What encoding is the wide character,UCS2, UTF-8, other?

(please view using simplified chinese encode )
environment sets:
LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.GB18030 LC_ALL=zh_CN.GB18030
my C program code:
wchar_t *pwc = L"";
main()
printf("\n [%x]", *pwc);
run it, the printing result: [2bc7]
I expect to get the UCS2 code value 0x6c49 of "(the character in GB2312 standar) ,but the result is wrong.
my questions:
1. What is the wide character that had be got by adding 'L' before locale character . Is it UCS2 , UTF-8, other code?
2. How to getting the UCS2 code of the locale character '' by adding "L"?

I see your issue. I tried to reproduce this issue using sqlplus.

• What does knowing the number of "views" tell us about a thread.

10 Points to the person who can give a cogent, rational, non-apologetic answer to the questions posed below, which are based on the premiss set forth just before it. (Please feel free, if you see fit, to dispute the premiss).
PREMISS:
People might "look" at a thread for a whole host of reasons -- whether it be to read the thread and contribute, or just to lurk, or because the thread's title was ambiguous, or funny, or in some other way remarkable apart from any substantive value it may have, or, even, just by accident, because the person clicked on the wrong button and inadvertently "looked" at the thread for a nanosecond before exiting. And probably for other reasons as well.....
QUESTION:
In light of the foregoing, what does knowing the number of "views" tell us other than what it says, i.e., does it tell us anything apart from the number of people that have for whatever reason literally just taken a look at the thread?
If the answer to the above question is nothing -- i.e., the number of "views" tells us just that, the number of "views" and nothing more -- then why is this information so prominently featured, instead of, say, the information that used to be present under the old Discussions system, such as the number of unread posts in a particular thread, which is data that actually has a value as something other than a statistic. Knowing the number of unread posts indicates to someone following a particular thread, whether there has been additional contributions to the thread that should be reviewed if one is to remain current on the substance of that particular discussion. The extent of the additional contributions (if any) are readily apparent from the count).
The little, difficult-to-discern-on-my-PowerBook's-screen tiny blue dot can hardly be said to take the place of the unread post count, as it shows the same indicator for one new post as it does for ten or even a hundred.
Thanks for your help with this.

Hi Scott --
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. It did help, and I've even marked it "helpful" under the new, bizarre point system to evidence this fact. (BTW, my "offer" of a point award was more a misplaced attempt at sardonic humor aimed at deriding the new point system, with which I have a number of strong disagreements, than it was an effort to bribe thoughtful replies like yours. Please know that I really do appreciate the time and effort you took to get back to me on this and meant no disrespect by the "reward" point bounty).
That said, I do have one follow up. You write that "the idea behind this [use of "views" rather than number of posts unread] is that even discounting curiosity, boredom, funny title, et al., the number of folks that have looked at a thread should bear some relation to the number of folks who are having that issue."
I just don't think that that's the case. I don't think it sufficently discounts curiosity, boredom, funny title, et al. Those are some pretty powerful motivations for people to peruse this site. And there are many, many others as well.
Of course I can only speak with certainty of my own personal experience with the Discussions, but based on that, I know have "viewed" numerous threads on subject matters that not only wasn't I experiencing, but on subject matters that I couldn't possibly experience,because it concerned Mac hardware or software that I don't own or have never used.
In some cases, I looked at threads where the subject line sounded interesting, or amusing, or provocative, in other cases I looked at threads that concerned hardware or software that I once owned (and so I thought I might be able to help with the problem at issue), in still other cases the thread concerned software and/or hardware that I was considering purchasing (and wanted to know what I might be getting into). With regard to the former of those two reasons, I know there were many, many instances where, based on the title of the post, I knew that I could help and I viewed the post as a form of oversight (so to speak) to make sure that the responses being left were providing accurate and complete information.
In my "view," though clearly not in the "view" of the Mods, et al. for reasons (thanks to your post) that I can at least better articulate (if not understand or agree with), a thread's number of "views" is susceptible to just too many possible meanings to make it of any real use. The number of unread posts (and by this I refer to the old numeric value of posts not yet read and not that illegible little blue dot used in the new system) may not be perfect information, but it is certainly more useful in my "view" than the number of "views." (I apologize for those poor puns on the word "view," but in my "view" they were unavoidable, sort of. See what I mean
Anyway. I really do thank you for your reply and the time and effort you took to make it. But, alas, with each hour I use these New Discussions, the more convinced I become that my continued time on here is fading. With no more hope of leveling up, with even less hope of ever receiving any tangible sign of "thanks for your help" in the form of + votes (insignificant as they were, at least they were something, everyone like to feel appreciated), with the posts much more difficult to read on my PowerBook's screen and even more difficult to keep track of, and for a bunch of other reasons (some admittedly petty, and some that strike at the core of why and how I use this site), I fear that I will soon be saying farewell.
But till then, thanks once again for your thoughtful reply.

• What Determines the "File Character Set" on Export?

