What is my WSUS server doing?!

Hi All,Rolled out a new WSUS server last week, and I've been running around trying to get all my clients fully updated...I've changed my WSUS reporting frequency from 22hrs to 2hrs via GPO, and this has taken effect, so I can see a clearer picture in the interim, whilst I get everything updated. However, I notice that, for instance, our single remaining XP machine reports to WSUS that it still has 26 updates outstanding... Now, I have installed all updates that have come from WSUS on this machine, and I have forced it to reportnow and detectnow, and I have read the WindowsUpdate.log, which tells me that it successfully connects to WSUS, and finds no updates available. I have also taken the XP machine to Windows Update manually and downloaded ALL available updates (there were 3, not 26!) and it has since reported into WSUS,,,Yet it...

Migrating your database to a new datacenter can be a high-risk and time-consuming process. A database contains state, and can be much harder to migrate as compared to web servers, queues or cache servers. In this blog post, we will give you some tips on how to migrate your data from one service provider to another. The process is somewhat similar to our previous post on how to upgrade MySQL, but there are a couple of important differences.
This is the seventh installment in the Become a MySQL DBA blog series. Our previous posts in the DBA series include Database Upgrades, Replication Topology Changes, Schema Changes, High Availability, Backup & Restore, Monitoring & Trending.MySQL Replication or Galera?Switching to another service provider (e.g., moving from AWS to Rackspace or from colocated servers to cloud) very often means one would...

  • J2EE 13 : what kind of application server?

    Hi,
I m using j2ee 1.3 but i m wondering what kind of application server does it use it? I asume it is the j2ee application server... Is there a plugin for eclipse that works with this AS(application server); I ve installed Lomboz but AS JBoss is supportexd, didnt find anything of AS J2EE or Sun one AS. At work we are using j2ee 1.3 and AS Sun one AS 7(or version 8). I thaught J2EE 1.3 uses the J2EE application server ?

Do you have an Server Definition File in Lomboz for the Sun One Application Server?

  • Does Server Side Targeting need GPO for WSUS server to start?

This may be obvious, but for WSUS Server side targeting, I assume that I still need to use GPO (with AD) to point the client machines at the WSUS Server, before they will appear under the Unassigned group?
Is that true?   Otherwise, i don't understand how the clients will know that they are using that WSUS server.
What exactly needs to be setup for Server side targeting using GPO.   Is it only the WSUS server that needs to be setup, or does Automatic Updates needs to be configured as well.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Gleb:
That's what I thought.  Thanks, for confirming.   So just to make sure I'm clear on this.
    For server side targeting:
I would probably setup the AD GPO at the domain level, so that WUServer and WUStatusServer  values point at the WSUS Server.   Once, those are setup and a sufficient period of time has passed for the policy to be passed to the client workstations,
I should start seeing the workstations appearing under the Unassigned group.
I assume that I would also configure some of the following as well using the GPO, since we will be using the AU for updates, after I move the computers manually to groups.   For example, I would probably configure under AU:
    NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers
    UseWUServer
    NoAutoUpdate
    AUOptions
    ScheduledInstallDay
    ScheduledInstallTime
I would guess that the above items need to be configured whether I'm doing server side targeting or client side targeting.
    Can someone confirm?:

  • What rights are required to connect to WSUS server usig console

    Hi all,
I have a WSUS server installed and it is joined to a domain. Another user from domain needs to connect to this WSUS server using a WSUS Management console. What rights does this user needs to be given on WSUS server so that he would be able to connect to
server and be able to release patches?
    Regards, Darshan G. Parab

What rights does this user needs to be given on WSUS server so that he would be able to connect to server and be able to release patches?
The domain user should be added to the local WSUS Administrators group to be able to approve patches.
I would suggest creating a Domain Security Group, adding the domain account to the Domain Security Group, and then adding the Domain Security Group to the WSUS Administrators local group on the WSUS server. However, while this is a more conformant way to
configure the security, it also requires the user to logoff/logon (to get the domain group SID in the user's account token) and it requires the WSUS server to be restarted (to get the domain group SID in it's computer account token).
You may determine that adding the domain user direct to the group is a necessary short-term implementation, and defer the use of groups until such time as the WSUS server can be restarted (which, given that yesterday was Patch Tuesday, will probably be in
    the next few days anyway).

