At various stages over the years, mouse-related iTunes trouble has been associated with driver conflicts. So it might be worth following up on that possibility.
Head to the drivers and downloads page for your model of PC, and check to make sure you're not behind on any chipset and input-device-related driver updates. (And while there, just in case, also check to make sure your BIOS, sound-card/integrated audio, and video-card/display-adaptors are up to date.)
If you're behind on anything, and you update, does that help with the mouse-related iTunes issues?

You cannot boot an iBook from an external USB drive--only a firewire drive. Actually, the drive is just a drive--it is the enclosure that determines USB vs. FireWire. If you could find an appropriate firewire enclosure, you could remove the drive from the USB enclosure and place it in a firewire enclosure and then be able to boot from that. Or you could just purchase an external firewire drive if those are available where you are.
FireWire external drives are quite useful. One option would be to mount the external drive on the good iBook, format it properly for OS X with Disk Utility, and then use a program like Super Duper to make an exact clone of your internal hard drive. This is a popular way of backing up your stuff. You can boot from either the internal or the external. This means that if your internal hard drive were to die, you would have all your stuff on the external, and could run off of that. Since you are already using the USB for backup, it would probably be best to acquire a new firewire drive for troubleshooting and testing if you decide to go this route, since you really don't want to lose your existing backup.
If you did have a bootable clone, you could see if the sick iBook would boot from it or not. However, it may be more productive to pursue your other thread about the boot problem. I see that Richard has joined the thread as I had hoped he would. He actually works on iBooks and is very knowledgeable.
Also, if you do get the second ibook working and want to install OS9, you might want to post a question in the "Mac OS X v 10.3 Panther and earlier" forum. I'm not up on this myself, but I believe there is something about installing OS 9 drivers while formating or something like that. I believe the smart guys on that forum could give you some guidance so that you can avoid the problems you encountered earlier.
    Good luck!

  • Why does my iTunes stop playing when I close the lid on my laptop?

I am playing iTunes on my Vista laptop and my setting are 'do nothing' for both powered and battery use, but when I close the lid iTunes stops playing music. Does anyone know why and how I stop it? Please don't say "don't close the lid..." Thanks.

You have your answer... there is no way to stop iTunes from stopping playing music when the lid is closed.
You can try adjusting the power settings, but if that's not working...there is no way for iTunes to override it.

  • ITunes stops playing and cannot connect to Remote app whenever the computer display turns off??

I have a Windows system with iTunes, and an iPhone with the Remote app installed, through which I use to play music on iTunes. Until recently iTunes would play regardless of whether my monitor was on or not, and I could connect to iTunes with the Remote app regardless of the monitor state. Now, however, after updating both iTunes and Remote with the new versions that came out around the time of the iPhone 4S release, whenever my computer turns off my monitor, iTunes stops playing at the end of the current song and the Remote app cannot find iTunes. This is not a system sleep state, I just have the power options set to turn off the monitor after 15 minutes of inactivity. Sleep and hibernate are disabled on the system and always have been, expressly for the purpose of allowing iTunes playback via Remote. If I jiggle the mouse and the system turns the monitor back on then I can manually reenable playback, and Remote can connect to iTunes again. I can't find any setting in Preferences that would control this. How do I fix this? Thanks.

I'm so glad someone else is having this problem.  I am in exactly the same situation!
    1. Windows Vista
    2. Upgraded iTunes to 10.5 and upgraded remote with iOS 5
    3. My computer has never been set to sleep, but the monitor turns off after 20 mins.
    4. If the monitor goes to sleep, itunes stops streaming music and Remote can't connect to it
    5. If I change my monitor off time to 1 hour, then in 1 hour itunes will stop streaming - it is ABSOLUTELY connected to the monitor sleeping.  Almost like iTunes can't connect to the network the the monitor is off.
Please help!  I have been using remote for a year and this didn't happen until I upgraded to iTunes 10.5.

  • Itunes stops playing and the screen goes dark

Hi, I have macbook pro 13" and had never experienced this until yesterday and today. The itunes stops playing music, the screen goes dark and it's still charging. Has anyone experienced it?

Boot from you install disc, run Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing.

