What is new in Fireworks CS5.1

I see that Fireworks is included in the CS5.5 Mater Collection. Is there any new features in 5.1?  Or is is mostly bug fixes and performance issues?

Here's the list:

  • What's new in the CS5.5 SDK?

OK, well, not a whole lot. But since I went through and diffed it against CS5, I though I'd share. This is from the Mac perspective.
Some documentation reorganization -- getting-started.pdf moved into docs/guides and whats-new.pdf disappeared and we saw:
    ./docs/guides:
    -feature-development-with-scripting.pdf

We lost some build frameworks and gained an overview of the idmltools:
    ./build:
    -AdobeOwlContainers.framework
    -adobe_epic.framework
    -adobe_eula.framework
    ./devtools/sdktools/idmltools:
    +InDesign CS5.5 IDML ReadMe.pdf
It would appear there was a progress bar helper file tossed in with the InCopy applescript scripts for fun:
    ./scripting/incopy/scriptingguide/scripts/AppleScript/userinterfaces:
    +ProgressBar.jsx
We gained scripts for new CS5.5 features and lost LabelGraphics:
    ./scripting/indesign/samplescripts/AppleScript:

We lost the components that are were rewritten from JavaScript to C++:
    ./source/public/components:
    -epubexport

And we gained a whole bunch of header files for bosses associated with CS5.5 features, and similar:

That's about it. A bunch of internal resources in the build frameworks changed, some filenames changed to CS5.5 versions and versionless things, a few PNGs were added:

    Blah.

I wonder if Adobe has looked at how popular the use of plugins is.
It would be interesting to know.
Beyond surveys and market information, at least on the Mac, they have
crash report data (which is skewed!). Each crash report includes
information about version of each loaded plugin. So while they
may not be able to measure the absolute number of users with plugins
installed, they can measure the fraction of users-who-submit-crash-reports
who have plugins installed, as well as the that fraction for any particular
    plugin.
Of course, one can only assume those numbers would be representative
of non-crashing installations, too. At least theoreticaly, most crashes
should be clear about whether a plugin was directly or indirectly
    responsible for the crash...
I guess such things have the danger of running afoul of the privacy
    policy...

  • What's new in InDesign CS5.5 (7.5.1)?

Per the Adobe InDesign CS5.5 7.5.1 Release Notes, the following issues are resolved in today's CS5.5 update:
For a Swedish installation on Mac OS you are unable to insert a line break with Return key on the keyboard. [2884727]
Background PDF export fails for certain files if preflight is enabled. [2824068]
You are unable to change the location of the XSLT file during relinking of XML [2823961]
Excel-specific import prefs are not retained when placing Excel file into a graphic frame [2808639]
Problem accessing shared linked file from multiple InDesign instances running on different machines [2851854]
CS5 plug-ins can be loaded in CS5.5, leading to code conflicts and instability  [2867833]
Any thoughts? Of course we're aware that the plugins one has tripped up some folks.

  • What new can we expect in Adobe Fireworks CS5?

Recently i came across this post somewhere http://keithics.com/blog/article/adobe-fireworks-cs5-preview/224/
so i want to ask the fireworks development team if this is really going to happen someday..Should we expect next version of the fireworks to contain all the photoshop filters and fully functional Layer styles like gradient overlay color change etc..This is such a surprise that fireworks names them as Photoshop live effects yet some of the features are not fully supported like in photoshop..One more thing where fireworks is lagging behind photoshop is its use of brushes..Is it possible that fireworks start integrating .abr brushes of Photoshop in its newer versions?IF all this happens i am dead sure people will quit using photoshop and acquire adobe fireworks as their primary web designing tool...Comments of Jim Babbagi in particular regarding this post of mine will be badly awaited...

