What file does network settings touch when setting proxy?

I've set automatic proxy automatic configuration file in Gnome3, after I uninstalled Gnome3 and switch to i3-wm, the proxy setting just works. But when I want to update the setting, I can't find the configure file from nowhere.
I digged in my .config directory for long, but nothing was found. Some people say such a file does not exist, I just want to know how do those desktop environments make it?
Thanks.
PS: Even if I would quit this, the former proxy is too old to use, yet Chrome would like to use system proxy setting, so Chrome can't use the proxy any more. OK, this is another question.....

Well, if it was NetworkManager that you were using, it has its configs under /etc/NetworkManager. /etc/ is generally where system config stuff lives.
EDIT: grammar

  • What files does TestStand add to a computer when a new TestStand application is deployed?

What files (names and directories) are created when a new TestStand application is installed on to a computer? Does TestStand create a new set of files each time that a new application is installed?

    Hi,
This depends on how you configure the installer. TestStand 2.0 and 3.0 contain different methods of deploying a TestStand system. Could you tell us what version of TestStand you are using?

  • When using cloud backup, what files does it make sense not to back up?

I have signed up with Zipcloud for cloud back up of files (after both time capsule and seagate external drives failed on me).
It's been a few days and I am very frustrated by what was not explained before I signed up, such as upload times, etc.
I ask my question about what files it might make sense not to back up to the cloud, because at the rate of backing up 4-8 GB a day (which is what Ziplcoud says to expect)  it will take 3  months to back up all my data! Seems crazy.
Also, although I have been told by Zipcloud that there software will not interfere with my computer's performance, my experience is to the contrary. Coincidence?  Wondering about the experience of others in terms of impact on computer's performance?
I welcome general opiions and experiences with cloud backup as well as the answers to my specific questions.   I also am open to suggestions of reliable affordable back-up companies with support.
Zipcloud's email based support could not be much more frustrating!  I send a question that doesn't really get addressed with my original question dropped from the reply so that I need to repeat my question—each answer coming from a different customer service person, no continuity within the same issue, no real resolution.
Is cloud back up really worth it??  And back to my original question, for which files and for which files not to bother.
    Thanks,
    Ani
PS.  Final question:  have people found data recovery problematic from cloud backup?
    I have a MAcbook Pro  OSX 10.8.5

Methodologies to protect your valuable data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection approaches
Cloud based storage should not be considered a data archive due to security concerns, and the transient ephemeral nature of cloud storage which can only be quasi-possessed.
There is no such thing as "cloud storage"........   Cloud storage just means 1000s of HD in a building
    5.  *The above leads to another question, which is for how long to trust an external drive?
Given the second law of thermodynamics, any and all current mfg. HD will, under perfect storage conditions tend themselves to depolarization and a point will be reached, even if the HD mechanism is perfect, that the ferromagnetic read/write surface of the platter inside the HD will entropy to the point of no return for data extraction.
HD life varies, but barring mechanical failure, 3-8 years typically.
Some advantages of a cloned hard drive:
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.

  • What file size is used for when uploading to MobileMe from Aperture?

When I upload my photo files from Aperture (and previously from iPhoto) I routinely use the upload setting named "dowloading of optimized" files.  I know that this downsizes the files for faster upload/download, but still gives a file size acceptable for great onscreen presentation and for a resulting small print of someone downloads.  Can anyone tell what downsizing Aperture does in this case?  For example, 50% jpeg, email sized jpeg, etc.  Since Apple will kill the MobileMe galleries in June I have to switch to another photo presentation host.  For upload to such a host Aperture gives choices like 100% jpeg, 50% jpeg, etc.  What I want to do is end up with something similar to what I now get with the "optimized" setting.  Thank you.

You will note that I referenced both programs (iPhoto & Aperture) in my original message above, and I have posted in both forums.  Since both programs offer the same (at least on the surface) option of "optimized" to MobileMe galleries, one might assume that both use the same or a similar system.  Lengthly testing of my own is the "best" solution only if I can not find anyone who is knowledgeable about what these programs do in the upload.  It has been my sincere joy over many many years that I often find people on these forums who possess knowledge much greater than I.  As to the programs changing the algorithum at any time, I doubt that since this MobileMe function will disappear in June.  Seems like a strange time to make changes.

  • What file does ipod use for library and how do i access it?

