What happened to GUI development in Sun Studio 12

Sun Studio 11 had xdesigner more/less integrated with it so you could develop windows (gui) apps. I cannot find anything in SunStudio 12 to enable me to develop C++ gui apps. Even netbeans doesn't seem to be integrated with sunstudio and has to launched/run separately. Am I missing something? Can I no longer create/maintain xwindow apps when using sunstudio 12?

The X-designer that shipped with Studio 11 was already quite old and out-of-date, so we stopped shipping it as of Studio 12. (It's hard to justify paying for new 3rd-party software to ship with a free product.) Design tools are available from various other sources.
Current versions of Sun Studio require a special version of NetBeans -- you can't use the generic NB that you get from netbeans.org with the compilers and debugger. You can of course install the generic NB in addition to the one that comes with Sun Studio, and use it for other purposes. For example, on my system I installed the current NB in a directory parallel to the one used by Sun Studio.
Future versions of Sun Studio will use a generic NetBeans, eliminating this particular inconvenience.

I'm aware of these policies due to a thread I was part of several years ago. The thread started out as a meaningful question, but many people (including myself) decided to add their two cents about "why Apple would do such a thing". We didn't really have any inside information, and would have been under a developer non-disclosure agreement if we did know something. I got several emails from the forum as they pretty much wiped out the whole thread. I actually went to the TOS and reread the thing so that I wouldn't get my comments removed.
I understood what I did wrong immediately, and I take care to try to find accurate, apple provided or other reputable sources of information whenever possible. There a many rumor sites on the internet where I can speculate (if I get the time) about what Apple is doing, or plans to do, or should do.

As to your question about lost work, for many posts that were created after the 17th, we lost the association with the user name. A question, like this one for example, was replicated back from our NNTP newsgroups (comp.lang.labview) and we lost both the user name the post ID. So, we won't be able to record this in your stats, and you won't receive an email notification of my response.
We back up the Developer Exchange nightly. We decide to revert
to a backup from the 17th because our research indicated that this would be the safest back-up to restore.
We're now working on ways to mitigate the risk of the error occurring again.
I do apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this has caused.

In reading the click-thru license, I came across the following in section 5(i):
"Software may contain programs that perform automated collection of system data and/or automated software updating services. System data collected through such programs may be used by Sun, its subcontractors, and its service delivery partners for the purpose of providing you with remote system services and/or improving Sun's software and systems."
Does this mean that the software will phone home to the 'mother ship' and report on my utilization? It seems to be worded in such a way as to be able to send my hardware configuration and other things that I may not want to share with Sun.

Difference between Sun Studio 12u1 and Sun Studio Express...

I've installed Sun Studio Express to get the C/C++ compilers. What is the difference with the Sun Studio 12 suite (which is about 200 MB larger than the Express one)? Also I saw there are patches for Sun Studio 12 (last one Jul 20 2009) that might have a fix for a problem I just reported. How can I install such patches?

Studio Express is a pre-release or beta release. Some features may be missing or not functional. It cannot be patched. It can be replaced by a later release.
Sun Studio 12 update 1 is an actual, supported release, later than the most recent (as of this date) Studio Express. If you install SS12u1 from packages (using the installer GUI for example), you can download and install patches for it as they become available. (Installations from a tar file cannot be patched; they can be replaced.)

Sun Studio and ANSI C compilation

Hello, I have a program developed by a third party and it says i need to have a ANSI C99 compatible complier. Does Sun Studio have ANSI C compilation capabilities? If yes, what is the minimum version on Sun Studio that I should have, inorder to have this compiled. I am new to this OS and C programming. Please help.

Assuming you are using Sun Studio 12, full C99 compliance is the default when running on Solaris 10.
The basic flags you care about most often are about the same as any Unix or Linux compiler:
-c compile only
-g compile for debug
-O moderate optimization
-I<dir> add <dir> to the list of directories searched for header files
-L<dir> add <dir> to the list of directories searched for shared (dynamic) libraries

How to install sun studio 12 under Centos 5???

I am trying to install Sun Studio 12 into Centos 5. The followings are what I did:
1. Download sun studio 12 package by selecting Linex (x86) for Centos from web site and save this package under /var/tmp.
2. I used bzcat to unpack this package by:
bzcat < SunStudio12ml-linux-x86-200709-pkg.tar.bz2 | /bin/tar xvf -
3. I did prepare_system before installation by:
./prepare_system [-d /opt/sun/ ] [-R /var/tmp/ ] [-C | -s netbeans | java | patches | all_patches | jdk_patches | all | print_needed_steps ]
where [-d /opt/sun/ ] is the directory where all missing softwares will be installed, [-R /var/tmp/ ] is the directory where unpacked programs are saved.

