What is a good interface to get LE's max # of tracks?

I have heard goo things from folks using the FirePod, but what is a good interface for LE to get the max tracks it is capable of?

Hey tele-player! LTNS!
Well, I am still leaning towards the FirePod, but since I have no immediate plans to buy anything, maybe something new will come out by the time I get to a position that I can actually make a purchase.
My day gig is being outsourced to India, and at my age, i really don't want to go out and look for another job. So I plan to do whatever else I can from home to try to make a living. Plus I am gonna get to play out again And I thought maybe I might offer my services to some of the young bands locally to help them record demos. So, this is a "down the road" situation for now. For that, I'll need to get Tiger as well as the FirePod, and a handful more mics than I have for starters.

  • What's a good book for getting started?

    I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
    Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
    What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

    Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
    Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

    If you need really accurate color, you will probably need to create your own profiles and use aperture for more control over the printing process.  Ctein is starting a series of posts on digital printing which you might find helpful:

    Hello - could you tell me what would be a good interface to record voice/guitar into a Logic Pro project please?  Thanks.

    I don't know about that, I don't own a Phonic, but if you only have to do it for USB, well, then there's no problem and you don't have to do anything, so...
    Also when you say DAW (what does that stand for?
    Digital Audio Workstation; Logic, Cubase, Protools etc are all DAWs. You'll probably encounter this term once in a while...
    I just want to make sure and sorry if i sound silly but I should be able to use Phonic as my interface with Logic Pro without using Cubase?
    Yes.

  • What's a good interface for sRGB colours?

    I'm writing a ray-tracer, which uses Python to define its scene files.  The ray-tracer itself handles sRGB gamma correctly, but I'm having a hard time coming up with an interface that exposes that functionality clearly to the user.  I'll explain with an example:
    Intuitively, one would expect Color(1, 1, 1)/2 to equal Color(0.5, 0.5, 0.5).  But because of sRGB gamma, that's not a half-intensity white.  So two lights with Color(1, 1, 1)/2 would not look the same as one full-brightness light, which would be confusing.
    My current idea is to have two different types for colours: "Color" for colours in the linear space, and "sRGB" for colours in the sRGB space.  Is there a better way, that would hide more of the complexity of sRGB gamma from users?

    I couldn't get the link to work to examine the code, so I'm just working off of assumptions.
    If the Color object stores channel information in a list, iterators might be a natural fit:
    color_1 = Color(1, 1, 1)
    # one-liner using list comprehensions and parameter expansion
    color_2 = Color(*[channel / 2 for channel in color_1.channels])
    # slightly more verbose using an extra variable
    channels = [channel / 2 for channel in color_1.channels]
    color_3 = Color(*channels)
    # using a for loop
    channels = []
    for channel in color_1.channels:
    channels.append(channel)
    color_4 = Color(*channels)
    You might also try having a of_ratio (forgive unintuitive naming class method (alternate constructor) in your Color class:
    # This code is untested, but the general idea should hopefully be obvious enough
    class Color
    def __init__(self, r, g, b):
    self.r = r
    self.g = g
    self.b = b
    @classmethod
    def of_ratio(cls, ratio):
    return Color(*[channel * ratio for channel in cls.channels])
    @property
    def channels(self):
    return [self.r, self.g, self.b]
    # example usage
    color_1 = Color(1, 1, 1)
    color_2 = Color.of_ratiof(color_1, 0.5)
    edit:
    I just remembered, you could do operator overloading.
    Just implement __add__ __sub__ __div__ __mul__, etc respectively.

    Was just wondering whata good laptop to get that wont cost an arm and leg?

    Humerous, hehe.
    In all seriousness, there are a variety of laptops that no doubt suit your needs wonderfully. You can definitely do a search on the Best Buy website under laptops and change the parameters to LOW TO HIGH. That will give you the cheapest laptops.
    If you'd like to know which laptop will give you the best bang for the buck, so to speak, we'll need to know a little about what you intend to do with it? Give us a breakdown on your expected daily tasks - be it merely browsing the web and checking email, or playing games. (If games, which ones? Facebook style or more intense?)
    I'm certain we can come up with something you'll really enjoy, if you'll spend a little time giving us more information!
    Look forward to hearing from you!

    I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5338609?start=120&tstart=0
    If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue.  To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new.  This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings.  Then test it out for a day or two.  If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced.  If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself:  http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription
    If your iPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue.  This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself.  What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.
    But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device:  http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html
    Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below:  "IPSW with iTunes"
    And your done.
    Problem solved.
    I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that no one really seemed to figure out a solution for.
    I hope this helps.

