What to read about MS SQL server ... ?

Hello,
I just need an advice from you folks. I'm QE with some scripting skills. Now I've got an assignment to work with MS SQL 2008. My task is nothing with administration ... and mostly I will have to run SQL query and provide users with the results. Anyway ...
since I'm completely new to databases and to MS SQL as well I'd like  to have some basic knowledge how database is organized, what are schema, system tables and etc.
Could you please point me  to good on-line resource that could provide that info? It should not be sophisticated ... just basic but enough to understand how it works,
Thanks in advance.

Purchase SQL Server 2014 (or 2012) Developer Edition for around $50 (2008 may no longer be available).  Install it.  Also install AdventureWorks2012 sample database.
SQL Server Management Studio is part of the client tools installation.  SSMS is your learning and later working environment.
SSMS Object Explorer provides you access to all of the database objects.

  • What is the difference between SQL Server 2012 R2 & SQL Server 2014

    Hi all,
I am using SQL Server from last 3 years. I started SQL Server 2008 R2. Now I am using SQL Server 2012. I want to change my development environment to SQL Server 2012 R2. But suddenly I saw that SQL Server 2014 is released. I want to know what are the
differences between SQL Server 2012 R2 & SQL Server 2014. Are both those are the same or different products?
I searched through the Internet but I didn't find any article regarding that. So could someone help me to solve this matter?
    Thanks,

  • Reading BLOB from SQL Server 2005 using DB Link from Oracle 10g

    Hi All,
I am trying to read a table's data from SQL Server 2005 using ODBC DB Link created in Oracle 10g (10.2.0.3/4) database. I am not using oracle gateway.
I am able read all data except for the BLOB data from SQL server 2005. It gives error given below when I try to execute query SELECT * from T_TRANSACTION_DATA@sdeslink inside a stored procedure:
ORA-22992: cannot use LOB locators selected from remote tables
Kindly help how to read BLOB from SQL server 2005 inside Oracle 10g.
    Best Regards!
    Irfan

    Irfan,
If you can read the blob data using 10.2 HSODBC then there should be no problem using the 11g gateway.
I recommend you download the latest version which is 11.2.0.3 available from My oracle Support as -
Patch 10404530: 11.2.0.3.0 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATABASE SERVER
This is a full version and does not need a previous version to have bene installed. When installing it needs to be in a completlely separate ORACLE_HOME from the existing 11.2 install.
For the Ora-22992 problem have a look at this note in My Oracle Support -
    Ora-22992 has a workaround in 10gR2 (Doc ID 436707.1)

  • What is exactly STATISTICS in SQL Server

    hi all,
What is exactly STATISTICS in SQL server query optimiser ?
    Thanks
    Selva

Some good content with proper example can help you for sure.
    Link:
    http://blog.idera.com/sql-server/understanding-sql-server-statistics/
Some part of text may give you idea
If there’s an upcoming election and you are running for office and getting ready to go from town to town city to city with your flyers, you will want to know approximately how many flyers you’re going to bring.
If you’re the coach of a sports team, you will want to know your players’ stats before you decide who to play when, and against who. You will often play a matchup game, even if you have 20 players, you might be allowed to play just 5 at a time, and you will
want to know which of your players will best match up to the other team’s roster. And you don’t want to interview them one by one at game time (table scan), you want to know, based on their statistics, who your best bets are.
Just like the election candidate or the sports coach, SQL Server tries to use statistics to “react intelligently” in its query optimization. Knowing number of records, density of pages, histogram, or available indexes help the SQL Server optimizer “guess”
more accurately how it can best retrieve data. A common misnomer is that if you have indexes, SQL Server will use those indexes to retrieve records in your query.
Not necessarily. If you create, let’s say, an index to a column City and <90% of the values are ‘Vancouver’, SQL Server will most likely opt for a table scan instead of using the index if it knows these stats......

  • What is the rule about installing SQL server 2000

I'm a bit confused if which of the two is the best that i can  do:
    1. install MS SQL 2000 to R/3 Apllication Box per box
    or
    2. install MS SQL 2000 in 1 box and link the r/3 Applications form it?
im using SAP 4.6.c. I dont know what should i do... is it REALLY required that the MSSQL 2000 be installed per box (DEV, PRD, DB, etc.)?

