What do I download to update Java?

Hello,
My antivirus software says I should update "c:\windows\system32\java.exe", and gives a link to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp from this description:
http://www.viruslist.com/en/advisories/31010
What do i want to download? I see "java se 6 update 10 rc", "jdk 6 update 7", "jdk 6 update 7 with jee", "jdk 6 update 7 with netbeans 6.1", "jre 6 update 7", and it just looks like a random combination of J's, 6's, and 7's to me.
Thanks!

Yes it's a just random combination of sixes and sevens... the J's are just there for seasoning!
Seriously... http://www.viruslist.com/en/advisories/31010 (badly) lists multiple security vulnerabilities for undistinguished versions of the Sun Java environment, which is not (typically) c:\windows\system32\\java.exe... that's (typically) the (poopy) Microsoft JVM.
What have you got?
Do you have a Sun JRE or JDK installed on your machine? To find out go:
* Start ~ Settings ~ Control Panel ~ Add/remove programs (names vary between versions)
* scroll down to J for Java... the publisher will be "Sun Microsystems, Inc."
If you have anything (less than Java(TM) 6 Update 7) installed consider updating to 1.6_7, or even 1.6_10 (still a beta last time I looked).
What do you want to do?
* The JRE = runtime environment; for users
* The JDK = development kit ((typically) includes JRE); for us hackers
* SE JDK = standard edition = the core language; for all hackers
* EE JDK = enterprise edition = SE + Java (web) application server; for good hackers
Cheers. Keith.

  • What does the Download and Update do to your iPod?

I've always been worried if it was going to change my iPod any.
    If this matters:
I have bought all my music through Apple. %100 Apple.

The download download the firmware update file to yur computer.  The Update actually updates the firmware on the iPod. Yu can download the update for later installation.
Music is not included in the backup that iTunes makes during each sync and at the begining of a firmware update.  Therefore, you nned to ensure that the music is in your iTunes library before the update.  If you are in the USA you can redownoad music (and apps an dsome other stuff too) via iCloud beta:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
When iCloud goes out of beta you should be able to do that i other countries too.

  • What's the deal with updating Java?

I see this every couple of minutes in the System Log:
    3/9/15 8:04:58.972 AM launchctl[17546]: launchctl: Couldn't stat("/Library/LaunchAgents/com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist"): No such file or directory
I'm guessing that "stat" is a typo and should really say "start".
Something in my system is preventing my installing the latest Java 8: when I download and try the Oracle installer it tells me that I have a "later version" installed and refuses to run. I obviously don't have a later version installed, since none such exists. Also, there is no Java preference pane in my System Preferences.
What kind of cruft is hanging around in my system causing this? It's Mavericks Server, 10.9.5.
/Library/Java contains empty folders "Extensions" and "JavaVirtualMachines", plus a "Home" alias pointing to /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
/System/Library/Java has the same two folders as above, which are not empty. "JavaVirtualMachines" contains "1.6.0.jdk". There's also a "Support" folder
    containing "CoreDeply.bundle" and "Deploy.bundle".
(and yes, I know Apple's official position is to hate on Java, but still…)

Has anyone had a normal non-cleaning install of this week's update?

  • What happens after downloading iPod Updater-after clicking restore?

I have a problem with my ipod that's a bit complicated and can anyone just help? See what happened was, my ipod was in a scan mode, so my cousin tells me. After the battery died, I recharged it, hoping it would stop but it didn't. The next day, all the songs in my ipod are gone and now, I downloaded the ipod updater and plugged in my ipod and clicked restore, and now I don't know if it's ok now. It still says Do Not Disconnect. Should I or shouldn't I? what the **** is up?

It could probably be in the Hard Drive mode. If its not, I would recommend resetting.
Turn on hold, then turn off. Then hold Menu, and the center button at the same time for about 6 seconds, should make the apple logo show and it should fix it.

  • Download of updated Java Version 7 Update 65...Hp PALION P7-1234

The problem I have is some function of pogo games are operational and some games will not load.  The message states I have to upload the latest version of Java, or verify it has been enabled, etc.  I have followed every step to make sure Java is completely downloaded & enabled, etc.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program and still I continue having the same problem.

    Hi Babs20,
The only explanation I can think of is some of those games may not be compatible with the latest version of Java.
You may have to contact the developer for updated versions of the misbehaving games.

Firefox needs 32-bit plugins, so you'll need to install 32-bit Java for Firefox.
No, you can't change Firefox from 32-bt to 64-bit. There is a Nightly 64-bit version (alpha) of Firefox, but it is used only to test for regressions until development is resumed.

  • Adobe Application Manager "There was an error downloading this update"

I have recently upgraded my PC (new motherboard, CPU, memory, etc) and have reinstalled my copy of Photoshop CS5 Extended.
I forgot to deactivate my copy prior to formatting my hard drive.
Adobe application manager is telling me that I have multiple updates pending but when I run the updater it spends 15-20 minutes doing what looks like downloading the updates then proceeds to give me an error saying:
"There was an error downloading this update. Please quit and try again later."
    Please see the screenshot below.
I'm sure I'm missing something simple here but I cant figure it out. Is there anything I can do to get these updates to work?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
    1. Maybe - as you will have gathered - you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.
Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences. (I quote from Preran: The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.)
    Good luck!

What's up with this update re: Java?
    Do I have it?

You don't have it unless you have downloaded and installed it either manually or via Software Update.
The update should be installed to protect you from possible malware exploits via Java. However, if you don't use Java programming or run Java applets in your browser, then you do not need the update. But you must turn Java off in your browser's security preferences (it will be a checkbox.)

    J2SE 1.4.2 was already unchecked.
    Did I get this right?
Wasnt sure if I was  was disabling Java or Java Script here....
That is Java. Those are also really old versions. You can actually keep them turned on in Java Preferences.
What you want to change is in Safari > Preferences > Security and turn off Java there. Leave Javascript turned on.
This way, the only thing you disable is Java applets, which are useless anyway. If you need to run any Java programs, they will still work. If you have any specific site that requires a Java applet, you can always turn it on just for that site and turn it back off when you are done.

I get error message -42408 when trying to download itunes update 11.0.2 and I therefore can not update to that latest version.  What can I do?

    Hey there davidgor2!
I have found an article that should help you resolve this issue with updating your iTunes. The article can be found here:
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297
and the specific part of the article you will want to look at first is right here:
    "Error 42023" through "Error 42408"
These alerts might occur when trying to authorize iTunes or during launch when iTunes checks for authorization information.
Install the latest iTunes from apple.com/itunes/download/
    Remove the SC Info folder.
If that does not resolve the issue, see iTunes: "Error 42408" or "Error 42404" after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.3.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I suspect if you're trying to open a file in 08 that's been opened in 09 the file has been updated to 09 and will not open in 08.

  • I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do

I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat manually when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do.

The malware it's finding is probably Windows malware attached to e-mail messages. What are the names of some of those things? Assuming they're not Mac malware, allowing Sophos (or any other anti-virus software) to remove them could cause problems. For example, if they're attached to e-mail, removing them improperly by simply deleting the message file will leave the malware on the e-mail server, and it may very well end up getting re-downloaded when your mail client syncs with the server. It may also corrupt the mailbox.
If you actually ever see a malware name starting with MacOS or OSX (I forget which one Sophos uses), then you will need to worry, and should not assume that the malware can be completely removed by anti-virus software of any kind.