  • What's a good way to do a thread dump into a separate file

    What is a good way to do a thread dump automatically into a separate file.
    Example. I run a script to do the thread dump, but unfortunetly, it goes into my stdout log file with the rest of my weblogic errors.
    Any ideas? I want it in a separate file when I run my script?

    Do a Google search on "Drobo S" "benchmark."  I don't have a Drobo S, only the regular Drobo.  But here's a guy who tested one on Windows:
    http://mansurovs.com/drobo-s-review-usb-3-0-2nd-generation
    This one has it a bit faster:
    http://the-gadgeteer.com/2011/12/31/drobo-s-storage-array-review/
    Do read up on a few reviews of it, and be absolutely clear that interface speed (i.e. eSATA versus Firewire versus Thunderbolt) is NOT the same as the performance of the system.  The Drobo cannot keep up with any interfaces... at least the Drobo and the Drobo S cannot.
    I am not using the FS model which is a NAS.  I am using the plain old "Drobo" which is slower than the Drobo S, but that's not to say that the Drobo S is fast, because it is not.
    The Drobo in theory is really attractive: Dead simple to manage, can mix and match drive sizes, offers you some data protection, etc.  However do note that protected storage is not, in and of itself, a backup.  You need other backups besides just the data on the Drobo.  And, because it's so slow, it's really not a great fit for photo storage.  See this review from a guy who used to think the Drobo was great for that and then appended his review:
    http://www.stuckincustoms.com/drobo-review/
    To be as clear as possible, IMO the BEST backup strategy with something like Aperture (so long as your managed Aperture library is of a manageable size, like < 800 GB), is to get a few small portable Firewire 800 drives and keep vaults on each one.  They are great because they are easy to use, to have with you, are bus powered, and you WILL offsite them.

  • Pro Users - What Type Of Audio Interface Do You Use?

    I'm thinking of upgrading from this cheap usb, and was wondering what are some models/brands people have that they'd recommend? Preferrably something reasonably priced that's still a quality interface (if this is possible)?

    you don't say what your 'cheap usb' interface is that you're currently using.. so it's hard to get any idea how many inputs and outputs you want or need. do you require zero latency monitoring for recording? do you want or need digital i/o? what kind of price range are you thinking? do you have a use for something with good quality mic/instrument preamps or do you already have that covered?
    my general rule is to go for the absolute least number of inputs and outputs that you need. I believe it's a better idea that your money goes into quality sound for the amount of i/o channels you actually will use, rather than buying some box with 36 simultaneous bad sounding inputs. many people work almost exclusively using software instruments and audio files inside the box, and when they record, it's only one source at a time. and yet they go buy a MOTU 828 or something cos they think for some reason you're supposed to have lots of i/o just in case. but if you're never going to record a drumkit, or multiple musicians playing at the same time, you're never going to need it.
    figure out what your needs are first and then narrow down your choice to the best quality units you can afford that provide the i/o you can ever see yourself using. then, ask around to figure out which ones have the best drivers and sound.
    if this is for your macbook, then your best bet is to go for firewire. but if you're also using a FW drive for your audio, you're going to want to be careful they'll play nice together cos they're going to be sharing the same data bus.
    lastly, if you only ever need stereo in and out.. you might want to consider getting a device that just works using the optical i/o of your machine. then there are no drivers at all, and the sound quality can be extraordinarily good if you can afford a converter like a rosetta.. all that money will go into absolute premium quality, rather than buying tons of channels that will just gather dust if you have no use for it.

  • Whats the best audio interface to use w/new Imac?

    Hey now! I;ve just bought a brand new Imac 20"
    and I'm wondering whats the best Audio interface to use w/ garageband? Also firewire or USB. I want record guitar,bass, vocals, etc.. thanks!

    You may want to ask this question in the GarageBand forums.
    USB is cheaper but Firewire is generally better.
    PreSonus is a good brand and I think they are class compliant, so no driver needed - plug and play.
    M-Audio is another popular brand. Sometimes may have driver issues, though.
    But a lot depends on your budget and what your needs are. How many input will you need, etc?
    If just for solo recording then the PreSonus Inspire would be good. For a full band their FP10 (Firebox) is great.
    Check out this site to get you started (lots of great GB info too):

    Also check Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend for interfaces.

