What open-source packages ship with Mac OS X Mavericks?

Hi,
Is there a definitive list of open-source packages in Mac OS X? I notice openssh, postgresql, perl, python, ruby, etc.
Thanks,
Mike

There is nothing new in GPLv3 about proprietary and open source software. Apple would be entitled to include any stand-alone GPLv3 software in current versions of OS X without being required to release any source code. It is the new, anti-patent clauses in GPLv3 that are incompatible with Apple's business model. Since Apple distributes software, it would be required to give up all patents if it used any GPLv3 software. GPLv3 was written specificially to punish Apple for its strong position in favour of intellectual property rights and to favour companies like Amazon, Facebook, and Google that sell services and advertisements using other people's intellectual property.
Open source is not equal to GPL. Apple actively supporta a number of open source projects. That effort is more diffcult due to the viral nature of GPL. GPL is one of the worst things to ever happen to open source.

  • Best way to run open source/GNU programs on Mac

    Hi folks,
I'm kind of new to Macs, coming from the linux/unix world.   I'm working on reinstalling the OS on my macbook (after finding out the hard way that it itsn't prudent to use a case-sensitive file system on a Mac), and thought this would be a good time to ask if anyone has an opinion on the best way to run linux-y programs on a Mac.   For instance, I find myself wanting to use "zim" and keep it synchronized with my linux computers, but I can't get it to install on my mac.   I can see a few options:
    1) run linux in a virtual machine, but this is a problem since I only have 4 GB of memory.
    2) use mac ports, but most of the ports I tried in the past didn't work, and my questions to the community were ignored (I tried to be friendly, but perhaps I came across wrong...?)
    3) use fink, but I gather it is out of date and not really used any more.
So, I'm curious what other people use if they want to use open source programs?   Ideally I wouldn't have to compile each program myself, but maybe that is the best option?
    Thanks.

I think Fink has install binaries (and if it has a ZIM port that works for you, what do you care if Fink is a bit out-of-date as a package manager?).
From my observations of MacPorts.com, it compiles the ported package on your system (so you need to have XCode (free from Mac App Store) installed on your system.  If MacPorts has a binary option, I have not dug deep enough to find it (as I mostly use the minimum to get something I want installed).
The other option is to download the Open Source package and build it yourself.  There are some that think this is the ONLY way to go about it (me I'm lazy and only do that for Vim which I desire specific options not always included in canned Vim packages).
If you want OpenZIM on your Mac and you only use it once in a while, then a virtual machine might be the way to go.  However, if your use of OpenZIM is extensive, then a virtual machine can be a bit heavy weight, adn for that you might want to either find a working port or build it yourself.
Whatever you do, DO NOT replace a standard Mac OS X installed Unix side program with your own.  Put your stuff in /usr/local/bin, or a personal local tree (Fink uses /sw/... and MacPorts uses /opt/local/...), then modify PATH in your shell initialization file.  Replacing standard Mac OS X Unix programs may break Mac OS X maintenance scripts, GUI programs that get an assist from a Unix command, etc...
NOTE:  Chances are you Mac can go up to at least 8GB of RAM, and if you look at Crucial.com you might find it will not cost you much at all (for example, the MacBook Pro I just got was upgraded from 4GB to 8GB for only $43).  With 8GB of RAM you will not notice that you have a virtual machine locking down 2GB.  Also I'm not telling you to spend money, just pointing out possible options should you find your need for OpenZIM demands the use of a virtual machine.
With respect to a case sensitive file syste, if you need one, then create a partition (or perhaps a disk image (.dmg) via Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility) for that purpose (an external disk is also an option).  But as you have discovered Mac OS X and many of its GUI applications have assumptions based on a case-insensitive file system.

  • Can I distribute the open source SWF compiler with my application?

