When emptying trash, doesn't empty

This is my mom's macbook she's had about 3 years and when going to dowload off of e-mail it's saying there is not enough space. So we empty the trash and twice now when I've done so it's shown well over 4,000 pieces of trash of course meaning it's not actually dumping the trash at all. Has anyone had this problem or know what to do with it. Help would be very appreciated!

Here's what I do: Double click on the trash can & a window opens up showing all past trashed files. The top rt corner has an "empty" button. Click on it & u will be asked to confirm that u want to permanently delete the files i Trash. Click OK & the files will disappear.

Losing HD space when emptying trash

I've searched the discussions a bit and found several posts dealing with similar problems, but none seem to offer a real explanation or good solution.
For some time the available space on my HD seems to be disappearing, sometimes going from 3GB to 70 MB in hours. This is especially noticeable when I empty the trash sometimes, and the available space drops considerably (sometimes with 1GB or more) instead of increasing.
The available space is restored when I restart my mac, but surely I don't want to be restarting my computer all the time. It's really annoying when I work with programs like Photoshop and I can't save or modify my work because there is no space available.
I have had my mac for about four years now, and only recently started having this problem, though I'm not really doing anything different with it.
I have downloaded and run both Whatsize and TinkerToolSystem as was recommended in similar posts, but I really can't get those programs to clarify/solve my problems. When I run Whatsize there don't seem to be any 'strange' large files, for all I know it may be multiple small files causing the problem. And when I run TinkerToolSystem the thing to do as I understand it is emptying my caches, but they certainly don't amount to the space I'm losing.
A friend of mine told me he'd had the same problem, and it turned out it had something to do with deleting incomplete downloads. But he doesn't remember how he fixed it, and I can't seem to find any useful information on it myself.
So, why is this happening and what to do?

Two things to consider:
First, you do seem to have something running, somewhere, somehow, that is filling-up your disk. Do you have FileVault on? If so, turn it off, at least for a while. It's probably not the cause, but may be making it worse. Is your firewall on? If not, turn it on for the same reason. Are you using Raid? I don't know about it's implementation on Macs, but on some other hardware if you're having disk problems, raid will magnify them also.
I'd also check the logs. It's a bit of a long shot, but there might be a clue there.

Second: the loss of space when emptying the trash may not be what's actually happening. While working with fairly large video files, I've come to the conclusion that a Finder window's "available" space figure is not necessarily updated when new files are created or added-to (as when importing video). But it does get re-calculated when you delete something. So if some hidden process makes, say, 2 gb of files, you won't see that on the Finder window. Then you delete a 1gb file, Finder updates, and it appears that you lost 1gb right then.

Imac restarts when emptying trash

For some reason, my Mac always restarts when emptying trash. All apps closed on last couple attempt. Trash still not emptied. Trying to clean up my files, but it appears I will have to reformat in order to clear clutter. Any suggestions?

IPhoto 7.1 Crashes when emptying Trash!!!

iPhoto 7.1 chronically crashes when emptying trash ..............any thoughts ? I have reinstalled and thrown out the com.iphoto.plist more than once but it still happens.

So I went into a guest account and was able to empty the trash..
In that case try the following;
Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .

It may be a bad preference file other than iPhoto's.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

When emptying trash I get error code -8003. When I get this error I am trying to delete downloaded softeare. Typical file deletion works okay.
This is on an iMAC. Don't knwo why I cannot pick an iMAC community below.

Hi leecastasus;
First thing is to stop using the Mac. The more you use the Mac the greater your chances of overwriting the deleted file.
Get a demo copy of Data Rescue II. The demo will tell you if it can recover the file for you. If it can then you must pay for it to do that actual recovery to another disk.

Confirmation prompt when emptying trash

How can I get rid of the confirmation prompt when emptying the trash? (I'd like to keep it for deleting securely.)

The setting in the "Finder" preferences seem to apply to both regular "Empty Trash" and "Secure Empty Trash" and I don't know of a way to set the two independently.
However, note that holding down the "option" key (⌥) while emptying the "Trash" will allow the "Trash" to be emptied from the "Finder" menu and keyboard shortcut without the appearance of the dialogue.

