What is TechTool?

With my AppleCare plan I received a disc called TechTool Deluxe. Can someone explain what it's used for? I have Disk Warrior, is this the same or a replacement for Warrior? I also have an external firewire drive, if that matters.
I will install Leopard as soon as I find out if it will work with my Photoshop CS2, QuarkXpress 6.5 and Office 2004. Any info on the latter?
Thanks

DiskWarrior "repairs" a damaged drive directory & creates a new replacement directory. That's all it does, but it's the best utility for disk directory corruption.
TechTool is also a maintenance utility & includes many useful features.
Google both & you'll understand.

  • IMac sleeping automatically more and more frequently with hudge fan noise

A few days when I was watching a DVD my computer started to sleep suddendly.
Of course I desactivated sleeping option in preferences panel and I also tried to reset the nvram without success.
It was getting worse when I tried to play games (on DVD) : every minutes the computer started to sleep (iMac G5 iSight 20")
Now it is not a matter of DVD, my computer often sleeps every 20 seconds even during startup, it is impossible to work. When I restart there are hudge fan noises which are not disappearing after starting.
The only way to work without the imac sleeping every 20 s is to boot under my safe tech tool pro partition.
I tried to repair permissions, reinstall combo update, delete caches with Onyx, ran techtools tests and as I said reset nvram...without result
If I can get some help it would be nice, I am currently backing up all my data in case...

You are dong the right thing by backing up, it sounds as if your power supply is going bad. What did TechTool report?
Have you tried booting from the install disc and verifying/repairing the drive? Try running the Apple Hardware Test as well, but it doesn't always catch things. It does sound like a hardware problem, if none of the suggestions helps, call Apple.

  • My external HD won't mount anymore on Mac OS, Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, but appears as "media" on Disk Utility. What do I do?

I have this 1 TB Caviar Black drive from WD, I've installed it on an external HD case and have been using to store large files like HD movies and old archive things. Its file system is Mac OS Journaled.
Last year, all of a sudden, it gave me the following error while trying to plug it in: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
I was mad and left it for dead while looking for a way to fix it.
Then, again all of a sudden, it started working again, flawlessly and without any problems.
It worked well for at least 5 more months and then BAM... same error again!
I've tried DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility and nothing... The disk won't show up on any of these apps, except on Disk Utility as a "Media" drive with 0 bytes used and unformatted partition.
    What do I do?
Could it be the external HD case?

It could be a problem with enclosure, but it also could be a problem with the drive itself or the drive is possibly corrupted. I would start by contacting WD tech support.
It may be possible to recover files from the drive using file recovery software:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Otherwise, unless the drive fixes itself like before you should try repartitioning and reformatting to determine if the drive has failed or is now working properly.

  • Using techtool pro found problem with "volume structure".  What to do?

Using techtool pro found problem with "volume structure" and this was not fixed by TECHTOOL PRO.  What do you suggest I do?

I would boot from my gray install disk (put the disk in the drive and restart holding down the C key). Then choose Utilities and run Disk Utility and click Repair Disk. As always, be sure you have a back up of your data first.

  • TechTool Deluxe 691-3100-A - What OS is this For?

I am going through a bunch of old software and found a sealed TechTool Deluxe  CD with an AppleCare Protection Plan logo and the product number 691-3100-A.
According to this page TechTool Deluxe was a version of TechTool Pro placed below TechTool Lite and packaged with AppleCare by Apple.
    https://www.micromat.com/component/kunena/techtool-pro-4/4256-edrive-please-go-a way#5332
This page gives some details from Apple:
    TechTool Deluxe: Features
Any idea what OS this CD is for based upon the 691-3100-A number?

Best O/S for CS in my opinion is Win7 64 bit. Win8 64 bit could work too and is selling for less, but it seems you have to make a lot of changes to make it look and act like a desktop workstation.
Regarding building or buying a decent workstation, call ADK if you want some knowledgeable one-on-one assistance for building a custom fit to size workstation (high end clone builds) and really good after the sale support. If you want to build your own, do some reading on this forum and see what others are doing at various price points.
Also, you do not want to build a "cheepy" 1/3 the cost of Apple PC and expect good workstation quality and reliability. PCs do cost quite a bit less, but you will likely be best served by a high-end PC (i.e. good power supply, nice case, etc.)
You also do not metion what you will be cutting? It makes a pretty big difference on how big/fast your PC needs are for Red 4k vs HD vs SD.

