I want to upgrade my internal drive but I don't know how to do that. I have already purchased a WD 1TB internal hard drive. However, I contacted apple support and they said if I try to upgrade the hdd myself, then the warranty of the macbook would be void. I am from India . I currently have a Macbook Pro mid 2012,13 inch.
Also, do i need to download a setup of Yosemite before changing the hdd?

I just bought a Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina) 15 inch from a friend. I think it is running Mountain Lion (has not been upgraded to Mavericks yet), and has iLife on it. It came with the stock 500 gb 5400 rpm internal hard drive. At home, I only have the Snow Leopard OS installation Cds and a copy of iLife 2011 installation Cds. I am going to buy 16 gb of RAM from Other World Computing to install.
I want to replace the hard drive with a 1 tb hard drive, preferably something that is $100 or less.
I talked to Other World Computing (OWC) and looked at the Data Doubler Option to replace the optical drive with a Solid State drive, but decided that for now I want to keep the optical drive inside the computer for portability issues.
I know that Solid State drives are better, but they are still too small, and I want the ease and portability of a 1 tb size INSIDE my computer.
Initially I was going to order this from Other World Computing: 1.0TB 2.5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 9.5mm Notebook Drive 32MB Cache. *'New' Factory Replacement with 2+ Year HGST Warranty*    As of April 4, 2014 it's on sale for $79
But then I started reading some of the discussions online and thought maybe I should get a hybrid solid state drive?
I saw on Amazon the Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014 It's on sale for $94.
But according to some reviews, this Seagate has a platter that is only 5400rpm, unlike the previous Seagate Momentum that has a platter speed of 7200rpm.
How reliable are the Seagate, versus a Toshiba or Western Digital or Hitachi or something else?
Here are my questions about replacing the hard drive:
1. Is a hybrid solid state drive going to need some kind of special formatting after I put it into the macbook so that I can put the operating system on it?
2. Is a "normal" platter hard drive more reliable than a hybrid solid state drive?
3. Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
4. Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer. Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
5. If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
6. If I want to do the "Data Doubler" option in the future and add a normal Solid State drive into my computer, will it have trouble interacting with the 1 tb hybrid solid state drive?
I would love to get some recommendations about the smartest option to upgrade my hard drive with something that will be fast (I edit lots of photos) and large (1 tb) that isn't going to cost too much. I don't know much about the different brands or options (and there are so many listed in tons of online reviews), that I got really overwhelmed and confused by the info out there.
I would really appreciate any help and advice. I've never switched out a hard drive before.

The boot drive, regardless of what it is, needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This is standard with OS X.

There are arguments pro and con. Bottom line, SSD's and hybrid drives are still quite expensive per GB than standard hard drives. If you have the bucks and are a speed demon, go ahead.   I have better use for my money.   Standard hard drives are mechanical and may wear out over time. But even though SSDs are not mechancial, they can still go bad and ultimately they even have a limit to their write capacity. The jury is still out on this debate.
3. Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
No
4. Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer. Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
You can physically put the hard drive in but probably not install Snow Leopard on this MBP.
The mid-2012 MacBookPro9,1 models came with Lion 10.7.3 (11D2097) preinstalled.   It is very unlikely you would be able to install Snow Leopard on it. Historically you cannot install a version of OS X that is earlier than the version that came with your Mac (even if you replace the hard drive).
5. If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
Not via Snow Leopard on this MBP. See my response to #4.

No. They are completely independent of each other; they are just independent storage units (drives) and their RAM does not interact.

Upgrade internal hard drive on MacBook Pro (1,1)

Can I upgrade my 15" MacBook Pro (1,1)2.16ghz Intel Core Duo to the 200GB(7200rpm) or 250 (5400rpm) internal hard drive? Is there a significant difference in the speed between the two. Does Apple sell them? Or are they third party?

Those are same as use by Apple in the non-retina macbook Pro, Ive got piles of them, only a Hitachi is better.
Toshiba HD are a hair noisy even by Toshiba own admission, but no big deal.
I would NEVER buy from OWC merely for the reasons that their prices are miserable.

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive. But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

It's about time for me to max out the ram and buy another internal hard drive for my 17 inch Macbook Pro. I use photoshop and final cut pro X on a regular basis and my Macbook is starting to slow down and is low on memory. These were the two recommendations that I got from a live chat agent on OWC. Good choices, though a true SSD would be faster overall, though more expensive. That same drive is a lot cheaper on Amazon though.