Hello, we have a Mac and an ipad, the Mac is working and wifi is on and the ipad's wifi is on too, but Ipad Safari can not open the page because it could not connect to the server, does any one know that?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

    Copied from here.
    http://appletoolbox.com/2012/01/server-does-not-allow-relaying-email-error-fix/
    How to fix
If this is an AOL issue, try these: go Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select your AOL.com account > SMTP from the Account Info Page > SMTP from the SMPT Page > make sure that the Server is ON, make sure that the Host Name is smtp.aol.com. Further make sure your username and password are correct and added in the Outgoing Mail server; make sure that Authentication is set to Password and make sure that Server Port is 587
If this is not an AOL email: go Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Accounts >Account Info > SMPT> turn off primary server, turn on other (e.g. AT&T) SMTP server.
Go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your Account > Outgoing mail Server SMTP > Primary Server then turn Server ON and fill in both User Name and Password under Outgoing Mail Server.

Have you checked ALL the settings including the port assignments? Easiest way to get those back to is to delete the email account from the iPad then redo the email account. Usually the ISP providing the email account will have instructions on their web site.

  • Migrate WSUS server from 2003x86 to 2008x64, new hardware, use same name and IP address?

Searching through the WSUS forums and reading the TechNET migration documentation, I have bits and pieces of information to make this a smooth transition...I think. I have a plan in mind but
would like the communities input on what I am thinking before moving forward and having it blowup in my face :). <o:p></o:p>
    I have the following currently:<o:p></o:p>
A single WSUS 3.0 SP2 server, running on Server Win2003x86, using the default WID (susdb.mdf) on the same server. I have SQL 2005 Express installed on this server as well for other services
but this has no bearing on the WID correct?<o:p></o:p>
What I would like to do:<o:p></o:p>
I have a new server (a much better one) that I would like to move WSUS on to, that will be running Server Win2008x64 (I have to setup first). <o:p></o:p>
Steps that I would like to follow:<o:p></o:p>
    1. I will go through and setup this new server with all M$ updates etc... under a new name (ex. wsusnew) and DHCP acquired IP address and then power it down. <o:p></o:p>
    2. Get on my current WSUS server and backup all current WSUS settings, groups, DB etc... to a network location for temporary storage. Then power it down.<o:p></o:p>
    3. Delete the current WSUS server computer object in AD, DNS entry I will leave because my intension is to give the same IP address to the new WSUS server.<o:p></o:p>
    4. Start the new server, static assign the IP address from the old WSUS server to this new server and then change the name of (wsusnew) to the old servers name, which should be ok sense I deleted
the AD object in step 3.<o:p></o:p>
    5. After the obvious restart, the new server will have the same name and IP address as the old server. <o:p></o:p>
    6. Now that the new server is up (with same settings name/IP as old server), I will then go through and install the WSUS role on the server and restore my WSUS information.<o:p></o:p>
    Questions:<o:p></o:p>
    1. Step 2 above, is it possible to do this, without making replica servers? I kept reading about this as I was researching doing this, I would rather just copy the DB and folders and simply
put them in-place on the new server.<o:p></o:p>
    2. Step 6 above, restoring of the data, what is the proper way to do this in the scenarioI described? <o:p></o:p>
Thank you to anyone who can provide me some information.
    Jeff

Thank you for the reply, I will follow and let you know. Proabably be next week sometime before I'm able to try though. So look for a reponse then. Thank you again.
    Jeff
    OR...
You can use the much more simple, much more reliable, and much more proven method of:
Install new server as a replica of the old.
    Replicate.
Configure new server as upstream server.
    Point clients to new server.
Turn off old server after all clients have redirected to the new server.
For everybody that has tried the backup/restore the database procedure described above, they have encounted complications of one form or another.
WSUS has a built-in and fully supported comprehensive replication capbility. use it! :-)

  • Issue Resolving WSUS Server Across VPN

    Hello All,
I have 18 sites connected by cisco SA520's to our main office via broadband connections. I can ping my primary server from the remote sites. I have GPO's that are writing to my remote XP SP3 computers telling them the name of my wsus server http://my-server but they are not logging on the wsus server for windows updates. When I open an IE window on a remote computer and type in http://my-server I get the Cisco admin page A DNS error occurred while opening the page.
The Cisco device is a DHCP server, has my main office DNS and WINS servers IP addresses under the LAN settings. Clients are getting DNS and WINS entries at the remote sites for my main site.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Willis