    >>Some things I'd like to see Adobe owrk on follow. For example, I like the Master pages feature but I'd like multiple masters because I have common items across many pages but not all. As a partial solution, I find that I can use the Share Layers to Pages feature to good effect but this doesn't work with the Web Layer. This means that if I want to add hotspots or slices to a non-mastered Page then I have to duplicate it on all the other non-mastered pages which can create a lot of duplication.<<
While you can't share the main web layer across pages, you can create a web sub layer and the sublayer can be shared ion much the same manner as regular layers.
    >>I've used both Flash and Fireworks to do prototyping. I find FireWorks a lot faster but it's lacking in things like transitions. I would like to add simple image swaps with a fade transition. A friend recently showed me how this can be done in Adobe Catalyst and that was nice to see how fast and easy it is to use. Sort of takes the nice things from Flash and makes it much simpler to do user interface design. Sadly, that is what FireWorks is supposed to do. I'm surprised that Adobe made Catalyst instead of adding those kinds of things to FireWorks but maybe it's too far to reach.<<
I can understand your frustration, but FW is a graphics app first and foremost. It's got the design tools that FC doesn't have. It was never planned to be a completely interactive tool. At least we can export Fireworks objects and designs as FXG, so we can wire up that interactivity within Flash Catalyst.
    >>So, I may switch to Catalyst for prototyping.<<
Flash Catalyst doesn't have the graphics chops of software like Fireworks, Photoshop or Illustrator though. It's a tool for creating the interactivity more than it is a graphics tool. I see a fit for both.
    >>To bring FireWorks along to that level of easy and power for prototyping, it's a matter of taking Fireworks a little further down the road with usability improvements and expert user types of improvements.<<
I'm sure there will be improvements, but I wouldn't expect Fireworks to become an interactive tool like FC.
    >>BTW, it's sad to see that I can't yet directly integrate FireWorks to Catalyst. It allows importing PhotoShop and Illustrator.<<
Yeah, don't get me started on THAT one. You aren't the only one disappointed about this, but who knows what cool things the future may bring.
    >>I guess FireWorks is the red headed step child.<<
I like red hair.  Seriously, Fireworks is a tool that many people have a hard time understanding - if they've never used it before. I've heard it called Photoshop's poor cousin, or an ImageReady replacement.  From my perspective, it just does so many diffferent things that people have a hard time labeling it. Macromedia never got it right - and they created the software! They spent way too much time comparing it to Photoshop. And it's not Photoshop. At least Adobe has found a useful niche for my favorite graphics app, so I will give them that much.  HTH!

  • Fireworks Help | What's new in CS6

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/fireworks/using/whats-new-cs6.html

Seems like a fair question. It has been over half a year since CS6 was released; it sure would be nice if Adobe would issue a new Extending Fireworks PDF for this version (or at least update the online resource).
My scripting skills are a little rusty at the moment; I can't seem to get this method to work either. I assume that both fw.appTexturesDir() and fw.reloadTextures() were designed to make it easier to add or create new textures via script, and that fw.reloadTextures simply refreshes the list that appears in the Properties panel, allowing a user to select a new texture if one has been added into the Textures directory via a command.
I think you can compare it to a method like fw.reloadCommonLibrary() and assume that no argument is needed.

    Hi All,
I just wanted to point out some new video training, totally free of charge, called, "What's New and Changed in Premiere Pro CS5.5." Todd Kopriva flew all the way to Austria's "Video2Brain" studios to record these detailed tutorials and I think they're very good. Have a look gang, and see what you think!

Thanks, Todd, much appreciated. Such information is always welcomed by all users (at all levels), I'm sure.

  • What's new in After Effects CS5

    Here it is:
"What's new in After Effects CS5"

    > -Still no real 3D or ability to import 3D-files without Photoshop. The
experiences with Photoshop import were not very good with CS4 and I
didn't read about any work done on that in the change list. I hope I'm
    wrong on this one!
There has been quite a lot of work to improve stability, but the overall feature is the same in After Effects. Because Photoshop has some additions, you can make more useful things in Photoshop, so overall it's an improvement. See this post.
-I was really really hoping that this would be implemented in  AE CS5 http://grail.cs.washington.edu/projects/videoenhancement/videoEnhancement.htm After all, there is an adobe employee involved with project. So this  was a bit disappointing for me, but I guess I just have to wait a bit  longer.
I was really annoyed at all of the YouTube videos that said that was going to be in CS5. It just goes to show that you can't believe what you see on the Internet. ;-)
Seriously, though, those folks are just down the hall from me, and they are always doing great stuff---much of which eventually makes it into products. Several of the cool features from this and previous release have come in part from them. So, don't lose hope.

  • Problem with copying and pasting text blocks in Fireworks CS5

Until recently when I copied and pasted a text block in Fireworks CS5, the block would retain all formatting applied to the copied text block, font, size, color, etc. Now, the pasted block reverts to some default setting. Oddly, if I copy multiple text blocks, the formatting is retained as expected, but not if I copy a single text block. I cannot find a preference that affects this, and I cannot figure out what might have changed. The current behaviour is definitely not desired, and is dramatically affecting my efficiency. Anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas how to correct this? Thanks.

