What Configuration should i get on the MACBOOK PRO???

my mom's birthday is coming soon and im throwing a surprise party for her. let me start off by saying im 16 years old but i am well aquainted with Mac and PC. I have been around computers since i was about 4. I LOVE THEM.
my mom is starting loans and she needs a laptop for her job. she has never used mac before as she has been around pc all her life.
one of the biggest reasons why i am getting her a macbook pro is because of BOOT CAMP. but at the same time i will do my best to introduce her to OSX. I feel she will pick it up fast.
I wanted some help on deciding how to build her computer.
i have come up with this:
1.83 ghz config w/ 512 ram on 1 slot
on the other slot i will add a 1 gb stick to total 1.5 gb.
(ive found better deals on ebay for memory than apple)
so it comes down to:
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
1.5 gb RAM

If a whine and heat issues are the 'issues' that you're refering to, then I think that there are some more serious issues that could happen than this, and I haven't heard of them. Not everyone has these issues, and if they want to go ahead with a MBP, I say go for it! If their MBP has one or both of the issues, they know well enough to take it to an Apple Store (or wherever) and get it repaired/exchanghed/refunded. I think that the chances that they get a 'bad' MBP are rather slim. It's possible, but not certain. Those who post on these message boards have problems because, well, that's what these message boards are for. Again, I say go for it!

Hey Guys. I think this is in the correct section.
So I have a Macbook Pro (specs at the bottom) and I am looking to add an external monitor to use as a second monitor and at other times a screen for my playstation. I have never had a monitor before so not sure how big? What resolution? What ppi? HD, UHD, 4K? Someone said something about refresh rate. I have no idea what that is. None of this stuff I know.
Obviously I want the best screen I can have and I would connect my Macbook to it by HDMI using a Thunderbolt to HDMI converter and connect my ps3 to it by HDMI.

For professional 'look' care for the other stuff :
tripod with 'fluid head', lights, more lights, ND filters set, ext. microphone(s) at last a shotgun and a lav, ext audio recorder (I'm abusing my ol' iPhone4 and a tiny box called iRig, which offer XLR connector), did I mention lights? , a good bag and a waterproof, lockable aluminium box, soft boxes for light, maybe a shoulder rig (starting at 80€), 200sq ft of some green cloth for green screening (if your school doesn't offer a 'studio') FCPX does marvel with even really bad lighted green screens, those handy foldable 'brighteners'/reflectors, to bounce light ('Rembrandt lightning') … finally tons of odds and ends, starting with gaffer tape, ending with SDcards ...
And DO things, try things, play with your stuff, make experiments just for the trash bin!

What spec monitor should I get?
The only thing I'm worried about is getting the correct connection

i assumed this would mean fast action graphics would display better?

have had this for over two years, moved around a lot with the drive, ( to date ) no problems, they have good after sales support; give them a call if you need info.
There are a lot of drives out there as others here will let you know, there are good NAME drives but they also fail, POPULAR drives also fail, select the one you are happy with for your system and how you plan to use.
i suggest if $ is not a problem get a big drive you will find someting to put on it and is better.

Should I Get an iMac, Macbook Pro, or iPad (3rd Generation))

I'm getting a new "computer" this summer, and I was wondering: Which Apple Device is right for me: iPad 3, iMac, or Macbook Pro? I realize WWDC is this summer (a day after I was planning on getting a Macbook Pro, June 10, which is my birthday) and Apple will be releasing/ unveiling their new products there. I realized that the iMac is more bang for your buck, but people are starting to lean towards portable devices, such as laptops over desktops, and tablets over laptops (mostly). I had planned to get a Macbook Pro (when the 2012 models come out) as of Sunday, April 22. But, as I realized that the prices for each are so different, considering their value, I realized this:
iMac:
"Land" - Locked
More Power for money (student discount)
Will last me longer (at least 2.5 years)
Macbook Pro:
Portable
Costs less (as of student discount)
iPad 3:
Even More Portable
Costs even Less.
Considering these, which do think I should get by the following:
Me:
Go upstate every once a month or so.
Going on vacation in the summer w/ family.
Do light gaming (Sims 3, Civ 5, Spore; not much)
Plan on bragging about being the only one in family w/ Mac (bring to relatives' houses to prove a point to my cousin that he's not the one w/ the coolest computer)
Lots of Word Processing (can use pages on iPad)
w/ iPad, I'll have more money to use on accessories (Step dad giving me $500 towards computer, I'll have $350 by June 10)
Mostly do web browsing.
Want to use in school (high school)
If I get an iPad, I can afford to upgrade it every year, but not the Macs

