What is best performing approach to report building in my case?

Hi all,
I want to know what is the best performing approach in the case of an overload of the system,
understood as large number of concurrent operations.
Each operation is a query that, in most cases, returns a large amount of data.
I am interested in the approach that not create bottlenecks and slow down, blocks for a long time the system.
The alternatives that I would like more information about are:
1) reports built with the JDBC (JNDI) specifying "java:jdbc/xxxxdatasource"
(taken from the oracle-ds.xml's jndi-name tag) as "Connection name (optional)"
with the query written into the rpt file and runned by Crystal Reports that I think makes a direct connection to DB
and integrated into Java with Java Reporting Component.
This approach has also threads limits, depending on the version of the report engine.
2) reports built with "Field definition only" with the query written and runned into the my application that call the report only through the resultSet to be displayed
(reportClientDoc.getDatabaseController().setDataSource(resultSet, tableName , tableName);)
My concern with this approach is that it seems to require loading all results into memory
and generating the report in one big step.
Is there a way to avoid this? Some-how to page through report data?
I've also read that Crystal Reports can work with any data provider that implements ResultSet.
Is this true? If so, could I create my own custom ResultSet implementation that would let me
page through my results without loading everything into memory at-once?
If possible, please point me to the documentation for this approach.
I haven't been able to find any examples.
If there is a better approach that I haven't mentioned, please let me know.
Thanks in advance

The first option is the best one for performance.  The only time you should use result sets is when you need to do runtime manipulation of the data through your application and is not acheivable in a stored procedure.

  • What is best approach to report building in my case?

    Hi all,
I'm just getting started with Crystal Reports for our Swing-based desktop application.  We need the ability to generate PDF and XLS reports, perhaps later adding web-based dashboarding and interactive reports.  I'm trying to determine the best approach to take with Crystal Reports to fit our application's data.
Our app stores results in a separate database (either Oracle, SQLServer, or Apache Derby).  The result records contain lots of ID lookups to tables in another database.  This makes using straight SQL for reporting difficult as I would like to avoid cross-database queries.  So I'm thinking of using the POJO reporting approach where our app gathers the results, generates POJOs, and then passes them to the report.
My concern with this POJO approach is that it seems to require loading all results into memory and generating the report in one big step.  I've read other posts referring to heap issues.  Is there a way to avoid this?  Some-how to page through report data?
I've also read that Crystal Reports can work with any data provider that implements ResultSet.  Is this true?  If so, could I create my own custom ResultSet implementation that would let me page through my results without loading everything into memory at-once?  If possible, please point me to the documentation for this approach.  I haven't been able to find any examples.
If there is a better approach that I haven't mentioned, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Report Builder 1.0 for SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2

We are trying to implement Ad-Hoc Reporting using SSRS 2008 R2.
First of all, it is very unhelpful that all SSRS books are for either 2008 or 2012, even though SSRS has major changes in 2008 R2 compared to 2008.
Our instructional materials indicate that we should build Report Models to abstract out our databases into terms familiar to our business users.
The problem we are having is the difference in functionality between Report Builder 1.0 and Report Builder 3.0. Report Builder 3.0 is touted as having the modern, ribbon based interface that is supposed to make end-users feel more comfortable.  However,
all the documentation says that end users are supposed to use Report Builder 1.0 for Ad-Hoc Reporting.  And, it seems, that the reports generated by Report Builder 1.0 are not round-trip compatible with all the other reporting tools for SSRS 2008 R2.
The documentation we have illustrates that Report Builder 1.0 is nice for Ad-Hoc reporting, because is based on connecting directly to Report Models, and the end users can directly drag-and-drop entities and fields into their reports.
When we try working with Report Builder 3.0, it seems we must first connect to the Report Model as a Data Source and then build a Dataset query on the Report Model.  Only then are some entity attributes available to be dropped into the report.
If the user decides another source column is needed, they have to go back, edit the query, save the query, and then drag the column from the Dataset to the report.  This does not seem end user friendly at all!
We are also concerned that if we train our users on the seemingly soon-to-be-obsolete Report Builder 1.0, and get them used to having direct Report Model access, that at some point we will have to move them to the Dataset-interrupted approach of Report Builder
2+.  Highlighting this perception of impending obsolescence of Report Builder 1.0 is that in our shop that is starting with SSRS 2008 R2, we cannot figure out how to get a copy of Report Builder 1.0 in the first place.
We just don't see our end users being savvy enough to handle the steps involved with creating Datasets on top of Report Model Data Sources.  So we would have to build the Datasets for them.  But in that case, what point is there in creating any
Report Models in the first place if DBAs are the ones to make Datasets?
As such, it is hard to envision a forward-looking SSRS implementation that has the end user ease-of-use Ad-Hoc reporting that the SSRS 2008 documentation presents.
What is it that Microsoft actually wants/expects SSRS implementers to do?

