What good are tabs if links open in a new window?

I seem to be gradually switching to all Apple: first the computer, then to Mail from Thunderbird, then iWork from OpenOffice, now I'm giving Safari a try, and I'm puzzled: there seems to be no way to get links to open in a new page.
At least when I selected what I thought was that option I has no effect. And what I thought applied to that option has the curious explanation that it applies only to links opened from other applications.
What purpose then is served by tabs.
Thanks,
Eric Weir

Go to System Preferences >> Mouse.
Set the scroll wheel to Button 3. Now when you mouse over a link, hit the scroll as a button, the link will now open in a new tab.
I agree with the OP, why can't we have the option like we did/do with Firefox?

• How do I make all links open in a new window?

I have some RSS feeds on my website.  If you click one of their headlines it takes you to that source to read the story.  Is there a way to make all hyper links on a webpage open in a new window?  If not, is there a way to make the individual links open in a new window?  The website is http://www.businessfixer.net/articles

Mark,
Target: e.g. <a href=”#” target=”_blank”> is deprecated (outdated) code.  Strict doc types will not pass validation.
OP,
Most people know how to use their browsers BACK button to return to a site.  Or better yet, right click on links to open them inside new tabs or windows.  This should almost always be a user's decision and not a web designer's decision.
If you have all links open in new windows/tabs, In no time at all, user's browser will be stuffed with them which is ugly and can diminish browser performance.
If you need to open a new window on SELECT links, use the Behaviors Panel, press the Plus sign (+) and select Open Browser Window.  Repeat this for all links you want opened in new windows.

• Why did in the right-click menu the "open in a new tab" and the "open in a new window" -buttons change places? And can you change it back?

With the Firefox 4 RC, the "open in a new tab" and the "open in a new window" -buttons have changed places. It's quite annoying because I normally do it without even looking at it, but now it always opens in a new window instead of a new tab. Is it possible to change it back? Maybe in your own settings?

You can use the menu editor extension to rearrange menu items - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/menu-editor

• Firefox 15.0.1 stops responding (100% cpu) when a link opens in a new window.

Whenever I click a link that is designed to open in a new window Firefox goes straight to 100% cpu usage and I have to go through the Windows "end now" sequence to close the program. I've tried opening one of the links in a new window but I think it was done in java not html (not sure if all the links are java when this happens as that's the only one I've tested). Not sure what details someone might need but this is on my Mom's older laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition Ver. 2002 Service Pack 2. Hmmm just saw the SP2 will try to update and see what that does though I don't think that's the issue.

So what is happening or not happening now ? The problem computer is your Moms, but I assume your own computer works ok. Have you tried that on the same internet connection as your Mom uses & visiting the same sites?
Also try Internet Explorer. If that is also very slow the problem may not lie with Firefox.
I suggest you try the Firefox Reset feature on your Mom's computer,
* BUT first of all
**make a note of the software extensions that are in use, and bookmark their download and support sites.
** back up the Firefox profile Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles
* follow the instructions in the following article, after reading the caution about what will be lost

• Links open with a new window help

I'm trying make my links on my website open with a new window. This way the customer won't have to find his way back to the site. I found this thread-http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=339861
It looks to be pretty helpful but I can't figure out how to edit the html file after I published it. Any suggestions?

Welcome ny854
You might want to try using an html editor like Taco HTML Edit to open html files, I find it makes them much easier to read.
Your file is viewing as a web page because Safari is probably set as the default app to open html files.
What you need to do is press the "ctrl" key when you click on the file in your iDisk, this will give you a menu, choose Open With, then choose the app that you want to open the file with from the list that you see. If you use text edit (launch the app, go to Text Edit > Preferences > Click Open and Save > Check “Ignore rich text commands in html files”).

Fred,
Thanks so much for the reply. Amy way you could elaborate on the "known issue" aspect? Is there another thread I missed? Some sort of Knowledge base article? also, I'm not sure why you linked to the page you did. FF is installed on all my machines and I can of course download the latest version every couple of weeks and push it to all my lab iMacs using ARD, so I'm confused as to why you linnked me to FF's installer page - is there something I can do with the installer that will alow auto-updates that I'm missing/not aware of?
Again, thanks for the heads-up and any further elaboration on either further info on the issue or how I might use the installer to auto-update all my machines will be appreciated.

• Links open in a new window...

I have a rotating banner that I have created and it receives it's image and url info from an XML document. When you click on the image displayed it takes you to the correct link but it opens it in a new window. Is there a way to make the link open in the current window? Thanks in advance!

• New links opening in a new window instead of a new tab?