A couple things I would like to point out:
1.) WWDC /=/ product releases. While it is likely, no one knows for a fact what will happen at WWDC other than usual events. I would expect it, but don't jump the gun and say "a new Mac will be launched at WWDC", because they have been released before WWDC.
2.) The iPad is in a different tier than Mac, IMO. I believe iPads should be supplements to PC's, since if troubleshooting need occur, you must still have a PC to restore. (Mac is PC). So say if you suddenly go into Recovery mode, you will be stuck until you find a PC to restore to. One downfall of iOS devices, so for that reason, I will not recommend the iPad alone.
If you plan to do most of your computing at home, I would get the iMac. I am a college student, and plan on replacing my Macbook Pro (selling it) with an iMac if I can afford it. I agree with you on the "bang for your buck", but even then, iMac is still pricey. With $850, you're still shy $300 of the $1149 price w/education discount. If you want to upgrade your processor (which I would), that's even more $. Plus, software if you need it.
What exactly are you going to do with a Mac that you cannot do with a Windows PC (outside of just using the Mac OS)? The playing field is leveling out quite a bit. But, if you plan on developing of any sort, get a Mac.

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
2011 models must use:
•204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
And 2012 models must use:
•204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only two 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.

What is wrong with OSX on the MacBook Pro and when will it be fixed?

When running Second Life or Worlds of Warcraft or just quick browing... anything graphically intensive on the MacBook Pro, the machine slows to a crawl, eventually completely freezes up. The cursor doesn't move, pressing the Caps Lock key does not change the Caps Lock light and the machine is no longer reachable from any other machine on the network. The only means available to recover is to hold the power button down until the Mac powers off and then restart it. This doesn't happen when running XP through boot camp and windows client versions of these programs. What is wrong with OSX on the MacBook Pro and when will it be fixed? Thanks.

I am not sure that this relevant to the discussion. But I am searching for anyone else who is seeing random freezes on 10.4. I usually don't see anything in the log after I have to do a hard reboot of the box. However, I have noticed some I/O messages when I have been able to console into an affected device, but have not captured to this point. Also, when I am able to console, the box will accept the login, but times out when trying to authenticate the password.
I am also seeing a server freeze on my G4s. I am able to reproduce the problem with a clean install from the 10.4 disk. The issue is reproducible with tcpdump, dumpcap as well as tshark. I have also tried compiling the tools with different versions of libpcap. I am able to reproduce this problem every time with a packet generator sending small packets.
It seems that the small packets aggravate the underlying cause. As the more small packets are sent the quicker I am able to reproduce the problem. With a mix of packet sizes, as seen in most networks, this issue is hard to reproduce. We have been using the G4 since 2003 as a packet analysis tool and it has been very stable up until we attempted to do analysis of a VOIP network with 10.4. The small RTP packets in conjunction with 10.4 seem to be the culprit.
So far I am not able to reproduce the freeze on a 10.2 or 10.3 image. This is not isolated to bad hardware, as I have been able to reproduce on 4 different Xserves in my labs with similar configurations.
I currently have a G4 set up in my lab and would be able to supply any info that may be needed to track down this issue. I have been thrust into administration on this box recently so I am not very familiar with debugging procedures on the Xserve or MacOS. However, I have the hardware and the test equipment that many in a production setting may not have at their disposal. So if anyone, with extensive knowledge of the Xserve or MacOS, is willing to work with me to track down this issue I am willing to do the leg work in the lab. I would appreciate any assistance that is available.

What is the best I7 Intel processor to get on the Macbook Pro 15"? Are these processors 2nd generation processors? Does it matter? Should I wait until - when? - for 2nd generation processors to be used? Does the 2.5 Mh processor make a difference?

