What do I need to manage shell shock or bash bug on my airport router

What do I need to do to manage shell shock or bash bug on my airport router?

I do have shell access to my apple router..
When I run command to test for bash vulnerability.
tcgen4# env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"
env: bash: No such file or directory
If I just type bash.
tcgen4# bash
bash: not found
So they have not complied bash into the airport routers.
Apple routers are not running BASH.. you have nothing to worry about.
(I have only tested  N wireless models)
It is probably running the standard busybox shell. The env command shows the shell as SHELL=/bin/sh
I do not have the latest version AC models.. but it is certainly not part of the earlier N wireless model airports. I would not think the change to the AC model will make any difference and it is still based on NetBSD.
Thanks to John for sane comments.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
My Mac is vulnerable.
When I run the command..
env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"
vulnerable
this is a test
The output shows that the Mac is allowing commands via bash.
In order to access my computer from outside, a person would need passwords or something shared and open.. I have nothing.. and simply being behind a NAT router provides plenty of protection.. in due course when Apple releases the updates.. (I am fully up to date now).. I will apply it. Until then I suspect I will be more likely to die of heart attack than be hacked..

  • What skills are needed to manage Exalogic?

    Hi there
Please let me know if I should be directing this question to another Forum and which Forum it should be.
We are thinking of purchasing Exalogic with a view to having a private Cloud.
What skills are needed or teams in order to manage Exalogic in-house?
I've used google but not really found the answers other than a couple of Oracle docs which suggest sys admins teams, network teams, etc could all have a hand in the management as they currently exist.
However, Management are wondering if a new team needs to be formed and what skills that team should have.
As we already have Exadata under the DBA team they are wondering if the skills the DBAs have will also apply for Exalogic.
    Thanks.

  • My itunes and iphone are not working together. all my software is up to date. what i can do? i need to manage my phone!!

I'm getting extremely frustrated with my iphone and mac.
i have the iphone 4, and the mac is leopard.
I plugged my phone it to manage my music, and a message popped up saying i needed software 10.6.8 or higher.
so i downloaded the 10.7. it's still not working!
i have very little space left on my phone and i need to manage everything.
    what do i do??
    someone please help!!!!

    We need clarification here.
Please don't just state version numbers, also state which software.  iTunes 10.7 requires OSX 10.6.8 or higher.  Leopard is OSX 10.5.8.  You have two alternatives right now.  One is to stay with Leopard for a while (ultimately you should upgrade) and install iTunes 10.6.3 which is the last version to work with Leopard.  This should work with iOS6 on an iPhone4.  The other is to call Apple and order OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and upgrade the computer to 10.6.8 which will allow you to run iTunes 10.7.  The caveat is we know nothing about which computer you run and if it even can run any system higher than Leopard.
    Here is iTunes 10.6.3
    iTunes 10.6.3 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
If you want to try upgrading:
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About this Mac" and "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).  If it says something about Intel or Core Duo or Core 2 Duo in the processor you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (assuming you have sufficient RAM/"memory").  If it says PPC or PowerMac, you cannot.
Kappy 08/2012 post on upgrading to Snow Leopard, then Lion or Mountain Lion -  https://discussions.apple.com/message/19401628 - including how to get Snow Leopard and Lion since Apple removed them from the online store.
It would help when posting issues here if you would state exact error messages you see.  "It's still not working!" while a description of the situation does not speed us to a diagnosis of the underlying issue.

  • Sharepoint 2010 question : Error while deploying wsp file in using managment shell (power script)

When I tried to deploy the wsp's using managment shell (power shell scripts) everything looks good.
When I go and take a look the "manage farm solutions" thru sharepoint central admin, I see the deployment failed in two servers.
    Error is
Could not load file or assembly 'c:\windows\Temp\solution-cxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\xxx.xxx.dll" or one of its dependencies. Access is denied.
Can you please let me know what could be the reason.
Note : I have two app servers and two web servers setup. The deployment is sucessful in 2 apps servers . but 2 web servers are giving error.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to failed to deploy the wsp's using managment shell.
You need to make sure that the dll is registered in the GAC.
Go to %Windows%\assembly. If the dll isn't there , you need to install it to the GAC on the server. Simply drag it into that folder in Windows Explorer, and it should install itself.
Here is a similar thread for your reference:

  • Is there Exchange 2013 view Exchange Management Shell command similar to Exchange 2010

    Hi,
Is there anything similar in Exchange 2013 (Please refer the image).  In Exchange 2010 if you make any changes via Management console you could go to "View Exchange Management Shell Command Log" and see what shell command it ran in the background.
It was very handy to copy shell command from here and then run it from shell in case you need to make bulk changes rather than try to find out the shell command from scratch.
I was wondering if there is anything similar in Exchange 2013.
    Thanks,
    Raman

    Probably in SP1...

