What is a database in Oracle?

Hello,
After installing the XE version, I can start creating users and tables. Could someone please tell me in which database are these tables stored? Or in fact everything in the db server is stored in one database? If so how could I create another database besides that one?

Hello,
You have installed Oracle 10g XE so, you have one Instance called XE.
An Oracle Database is a set of physical files, and an Instance is a set of Memory Structures and Background Processes which manage the Database.
So you have one XE Instance accessing one XE Database.
Else, in a Database you can define several Users / Schemas. When you create a Table it belongs to one specific User / Schema (the Owner).
If you want you can create a specific Tablespace for each User/Schema. By that way, you can physically separate the content (Tables, Index) of each Schema.

What is so good about Oracle Database?

Dear Sir,
The project that I'm working on is using Oracle database. Therefore, I don't have not much experience in other rdbms.
Sometime my customer ask, what is so good about oracle compare to others like ms sql server, sybase, informix, mysql and so on.
So, hope someone can give some distinctive strength about Oracle database. This is important for me as well as customer so that we can understand that why using Oracle database is the right choice.

i use napster to discover new music. if i really like it, i track down the CD. 28k wma's or mp3s or whatever sound pretty bad. you're not right about them sounding like cassettes. i think you are forgetting just how bad cassettes sound. most 28k's i've heard sound better then cassettes, but paying $9.99 for 28k tracks....NO WAY. $3 for 28ks? sure the upside of 28ks over cassettes tho is the fact that you can transfer the files around from player to player and mp3s dont get stretched out in the sun :smileyvery-happy:

Some objects (like synonyms or java classes) can have longer names than 30 chars:
SQL> create or replace synonym empempempempempempempempempempempempemp for emp
Synonym created.though internally oracle will generate short names for such objects:
SQL> select synonym_name from user_synonyms where synonym_name like '%EMPEMPEM%'
SYNONYM_NAME

1 row selected.and not always will the long name be actually usable:

HELP: Problem creating a new database in Oracle 9i

I am having difficulty in creating a new database in Oracle 9i, on Windows 2000. I would be obliged if somebody can go through the posting below and guide me as to what mistake I am making or what is the source of the problem:
I reproduce the steps taken by me.
I have decide the database to be called Mydb. I have made the following directories:

I copied the initoracle.ora file to d:\mydb\pfile\initmydb.ora, and made the following changes to it:

I have executed the following commands (which are in a script file),
1. sqlplus /nolog
2. connect sys/change_on_install as sysdba
3. create database ...
4. ...
When I execute the 3rd command, I get an error message as "ORACLE TERMINATED FORCED" and it will end the session. So when the next set of commands in the script are executed, I got the error saying "DATABASE NOT OPEN".
How to rectify this problem.

We tried to upgrade from 8.0.6 to 8.1.7 with the help of Inst Guides from service market place..the thing is we created another oracle home with new DBSID ither than the old DBSID...when we started the migration using 8.1.7 Data migration tool its not responding after the first phase CHECKING THE OLD DATABASE...
Pls help us in this regard

I have installed unixODBC and a db2 odbc driver. I can connect to the db2 using isql, but oracle comes with this error:

Error while migrate my primavera sql database to oracle database

I have used the migrate batch file to migrate my old database "Primavera V 6.0 SQL" to new database "Primavera V 8.2 Oracle"
the process in my labtop is OK
but in my PC the process hanged on "Creat remaining database objects (e.g. constraints and indexes) " Step
with this error
"Error in Run SQL Script orppm_ins_aux.sql: DatabaseToolException (ORA-02298: cannot validate (ADMUSER.FK_RSRCRATE_RSRC) - Perant keys not found ) "

Best Reagrds,I have not seen that specifically but it appears that not all of the grants were correctly applied.
I would suggest running the schema validation tool which can be found on the knowledgebase as Solution ID: prim75459 as this will tell you what is missing/invalid.
Once you know that, you can pull the neccesary grants from the create scripts located in the cd1\install\database\scripts folder.

Create an Object in Logical standby database in Oracle 10G

I have logical standby database in oracle 10g R2 for reporting purpose.Now i want to create procedure in logical standby which is use to create new temp table in logical standby and contained data generated from select operation on existing table.
Can i create a new user in logical standby database,add new tablespace in logical standby which can insert,update and delete data in standby database base table?
kindly provide me the steps to implement all this.What will be effect if i set guard_Status in v$database is NONE in logical standby?

Hi Shital,
Guard_status protects the data from being changed.
ALL- By default it is not possible for a non-privileged user to modify data on a data guard SQL apply database. This is because the database guard is automatically set to ALL.
With this level of security, only SYS user can modify the data.
STANDBY- When you set this level of security, users are able to modify data that is not maintained by the Logical apply engine.
NONE permits any users to access the standby database as long as they have correct privileges. This is the normal security for all data in the database.
You can change the guard status value from ALL to NONE in order to allow non-privileged users to modify data and Yes you can create user and extra tablespace in logical standby database..this is what the one of advantage of using Logical standby database.

Report Records are Not matching with database(Toad,oracle )

When iam executing one of my report ,it fetches data around 4000,
when I am executing same sql in toad database or oracle , I am fetching 6000 records .
There is 2000 records diff ,we are struggling with this issue from 4 days .
I across verified:
1. I enable and disabled the retrieve duplicate row .. still there is diff in records
2. Universe: disabled controls Limit size of result set to
3. even i tried creating derived table using same sql ,still issue with report data count report

Can you check below things -
1) Max rows retrieved condition in Query\Data Provider properties in your report. It might be set to 4000.
2) May be your rows retrieved are 6000, but in report it is aggregating the KPIs. Can you check what is the row count at database level if you apply Sum(KPI) + Group by.
3) What is the difference between the query generated by BO and query you are running at DB level? esp. the where clause.
Assuming: No record limitation is set at universe level.

By server i mean the computer where oc4j and backend database are running is one one of the client pc not a dedicated server..., these database and 10g dev suite are installed in one of the client machine,
all the clients are using same internet explorer as browser.
no message is being displyed on some of the client machine where these forms are not being uploaded on browser instead it displays as done in status bar without actually showing anything at all...
sir so far as jinitiator or JRE is concered i have seen on the client machine (where my forms are running on internet explorer) a pop up is displyed telling one activex control is required to run this program and click to install it..
after clicking it download jinitiator from server and after installing jinitiator my forms are loaded and start functioning...
what i feel is as i said this machine where oc4j and database is running is one of the client machine so some other clients do not have acess to this machine, so this might be the reason why those clints are not able to run the said forms on the internet explorer.... can it be so... kindly tell..

In Oracle a schema is what a 'database' is in Sqlserver.
And if you would have been aware about the limitations of XE, you would have known you can only create *1* (one) database using Oracle XE.
However, probably you don't need a new database at all, and a schema will suffice.