Trash doesn't empty

I have had my macpro for around 18 months, no problems. This morning, I went to delete files from an external HD. As usual, I highlight the files I want to delete and then under edit, I click on Move to trash as I have done numberous times, the files are gone from the external hd. I empty the trash, it makes the usual noise but the items are still in the trash, I have emptied the trash over and over again, still the items are there. I then started the computer on Disk Warrior to check the computer and repair whatever might be wrong, it found some things that it repaired and then when that was done, I restarted the computer and it does the same thing, anyone have any ideas, suggestions?

Did the free space on the external drive increase when you emptied the trash? If it did, then at least the files were actually deleted but I then have no further help to give you. If not, the files are still there in the trash on the external drive. You may want to try holding down the option key when emptying the trash. This will delete locked files. OSX typically tells you if there are locked files that won't be deleted (and to delete them by holding down the option key when emptying the trash) but maybe there's a glitch and it isn't telling you this time. I often run into locked files on external drives.

What's going on when emptying the trash, the counter goes past zero on the way down and then proceeds into the tens of thousands of negative numbers? I am trying to get rid of back ups on my external disk.

The count going negative is normal, in a way, when deleting TM backups. Not a problem.
If the trash won't empty, hold the Alt/Option key while selecting Finder > Empty Trash... from the menubar.
You shouldn't ever need to delete backups, however. Let Time Machine delete old ones when it runs out of space.

I have set form fields as User required and yet the form still prints/save when empty.

I have set form fields as User required and yet the form still prints/save when empty. I also have an email button on the form but that works correctly by not allowing the user to email the form with the required fields empty.
What script do I need to additionally restrict both printing and saving if the required fields are empty?
You would think that just setting that option would restrict those functions the same as it does for the email button.
Please be specific with your response if you are gracious enough to offer one. I have been searching the forum all morning for the answer to this and I really didn't understand any of the solutions offered to others enough to use those in my own form.

The next question I have is if there is a way to make individual signature fields mandatory if they are digital signatures?
In other words, I don't want the individual to be able to email the form to the next person if he/she hasn't applied their digital signature.

Saving can always be done, even when mandatory fields are empty. This is by design. And that is correct. Suppose you have a big form and 2 people need to fill it out. How can you fill out a first part and then send it to the second person without saving.
Same for printing. Same for your signature fields.
What I would do, is to put a "watermark" on the form that you show on preSave and prePrint if the form is incomplete. Just a static text on your form. Then the user will see that they need to do more. Also, on preSave and prePrint, you can show a warning popup to tell the user about the missing fields. You can then still cancel their action if the user decides not to save/print anyway.

Using Suppress When empty flag on an XSD element

Hi,
I am trying to suppress an element by using "Suppress When Empty" flag on the element (submittedDate) in the Data View builder and following is the query generated.
When I execute the query, it actually hides the whole parent element (Project) instead of just the SubmittedDate.
I am using Liquid Data 8.1 SP3.
I would really appreciate if somebody can help me here.

submittedDate is not affecting whether or not you get a Project element. First make sure you are getting data back from these two calls and also that the results join on PROJECT_CODE.

Trash doesn't go away

I am storing and editing a movie on a LaCie 250 G external drive. When I empty the trash, I don't regain storage space. Example: I just had 10 G in iMovie trash and, shown next to the trash size, 98 G free space. One would think that emptying the trash would bump the free space up to 108 G. It doesn't. In the present case, no additional space was gained. Closing and re-launching iMovie has no effect. In some other cases, an odd but small amount of space is liberated. What gives? How do I get my storage space back?

You need to search
the HD for any imovie related files and trash them in
the Finder trash.
Sue doesn't mean to suggest we can improve on iMovie's trash-emptying routines by going into the project yourself and trashing files. That's not cool. But when your project is finished you can drag the project to the Finder trash to recover the disk space.
The behavior you see, Dave, is the result of iMovie's nondestructive editing feature, which lets us restore any clip to its original, pristine state. Essentially, nondestructive editing lets us recover when we screw up.
Unlike iMovie 1, 2, 3, and 4, iMovie NEVER discards only a portion of a clip's source file when emptying the iMovie trash. The only time source material is discarded in iMovie HD is when we discard the LAST clip using a file. Then iMovie discards the entire file.
Often, however, emptying the trash deletes the clip, but not its source file, so little or no disk space is recovered.