    Find My iPhone is good for misplaced iPhone but not good for thief and it was never meant to be.
    You chance of getting it back is very small.
    There are a few things you can try.
    Try remote lock/wipe your iPhone through Find My iPhone.

  • HT4259 I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets block somehow when the Express looks like it's set up and 'green' - no in

    I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2.  But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work.  What does happen is my internet gets blocked somehow when the Express is online and looks like it's set up perfect and 'green' - but no internet connection for anything even though the Extreme is green and the modem is good.  Once I disconnect the Express, everything is good again.
    I've tried LAN, WAN, though a switch, direct connect, Extreme set to Extend the network, the Express set to be an extension.  Most of the time I get an error trying to update the Express.  But when it seems to be set up perfect, the entire house can't get to the internet.  Just when it looks right, it is so wrong.
    If anyone can give me exact steps (e.g., "...from the Base Station menu, select the Restore Default Setting option" vice "...just restore the defaults..."), I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm left to the conclusion that the Express is faulty.  I've been using Airport Utility 6.2 from Mountain Lion on one computer and Airport Utility 5.6.1 from Snow Leopard on another computer (the latter give more control while the former just want you to 'forget' the Express).

    I finally got it working.  I was trying to set it up ethernet.  My biggest mistake was when the new Express came on, I did not select 'Continue' - I went straight to manual thinking that I would get the most setup options in manual mode.  So everything I initially tried always resulted in 'wireless'.  Even when I would update or restore default settings, the Express would not completely restart. Or sometimes I would get an error. So most of the time I had to unplug it.  So when it came back up, none of my changes were retained. But there were a lot of times when everything was green and appeared to be fine. But anytime the ethernet cable was plugged in, no more internet.
    So here's the weird part.  When I finally tried 'continue' (vice manual), I would get 4 options.  One would be 'ethernet' extended.  So I would select it, it gave me green lights, all looked good, and still the same problem.  This is when I got frustrated.  I thought I had exhausted all possible combinations.
    But somehow when trying continue again after another restore, I only got 3 options.  One was the same ethernet extended option (can't remember what the missing 4th one was).  And this time it worked - it gave me the big green circle with the checkmark saying it was successful.  I don't know what I did different, but I know now that it won't work if 4 options come up to choose from.  It will work if only 3 options come up.  And success if only verified by the big checkmark.  Had anyone anywhere said the checkmark declaring success is validation, then maybe I wouldn't have gone down so many rabbit holes thinking it should have been successful.
    As for which Airport Utility I prefer, 6.2 looks nice, but it would just ignore the Express and would want me to 'forget' it and would not let me edit it.  Airport Utility 5.6.1 was the one that I ended up using the most and finally had success with.  It still strikes me as odd that there is no manually way to pick ethernet, it can only be choosen following a 'restore defaults', and only from the 3-option list (the 4-option list had the same ethernet choice, but it no worky).
    Thanks for the response.  I really do appreciate it.
    Aiport Extreme Gen5 - internet access and router
    Airport Express Gen2 - connected via ethernet, extending my wireless
    - configured while connect directly to the Extreme, but now on a switch (16-port hub)
    Using Airport 5.6.1
    1) Restore Defaults from Base Station menu
    2) Following restart, Select Continue
    3) Of the 3 option presented, select 'ethernet.... extend network...'
      - if 4 options are present, may not work
    4) Wait for the green circle with the big white checkmark.
    5) Connected Express to the switch where a cable went to other end of house - works.
    Dead-zone went from 2mbps to 24mbps.
    I probably spent 4 hours chasing my tail in anger.  The correct way took about 5 minutes total.
    Thanks again.

  • How can I use the NI PXI-6508 with Lab View 7? what are the first steps to get started??How can I use the channels with lab view 7????

    I have a 8 slot PXI system with 2 NI PXI 6508 and 1 DMM 4070 in it. I want to get started with programming the digital I/O cards (6508)! How can I use this cards with LabView 7?what is the best way to get started, or where can I get examples showing how to use the several channels?
    Thanks!
    Philipp

    Philipp,
    The best way to get started is to decide if you want to use traditional NI-DAQ or NI-DAQmx. Recently we released NI-DAQ 7.1 which provides NI-DAQmx support for the PXI-6508. In my opinion, NI-DAQmx is more efficient and much easier to use.
    To get started with examples, simply launch LabVIEW and go to Help>>Find Examples. Then expand Hardware Input and Output>>DAQmx and select the appropriate digital group for your application. This should help get you started.
    Please repost if you need addition assistance. Good luck with your application!