    Hi Michael,
it is possible to have just one DB server with different DBs (DEV, QAS, PRD) on it. You have to decide if you install your DBs in one instance of SQL Server or if you install named instances - e.g. one instance for DEV, one instance for QAS and so on. If you have all DBs in one instance they all share the same ressources like processors, buffers etc. That means that your possibilities to tune such a system are limited. Also if you have to stop the instance (e.g. for Support Packages or patches) all SAP Systems are not available.
On a box with named instances you can distribute the server ressources among those instances. For example the DEV instance gets 512 MB of RAM and may use 2 processors. The PRD instance gets 2 GB of RAM and may use 6 processors. You can stop and patch each instance individually.
But if I understand your post correctly you work in an 32 Bit environment. In such a case I would never recommend putting PRD with DEV and QAS on one database server. For DEV and QAS a Cental System (SQL Server and SAP on the same server) is usually the right choice. For production you might want to install the Database Instance on a separate server and the Central Instance on a separate server. For scalability reasons you can then add as many Dialog Instances as necessary.
But always keep in mind, you only have ONE Database Instance per SAP system! You can install many Dialog Instances connected to that Database Instance. That means your database is the 'heart' of you SAP system and should be treated that way.

    Sven

  • The process could not execute 'sp_repldone/sp_replcounters' error for Log Reader Agent and SQL Server Assertion 17066 & 3624 errors in SQL Logs

One of our SQL Server started creating SQLDUMP file and and on investigation I found the error longs are filled with Errors 3624 & 17066. There is transnational replication configured on one of the databases is the LogReader Agent is failing error "The
process could not execute 'sp_repldone/sp_replcounters' on XXXXX".
Not sure if both these Assertion & Logreader Agent errors are related. Before I remove and put the replication, I wanted to check if anyone has experienced the same issues or aware of what the cause.

A system assertion check has failed. Check the SQL Server error log for details. Typically, an assertion failure is caused by a software bug or data corruption. To check for database corruption, consider running DBCC CHECKDB. If you agreed to send dumps to
Microsoft during setup, a mini dump will be sent to Microsoft. An update might be available from Microsoft in the latest Service Pack or in a QFE from Technical Support.

the statement, use DBCC CHECKDB to check the database for structural integrity, or restart the server to ensure in-memory data structures are not corrupted.
    Error: 17066, Severity: 16, State: 1.

External dump process returned no errors.
    Thank you in advance.

You need to determine if this error is a transient one or a show stopper one.
It sounds like your log reader agent has crashed and can't continue.
If so your best bet is to call Microsoft CSS and open a support incident.
It also sounds like DBCC CHECKDB was running while the log reader agent crashed.
If you need to get up and running again run sp_replrestart, but then you might find that replicated commands are not picked up. You will need to run a validation to determine if you need to reinitialize the entire publication or a single article.
I have run into errors like this, but they tend to be transient, ie the log reader agent crashes, and on restart it works fine.

  • Reading milliseconds from Sql server into oracle 10g

    Hi,
We have a very time sensitive pressing requirements to be addressed immediately.
We need to read the date time column from sql server 2008 into oracle 10g.
We have a dblink established between the two servers and have tried to use sql server and sql native client 10 driver to read the dates from sql into oracle. This we are able to do very successfully.
The issue is in reading milliseconds stored in sql server. The millisecond part comes in as 00000 from sqlserver to oracle. These milliseconds are needed to identlfy the unique records.
    For instance
    SQL SERVER Oracle
    source_id source id
    01/01/2012 6:30:35:456 01/01/2012 6:30:35:000000.
Im issuing my query through Toad via Oracle to remote sql server using a dblink which connects using HS ODBC connection to sql server 2008(remote).
We have no control over sql server Db as this is remote third party DB.We just have select access to their tables to bring into our own oracle DB.
Any insight or help will be much appreciated.

    Hi,
Could you please send the following information -
    - what version of HSODBC are you using ? Is it a 10.2 version ?
    - what is the SQL*Server datatype of the column you are reading ?
    - from Oracle could you issue -
    describe sql_server_table@hsodbc
    - what is the Oracle datatype shown for the column ?
Could you also run your tests using SQLPLUS instead of TOAD ? We don't support TOAD and need to know if the problem also happens when using SQLPLUS, to avoid it being a TOAD problem.
Also, 10.2 HSODBC is now desupported and you should be using the 11g Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) which is a direct replacement for HSODBC. To use DG4ODBC your RDBMS needs to be at 10.2.0.4 or higher and DG4ODBC should be installed in a completely separate ORACLE_HOME from the existing 10.2 install.

  • Questions about downloading SQL Server Compact 3.5

I want to use SQL Server Compact 3.5 with Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition, but when I go to "Get It" it gives me two options: to download Visual Studio 2010, download Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 for Windows
Desktop or download Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 Server Tools. Are any of the last two the actual SQL Server Compact 3.5 (or what do they mean with "Service Pack"?) or is there another way to download SQL Server Compact 3.5?