Sure, thanks for replying so quickly. My workflow is simple. My problem is limited to copying and pasting within Fireworks. I typically select an entire block with the main selection arrow but I sometimes use this one too depending on the context. I usually just use the keyboard CTRL-C then CTRL-V to paste. Previously (and I have been using FW for years, it's always been the same) it would paste an identical text block directly over the top of the copied one, and it looked exactly the same, same font, same color, etc. Now, it pastes a new block in the center of the document and all the formatting has reverted to what I guess is the default, in this case Myriad Pro 12pt. The behavior is the same no matter which arrow I use to select the text block. I tried Edit>Copy and Edit>Paste, the effect was the same. The Duplicate function seems to work as desired, but I had never noticed or tried that command before reading your post. Using the keyboard to copy/paste is such an ingrained habit I'd much prefer to continue using it as I always have instead of trying to retrain myself. (I'm old, retraining is hard!)
    (Selected block)
    (pasted block)
Most often I copy and paste directly on the canvas, but occasionally will do it within the layers panel. Both now have the same undesired effect. I also tried creating a new document to see if it was a corruption in my current file, but the issue persisted to the new document as well.
    Thanks.

  • Fireworks CS5 crashes often due to buggy memory handling. Will there be a patch?

Fireworks CS5 has a major bug that causes a memory leak or memory "cap" where the application stops functioning once it has used approximately 1.5 GB of memory or so. (I read that 2GB was the cap, but I have never seen Fireworks make it to 2GB).  I only have 10 undos set in Fireworks, so I know that's not the problem. I have searched high and low to resolve this, but it seems like Adobe just hasn't recognized this as a high priority.
I read other discussions about the same problem and I now believe that Adobe either doesn't read the forums or they don't care. I hope this is not the case because I truly love the product. But, for the record, I shouldn't have to:
    - "Limit the number of undos to less than 100" (I have limited mine to 10, but after 6 months of trial and error I have found that to be irrelevant. The errors occur anyway). Don't encumber your users with such an archaic request. This is like a software bug from 1985.
    - "Save, shut down, and restart Fireworks every hour or so". Are you kidding? I can't believe someone on the forums even suggested this. This isn't a solution to the Fireworks bug. This is a work around that does nothing to prevent the error from occuring. Sometimes the error occurs on the very first click after opening a file in Fireworks, after a full system restart. A 5MB file takes 3 minutes to open in Fireworks on my quad-core 3Ghz machine with 8GB of memory. I don't mind that, but I shouldn't have to do it every 30 to 60 minutes. Users shouldn't have to look for "workarounds" to keep a software application running without crashing, especially such an expensive application. I think Fireworks is worth every penny, but only if it runs without crashing.
Perhaps most importantly, I cannot - ever - open two 5MB files in Fireworks at one time. Which makes it extremely cumbersome to impossible to copy/paste content between two files. In fact, I am designing a web application in Fireworks, and I've had to split the app into approximately 15 different files because Fireworks can't handle files bigger than 6 or 7MB.
I had the same problem with CS4 on a different machine, so I know it's not a new issue.  I have Fireworks installed on two PCs, both have quad core 3Ghz processors, one PC has 6GB of RAM, the other has 8GB. Once an hour I have to shut down what I'm working on and wait several minutes for Fireworks to reopen the file.  Sometimes Fireworks just stops responding and won't let me save my work at all. And since there is no autosave in Fireworks, I probably lose work at least once a day.
Please, please, please address this... I love Fireworks, and I'd really like to keep using it.