I'm about to order a MacBook Pro 15". I wonder if the I7 processors are 2nd generation or if it matters. Also, is there significant benefit to getting the 2.4 or 2.5 Ghz processor over the 2.2? I'm not a gamer or graphics manipulator, but I do look at (not edit) a lot of video for my work, and I typically multi-task, having many applications and internet windows open at once. Also, I will be running Windows for work access and applications. Of course, I have little idea what makes a difference in my use experience, except I plan to get max RAM and probably the fastest hard drive. Any advice welcome.

Couple of follow up questions: What you said about the new specs suggests that the MacBook Pro line has recently been upgraded with, what, the 2nd gen Intel chips, some other incremental improvements? So maybe it has paid off to crawl along with my old mac to get the latest tech. For these kinds of upgrades, I guess Apple doesn't advertise that they have the latest chips (I've seen PC ads touting the 2nd gen chips, and checked out the Intel site, so that's how I became aware) and all?
I'm planning to enjoy this computer for quite some years. Of course I will get the 3 yr extended warranty. And I was planning to get the hi res antiglare screen: that seems to be the best of the options. It looks like one can now get a faster 750 Gb fast drive, instead of having to settle for 500 in the faster version. The cost does add up, but my feeling was to go for broke and get the best machine I can. So does getting the faster cpu and hd and max ram (perhaps buying third party) and all make sense, assuming I can afford it when I add everything up, or is it like a moderately good guitar player getting a top of the line guitar he can't really play well enough to warrant it? (I remember a story about a student under Segovia arriving with a very very expensive guitar when he was still early in the learning process; it may be apocryphal, but story goes that Segovia took the guitar from the student and smashed it to smithereens. I assume that was not just because the student mistook the instrument for skill in playing it, but perhaps also because he would be too careful with such an expensive instrument, and fail to master it. Maybe not a perfect analogy, but I could be mislead by seeking the "best barn burner on the block" when what I need is what will work fine for my purposes.) So I think your original response was probably right on in terms of what will actually be of use to me.

Should I get a new Macbook pro?

I have had my white Macbook for over three years now. First of all, it runs really sluggish most times now. I mean, I'm still able to use it, however, it is significantly slower than when I first got it. The disc drive no longer works, and hasn't worked for about a year now. Instead of spending 200ish dollars to get it fixed, I just bought an external one. The Macbook pro now is really new and having been recently approved for the barclaycard, I would be able to finance it over the next twelve months. I have heard people say that right now is the perfect time to buy a Macbook pro and that it should last me at least the next six years. Should I just tough it out and wait until my current Macbook really is driven into the ground, or should I take advantage of my current student discount and the prime time to buy a Macbook pro?
I am really leaning towards getting it, but still debating.

That is a really good question. The difference in performance will be huge for you, but on the other hand the new Pro's are buggy right now (heat, 10.6.7 update glitches, freezes,). Of course common sense tells us that new iteration bugs happen to the minority - most people will be happy with their new machines. Read the posts here about new machine issues and see if you are up to the challenge. I'm seeing a lot of people solving their problems, but as a rule: if you wait a while after a major upgrade you can avoid issues completely.

For some reason Displays no longer shows that information, so I don't know what it is. However, the last time I saw the information on a 2009 MBP it was 75.
I'd think there is a utility around that might provide the info like Display Maestro 1.1.7 or SwitchResX.

I bought a Macbook Pro Retina to replace my old 2007 Macbook. When I hook my Retina up to my Acer 1080p LED Monitor, it does not display in full quality. I assume this is due to the size of the graphics card inside the laptop. My old macbook displayed a perfect picture on this same monitor.
I want to buy a new monitor that can display my Retina in full quality, but I don't want to break the bank to get a Thunderbolt Display. Any suggestions on a monitor I can get?

Try adjusting manually the resolution on the external monitor. You may have to degrade slightly the resolution on the built in monitor when you do this. I have been told that the Mac automatically tries to optimize the picture quality on the retina display at the expense of the resolution on the external monitor. You may have to "redistribute" manually the available resolution to favor more the external display.