    Hello,
This means it's an updated Version = SQL Server Compact 3.5 including Service Pack; you should download that "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2"

  • Reading Data from SQL Server 2000 Linked Servers

    Hello,
I have a colleague who wants to read data from a OO4O driver Linked Server my FRENCH_FRANCE.US7ASCII Oracle 8i database.
He's got some troubles to read data with "é", "à", and so on. They always replaced by "?"
Since I have ask him to use SQL Developer on his server to see if he has got configuration problems, his PL/SQL queries return "square figure" characters (not the usual "²") instead of "?".
For info, I've said it to use CONVERT(column, 'FR8DEC', 'US7ASCII) but it doesn't work too (also try with 'UTF8' or 'WE8MSWIN1252')
Is there a way with the SQL Server collation ???
How can I solve his problem ???

The select query returns the following infos :
    PARAMETER VALUE
    NLS_CHARACTERSET US7ASCII
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET US7ASCII
My colleague uses the 10.2.0.1.0 client with ODAC 10.2.0.2.20.
His SQL Server linked server is 2000 with the SQL_Latin1_General_CP437_BIN (he tried the use of the distant NLS_LANG option and the no set the NLS_LANG too with no results).
    Thanks in advance,

  • Reading table of SQL server

    Hi,
i want to read a table from SQL server, outside of sap.
How can i do that, without database connection?
I want to do it through webservice but i do not know how to do.
    Answers will be appreciated immediately.
    Thanks.

    Hi Sandra,
    Thank you for the response.
I could able to fetch the document related data by using the FM 'BAPI_DOUMENT_GETDETAIL2' and it is working fine but not returning the file content into an internal table. Today I even able to  find a function module 'SDOK_PHIO_LOAD_CONTENT' to load the file content into binary.
Now, the problem is  to create an attachment to the quality manangement tab of material master. I could able to add a subscreen to it and trying to display the file(s) as an attachment(s).
I have tried 'SDOK_PHIO_CREATE' , 'SO_ATTACHMENT_INSERT_API1' (not for mail attachment)etc. function modules but couldn't able to find the soultion. I also got a file namely 'CA-PLM u2013 Product Lifecycle Management Functional Overview' which talks ablout the DMS Management. But the function modules specified in this doc from SAP AG are used for Document info record manipulations but not the attachments assigned to them.
So, I request you to let me know some FMs which can be used to achieve this attachment creation requirement.
    Thank You,
    Regards,
    Naresh.

  • Experience about resource consumption about migration SQL- server to MaxDB

    Hi,
Has somebody experience about migration MS SQL server (running under MS Windows) to MaxDB (Linux). Right now DB size is 2TB and SAP system is used about 1000 SAP users. I need information how cpu- and memory- consumption will change. Otherwise which requirements have to make for target database especially SAPS and hardware design.

  • What is the process for SQL Server 2005 patch update

    hi,
i have 2 production SQL Server2005  Database servers in cluster ,
what is the process for applying patches.
    Saidireddy

In 2005 you can do it in two ways...
    Method 1 :
    With SQL Server 2005,
when you start installing cluster service pack (or hotfix), it must be launched on the active node(node
that hosts the instance). When installing the Setup will launch simultaneously  "remote silence" on all passive nodes. All nodes in the cluster containing the SQL Server instance are updated in the same time.
Method 2: First you can install in passive node then you can install in the active node, In this way you can save your down time ( If you start in the active node it will check in the passive, and if its installed already then it skips that
and start applying in the active node ), but most of the DBA's follows only first method because they may not aware of this or just they follows Microsoft common method.
    SQL 2008 and Later....
    1.  Apply the hotfix on pasive node N2
    2.  Reboot the passive node N2
    3.  Failover on SQL resource : the passive node become the active node
    4.  Apply the hotfix on the passive node N1
    5.  Reboot the passive node N1

  • Question about MS SQL Server 2012 License on a server (renting/buying)

    Hi,
I am currently paying about $300 per month to the hosting company for the MS SQL 2012 Standard Edition (for 4 cores) on my server, my question is, can I just buy MS SQL 2012 STD outright ( for example here http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/SQL-Server-Standard-Edition-2012/productID.281182400
) for around $3k and stop paying hosting company $300 monthly ?
If I am able to just buy it outright, is it possible to switch the licensing code to the new one that I bought without reinstalling or loosing database?
    Thank you.