I am using Fireworks CS5 in Windows 7 to sketch a large site, and it was taking an extremely long time to do anything and seemed to crash on me once or twice every hour. I saved every couple of minutes and could at least rely on my last save being able to be reloaded. However, a few days ago, I lost a lot of work when Fireworks crashed halfway through the save and destroyed the file. At the time, my most recent backup copy that I had on another drive was a day old, so that crash was not only frustrating but hazardous to my project deadlines (needless to say, I've since implemented a more aggressive backup policy). Anyway, I searched for answers and forums about the problem, and I'm disappointed that it seems that it's a common problem for a lot of folks that has been around for a very long time throughout multiple releases of the software. Memory and resources also seem to be a common factor in contributing to the crashes and are also a theme in the few solution responses that I was able to find. I hope that Adobe will respond with a once-and-for-all fix / a much more efficient and stable way for Fireworks to do its magic. I typically have had very positive things to say about Adobe software and was even the one who recommended the suite for my work, but especially as "well seasoned" and *expensive* as the software is, there is no excuse for any major, well-tested component of it by now to be crashing so consistenly and causing so many problems for so many people.
The solution to the crashing that seems to work for me so far - and I hope that it works for you as well: I doubled the size of my swap/paging file to ~4GB and set the maximum to double that (~8GB). Since I did that, Fireworks has only crashed once (only once.. as if that is even acceptable considering the short time since then). It still runs fairly slowly (granted, I'm working on a large project, so I can tolerate that more), but at least I can use it again.
    Hope that helps! Best,
    -j

  • Why does Fireworks CS5 keep resizing images when I paste them?

I am having a problem in Fireworks CS5 where images that are copied and then pasted into a new document automatically re-size and become either very tiny or very large.
I have taken some screenshots to show this more clearly: (this website only allows me to upload images of 450 pixels across so they are not too clear)
Image 1: I have taken a large image and reduced its size to 100x100 pixels (highlighted in red).
Image 2: I have created a new document which is 100x100 pixels in size.
Image 3: I have copied the image from Image 1 (control + C) and then pasted it into Image 2 (control + V). The image was 100x100 and the new image was 100x100 yet when I paste the image it suddenly becomes 313x313 in size and is too large for the new image. Sometimes it becomes tiny when pasted and is too small for the document.
Can anyone help with this matter? Perhaps I am missing something obvious, but I have tried searching for solutions and tried a range of methods (different kinds of copy and paste etc), but nothing seems to help. Please let me know what I am missing!
Thank you for your help! As I said I am using Fireworks CS5. I am using Windows 7. If there is anything else you want to know just let me know.

I don't know what could be causing the copy/paste resizing issue, but here are a couple of ideas that may help with your workflow:
You can create a new document for animation by choosing File > Open..., selecting multiple images, and clicking the "Open as Animation" option. This will place each image file into its own State.
Consider using commands from the States panel fly-out menu—e.g., Duplicate State, Copy to States, etc.—to move objects from one state to another.
Other commands to copy objects within Fireworks include Edit > Duplicate and Edit > Clone. These do not involve the clipboard and may sidestep the resizing problem.
Sometimes with bitmaps, I like to convert them to symbols, as it allows me to resize the bitmap freely without losing the original resolution. (This might introduce extra steps, but it could allow you to correct the image size after it's been pasted incorrectly.)
It's a longshot, but I wonder if it would help to empty the clipboard contents once in a while, to clear out old data.

  • Fireworks CS5 not finding Photoshop plug-ins

I recently installed Alien Skin Eye Candy 6 and Exposure 3 64-bit plug-ins. They are in my Photoshop plugins folder.
When I open the Fireworks preferences and select this as the Photoshop plug-ins folder, the plug-ins are not available in Fireworks. I just get the standard Fireworks list and "Photoshop Live Effects".
I tried trashing the preferences to no avail, and tried on a new user account - and really just can't understand why it is failing entirely to find the 3rd party plugins. Its no big deal - I hardly ever use them... but would still like to have them in the tank should they be needed for any reason.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Cheers,
    Steve Jones
    PS: Running Fireworks CS5 (11.0.0.484) on a MacBook Pro i7 2.66Ghz with 8GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.6.6

Yep, that would do it alright. I thought it was a 64 bit application.
I have contacted Alien Skin to see what the story is with running both 64 bit and 32 bit versions of the plugins on the same machine. I'm assuming that, presuming I can get access to the 32 bit installers, installing them directly into Fireworks own plugins folder will work if the Photoshop Plug-Ins checkbox is unchecked.
I will update this thread when I have a definitive response from Alien Skin.
    Cheers

  • Visibone Swatches, Photoshop, Fireworks CS5.5

    Visibone swatches are great.
Except in Photoshop CS5.5, the swatch set can't be made narrow enough to show it with colors properly oriented.
And it's apparently not availble for Fireworks CS5 at all.
I'd be grateful for any links to importable swatch sets that give me access at least to visibone1 swatch set in a format that aligns correctly in small swatch thumbnails for these programs. Please tell me that Adobe did not just limit us to making swatch sets that are a minimum of 17 swatches wide when 16 used to be the standard... Really?