  • Error connecting to the Exchange Management Shell - and no one can connect w/ Outlook or OWA

Whew - I'm not sure what's happening but everything blew up this morning when another admin rebooted the server...
I can't connect to the Exchange Management shell - I get this:
[<servername>.<domainname>.local] Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : WS-Management cannot process the request. The operation failed because of an HTTP error. The HTTP error (12152) is: The server returned

And in digging around, re-running the sharepoint PSConfig appeard to be a fix for a related issue I was reading about, and since there didn't seemt to be any harm in running it again (I did find the technote and had manually ran it after SP1 was installed)
I ran it and this is an excerpt from the log:

server is joined to a server farm.  Possible reasons for this failure could be that you no longer have the appropriate permissions to the server farm, the database server hosting the server farm is unresponsive, the configuration database is inaccessible
or this server has been removed from the server farm.  To diagnose this problem further, review the extended error information located at {0}.  If this problem persists, run this wizard again to disconnect from the server farm.  After disconnecting,
run the wizard again to create or connect to an existing server farm.
So I seem to have some massive permissions issues.  Is there any kind  of a technote or walkthrough that can step me through verifying what permissions should be where?  The connect to Internet Wizard won't complete complaining it can't configure
the email and to run it again.  That caused the Set Up your Internet Address wizard to not run, complaining you have to run the connect to Internet wizard.

Is there any update on the issue?
No.  I gave up and rebuilt the server - this time inside of HyperV!
It's definetly a problem of some sort of a problem with IIS, that much is obvious.  It's frustrating, because by not being able to get to the Exchange Management Shell it made recovery of the Exchange database VERY hard.
The rest of this will be a bit of a rant so feel free to stop reading here if you like :)
I'm pretty unhappy with the fragility of recovering an Exchange databas in general - there is a VERY narrow range of parameters to get mail back - and very many things that can prevent you from recovering.  Had I suspected that there would have been
1/10th the pain in recovering mail, before I tried to connect the clients to the new exchange I would have made .PST files for everyone - which would have worked since they all had cached .OST files, even if the clients couldn't talk to Exchange due to the
aformentioned IIS problems.  Anyway, it was a total nightmare, extremly frustrating and while many of my problems were probalby self-induced, the total lack of a coherant disaster recovery strategy has at least motivated me to be EXTREMLY diligent about
backups - and not just backups, but ensuring that the SBS backup is working and occasionally firing up a clone VM and doing a restore to ensure the one of two ways Exchange can be successfully backed up are indeed working.
With such an extreme dependence on IIS for client acces AND managemet of Exchange, there really, REALLY needs to be more documentation on how Exchange uses IIS, how to step through the registry and other low-level internals to troubleshoot and compare.
I must have read just about every technet article and literallly hundreds of blog entries on recovering Exchange - but the lack of information about Exchange's integration and dependancies on IIS were the most frustrating of all.  Talk about putting all
your eggs in one basket and a huge single point of failure ticking time bomb!
And I think it was either SharePoint Express or an accidently applied SharePoint Express update that blew up IIS.  A few days after that update got applied the server was restarted, and that's when everything went completly sideways.  That's whats
even more frustrating - that so many applications are so dependant on a now essential layer is frustrating.  I realize SBS is an exception to the rule - generally Exchange is installed on it's own server and this isn't a remote possiblity, but any update
(or installer) that messes with IIS really needs to check the environment it's going to go into, and if there is anything at all that could possibly cause a compatibility issue, the update should "fail open" and not install wtihout explicit confirmation
from the admin that he wants to isntall it.  Then again, another admin either ran the installer or approved the SP Express update so that still may not have saved me  - but if he saw an explicit warning he probably would not have just clicked through
    it!
Oh well - thanks for reading if you went all the way through.  I'm just glad that it's now over :)

  • Forcefully delete user's "Deleted Items" from Exchange 2010 Management shell ?