You can use SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner to accomplish that.
You'd need an external disk or mount your old internal in an enclosure.

Thank you in advanced for all of the support. This is my first post to the communities. I just bought a 2.9 GHz core 17 processor MacBook pro mid 2012 13" with 8 GB of RAM and I am in the process of upgrading it. When I bought the MacBook pro originally, I was told that I would never mac out the performance because I do not do a lot of photo/video editing. This is true, but I am an academic researcher and tend to multitask often, having 20+ safari tabs open, SPSS (a statistical program), full screen mail app, full screen calendar app, and preview, iTunes open all at the same time. I often get slow performance and error messages that state low memory. This is why I am interested in upgrading the laptop. I am getting ready to go to medical school and I want to have a powerful laptop. I also want to future proof because I plan on having a dual boot system to mac OS and windows OS.
Because I know I will be maxing out the performance of the computer, I want to take full advantage of upgrades, especially now because the cost of the components is reasonable at the moment. The following are the proposed upgrades:
1. Upgrade my current 8-GB ram (2x4-GB) with 16-GB ram (2x8-GB). I plan on using crucial RAM.

I thought I'd get something bigger for storage. From what I have read I think its best not to partition the drive for backup and storage.

How to undo the file sharing in your internal hard drive in Macbook?

I thought the way to lock and unlock a file would also be the same procedure when locking the internal hard drive?
Basically what happened is that I have an icon on my desktop (top-right corner) where I can access my applications, home, etc.
I thought I could privitize my whole entire system if I just change the file sharing into "Read Only (Drop Box)" status.
So I right-click on the icon, then clicked "Get Info," then clicked the lock button then it asked me for my password to be able to make changes.
My fault was I made the "Home" and "Admin" to "Read Only (Drop Box) status and "Other Users" to "No Access" file sharing.
Now in result I cannot click on anything. All the applications are lock. Even the System Preferences.
Another problem I came across is that I tried to turn my MacBook on...and it would just stay on the white screen with the apple logo and it would just load for ever.
So overall, my whole entire mac system is locked, can't open anything and I cannot turn on my Mac.
I tried calling the Apple call support services. But my warranty has expired. I could pay for it, but I really do want to save.
I hope someone can tell me a good solution. Next time I'll make sure not to do experiments anymore and stick to what I know.

You need to do it as soon as you turn the computer back on. If you have a firmware password set on the computer, you'll need to know it and have a Mac OS X install DVD; if you don't have either and a firmware password is set, contact Apple.

What is the best audio production hard drive for macbook pro 13" 2.53 ghz?

I'm new to mac, this has been a big transition.
I've been looking on newegg and there are tons of choices.
Looking for a good hard drive for music production in live 8, 7200 rpm has been recommended. Should it be internal or external?
I'm making minimalist oldschool synthpop so I don't need too many plugins or tracks at once but I am gigging so I want gear that's simple, I love everything about the apogee duet in this respect.

For internal, you can't go wrong with the Hitachi Travelstar. They work very well with the MacBook Pro and right now you can get 300 GB of 7200 RPM for less than 75 dollars at Newegg. You could try that and see if you really need an external given the type of music you're working with.
If you decide to get an external, I would steer away from all-purpose drives and get one designed for audio, like the Glyph drives. Along the Apogee Duet simplicity lines, they're designed for music production and they just work. Most of them come with carrying cases. Just plug the Glyph into your MacBook Pro, plug the Duet into the Glyph, and that's it.

GoFlex Thunderbolt or upgrade internal hard drive for imovie editing?

I use AVCHD (1080p60) video format but as many of you know, editing is not very user friendly... well until the new iMovie update. Here is my dilemma: my 500gb internal drive is full (video clips mostly). So, my options are to move the clip library to an external hard drive using USB 2.0 and thunderbolt in order to free up space or install a larger capacity hard drive. I really don't have any desire to invest into Thunderbolt RAID; my NAS needs a second hard drive and Im really having a hard time explaining to my wife why I need the second drive on the top of the black box that she still doesn't understand why it's even there. So justifying the raid isn't an option here.
The question is how would it affect my systems editing performance if I get an external Thunderbolt drive such as Seagate GoFlex vs increasing the internal drive to 1TB and perform all the editing on the internal drive? Optical drive swap is an option as well but I'm concerned with how Mavericks would handle the second hard drive and how it would affect my battery performance.
