Which JVM for PDA?

I have to develop an application that runs on a Dell Axim X51 with Intel XScale PXA270 processor and Windows Mobile 5.0 OS.
I am new to J2ME and I'm not sure if there is already a JVM installed.
(I don't have the PDA yet)
What JVM can I use? Can I just install the SUN CDLC Reference Implementation and everything is fine or do I have to install some other JVM like IBM J9?
(Or have I mixed up something and the CLDC Reference Implementation is no JVM?)
Can somebody help me, please?

Hi,
I downloaded and installed on my HP iPAQ hx2790 JVM
from IBM - J9.
The file is:
ibm-weme-wm50-arm-ppro11_6.1.1.20061110-161633.exe
This JVM works on my HP iPAQ hx2790 (Windows Mobile
5.0 OS).
At least it was possible to run first example.
By the way - my device HP iPAQ hx2790 is not in the
list of target devices for J9, but in practice J9
works on this device.
Is J9 good or not - I don't know yet. Never did god
tests yet.
Go to IBM and try to use J9.
http://www.RoboHobby.com - Java brain for small J2ME
robot with camera.
.J9 is OK for most PDA devices. A big problem with J9 is that it does not support Video or any other Optional API that are supported by most smartphones (i.e. Bluetooth, Location, MMAPI).
I still cant believe that in order to play a small video file I need to write JNI crossplatform code.
Has anyone tried to play a video file with J9.

  • Jvm for PDA

    Hi!
    Is there any jvm for PDAs (it doesnt matter if freeware or not) that implements j2SE? I only have found jvm like NSIcom CrEme that implements j2me (CDC/PP)

    How much resources does it take to implement the J2SE? Does a PDA have them?

  • Which JVM for JDeveloper on Tiger, 1.4 or 5.0?

    Hi there,
    just upgraded to MacOS Tiger and so now JSDK 5.0 is available as an option. Default JVM is still 1.4.2_07
    Does anybody has experience on which JVM is suppoused to work best for JDeveloper Preview 10.1.3? And which is the right way to change it in Mac version of JDeveloper?
    thanks for any advice.
    Ignacio

    Actually to run JDeveloper itself you need to use JDK 1.4.
    You can develop JDK 5.0 applications with 10.1.3 preview - but the tool itself still need to be started with 1.4.

  • Which JVM for high performance environment?

    In a production environment, would you suggest JRockit or JDK for WebLogic? Is there a "better"?

    I think it would be more interesting to know what Oracle recommends. If I have to believe the inclusion of the JRockit forum under the Application Server category, they seem to place JRockit as part of their Weblogic stack.
    Given that Oracle charges for JRockit I would be rather certain about which one they recommend for everything.Not anymore right? Since the Sun take over it should be free. At least that's what wikipedia and several sources google found for me tell me :)

    General reply:
    Of course this question has been asked before. This is an interesting thread on stackoverflow:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10361311/diffrence-between-jrockit-in-bea-weblogic-and-sun-java-implementation
    I remember reading that features from JRockit would be merged into the 'regular' runtime (and that's also in the wikipedia entry). I think the heap space deal mentioned in the above thread at least is already implemented, the server VM at least since Java 6 update 18 tunes the max heap space based on the system environment in stead of having a stupidly low default.
    Doing a search for weblogic tuning guides also makes zero mention of JRockit anywhere. In fact this article right here:
    http://fasterbytes.blogspot.nl/2012/05/oracle-weblogic-server-12c-performance.html
    points in the opposite direction due to Hotspot being more up to date :)
    Finally: is there a Java 7 version of JRockit at all? It doesn't appear so.

  • Linux: which toolkit is used in JVM for heavyweight components?

    Hi,
    which toolkit is used by the Linux-variant of the JVM for the heavyweight-components? GTK?
    Oxy

    java.awt.Toolkit is abstract. He means what implementation is used (motif-based, etc.). For example, sun.awt.motif.MToolkit.
    It might vary from one Linux variant to another (and from one JVM version to another), I'm not sure. But for any particular Linux system, you can run this program to find out:
    import java.awt.*;
    public class test {
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          System.out.println(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getClass());

    hi jack...
    You can use ibm's wsdd(websphere device developer) as plugin to wsad(websphere application developer) for developing web applications which can be run on palm devices. It uses j9(ibm's implemention of jvm).

  • IDM 7.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2 (SQL Server ): Which NTW ? Which JVM ?