    Jim

  • What is the Windows equivalent of DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro?

Hi - I'm looking for admin/troubleshooting/defragging software for the Windows subsystem of my Mac - basically, the equivalent of DiskWarrior, or TechTool Pro? Let me know.

There's a fairly good list of common keyboard commands in the Help files, but there's a much more complete list here.

  • Techtool deluxe found 7 errors during surface scan... what do i do???

    please help

The steps mentioned by TTD aren't very thorough, especially for a rookie. I only have 1 error and the suggestion by TTD is:
    Surface Scan
    Failed - 1 errors
The Surface Scan test will scan the disk for bad blocks.
Media defects cause this test to fail. You should consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
Can you please walk me through these steps? I have my computer backed up using Time Machine and I still have the box that I bought to upgrade my operating system to Snowleopard.

My 10.8.3 update did not install properly citing an 'Unknown Error'. Now, my Mail and Mac App Store aren't working. What went wrong and how do i fix it ?

I tried this and still have the same problems. If I open Address book or the Mac App Store I get the library rebuild popup and a hang. I created a fresh user and then things are better apart from the printing issue. Its clearly some 3rd party software issue but the crash logs are meningless to me. I used the excellent Etre check app from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck so I have a list of what is being loaded and can compare clean and crashed user info but as I cant work out which of the startup items, launch agents, launch daemons etc that  are causing the problem.
I have eliminated Dropbox, Mac Keeper and Witness, and it isnt related to my exterrnal LED cinema dispay or my external thunderbolt drives, or any USB devices if thats any help to anyone else. Info from Etrecheck follows -

My ipod nano 6th gen fell out of my pocket and the screen cracked badly, is there any coverage for this under warranty? I just bought it a month ago. If not what are the options for getting it fixed? It is pretty frustrating, it fell from about 3 feet out of my pocket and now looks like it was beaten by a hammer.

That's where I would begin, too, with
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.TStatus of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it saysanything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
First we need to determine if the issue you are experiencing with the computer is software or hardware based. Once we have gotten things sorted out there should be time enough to make you decision about keeping or returning it.

  • What is wrong with Time Machine_need help

I run a PowerMac G5 with 2 internals 250Gb drives. The second one is on Do not backUp in the TM options.
Here is the question. I had a 500Gb external for TM, and it kept close to 6 months of backups.
It died on me and I repaced it with a new one (laCie 500Gb) on Oct 10/09 and started a new TM backup program. As of today, my oldest backUp on TM is Feb 02/2010 and I see only 12 backUps above Latest.
I downloaded the Widget you mentioned and the last entry is:

get TimeTracker http://www.charlessoft.com/ or Backuploupe and see what exactly is being backed up every time. it will give you a better idea of why the backups are so large.

  • What is happening with my Macs these days???

Okay, two different Macs, both loaded with TONS of multi-media apps and supporting tech. One is a dual G5 and the other a 17" Macbook Pro. Both with the latest updates of everything I actively use.
So, here are the issues I'm SUFFERING lately. MAIL: Crashes consistently. Almost on every second or third new mail or reply I invoke. Which is subsequently LOSING EMAILS on every crash. Vital emails are going into binary limbo land never to be found again. Please don't tell me I have to go back to using Entourage?!? iLife 08: Had to read through these forums along with a bunch of other users to finally weed out a font issue preventing the opening of the Garageband application and a theme issue keeping iDVD to open. Now I am with less fonts and themes just to be able to launch these apps. The most recent and almost most time consuming issue I'm SUFFERING is Spotlight. I've become quite reliant on using search features both in Spotlight proper and within the Spotlight search fields in applications, particularly within the Finder. Now it doesn't even find files when I do an isolated search on an EXACT filename and direct it right to the folder that the file resides.
What gives? I've been a Mac user for a very long time and can't quite recall such a slew of bugs.
I'm sure I will get people telling me to check the permissions and verify discs etc. I've done tons of this over the past couple of months. I've even implemented the use of such "tools" as Disc Warrior and TechTool Pro. These problems persist!
I'm tired of this Windows like world that I've been thrust into so if anyone has any fixes I am all ears!!!