    Hi.
I almost put this in the ipod discussion but the question has to do with itunes as well...
I have learned that itunes uses an xml file for the library, containing all song information and playlists (not sure about id3 tags for .wav, mp3) but when i looked at my data for the ipod i found no .xml files.
Heres what happened and why i need this:
unplugged the ipod after an osx reboot to winxp bootcamp hung. then i noticed the ipod was erased (or so i thought)
Couldn't access any of the data on the ipod and hadnt a spare 80 gigs to back up my ipod.
I didn't give up and after trying so many data recovery programs i got one to work and now i have what looks like all the songs back - with song titles and filenames - on my comp.
I want my library back too. I want my hard wrought playlists and i want to know what songs i may be missing; I need to rebuild my 'library'.
with the data i retrieved there is a folder called root, and if you follow and go to ipod control>Itunes there are a bunch of temp files and a large file called ipodcontrol and a couple files called playlist but those two were umm, empty. I dont know what any of this stuff is but if i knew how the ipod makes its library that would be a start in seeing if i can somehow get the library back. I know there is a way. I also am sure there are tons of people out there whose tracks have been erased after an auto update or unplug. You can get your music back! It would be so sweet to figure out how to reconstruct the library file too.

I forgot to mention that for you people who have inadvertently erased your ipods, the data recovery program that worked the best for me was called R-Studio.
So anyone know what file ipod uses for its internal library?

  • What files does the slideshow create in Windows

I have just received a 60GB video ipod and am doing some homework before I go and start to load content. I am running Windows XP and have gone out and bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 to manage my pictures. Is this the only Win PC software that can work for creating slideshows? What extra files will this create, does it roll up the photos into a new large file with audio, is it just a pointer file for the ipod to understand where the pics are, what do I need to copy to my ipod apart from the actual pictures and what file do I run for the slideshow? If I have thousands of pictures, I presume I can just create separate slideshow files in the respective folders and then create a playlist of the slideshows? I thought I saw either wmv or pdf as the PC file formats that are created for the slideshows which I was a bit surprised at. Also, does the music I create for the slideshow remain separate or and just pointed to - can I use an mp3 file or do I ned aac (or is this just for video), or does it all get rolled up? Thanks for the newbie slideshow help. I've checked the forum but can't seem to find this info so hopefully I am not just repeating the questions.
    Cheers

I have Adobe Elements 4 I know you can save your Photo Slideshow in wmv format. I love the new "panning" effect in Elements 4, I think that's what you refer to as the "Slideshow Video". However, I think you need to check out Microsoft PhotoStory 3 (a free download from Microsoft website). I'm no Microsoft fan, but honestly, you can create a video photo slideshow/PhotoStory in less than 5 minutes. Unlike Photoshop Elements, PhotoStory 3 is much easier because it uses the "wizard" approach. Check it out. In no time, you can create the video slideshow, save it in .wmv format. Then I use a tool to convert the .wmv file to .mp4 file.
People who asked why you would want to make a slideshow video obviously miss out the latest fun in sharing photos as moving pictures!!! It's so much fun than just watching static pictures with music. It impressed my friends so much!

  • What files can go on IPod when used as External Disk?

I have done appropriate research, and I know how to use IPod 60GB Video to store and download data files, but I am unable to find out what file types it will accept. Are there any exceptions?
I ask this because I just learned that "Notes" will only accept .txt files and not Microsoft Word document file types.
For example, can I drag PDF files into it? Would I even be able to see them on display?
    Thanks!!!!

The reason notes only accept txt files is because they can be read on the ipod, and you can save a .txt file out of microsoft word by the way. When you use the ipod as external Disk, that's exactly what that is, an external disk, and you cannot see those files on the ipod. All you can do with external disk is store files (any kind) and move them to another computer.

  • What files does iTunes install in Windows 7?

I am trouble-shooting a friend's Dell, running the 64-bit Windows 7. He is worried that his iTunes installation is faulty, and that he may lose access to his extensive music and podcast library. I am looking for a list of which files get installed - and where - when a fresh version of iTunes is installed under Windows 7. This MAY help isolate and rectify his problem.
    Can anyone help with this?
Thanks in advance for your time.
    Rick

Far too many for me to document. If there is a problem with iTunes reinstall it. Reinstalling iTunes should not affect the library, but back it up anyway. See this User Tip for an effective backup strategy.