    Hello,
    We are installing IDM 7.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2 using the database SQL Server 2008 R2.
    1/ Which NetWeaver should we use to install the Java Application Server (NTW 7.3 or NTW 7.2)?
    Using install guides 7.2rev8, we tried NTW 7.3 but it comes with JVM 1.6 that isn't supported, according to the PAM.
    Should we install the AS Java with NTW 7.2 that comes with JVM 1.5 (JVM 1.5 being supported)?
    2/ Has someone installed IDM 7.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2 (SQL Server)?
    If yes, which NTW was used (7.2 or 7.3)? Which JVM was used (1.5 or 1.6)? Which JDBC drivers (1.2 or 3)?
    Thanks a lot for your replies,

    Hi Narendra,
    Sun actually has a VM for the ARM ... well, actually 2 VMs for the ARM. Depending on your needs, there's a solution for JavaME CLDC, JavaME CDC, or JavaSE. There's also the open source implementations for CLDC and CDC. Here's how to get more info:
    JavaME: http://java.sun.com/javame/index.jsp

  • Building executabe for PDA takes enourmous time or hangs

    I have an application consisting of 30 VIs. The depth of hierarchy is 6 levels and the average size of the single VI is 100kB. The size of my application should not be a problem for the PocketPC?
    The application runs well in the desktop PC and the compiler does not to indicate errors when the execution target is PocketPC2002 or the emulator. However, when I try to build the executable for the PocketPC (Tools->Build for PDA...) everything seems to be ok, VIs are listed and no errors.
    What I am wondering is a looooooong build time. It takes 30 minutes to build this application in 1.6GHz desktop computer. I think it is far too much! I am planning to have an PDA application which might have over 200 VIs - I won't
    even guess how much it takes to build that!
    Does this kind of extreme long build time indicate some kind of problem in the application? When I run this application in PDA (final size of the exe is 2MB) it stops its execution immediately (it should display some analysis results).
    Then I made some minor modifications to the application and now the build process did not end after 2 hours (I restarted).
    I have updated the PDA toolkit to 7.0f1.
    Any experiences of similar behavior?
    thanks,
    Wirer

    I tested with another application which also had a similar hierarchical structure (30 VIs with depth of 6) but VI sizes were much smaller (average of 30kB). To build this application took 'only' two minutes!
    If the size or complexity of the VIs can affect to the build time this dramatically, it would be useful to have some kind of time approximation for the build process before its start. At minimum there should be an information field along the progress bar which indicates the VI under processing. Current 'progress bar' does not give any information of the state of the total progress and if the build takes a long time, a bored developer might think that its stucked.

  • Why SUN not providing VM for PDA (Pocket PC)

    Why is SUN not providing VM for PDA (Pocket PC)??
    We need to use third party VMs. and most of the Vms are not free.
    Is there any VM for pocket PC which supports atleast J2SE 1.2??
    Thanks in advance

    Since there are so many different confiurations and profiles, coupled with the large number of PDA Operating Systems, sun dont bother making VM's for all of them and so leave it up to third parties to make them. Sun then verifys the VM's fulfil the micro edition virtual machine spec.
    there are also political reasons; ie. sun dosent want to make life any easier for microsoft and so are damed if theyt are going to write a VM for windows CE/XP eMbedded. If they ever do support any particular platform its probobly gonna be Palm.
    Here's a list of VM's along with technical specs.

  • JVM for a S45 Siemens Pocket PC?

    Hello everybody. I have found an S45 Siemens Pocket PC from a friend of mine. It is very old an dI was wondering if it does support any Java VIrtual Machine to install on it.
    I have already tried the Jeode(usual for Compaq iPAQ H3800,H3900 series and etc). It does not supported by this device.
    It runs Windows CE(I could not find which version....)
    If anybody knows which JVM it does support I would really be appreciated for.
    Thank you.

    You can search the web to figure out what version of PocketPC you have. Depending on your model, you can probably buy an upgrade CD to bring it up to PocketPC 2003. I think you can get these on EBay for around $10.
    There are some PocketPC third party browsers that include Java plugins.
    You can probably install Personal Java (JVM 1.1). Not sure where the download link is, but is is on the Sun site somewhere.
    Finally, if you want Java 2 capability, you may want to look at KaffeCE. But you'll need to get the source and rebuild it.

  • CREATE and DELETE operations in MI7.1 for PDA

    Hi,
    We are developing a sample scenario for PDA in 7.1. Problem is we are able to implement GETLIST, GETDETAIL and MODIFY operations but not able to implement CREATE and DELETE operations. For GETLIST and GETDETAIL i have created queries. Modify is also simple (i am creating a form to edit and commiting data once i click on save). But to implement CREATE and DELETE we dont have any reference.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    Now i know the answer
    There is a typed method on the service component model class for root node creation. Example for binding a new root instance to a context node:
    wdContext.nodeCurrentEmployee().bind(Collections.singleton(model.createEmployeeSdoEmployee()));
    where model is your webdynpro model.Employee is a context node model bounded to Employee model class.This node has to be manually created in context(and then can be context mapped and bound to elements in view)
    wdContext.nodeCurrentEmployee().setLeadSelection(0);
    Creating a child is done on the root itself, but persisting it is a two step process:
    address = employeeRootNode.createNewAddresss(); <- this only creates the instance in memory
    where employeeRootNode is the model object for which the child has to be created. If the element for which the child has to be created exists in context then it can be got by
    wdContext.nodeEmployee().currentEmployeeElement.model()
    employeeRootNode.addToAddresss(address);  <- this persists the new instance
    wdContext.nodeCurrentAddress().bind(Collections.singleton(address));
    wdContext.nodeCurrentAddress().setLeadSelection(0);
    Delete of a root is also done on the sc model class:
    model.removeEmployeeSdoEmployee(employeeRootNode);
    Delete of a child is done one the root:
    employeeRootNode.removeFromAddresss(address);
    Hope this helps.