    Hi Dan,
    Report Builder 1.0
    Simple template-based reports
    Requires report model
Supports only SQL Server, Oracle, and Analysis Services as data sources
    Supports RDL 2005
    Bundled in SSRS
    Report Builder 2.0 or later
Full-featured reports as the BIDS Report Designer
Doesn't require (but supports) report models
    Supports any data source
    Supports RDL 2008
Available as a separate web download
In your scenario, you want to use Report Builder 1.0 in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2, I am afraid this cannot achieve. Report Builder 1.0 is available in the box in either SQL 2005 or SQL 2008. It is not available as a separate client apps and is
only available as a click once application.
    Report Builder 1.0
    Report Builder 3.0
    Thank you for your understanding.

  • How to improve the query performance in to report level and designer level

How to improve the query performance in to report level and designer level......?
Plz let me know the detail view......

first its all based on the design of the database, universe and the report.
at the universe Level, you have to check your Contexts very well to get the optimal performance of the universe and also your joins, keep your joins with key fields, will give you the best performance.
at the report level, try to make the reports dynamic as much as you can, (Parameters) and so on.
and when you create a paremeter try to get it match with the key fields in the database.
    good luck

  • CF8 Report Builder duplicates subreport parameters

I am experiencing this problem running Report Builder under
    Windows XP:
    1. Create a report.
    2. Create a subreport that has input parameters.
    3. Add the subreport to the primary report and define
    subreport parameters.
    4. Save and close both files.
    5. Reopen the primary report file.
    6. Look at the list of subreport parameters for the linked
    subreport
I routinely find that in this scenario, any subreport
parameter that I originally defined has been duplicated, such that
    if I started with:
    varOne - #query.foo#
    varTwo - #query.bar#
Upon reopening the primary report and insepcting the
subreport paramaters list I will see:
    varOne - #query.foo#
    varTwo - #query.bar#
    varOne - #query.foo#
    varTwo - #query.bar#
Which causes errors when I attempt to run the report.
What's the patch schedule for report builder?

This problem appears to be fixed in build 181436 of the
    Report Builder

  • WHERE Predicate line works in Aqua Data Studio, not in Report Builder

I’m trying to get a query working in report builder which will pull data back when run in Aqua Data Studio.
It returns a NULL set when working with the same data source from report builder.
    Here is the WHERE clause:
    --WHERE SYSDATE < :REM_DATE
    -- troubleshooting line (=DateAdd("d", 3, Now()))
    WHERE SYSDATE
    < TO_DATE(TO_CHAR(TPOA.POST_DT,
    'MM/DD/YYYY'),
    'MM/DD/YYYY') +
    3
    AND TPOA.DEST_OTHER
    IS NOT NULL
    AND TPOA.AUTH_STATUS_IND =
    'A'
The commented line works in Report Builder.  :REM_DATE has as its default expression =DateAdd(“d”, 3, Now()), used as a means of troubleshooting.
There isn’t a way to populate :REM_DATE before use because forward dependencies aren’t allowed.
Also tried is this line for the first part of the WHERE:
    WHERE SYSDATE

As well, it works in AD but not in RB.

    Hi Michael,
What's the version of your Report Builder? When you run the query in query designer of Report Builder, have you got any error/warning message?
In this case, I would suggest you can try to SQL Server Profiler to capture some events do further investigation while run the query in Report Builder.

  • Performance: Reports Builder versus Running on mid tier report server.

Folks are wondering why a report takes 15 minutes when running on the middle tier report server, paper layout, pdf output displayed via adobe, versus running the paper layout from a laptop within Reports Builder.
Any thoughts about the performance differences we now face with the 3 tier set up or suggestions on what we might tweak?

    hello,
unfortunately your post did not specify what the difference in performance is and whether you are connecting to the same database and what platform your deployment environment as oppsed to your dev environment is.
there are certainly some performance differences expected if the depoloyment platform is significantly different from the development paltform, but those differences should not be significant.
there are certain things that might cause performance differences (e.g. graphs in reports, using DISPLAY vs. DEFAULT_DISPLAY on unix platforms, etc.) so knowing a bit more about your platform would be helpful.
also it would be interesting to know if you see a similar degredation with other reports or even the test.rdf that comes with the product. last, but not least, have you tried to deploy your report to the OC4J that comes with the developer suite ? if so, do you see timings similar to the builder or more to your app server execution times ?
    thanks,
    philipp

  • What's the best specifications for 27" iMac in order to run Windows for best performance?