In my tabs the option is set to open new links in a new tab, yet firefox keeps opening new links in a new window. Any help to get this back to opening in new tabs? I think this has been happening since i downloaded the 4.0.1 update yesterday.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>Safe mode</u>:
* Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

• Since Firefox just upgraded, every LINK opens in a new window instead of a new or current tab. PLEASE HELP

Since install of version 3.6.8, every link I click on opens a new window instead of the current or new tab. No changes in my settings were made. I had no problems until the 3.6.8 was installed.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

I have a issue When ever i click to private browsing All the open windows are close and make one only one window which is private Browsing i don't want this I using windows7 32bit when i have xp i simply open a new firefox window and make them private and later i see the feature add in firefox which is select a private browsing and its automatically open new window(Private Browsing) this is all fine but now in win7 this is not happening when ever i select a private browsing it will close all tabs and make new window Errrr I hate this!! The all tabs are gone i even try to open a new window and make a private it but the other open windows are closing Don't know why is this happening??

Firefox should open a new window if you use Firefox > New Private window and not close windows that are currently open.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

I try dragging the tab out to make a new window but it will not go no where help help help..please someone..! I try everything!

• I can only open up one window with multiple tabs; right click "open in a new window" does not work. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled Firefox with same results.

Just bought a new i5 laptop and am transferring files, etc onto new box. Last night I had two separate Firefox windows up. I downloaded Nexus Ultimate late and rebooted this morning. I had to restart Firefox then, and it did not save my settings/tabs as I prompted it to do when it shut down to reboot.
I uninstalled Nexus and wasted many hours trying to resolve this, including two failed system restores (looks like Nexus is a dirty little bugger) Windows Explorer will open up multiple windows. Firefox will not. Help.

Have you tried: click Firefox button > New Tab > New Window OR CTRL+N OR File > New Window (if using the Menu Bar)
Once open, Firefox locks the Profile that is in use and you can not open another window with that Firefox version and Profile combination using the Windows Desktop icon or the Windows Programs list.

• Content target link opens in a new window!!

hi
i'm designing this HTML website with dreamweaver 8, it's a
frameset devided into 3 frames top frame(navigation) , left frame
(ads) and right/middle frame (content frame) and i have the flash
navigation menu placed on the top frame, when a link is clicked it
should be opened in the same page in the content frame(parent
target) anyway it was working fine untill i upgraded the IE6 to IE7
now it opens in another page (blank target) although i specified in
the flash coding that the link is targeted in the content frame.
getURL("../services_en/services_en.html", "content");
Is there any special tag for the IE7 or what?
Thanx alot

Hi Arun,
       name1.setComponent is for rendering hover menus.
You could do the following.
String navigationAction = "EPCM.doNavigate('"+str3+"',1);";
if (tmpres.getLinkType() == LinkType.EXTERNAL){               strtext =                                   "<a class=urLnk href='javascript:"+ navigationAction +  "' >";
strtext = strtext + disname + "</a>";

• I am using firefox 3.6 due to compatibility with roboform.Firefox keeps crashing and when I click a tab opens in a new window don't want that.

This has been occurring for about 2 weeks.I need a version of firefox compatible with roboform.Very irritating that when I click tabs or links opens in a new window.

Firefox 4.0 up through the latest 10.0 version is compatible with Roboform7 or with the RoboForm Lite Standalone Extension. <br />
http://www.roboform.com/platforms/browsers/firefox - scroll down that page a bit
As far as troubleshooting your Firefox crashes, start with this: <br />
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes#w_get-help-fixing-this-crash
Type about:crashes in the URL bar and hit Enter. <br />
# Middle-Click the hyperlinks to bring up each Crash Report page in a new Tab; each page may take a few minutes to load.
# Then copy'n'paste the URL of each of those reports into the message box here.
# We'll see if we can help you figure out what is causing those crashes to happen.
If you can't open Firefox or keep it open long enough to get the Crash Report ID's, even in the Firefox Safe Mode - see the section entitled - You can't open Firefox because it crashes at startup even in Safe Mode:.

• How do i make links open in a new tab

Hi There,
Can someone please tell me how to get iWeb to set pages to open on a new tab when links are clicked.
Like when someone is viewing my website, I want the links in that website to open in a new tab within the web-browser when someone clicks on them. I know I can make links open in a New window but how do I make them open in a new tab.
Thanks a bunch
Jason

There is no HTML command to open windows in tabs.
Only these commands are available :
target="_blank"
target="_top"
target="_new"
Opening a new page in a tab is decided by the browser preferences.
In Safari : Preferences > Tabs