    Noel,
    Thank you for your reply.
Yes, apparently I missed also the fact that MTSTUNER answered both times, as well, and the answers were both practical. You could also just collapse both drawers or even create a third drawer and pop-up all the required tool pallets instead.
The tool layout is so fluid, it's really hard to guess what will be most useful for one user or another. Different pallets have different minimum widths, and the pallet with the widest minimum width in any specific drawer defines the width of all other pallets in that drawer.
The only way to get the tool pallete to be the correct width for the open drawer is to have it be the only one in the pallet or use
MTSTUNER's suggestion of popping it up temporarily as needed. Either way, it's basically like having it undocked. When it is open and docked in a full drawer, you end up having to create a new swatch pallete for whichever is the widest tool pallete in the drawer, if you can spare the time, or it is worth it to you.
So there are workarounds in Photoshop, and I am grateful for the suggestions, but I wonder why Adobe didn't use the method from FireWorks, where the pallets grow or shrink with whatever the width of the drawer is, at a set swatch pallete width of 21 swatches wide. It probably has something to do with legacy code in photoshop.
    Again, thanks!

because I can not use my CS5 fireworks at all, no matter what I do to try to fix the problemfrom what I found on the forums, fireworks cs5 still will not load its keeps responding on  the load with" A Internal Error has a Occurred" then all function of the fireworks programs stops and I have to use task manager to just shut it down. It was part of the cs5 web premium suite I bought this may for my company, all the other programs works fine, but the fireworks don't load
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the programs to no avail and I still keep getting this Internal error message. a few times it even blue screened my computer. I tried downloading and updating all my system drivers and everything is up to date.
I am running a win XP Pro MEDIA EDITION, with a Pen 4 - 2.6 Ghz with Hyper-Threading, 4 megs of ram, a Nvidia Geforce series 8 which is a 1 gig graphic card that has open GL3.0 and GPU 2.0 , so my system should run this programs with easy but it won’t even load.
forget about trying to contact adobe support about the problem evertime i call them they either hang up on me pass me to someone else until we are disconnected. there is no content in the support portal on this issue that i can find, This thread has been the only resources i have found on this issue and everything sugested on here has not workled.
I have no trouble with the fireworks version of CS4 and the 2004 mx.   thankfully i can still use those programs for my work. but its very frustrating to pay so much for a programs that does not deliever.
so if anyone has a answer to this error message please contact me because i would love to use this new version of fireworks. but its nothing more than taking up disk space on my computer and usless to me at this point.

  • Fireworks CS5 Resizes Window on Startup

    Hello,
Everytime I start Fireworks CS5 on Windows 7, it resizes the application window making it smaller. It reduces the horizontal and vertical size. Is there any way to prevent it from doing this. This is very annoying. It does not appear that the other applications in the CS5 Suite have this problem. The other applications that I have used (Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator) maintain their position and size between sessions.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Dan

I reproduced the behavior and got it to stop - with a penalty
This has been devilling me for a couple of years in Fw CS4 and now Fw CS5.  I don't have a definitive answer yet, but I did get Fw to open without resizing on startup again.
    Problem Started for Me When
I have several custom panels I developed in Flash.  After installing my SWF files and activating them in Fw, I get the resizing behavior.  Grrrrrr.
I Tried These to No Avail
I have found precious few references to this issue anywhere on the web.  Here's what I could find and tried.
Sized the window, created a new layout as Linda recommended.  No joy.  This only seems to control the size and location of active panels and toolbars
Deactivating my panels doesn't stop the behavior.
Deleting only my panels from the Fw folders (both Program Files & %Appdata) doesn't stop the behavior.
So Far This Has Stopped the Behavior
I deleted all Fw Panels (but kept the Command Panels folder) from both:
    Program Files (x86) > Adobe > Adobe Fireworks CS#.# > Configuration > Command Panels
    Users > Username > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Fireworks CS#.# > Command Panels
I restarted Fw, sized it like I wanted and restarted.  So far, so good.
I Put Back The Panels Shipped
The Command Panels shipped with CS5 don't seem to create the behavior.
    Fixing My Panels
I'm going to run some research and experiments with how I export the custom panel movies out of Flash to try to remove the behavior.  If anyone has any tips I'd love to hear about it.
I'll repost what I find.  It may be a few days.
    Cheers!