When we Export a Page, for example, from APEX, the File Character Set is defaulted to some value (and not editable). On some of our instances, this defaults to "Western European Windows 1252" while on others it is "Unicode UTF-8." Specifically, what setting is being used to make this determination? This is kind of a pain because we have some environments wherein we are promoting changes from environment to environment and these settings differ. If, during import, the user neglects to set this to the same File Character Set in which the file was originally exported, we get issues (non-printable control characters and the like). Therefore, we'd love to make all of the environments match but, aren't sure how to do this.
Thanks,
-Joe

Hello Joe,
In your environment, the character set of the APEX exported files is set according to the DAD character set, and with your APEX version, it must be set to AL32UTF8 (regardless of the database character set).
Re: Export - File Character Set list is read only (fixe UTF-8 value)
You should check the DAD character set setting in the environments in which APEX is not exporting the files using UTF8.
Regards,
Arie.

• Why does Firefox 18 ignore the specified character encoding for websites?

We are developing a page on our website that will have the page crawled and a newsletter generated and sent out to a mailing list. Many email packages default to character encoding of iso-8859-1 so we have set our character encoding to this on the page via the standard meta tag.
We have a problem on the newsletters that we had until now been unsuccessful to replicate. Though now I know why.... I have just discovered that in Firefox 18, the specified character encoding is being completely ignored. It is rendering the page in UTF-8 even though we specified ISO-8859-1. Firefox 3.6 however, renders the page with the proper encoding (thank god for keeping an old version for testing).
Can anyone explain why the new Firefox is completely ignoring the meta tag? Both browsers are using the factory default (I even opened FF18 in safe mode)...

Thanks for letting me know that Firefox 18 ignores everything but the server headers... but it doesn't help me much. Our website is in UFT-8... but this page is a newsletter, one that is crawled and saved into an email and sent out to a mailing list (by a third party newsletter program) and many email readers use ISO-8859-1 hence why we want to have the page rendered in that encoding so that we can actually test the newsletter properly. We can't test through the third party software as our testing environment is behind a firewall, and you can't change the server headers for a single page... hence the meta tag.
If you explicitly choose to render a page in a specific encoding, that shouldn't be ignored by the browser. It's not a big deal, but now every time we make a code change in our test environment and reload the page we have to force the encoding manually in the browser which is a pain.
The problem is, the newsletter is already live and we have some users complaining because some characters aren't displaying properly in their email packages (Entourage for Mac is one of them), all our testing (which is encoding using UTF-8) looks fine.

• Database character set = UTF-8, but mismatch error on XML file upload

Dear experts,
I am having problems trying to upload an XML file into an XMLType table. The Database is 9.2.0.5.0, with the character set details:
SELECT *
FROM SYS.PROPS$
WHERE name like '%CHA%';
Query results:
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET          UTF8     NCHAR Character set
NLS_SAVED_NCHAR_CS          UTF8
NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS          .,     Numeric characters
NLS_CHARACTERSET          UTF8     Character set
NLS_NCHAR_CONV_EXCP          FALSE     NLS conversion exception
To upload the XML file into the XMLType table, I am using the command:
insert into XMLTABLE
values(xmltype(getClobDocument('ServiceRequest.xml','UTF8')));
However, I get the error:
ORA-31011: XML parsing failed
ORA-19202: Error occurred in XML processing
LPX-00200: could not convert from encoding UTF-8 to UCS2
Error at line 1
ORA-06512: at "SYS.XMLTYPE", line 0
ORA-06512: at line 1
Why does it mention UCS2, as can't see that on the Database character set?
Many thanks for your help,
Mark

USC2 is known as AL16UTF16(LE/BE) by Oracle...
Try using AL32UTF8 as the character set name
AFAIK The main difference between Oracle's UTF8 and AL32UTF8 character set is that is the UTF8 character set does not support those UTF-8 characteres that require 4 bytes..

• Does not support french character in UTF-8

I am using adobe flash 3 and all coding pattern in action script 2.
I have french language's xml file which I have to show content in flash player. I have used UTF-8 for encoding. But my french encoding character is not working.How to show french language character such as " é " character ? I have used " é " for " é "character in UTF-8 format. But shows exactly what I encode é. Is there any way to support encoded character in xml ? so, that it could show in flash player in french language.
My French Language xml file is attached with this post.

I hope you mean you are using Flash CS3? because Flash 3 is from more than 10 years ago and doesn't support AS2 or unicode AFAIK.
Assuming that you are using CS3 and that your XML file is properly saved as UTF-8. Then the usual problem is that the special character has not been embedded in the text field or that the font doesn't have that character.
But first are you sure that the file is saved as UTF-8? I ask because many people have come to these forums and say that their file is UTF-8 and we work on it for a couple of days and at the end they find out that it isn't. Just adding the UTF-8 header tag to a text file does not make it UTF-8. Whatever program that created the file must support proper UTF-8 encoding.
You don't need to do any special escaping or converting the character to html code. If it is unicode just type the character normally. And save your XML file.
The next thing to check is whether Flash is reading the character correctly. You can do this in a number of ways. What I usually do is have the code that reads the XML and then either trace the nodes from the onLoad handler. Or in the test environment I go to the debug menu and "List Variables." That will show all the variables and their value. If the character shows properly in the output window then you know that the file is encoded properly and that Flash is reading it properly and that the problem must be with the textfield and the font embedding.
If the character isn't right in the output window then you know that the problem is with the text encoding.
