What's the point of a virtual copy if it can't be in a different folder from the master?

When I spotted "Make virtual copy" on the context menu, I thought "Great - I can organize my photos in different ways without wasting disk space by using aliases!"
But when I tried to move the virtual copy to another folder, LR said Nope!
So I moved the master - and the copy moved with it.
What am I missing? I've seen the reference to Smart Collections, but they seem to be based on ratings or flags, not arbitrary subject-matter groupings.
So I created a "dumb collection" (my term, in distinction from the automatic groupings), made virtual copy and copied the virtual copy to the collection.
Then I then went back to the original folder and deleted the virtual copy from the original folder.
It vanished from the collection as well.
Is a virtual copy merely a way to make and save an alternative edit of a photo - but only in the same folder as the original?

A virtual copy is virtual. It is a record of the processing settings you made held in the database. LR never makes changes to the original files and does not create copies of original files (except on import if you so choose). A new file is created on export with the processing settings recorded in the database. The folder structure is irrelevant to LR other than LR needs to know where the file is on your computer.A virtual copy does not make an actual copy anywhere on your hard drive. It takes up no space as it is just a few lines of metadata recorded in the catalog. Hence virtual copy.
The point is that you may require several different versions of the same image file, different crops, different processing settings etc. These can all be recorded in the catalog and when you require the particular version you export it. On export it can be sent anywhere you like.
I would suggest you have a look at the LR manual through the help system (press F1 when LR is open) and have a look at some of the video tutorials in order to understand the basics of LR

Hi Pavan,
Just to add some more valuable information.
Organisational master data : Every company is structured in a certain way. In order to work with the SAP System your company structure has to be represented in the system. This is done with the help of various organizational structures.
Condition master data : In sales and distribution, products are sold or sent to business partners or services are performed for them. Data about the products and services as well as about the business partners is the basis for sales processing. Sales processing with the SAP R/3 System requires that the master data has been stored in the system.
Material master data : In addition to sales and distribution, other departments of the company such as accounting or materials management access the master data. The material master data is stored in a specific structure in order to allow access from these different views.
Document master data : The processing of business transactions in sales and distribution is based on the master data. In the SAP R/3 System, business transaction are stored in the form of documents. These sales and distribution documents are structured according to certain criteria so that all necessary information in the document is stored in a systematic way.
Customer Master Data : or for that matter various business partners, we maintain data for them also called as the customer master data or vendor master data like that.
Thanks & Regards

• What is the "Master Directory Block"

I have an external LaCie firewire drive; when I plugged it in today it gave me a message saying, "This disk contains no volumes that Mac OS X can read" or something. I could then choose "Ignore", "Cancel" or "Initialize". When I clicked "Initialize", it opened up Disk Utility, and I tried Repair Disk. It said 1 volume was repaired and 1 had not been repaired, and in red it said, "Master Directory Block needs minor repair"
What is the Master Directory block, and how do I repair it?

This article, in the section titled "Design", describes the Master Directory block. I would get Diskwarrior or TechTool Pro to repair the disk.

• What does the "master password" do on a MacBook Air?

I was looking around on the privacy settings on my MacBook Air, and I came across an option to set a "master password". This sounded safe, so I set a difficult one that was memorable for me. I'm just curious: What does the master password do? Why would I need one? and When can I activate it?
Thanks

OS X 10.6 and earlier versions
Master Password can be used to reset login/administrator password without using Installation DVD.
If the password is forgotten, try to login to your account and enter the any wrong password 3 times.
"Forgot Password?" box will appear. Click it.
Enter Master Password and the new login password to reset it.
OS X 10.7 and later versions
You can use Apple ID to reset password in the newer version of OS X.
Best.

• Can any one tell me how can I move to a different folder pictures, that I've cloned, without them staying aggregated? They all come together to the other folder and I don't want that- thanks

Can any one tell me how can I move to a different folder pictures, that I've cloned, without them staying aggregated? They all come together to the other folder and I don't want that… thanks

There's more to it than that.
Folders in Aperture do not hold Images. They hold Projects and Albums. You cannot put an Image in a Folder without putting it in a Project or an Album inside that Folder.
The relationship between Projects and Images is special: every Image must in a Project, and can be in only one Project.
Images can be in as many Albums you want. Putting an Image in an Album does not move it from the Project that holds it.
You can make as many Versions from a Master as you want.
What you want to do may appear simple to you, but it still much adhere to how Aperture works. I still can't tell exactly what you are trying to do (specifically: Images don't live in Folders; moving an Image from a Folder is non-sensical).
It can be very confusing (and frustrating) to get going with Aperture -- but it does work, and can be enormously helpful. If you haven't, take a look at the video tutorials on Apple's Aperture support site.
I feel as though I haven't helped you much -- but we need to be using the same names for interface items in order to get anything done -- and my sense is that you still haven't learned the names of the parts.

How can I delter photos in a folder from my Iphone 4s? When I synced the new phone from the Itunes, the photos went to two folders and not the camera roll.

• How can I make an external link (to a different folder) from the main menu?

How can I make an external link (to a different folder) from the main menu?

If the folder is outside the Muse page, you will have to insert manual HTML to define a more complex URL like e.g. ../_stuff for going one level up and then into a folder called "_stuff" The deeper you are in the hierarchy, the more ../ you will have to add to climb up.

• What does the master do if it enters DB_EVENT_REP_PERM_FAILED?

I want to know the bdb master's behavior when getting "DB_EVENT_REP_PERM_FAILED". Does it flush all pervious txns or only the one being committed?

I think the answer to your question is no. But I think it needs clarification.
You seem to be confusing or mixing the acknowledgment and heartbeat mechanisms.
The PERM_FAILED event is only sent when the ack policy is not met. If there
is no such event and the txn commits successfully, then that means the ack policy
was met. The heartbeat checks the state of the actual connection.
If the txn commits successfully, then the ack policy was met. If your policy is one
of those that requires the txn be on the client (such as ALL, ONE (in your case of a
2 site group), etc), then you know the txn is on the remote site when the commit
completes. If that site then goes down, then you may or may not have durability
on that site depending on your txn durability choices (i.e. did you set DB_TXN_NOSYNC).
If the master does not perform any other txns, then it will not get the PERM_FAILED
event, nor will it flush its data.
If the master commits a txn after the other site crashes, but before the heartbeat
expires to notice, then you should get a PERM_FAILED event because the client
will not ack the txn and the attempt to send the data will fail.

• What is the Master Password?

I was checking out the options and going through all of it when I noticed something about a master password. I checked it and what it told me didn't quite specify enough for me to understand. I still don't know what it is. Can you specify in a way I could better understand the purpose of having a master password?

The names and passwords are encrypted with a Triple-DES key that is stored in key3.db and a master password adds an additional level to that encryption.
Without a master password it is sufficient to copy the key3.db file and the signons.sqlite file to a Firefox profile folder and see all names and passwords in the Password Manager.
With a master password that is sufficiently strong and can't be guessed easily or found via a dictionary look up your passwords are much better protected against unauthorized access.