I'm unclear reading the documentation if there is a difference between Adobe's official Flex SDK, and the open source version?
Can I distribute the open source SWF compiler with my application?
I have a flash application that users can change the fonts being displayed, if they supply the fonts in a compiled SWF. I found I can let the user select a font from their computer system, and using the mxmlc command I can easily generate a SWF with the font, which can be loaded by my application so the font will be part of the run time application when played on systems without that font already in the System fonts.
I was wondering if I could distribute the open source SDK so that I could compile these font SWFs for the user so they would not have to get involved in complicated Flash development. The audience is non Flash audience.
I tried using SWFMill but the fonts don't seem to work as they do with the mxmlc compile.
    Thank you,
    Scott Kerr

Regardless of whether or not you 'like' downloading and installing software on your computer, Canon DOES HAVE software available for your specific camera and it IS compatible with recent versions of the Mac OS X operating system. Maybe try that instead of whining here about it not being compatible.

  • What USB speakerphones do work with mac?

I would like to find a USB speakerphone to work with MAC (really for google's Gizmo5 and/or skype). Not sure where to post this, let me know.
All the high end (around $110) USP speakerphones say they are for Microsoft Office Communicator. So, I talked to Polycom about their cx100, and they said it does not work with Mac.
What USB speakerphones do work with mac? Any recommendations?

I am trying to download videos and movies, which file formats are compatible with mac?

Some types of AVIs and all protected WMA and WMV files aren't. If the component needed to open a movie isn't clear, the free MPEG Streamclip will reveal what it is or if it's possible at all.

  • Can't open DNG files created with Mac CS5 downloader in Mac CS4 Photoshop

I recently installed CS5 on my mac but I kept CS4 installed as well.  I notice that I cannot open DNG files created with CS5 in Photoshop CS4.  Bridge CS4 shows the files only as icons - no image thumbnails.  I am able to open these same files on a Windows version of CS4.  Is there some plugin for my mac CS4 that will enable me to access the DNG files created with CS5?  Is there a way to use my CS5 downloader when converting my raw files from my camera to DNG files that will make them compatiple with PS and Bridge CS4?

Well, yes...but you'll need to modify your DNG Converter prefs to allow for that. You''ll need a recent (ideally current DNG Converter 6.4.1 or above) and click on the DNG Converter preferences and select the correct DNG Converter options. Check DNG Converter 6.4.1 (the current version) and click on "Change Preferences" to be sure select Camera Raw 5.4 and later then make sure CS4 is updated to ACR 5.7 (which is the last version of ACR for CS4) However, the changes made to ACR 6.x really should be adopted since IQ for ACR 6.4.x is a lot better...

  • I cannot get Firefox to open on my Apple with MAC OS X 10.4.11, though it downloaded fine.

Hi, yesterday I downloaded Firefox Beta onto my Apple with MAC OS X 10.4.11, and when I try to open Firefox, the pop-up appears which says this application is not supported on this system. I called the local Apple store and they said it should work fine.

Firefox 4 beta requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.
Firefox 3.6.* runs on OS X 10.4 and either PPC or Intel Macs

  • What external drives are compatible with mac g5  osx 10.5.8?

Hello,  I have a Mac g5 osx 10.5.8 and I am trying to copy the DVDs for motu's Mach Five2 to an external harddrive.  I had everything copied to a La Cie external harddrive, but it seems not to be working any more, so I got a Toshiba Canvio 3.0, version 1 tb and then version 1.5 tb, but the DVDs I mentioned won't copy to it.  I get error messages of either 0 or -36, which seems to mean that there is not enough space on the Toshiba external harddrive.  The Toshiba has a 500 GB capacity, and the DVD I am trying to copy is 83.3 GB, so I don't see what the problem might be.  I have gotten replacement dvds from motu, tried and exchanged the Toshiba, used disk utilities from the Mac, and checked all cables and connections, talked to motu technical support and the people who sold me the Toshiba, but nothing seems to work.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  They would be much appreciated.  Thanks, OJ

These are my #1 choice for desktop Macs regardless of processor type. One with FireWire is great for PPC Macs:

Too many "on sale every day" name-brand externals at the local office stuporstore are so Windows-centric that they are often ill-behaved on Macs. I even had a WD external marketed as "Mac Edition" that was nothing but trouble. I tore open the WD enclosure, rescued the decent drive inside, and put it in an enclosure with USB2 and FW800 from the family of units I linked above. Works perfectly now.
