What is replacing the Report Model

Hi
Given that from SQL 2012 onwards it is no longer possible to create a Report Model for use in the Report Builder, I was wondering what is taking its place?
The scenario is that I want our end users to be able to create reports using Report Builder to query the live transactional database. I thought I should create a Report Model to help them, but now I'm not sure what to do.
I want to build a solution that we can take forward and not base it on something that is deprecated.
IS the recommendation to move to Analysis Server? If so, what about real time reports.

Think of a Shared Dataset as a view. You can create them and users can use them in the same fashion, though the data is flattened out. A Shared Dataset works through a Shared Data Source and is direct connection to the database, however when
developing against a Shared Dataset, users typically do not have to authenticate like they would with a Shared Data Source.
There really isn't anything to expose the raw schema or specific set of tables like you can with a model anymore that i am aware of other than using a Share Data Source and trying to limit security on the database side.

What happens to the report if the underlying stored procedure to execute the report take atleast 3 hrs to run

Hi,
I have a report which is calling a stored procedure..
Stored procedure exceutes 4-5 stored procedure and then returns the count each procedure it ran using union all statement... The stored procedure takes around 3-4 hrs to run because it is looking at quarterly data and YTD data.
So once the report is kicked off and the procedure behind it runs and runs how will communicate to the report to show the final data... the final data will just be 5 rows with counts.
I think we are running into a issue where the stored procedure runs and runs and then the report goes into la la land and has no clue what to do...
Can you please shed some light on this..

When we render a report, the report would process the following procedures:
Open connections to data source and reading data rows from data extensions for all datasets, means retrieve data. Then process the engine requests, including the tablix, grouping, sorting, filtering, aggregations and subreport processing, means process report.
Finally, render the report, including the pagination modules and on-demand expression evaluations.
So the report rending has to wait until the stored procedure is executed. To improve the performance, we can consider the three aspects:
Improve the performance of the stored procedures. Such as index and join. For better support, I suggest you can post a new thread about this issue in Transact-SQL forum at:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?forum=transactsql. It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.
Simplify the report. For example, avoid including a reference to [&TotalPages] or any complex expressions in the page header and page footer. For more details, please see the following document:

What does replacing the bottom plate of the body cost?

I am wondering if anyone knows what Apple charges to have the bottom plate of the MacBook Pro replaced. When I was at a store, an employee told me that it "might cost, like, uh, forty bucks," in a way that made me think he was just pulling that price out of his you-know-what. After searching eBay for that part and finding no auctions for less than $100, I assumed that Apple would charge something more like that.
It's really irritating that in order to replace two of my footpads, I must replace the whole bottom plate of the body. Apple is really trying to get people to buy the service plan, and then a new laptop when that runs out. Great for the environment. The whole unrepairable Retina Display MacBook debacle is just more proof of that.

Approaching retirement the Apple store job sounds a lot better than Home Depot, but that is another story
When you were at the store you mentioned in your original post, did you have the MBP along and was it a genius bar person you talked with? I have found the sales floor people to have a wide range of actual useful knowledge. The genius bar staff, however, are super.
Why not make an appointment at the genius bar, so you don't have to stand aournd and wait, and talk hard facts about replacement and what options are available. Definitive, quality information is the best thing to have.

Here's what's wrong the rental model

The real problem with the rental model of the Creative Cloud (I won't call it "subscription" -- it's renting software) is this:
When I buy software (sorry, when I perpetually license it), I can save up for an upgrade and buy new software at my leisure. On the rental model, I have to make a payment every month.
It's essentially the difference between fixed costs and variable costs, but with this fundamental point. When I buy, I decide what I pay and when; when I rent, Adobe decides.
Some businesses may cope well with paying a fixed cost every month to Adobe, rather than a larger amount every once in a while. Some freelancers may be able to factor in the "software rent" to their invoices for the work they do.
For others, this will not fly, and if Adobe thinks there is nowhere else for professionals to turn, they are sadly mistaken.

In fairness, "cloud computing" and "software rental" are two different things.
Adobe have not done themselves any favours by calling their new service "Creative Cloud" -- witness all the questions about running apps in a browser and where your data is stored.
True, there is a cloud component to CC, and I accept Woz's point that there are problems inherent with cloud services. Adobe's cloud service has already had outages, which is unacceptable if you rely on it.

Can I save a reports subscription but replace the report?