After migration from Exchange 2003 to 2010 my organization's some user can't delete items from their deleted items folder, it generate a error message so how can I forcefully delete user's deleted items from their "Deleted Items folder" from
Exchange 2010 Management shell ? Thanks
    Babu

    Hi Babu ,
Based on my knowledge i have given some suggestions please have a look in to it.
1.We cannot use the search-mailbox command specifically for any folder in the mailbox. But we can use it for a whole mailbox.Below is the command which will copy the entire contents of the mailbox to the target folder called as "backup" .
Search-Mailbox -Identity "problematic mailbox name" -TargetMailbox "test mailbox" -TargetFolder "backup" -LogLevel Full -deletecontent
Note : Before executing the above command , please execute the below.
New-ManagementRoleAssignment -Name "Import Export_Enterprise Support" -SecurityGroup "Enterprise Support" -Role "Mailbox Import Export"
Once the above command is executed then you need to add your admin account to the security group "Enterprise Support" and then use the Search-Mailbox command to copy the entire items to the target mailbox and also it will delete all the copied
    items from the original mailbox.
2.Another one option is to use the MFCMAPI tool to force delete the items on the deleted items folder.
Most importantly before doing all the above , please share me the error message what your users are facing while deleting the items from deleted items folder.
    Thanks & Regards S.Nithyanandham

  • Shell shock patch

Hi there when will the shell shock patch be available please? Also what are the precoutions I can take right now to guarantee nothing will happen to my computer please? I have mavericks

If you are running a web server or are one of what Apple calls its "advanced UNIX users" apply the recent patch by downloading it from the GNU project archive.
If you don't know what that is, how to obtain it, or how to apply it to your server, then you are not affected and there is nothing you need to do.
Apple announced they are "working to quickly provide a software update for our advanced UNIX users."
There are plenty of bad things that could happen to a system due to existing vulnerabilities, known or unknown. There is no reason for any more concern today than there has ever been. Bash has been included with OS X for years, perhaps since its inception, and the particular flaw that was just discovered may have existed for years prior to that.
Similar vulnerabilities may also be discovered and exploited, now or in the future. The resulting effects, if there are any, cannot be accurately predicted.
    Until then:
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them.

  • Any speculation around Bash "Shell shock" impact on VMware products?

According to VMware investigating bash command injection vulnerability aka Shell Shock (CVE-2014-6271, CVE-2014-7169) | VMware Securi…, VMware is investigating the impacts of the Bash security vulnerability on VMware products.
What do you think about the possible impact on ESXi hosts? Vulnerable to remote code execution or not?

Does anybody know if the vShield Manager 5.1.4.1912202 is affected by shellshock? Thanks!!
While not mentioning vShield Manager in particular, the KB article lists "vCloud Networking and Security 5.x (aka VMware Shield 5.x)" which the vShield Manager virtual appliance is a part of.
Since the vShield Manager virtual appliance runs a full GNU/Linux OS underneath, I'm 99% certain it has a bash and is thus affected as well, like all the other virtual appliances. In fact, I'm not aware of any VMware virtual appliance that don't have a bash shell (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
It seems like VMware is doing the proper thing and disabling parsing in bash altogether.
Probably requires a lot more QA testing, but mitigates future parser bugs that are most likely coming.
    http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2014/09/29/43
    That's quite interesting.
This raises the general issue of virtual appliances and patching once again. The GNU/Linux OS running in pretty much all appliances is just a customized version of another popular distribution (majorly SuSe in VMware's VAs), so in theory you could just update with the distributions default packages instead of having to wait for vendors to publish it's "certified" updates.
I completely agree that QA is important and it can be problematic for certain packages like java, webserver or database software and depending libraries. But updates to more "generic" applications like bash or openssl (heartbleed), which only fix a very certain code area, shouldn't cause any issues in the applications.
Given the severity of bugs like Shellshock and Heartbleed, there might be limited patience in some environments with waiting for vendors re-packing fixes that are released since some time.
That "updating" a virtual appliance sometimes means "deploy a new VA from scratch and migrate data" doesn't help in that regard either.

Upgrading RAM and your HD will give you some performance gains, but depending on what you are doing, it may not be enough. Your best friend will always be processor speed. This has a direct relation to how many cores and the speed of the RAM.
However, if you are unable to spring for a new computer, then the options of running more RAM and a biggger, faster HD should ruduce some bottle necks.

I just got my Mac back from Apple repair and I can't burn a disc. What do I need to do to make that happen?

    Hello deneye2112,
Thank you for providing the details of the burning issue you are experiencing.  I found some resources that I think might help:
First, I recommend resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac (I wasn't sure if you had a removable battery or a built in battery, so I listed the steps for both):
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
Note: Learn about removing the battery on MacBook and MacBook Pro.
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your ownNote: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

If you are still having trouble with burning after that step, I recommend reviewing the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.