Hey there. I'm based in the UK and in the process of saving up for my first ever iMac (the new 27" model starting from £1699) after years of owning PC's and laptops, but now I'm finally fed up with Windows-based machines, they just don't cut it when it comes to performance and workload...etc.
I wanted to pick iMac users on the community to get clear advice on what the ideal specifications I should consider configuring my iMac when I finally get round to placing my order in March/April. I aim to run Windows 7/ or 8 via Parallels as I hear it's very good and from what video tutorials of it I've seen on YouTube it appears impressive to think the iMac can handle this at the same time as running Mountain Lion.
The ram I plan on upgrading myself manually, yes - I've sussed that one that very quickly due to Apple's extensive £400 fee to simply upgrade the iMac to 32GB, Crucial here I come!
...I digress a little. I'm torn between the Quad-core i5 and i7 as I don't want to get something that won't deliver best performance when it comes to running Windows in parallel (or coherence mode as I hear it's called). Below are some specs I've configured on 2 saved iMacs in my saved baskets.
    CONFIGURATION #1
3.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    1TB Fusion Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
    Order total: £2,019
    CONFIGURATION #2
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    3TB Fusion Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
    Order total: £2,299
I'd appreciate anybody's time and patience on this little matter. Thank you.

You don't need to go overboard on your hardware to run windows effectively.  I bootcamp win7 on a late 2008 MacBook Pro with no issues. However, for an intense windows game I boot straight into windows.  If you do not plan on gaming other than an occasional instance by your brother than this should be an acceptable solution.
One caveat is ram which you have already stated your are upgrading.
A general rule of thumb I live by is get the best you can afford now and it will prolong the need to upgrade in the future.  That being said...  The choices you have provided are all good choices.  Preference on screen size will dictate your overall decision, of course.   The need for i5 vs i7 CPU is normally not a factor for the majority of users.  If you need to save some money then by all means choose the lesser configuration as it will handle windows fine.
One place you should consider the upgrade is the video card.  Since you cannot upgrade this after purchase it is advisable to do this now.  Also, the differences between the 675mx and the 680mx are far greater than what the naming implies.
Also, as mentioned in a previous post, the 3TB fusion drive can't bootcamp windows.  There is a hack for the non-fusion version, but I have not heard of anyone getting that hack to work on the fusion drive.   There are other creative options you can implement to make this work, however, it will require an additional investment in some 3rd party hardware.  For a novice Mac user I would recommend the smaller fusion drive and external thunderbolt/USB storage as dictated by your needs in the future.

  • For best performance what's the size of an image to be stored in database?

    Hi all,
can any one tell me..for best performance what's the size of an image to be stored in database?
    is it <256kb  or >256mb?
when i google  we can store image as varbinary(max) and its limit upto 2GB..
    Can anyone exlain it?
    is it performance wise better..
    thanx in advance..
    lucky

Your question does not seem apparently meaningful. If you need to store a 5MB image in the database, you store a 5MB image, not a 200 KB image or a 200 MB image. Business needs always trumph performance.
Not surprisingly, the larger the image the more resources it takes to read and write it.
What is a meaningful question is whether you should use the FILESTREAM feature or not. The cut-off limit here is usually given as 1MB. That is, if your images typically exceeds 1MB you should use FILESTREAM and access the data through Win32
API. If your images are generally below this size, you should stick to regular T-SQL.

  • What's iOS is the best performance for iP4 & 3Gs

    Hi all guys here.
    How are you all guys?
    I'm new here.
I'm now running IOS 4.1 for my both iPhone(3Gs and 4)
But i want the new features.
Can anyone here recommend me what the best IOS for iP3Gs and iP4? ( d best performance )
Without battery draining or make my iphone slower.
    I'm greatly appreciate that guys.
    Trillion Thanks!!!

Doesn't really matter, since the only iOS available for either of your phones is iOS 4.3.5, if you chose to update. Users have complained about every single iOS update since the first update for the original iPhone was released. Fact is, the vast majority of users have zero issues & happily go about their ways.

  • Best Approach for Reporting on SAP HANA Views

    Hi,
Kindly provide information w.r.t the best approach for the reporting on HANA views for the architecture displayed below:
We are on a lookout for information mainly around the following points:
There are two reporting options which are known to us and listed below namely:
Reporting on HANA views through SAP BW  (View > VirtualProvider > BEx > BI 4.1)
Reporting on HANA views in ECC using BI 4.1 tools
Which is the best option for reporting (please provide supportive reasons : as in advantages and limitations)?
In case a better approach exists, please let us know of the same.
Best approach for reporting option on a mixed scenario wherein data of BW and HANA views is to be utilized together.

    Hi Alston,
To be honest I did not understand the architecture that you have figured out in your message.
Do you have HANA instance as far as I understood and one ERP and BW is running on HANA. Or there might be 2 HANA instance and ERP and BW are running independently.
Anyway If you have HANA you have many options to present data by using analytic views. Also you have BW on HANA as EDW. So for both you can use BO and Lumira as well for presenting data.

    Dear OTN,
We have just started using the Oracle Designer Tool and the need for printing out our modeling efforts is eminent. Browsing through the help, we learned that we need a extern tool called "Report Builder" which should exactly do what we need. According to the same help it is supposed to be part of the Oracle Developer program, which we have installed also. But we are unable to find it anywhere, even on your OTN website.