Have you tried creating a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • What is the BEST way to upgrade from Leopard to Tiger?

My current set-up is noted below. The main "Macintosh HD" is 250 GB's in size and is fairly filled up with programs and plug-ins. (I own Logic Studio 8 and Final Cut Pro Studio 2, as well as Adobe's CS4 Web Premium Suite.)
Prior to doing the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, I wish to ensure that I get back to my current set-up should any problems arise. Off hand, I can think of a couple of options to chose from to ensure a proper backup :
    1) Cloning the current disk drive on another drive in the Mac Pro prior to the upgrade.
    2) Purchasing a new, larger disk drive for the Leopard upgrade and safely storing the original drive containing Tiger.
Maybe there are more ways to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard with a dependable "back-up"??
No matter how I ensure a back-up of my current drive, I will install Leopard as a clean install.
What would be the BEST way to do the upgrade with proper back-up?
Thank you in advance for your time and input.
    Ted

    I suggest the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Persistent surface scan error on techtool- please help

My Powerbook started running slower than usual, so I decided to run the Techtool Deluxe cd I got with my Apple Care plan. I ran all the tests. My result: 5 errors in the Surface Scan test.
I didn't know what to do, so I took my Powerbook to the Apple store Genius Bar. The guy just said I needed to reformat my HD. So, I did the "erase and install" reformat at the store.
But, the genius bar guy didn't seem to know what he was talking about, so after I did all the software updates at home, I decided to run the Techtool Deluxe cd again. Again, the results showed I had 5 errors in the Surface Scan test, even after I had completely reformatted my hard drive.
I had the 3.0.4 version of Techtool, and just to be safe that it wasn't out of date, I installed it on my computer and updated it to version 3.1.2.
With the updated 3.1.2 Techtool Deluxe program, I ran all the tests again.
And STILL I have 5 errors on my Surface Scan test.
Here is a copy of my results (every thing else passed).
    Surface Scan
    Failed - 5 errors
The Surface Scan test will scan the disk for bad blocks.
Media defects cause this test to fail. You should consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
Please help! What am I supposed to do???? (I don't think reformatting my HD will help, because I already did, and still have this problem)
    Thank you!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
When you reformatted the hard drive, did you do an erase and write zero's? That's important because that's what remaps the bad sectors of the hard drive. After booting from the OS X CD, choose disk utility, choose the hard drive, and on the erase tab, choose security options and write zero's. If you don't do this step, a plain erase or erase and install only deletes the index or catalog of the disk contents.

  • What does 'Start up disk no more space' error message mean?

    I use a pre 2009 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Mac OS X.6.3
Error message pops up whenever I shut down as follows: "Start Up Disk has no more space available for application memory."
I have more than 265 GB on my startup disk. Currently I'm running FCP, Firefox, itunes. FCP is running a little slow lately and the system did a gray box crash once a few days ago while I was in FCP. Related?
I ran a disk repair permissions on the start up disk and even a verify/repair. Operation was successful.

3GB is very very minimal. Even more so when you factor in what you are running.
    And quad channel symmetrical memory = 4 x 1GB for starters, or 4 x 2GB.
So you have 256GB FREE on your startup boot drive?
Do you ever clone and erase/restore?
Have you upgraded the hard drive in the last year or two, something new would be faster mainly.
Run disk repair and maintenance from another drive, one that has same version OS X (10.6.3), and ideally with Disk Warrior 4.2 or TechTool Pro 5.
That "gray box" could mean you have directory problems, but that Apple verify/repair can't recognize (or fix).
More RAM, clone the system (SuperDuper, CCC 3.x), repair with Disk Warrior...