We need to make occasional updates to reports because of bugs and enhancements. We cant work on the existing reports in our production environment without causing problems for the end users. Instead we use a test environment for updates
Is there a way to replace the production report with one from the test area without losing the users subscriptions?

What's replaced the vpn concentrator?

Greenhorn here, I didn't sit any of this up. We have three remote sites, sister institutions, that we share an app with. We house the app. One site has a vpn concentrator setup, the other two are using a point to point leased line. They have each have a router that connects to a single router. They want to replace the leased lines with a vpn concentrator. Doing the digging I see the concentrators are EOL.
So what's used to replace the concentrator today? What's a solution today to move away from the leased lines? These are all cash poor non-profits. My guess is they'll say look on Ebay for a concentrator if the solution is too pricey.

What can replace the hit counter - preferably one without ads - an html code?

I'm looking for some html code for a hit counter to replace the one from iweb.
The free sources all have ads associated with them.

Statcounter is kind of overkill for most websites much like Google Analytics.

Unable to show all fields from a table\view within a SSRS Report Model for user selection

I recently added a new view with a simple SELECT (with 3 fields) statement to our existing Report Model DSV. I then went ahead to the report model (.smdl) file proceeded with the auto-generation of the new attributes which of course ran with no issues.
I was seeing the three new fields as attributes. But when I went within the existing Perspective to add the newly added fields so that the users see them, one of the field is missing. It is just a VARCHAR field. What would it cause this field to not show up
within a Perspective?

Getting "The Report Application Server failed" when trying to view a report

I'm getting an error pop up:

Any ideas how to fix this?

There is a good process for getting bugs fixed. However, you will have to provide a reliable way of reproducing the issue. E.g.; I can not go to R&D and ask that they fix a bug with a report that sometimes works and sometimes does not work.
I suspect the best way to approach this, will be to actually see the report and try to determine what part of the report may be the issue. To be able to share the report, you will have to create a phone case here:

and discuss this at length with a support engineer.

How do I make a flexible report model

we are migrating all our reports from cognos to ssrs. most of our cognos reports are using catalog which is equivalent with a report model. in cognos, we don't define any relationship between the tables on the catalog files to make it flexible tochanges
on the underlying database tables. all the relationships are defined in the cognos reports. i find that you can't do this in ssrs. ssrsstrictly enforce you to define the relationship in the model. how do i make a report model to be flexible?

I don’t know much about Cognos, but for Report Model in Reporting Services I have something to say. A report model is a user-friendly description of an underlying database, with pre-established data relationships and auto-generated queries. Report models
can be used as data sources for reports created in Report Designer and Report Builder 3.0.
We can set up connection information, define a view of the data source, define a report model, and publish the model to a report server. Then we can use the report model to build reports using Report Builder. For more details about Creating a Report Model,

Large Report Model SMDL files

Hello! I am generating and modifying the report model programmatically and it comes out as big
as 260MB - for over 500 entities with hundreds of attributes in each of them.
When the report model is being uploaded into Report Manager, the ReportingServicesService.exe spikes up to 4GB in memory usage.
Of course, sometimes such an amount of memory is not available and the upload fails with OutOfMemory exception
Also, I cannot open the report model in the BIDS - I get Insufficient Memory exception.
Why would a 260MB model require 4GB of memory?
How can I reduce the size of my model and keep all my entities?

Generally, we always see the Insufficient Memory exception when Visual Studio truly runs out of memory. And if we upload 260MB file to Report Manager, the ReportingServicesService.exe spikes up to 4GB in memory usage is a normal phenomenon. Microsoft
ASP.NET imposes a maximum size for items that are posted to the server. By default, this limit is 4 megabytes (MB). If you upload or publish a file that exceeds this limit to a report server, you receive an HTTP exception. In this case, you can modify the
default by increasing the value of the maxRequestLength element in the Machine.config file.
Besides, a report model is a collection of entities and their relationships that reflects the real-world relationships between business functions and processes. If we want to keep all entities, I think we cannot reduce the model size.

You'll need a 2.5" parallel ATA interface hard drive. Most are 5400RPM, forget 7200RPM drives and slower 4200rpm drives. You don't want a serial ATA (SATA) drive, as that has a different connector and won't work.
One source I've used for drives is Newegg, and their parallel ATA hard drives are at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060000344 2&IsNodeId=1&name=IDE%20Ultra%20ATA100%20%2f%20ATA-6 . Newegg also has many user comments about the drives. Other sources are OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on ATA on the left) . Look for at least a 3 year warranty.