With the FQDN you still recieve the DNS error and the Cisco admin page is displayed?  When you do a nslookup what IP address does it resolve to and is this the correct IP address of your wsus server?
Is that server being NAT'ed outside?  Is this a seperate machine or does WSUS reside on the DC itself?  Do you have any other services such as sharepoint installed on the same server?  Did you install WSUS on a different port such as 8530?  Did you modify the host header of the WSUS IIS entry?
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;294382
    http://www.wsuswiki.com/WSUSServerFAQ
Check the port of WSUS:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632477.aspx
Verify that WSUS is assigned an IP address in IIS.  Verify that port 80,443, and or 8530 are open in the firewall.
From what you mentioned previously it appears the address is being resolved to the address of the ASA which is why you receiving the Cisco Admin page.
From a remote client do a nslookup and verify that it is resolving correctly.  If it is do a tracert and verify that it is going across the tunnel.  Post a scrubbed running-config.  Also in GPO you can use just the IP address of the server ex: http://10.10.10.15 or http://10.10.10.15:8530.
Is this the only DNS issue you are experiencing?  Is group policy being processed correctly?  Have you checked eventvwr.exe for any additonal errors?

  • WSUS Server settings and Migrating SCCM 2007 Clients to SCCM 2012 R2

I am in the process of migrating a site from SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012 R2.
Whilst doing this I came across the following issue:
The first issue is the workstations are woefully out of date, patch and update-wise, some have never had a patch applied as the branch IT staff are building them from the original disk. The policy is set in the SCCM 2007 client to point the machines at
the 2007 WSUS server, which is not set to deliver any updates to 2007 clients and hasn't been for a while. So as soon as the client is installed they lose the ability to get updates from Microsoft and don't get them from the 2007 WSUS server either.
Issue number 2 is the machines are a mixture of hand-built machines to SCCM 2007 delivered images, the SCCM image is patch using offline patching so they are somewhat up-to-date, but the hand-built machines are not and as there is no standardization on
the Microsoft Update client settings, the IT person on-site sets it to whatever he/she feels like, as it makes no difference once the client is installed and the policy applied.
So, when I come to update the client from 2007 to 2012, the following occurs
The Client uninstalls, and the GPO policy settings for Windows Update are removed.
Depending on the setup of the client initially, some machines are then going to Microsoft for their updates (literally 100s) and although the new client is installed the policy update does not fire to update the Windows Update Policy settings, sometimes
for hours after the install finishes. My thoughts are that it just can't run the policy as it is bogged down by patches updating and, in some cases, rebooting and then updating some more.
As a workaround I have had to go in an physically disable Microsoft Update on these machines, which stops the downloading and eventually allows the policy to apply, after which the machine then begins to receive patches from WSUS in a controlled method during
    maintenance windows.
I have tried a number of approaches, even setting the Global Group Policy for Windows Update, but the install still removes the keys and basically sets Windows updates back to whatever it was set before the policy was applied and stays that way until the
new client is installed and the Machine policy reapplied. This can be speeded up by initiating it on the client obviously, but that would mean going to each client or using right-click tools on each machine, which is not an option.
What I would like to know is if there is something I am missing from my methods or is it just that I have never been on a site with such out of date workstations built in such different ways.
    Any help would be appreciated.

First note that clients do *not* get updates from WSUS in ConfigMgr. The Windows Update Agent (WUA) must point to the WSUS integrated into ConfigMgr (by virtue of having the SUP installed on it) but this is only to make the update catalog/metadata available
to it. Approving updates in WSUS is unsupported for ConfigMgr.
What you've described above is all working as designed although these clients are falling into a gap between the 2007 and 2012 configuration and thus they are reaching out to Windows Update during this gap and installing updates. To prevent this, you
need to disable automatic updates via a domain group policy. This will prevent all automated WUA activity including installing updates from any source automatically. This will not interfere with ConfigMgr Software Updates in any way though.

  • NAC using WSUS server

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to use WSUS Server in NAC Appliance. I can able to authenticate in the network with the clean access agent. But everytime I used the WSUS requirement it pass through from normal login role to temporarily role for remediation. Im using a WSUS server. So it will lookup to WSUS requirement but the problem I cannot able to remediate using it, I got error message. Do I need to allow some ports in the network to make it work? What ports do I have to open? Please see attachment. Thanks.
    Regards,
    Richard

    Richard,
When you use WSUS with NAC, all the NAC agent does is to tell the Windows Update agent to go update itself. Now it depends on the WSUS setting on the client where it will go to check for updates. If you have it configured for MS servers, it will go talk to them. If you have your clients configured for internal WSUS server, it will check in with them.
Here are details on how to set the registry keys for both scenarios (AD and non-AD)