According to your suggestions, I downloaded JDK 6 update 10 RC, specifical in Linux platform : self-extracting JDK file named:

I updated my windows 7 and when I did I received a message that firefox is not compatible with windows 7 updates. What happened?

I got a message to update windows. I updated. My computer said firefox was not compatible with update. I then tried to purchase Avast and it basically crashed my computer. I had help in restoring and when system was checked it showed two different firefox downloads that had not succeeded because they were incompatible with my system. I don't know enough about computers to understand what happened. I have a Dell Studio xps with Windows 7. Thank you.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

I currently developing a jsp based web application with sun studio enterprise but sun studio by default does not support j2ee environment, i think it only support to j2SE.
i want to use persistence and enterprise beans with my application but don't know, how to do it with sun studio developer.
i can install the persistence and ejb api's separately, but i dont know whether sun developer will support them
Can any on tell, what is the best tool for web application developement, while i will need to java uml diagrams later on.
i would be grateful, if someone can help, i am really desprate

Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8.1 (built on top on NetBeans 5.0) does support j2ee (and j2se) development.
For developing j2ee applications, both NetBeans (latest version is 5.5, http://www.netbeans.org) and SJSE can be used. For a comparison on SJSE and NetBeans, please take a look at:

GUI tools availabe with sun studio 11

I have used sun workshop v5 for a good number of years and am happy with the GUI based tools I use for debugging C, Fortan and soon Ada code whcih link with dbx and emacs.
I have had a trawl through the website but haven't found what I;m looking for.
so the question is : what are the GUI based tools which I could use with sunstudio 11 which will give similar capability to that availabe with sun workshop v5 ?

I guess the base tools in Workshop 5 you mentioned are IDE, dbx. Sun Studio 11 has all of those functions which are much more far better than Workshop 5. The only missing from Sun Studio 11 IDE is project function. It will be back in next release. Take a look at Sun Studio matrix page to see which function is included in Sun Studio 11. The matrix page does not include WS 5 because this version is 5 years old. Here is the URL

What happens when there is a conflict between develop settings stored in file metadata, and the catalog?

Wondering if someone could quickly help me with understanding how develop settings are read back into lightroom... (I'm using lightroom 3.6) as I've just had a bit of a panic that my mis-understanding of the system might have screwed things up a bit!
As I do all my image tinkering on a laptop with a small disk, I am often archiving directories of images to an old server we have, and then just bringing them back onto my laptop whenever I need them again. I have a single lightroom catalog on my laptop, and I thought (I now think wrongly!) that all my develop settings updates were stored solely in the lightroom catalog on my laptop, and as long as I kept a copy of the original jpeg images knocking around somewhere so that I could restore them to my laptop when needed, that I could always get back to the most recently edited version of my images. Often I copied a directory of images from the server to the laptop, edited them with lightroom, then deleted the jpg files from the laptop thinking the originals left on the server would be sufficient to restore my work later.
However recently just before deleting a batch of jpgs from the laptop, I did a quick compare with the server and was horrified to realise that the files where different, and that changes *are* written to the jpeg files! Looking in lightroom I have the 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG [etc] files' turned on.
My questions would be:
1 - Have I lost work by effectively deleting the metadata from the jpeg files or is it also preserved in the catalog?
2 - What would happen if some develop settings for an image were stored in the catalog, and a completely different set of develop settings were stored in the file - which would take priority?
3 - Have I screwed up and if so is there anything I can do to minimise the damage? : {

1. Lightroom ALWAYS stores the edits in its catalog file.
2. Lightroom ALWAYS uses the edits in its catalog file. The information stored in the JPG is NEVER used to display the image in Lightroom.
3. As long as you don't eliminate the photo from the catalog, you are fine, your edits are present in the catalog file and Lightroom will use those to display the image.

If you have moved the photos to the server, using Lightroom (or using Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders), there's no need to bring them back to your laptop. You can leave the photos on the server, and access them on the server, and everything works properly

Are you talking about Swing graphical development?
If you are just right click on the Java file and choose the visual editor.
