians side of things...
I know that there is lots of talk in the MacBook forums about the new MacBook's lack of FireWire but as a fellow musician I was hoping to get other musician's (Logic Pro 8 users) perspective on the situation.
I've been using my iMac for about 5 years and I was planning to purchase my 1st MacBook in January and retire the iMac to other non-music chores.
Why? .....my wife bought herself an iMac about a year ago (Nov 2007) and I've fallen in love with her computer. I have not loaded Logic 8 on her machine but I have used GarageBand on it and it works great so I would assume I would get good performance on it with Logic 8.
But, now that the new MacBooks don't have FireWire and my connections (audio, hard disks, video cameras etc.) to my iMac via FireWire, I've decided not to buy a new MacBook.
    options
    1. I still like doing music on my iMac. Maybe I'll just keep it as my music computer
    2. Ask my wife to trade? (not going to happen)
    3. Buy a MacBook Pro? Thats a lot of extra money that if I had I would rather spend on something that would make my music really "sound" better (better mic, better Guitar, better mic preamp etc). After all, those things will last forever, a computer has a limited lifespan.
    4. Switch to a USB interface and get the new MacBook? I have a FireBox interface now that I really like although I have been using a external mic preamp that made my audio sound quite a bit better.
What would you all do? Or better, what WILL you do when it comes time for you to need a new notebook computer with FireWire.
    ideas?

This is a good thread with information that may be useful to you:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1802741
With all due respect to Marceldada, I would not recommend buying one of those white macbooks. Although they price is right, you want to get the best and fastest machine you possibly can, or you are going to have performance issues with Logic and grow out of the machine sooner. The newest model 'unibody' 2.1ghz Macbook actually gets faster benchmarks than the 2.4ghz previous generation Macbook (yes, I typed that in right, the 2.1 is FASTER than the previous gen 2.4), so that white previous generation 2.1 Macbook they're still selling on the MB page is going to be significantly slower than any other Mac laptop you can get now.
I'm not totally convinced that USB is terrible for Audio interfaces - there seem to be some nice ones out there if you just want something with a couple of ins and outs. Get a 7200 speed internal HD, and you can record several tracks of audio onto that with no problems.
If you're wanting to do really heavy Logic work and lots of multi track recording, you should spring for the MBP anyway. The Macbook Pro's are amazing machines, and that 2 inches more on the screen in my opinion is worth its weight in gold. Also keep in mind that you will recoup some of the added expense that you put into a newer and better spec'd machine when you resell it. Even if you bought one of the black or white Macbooks brand new now, the silver one will still hold its value better because it is newer technology. And that certainly holds true for the MBP's too. The more you spend now, the more it will be worth when you sell.
If you do want firewire and definitely don't want a MBP, I would look at the refurbished and clearance machines on Apple's website, or check out some Apple retail stores who may still have some of the older black and white Macbooks they're trying to get rid of.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTMzNTY
I think getting a refurbished or clearance model 2.4 black or white Macbook (or a refurbed previous generation Macbook Pro, which you can get for cheaper than the current silver Macbook) is a much better deal than the low end whitebook they're still selling new. If there is a university near you, check out their bookstore. I was just in a university bookstore two days ago, and the were selling the 2.4ghz blackbook for $999, and the 2.4 whitebook for $949. That's cheap, and a pretty fast machine!
    Good Luck!

  • 15.4" WXGA TFT with LED Backlight - What are people's impressions?

I've had my T500 with WXGA TFT LED Backlighting for about a week and I have to say I am very unimpressed.
The Thinkpad works fine but the screen is terrible. Everything on the screen is washed out and videos are pixelated.
I wish i'd never chosen it. I'm considering sending it back to get the non backlit LCD.
What experiences have other users had with it? And for that matter with the standard WXGA?
    Cheers
    Lyndon

The 15% restocking fee is Lenovo policy, unless you can negotiate it out with them before you buy.  I heard they drop it if you return it and buying something more expensive....
My T500 has the LED panel.  Apparently, it is a very recent addition to the options.  It is certainly very bright, but it is not appear evenly lit.  I blame that on the odd way the panel handles off axis performance, because I can't imagine an LED screen being anything but uniform.
I've since complaining run my Eye-One screen calibrator on it and totally fixed the incredible blue shift in the display (though I knew that could be fixed).  I am thinking I can limp by with this laptop while I look for the 'one' that has a decent screen.  Then this puppy will be up on eBay.  (I wish I hadn't bought upgraded the video card, but maybe some gamer will want that feature)
I started thinking about why I want to take the $175 hit on price and start the search all over again.  I'll just use that money to soften the loss of selling it on eBay someday.

  • What are we supposed to do? I can't use iTunes anymore!!!

I updated to the itunes 7.7 version the other day, and didn't try to access it until today. I have spent the past 10 hours trying to get it to work. I keep getting the message: "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing"I've installed and uninstalled several times. Tried the same with quicktime. I've looked at Microsoft to see if the problem was there, repaired my system and from looking around, it seems i'm not alone.I can't find a solution anywhere, but find it hard to believe that Apple would just leave a flawed program out there, with people not able to use it anymore. Does anyone have a specific answer?

I didn't say install it as new - I said download the file as new.  Big difference.
Download iTunes - new (do not use any previously downloaded version.)
    Run the install programme
When you start the install procedure, do you see an option to Repair iTunes? - If you do, use it.
Repairing iTunes (a procedure I have used in the past) will attempt to repair iTunes - not install it as new. Have you tried this option? I assume ('cos I'm not a programmer) that the repair procedure will examine the itunes.msi file, realise it's broken and fix it, or at least attempt to fix it. That's certainly what I understand repair to mean.
Only once you have tried this and used the repair option if it's presented to you, can you rule out the repair option.

  • What are people doing with 60p footage

I see this question asked a lot here and in the iMovie forum.  For the life of me I can not imagine what people are doing with it.  When I watch 60p footage it looks "fake" to me.  Plus if you are using 1080p60 the only thing you can watch it on is on a computer or directly off your camera or disk. Meaning Bluray does not support it and you can not broadcast it, so why bother?  Slow motion effects?
    Just curious.

Nobody's putting 60p on the web the file sizes get too large and there is no point in the frame rate with the screen refresh of a computer There really isn't much point of 60p unless you using it to reconform for slomo.