  • Itunes stops playing on Windows 7

I have just installed the most recent Itunes 64 bit for Windows 7 (10.6.1.7)
Itunes stops playing after about 5 songs if there is nothing else running. If there is another program running, it happens after a minute.
Everything seems to work except music playback. The play/pause command can be clicked but the progress bar won't move and no audio plays.
The problem also occurs when Itunes is started in Safe Mode and also when a new library is created.
I must close and restart to hear music another 4-5 songs before the situation repeats.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Music purchased and downloaded from iTunes will not play in the Windows Media Player.
Try re downloading the album >
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • ITunes Stops Playing Partway Through a Song, but Isn't Paused

First, the short version of the problem.  iTunes will stop partway through a song (not at the same place each time and it happens with any song) but it doesn't pause the song, it looks like it is playing, the icon in the library shows that it's playing, and the play/pause button shows 'pause' (as in it is playing now so the button turns to the 'pause' button) but yet the song isn't playing and the song track bar isn't progressing.
Now on to what steps we've tried that haven't work.
    1) Reinstalling iTunes
    2) Moving the music library to another hard drive
    3) Uninstalling iTunes, re-installing, and then only loading 1 song in
    4) Reinstalling Windows
Here's a bit more detail on the problem.  Movies play in iTunes with no problems.  We can sync an iPhone and an iPad with no problems.  When the song stops playing, hitting the pause button and then hitting play again, even repeatedly, doesn't do anything - the song still doesn't play.  Double clicking on another song to start it playing doesn't work.  Oddly enough, double clicking on several songs in quick succession out of frustration does sometimes (but not always) start one of those songs playing but it too will eventually stop playing in the same way.  Songs generally stop at around 20-30 seconds but some get over a minute  and on rare occasions a couple songs in a row will play before a song finally stops playing.  This problem started when we added another hard drive to this computer and moved the music library for one hard drive to another - thus the suspicion that moving the music library back where it was or to some other hard drive might help.  Even with a fresh install of Windows and iTunes with just one song (in its usual place under My Music on the C Drive) still have this problem.
I'm at a loss as to what to even try next.  Anyone else ever have a similar problem?  Any ideas on what could cause such an odd problem?

This was happening to me since I updated to itunes 10.
Here's a solution I found and so far, it seems to work.
    • quit itunes
    • Go to your user finder > library > preferences
Drag the following 3 files to your desktop:
    • com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
    • com.apple.iTunes.plist
    • com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
Restart your computer. Restart itunes. You can trash the 3 files you dragged to your desktop.
So far this has been working for me.
If it didn't work, trash your itunes folder and reinstall with a clean copy of itunes downloaded from Apple.
    Good luck.

  • ITunes stops playing for no reason

Every once in a while, iTunes will randomly stop playing in midsong. I'm usually using a different application (Safari, MS Word, etc) when it happens. When I go back to iTunes the "play" key is on pause, as if I were to have paused the song myself. When I press play again, it's all good.
This used to happen with my 5 year old Powerbook G4 and I figured it was just the computer slowly decaying, but the same thing happens in my brand new Macbook, so I'm assuming it may be a software glitch. I'm running 7.5 right now. It's not a huge inconvenience, but I know it's not supposed to be happening.
    Anyone else have this problem?

You could try deleting the plist:
    1.) Quit iTunes
2.) Go to Home > Library > Preferences and delete a file called com.apple.itunes.plist
    3.) Restart or logout/login comp
4.) Open iTunes and try again
Also try in a new user. That'll narrow it down to an issue with your account or something more system-wide.

My purpose for copying to a CD or DVD is so that I can make copies and send to friends and relatives. What is the best way to get these files on a CD/DVD with the right codecs?
The easiest thing to do is to simply tell your friends and relatives to copy the files to their local hard drive before playing them. Your basic problem is that data discs have a limited real time transfer rate. Since you say VLC plays the files fine, I might suspect its player is likely buffering the data while the QT 7 Player is not.
Data discs made for playback directly from the CD or DVD are normally encoded using MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) video with AAC audio. This is a modern codec which has specific settings to re-package the data (i.e., must be encoded using the multipass option and then select the "optimize for CD/DVD" option).

  • ITunes stops playing music after 20 seconds

Hi there, after upgrading my os to Mac OS 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.6, iTunes stops playing my tunes after about 20 seconds. I have no idea why this is happening???

Try deleting the cache. Go to User Name>Library>Cache. Locate the iTunes cache file and delete that file.
