Which Macbook Pro Retina specs would be best for me?

Hey (:
I'm planning on purchasing either a 13" Macbook Pro Retina, with 512gb Flash Based Storage/2.6GHz, and an upgraded memory of 16GB, or the 15" MBP Retina, with 2.0GHz/256 Flash Based storage, and then upgrading it to 16GB. I was wondering whether you could tell me which model would suit me better, and whether it'd be wise to upgrade to 16GB since its non-upgradeable after prchase?
I'm going to be using the Macbook for everyday work, but also for Photoshop artwork pretty much everyday, as well as editing a few videos and music pieces. I'll need to be using Safari with various tabs open and I'll be playing videos from Youtube while I work, often on Photoshop while having large canvases and multiple layers open. Occasionally, I'll need to be running games when I'm doing game design as well. I'm hoping that the MB will last me for atleast 6 years, throughout college - so thats why I thought the 16GB might be a good idea? I'm looking for high performance as well.
Any help is much appreciated ^^
Thanks (:

If money is an option get the 13". If not get the 15". In 2 years you'll be wanting a new one because of all the latest and greatest features that will have come out. Get what you can use adequately now.

Very disappointing. I cannot wait. I will buy windows laptop because out of patient.

Does the October 2013 model not meet your needs? What advances would you expect or see in a 2014 model?

  • I have just gone from PCM to MacBook Pro retina and would like to now go to imac. Is it worth waiting for retina on imac and when will it arrive

I have just gone from PCM to MacBook Pro retina and would like to now go to imac. Is it worth waiting for retina on imac and when will it arrive

I'm not Klaus but can give an opinion on this part:
As a Mac man yourself do you think that the retina display is worth waiting for?
I'm 65, have used Macs since 1989, and struggle with displays, cataracts, and bifocals. What I've seen of the Retinas in stores is that text size gets sacrificed for image quality. There are quite a few complaints about Retina in the MacBook Pro forums about not being able to increase the size of menu text without it getting fuzzy.
My iMac 27-inch is about a year old and I can set the display res from its default of 2560x1440 to 1920x1080 and everything is sharp. I understand that handy trick will not work for either the older hi-res macbook pros or the Retinas, so I don't expect it for any other Macs.
Speculation on Apple policy and new product releases is actiually not allowed by the Terms of Use around here so I doubt you'll get an answer to the "when" part. Anyone who does answer "when" is either guessing it up or violating a non-disclosure agreement!   Apple plays its cards close to its vest and we average users only know "when" when Apple posts the announcement.

  • Can I take my new MacBook Pro retina to an apple store for them to transfer files

Can I take my new MacBook Pro retina to an apple store for them to transfer files from my PC? I am migrating from window 7. I was planning on doing myself but it looks like you need two thunderbolt to Ethernet adapters and two Ethernet cables? What is the best way to transfer? I live in a rural area and think maybe wirelessly may not be the best way? Thanks for any assistance!

Can I use my back up from my PC to transfer? I just backed up my PC to WD My Book. Will that work?
Probably will work fine. It's worth a try and won't do any harm.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2518
What you can transfer to your Mac depends on the files.
Photo files (.jpg .tiff etc) fine
Music files - some may need conversion software to be used in iTunes (unless you had iTunes on your PC) but free converters are there
Video files - ditto, some will work in iMovie, others may need converting to work
Text - Pages will read .doc and .docx files.  Most Word processing files/spreadsheet files/presentation files can be read in iWork but if not, can use Open Office or Libre Office (both free downloads)
Windows programs (eg those with a .exe suffix) won't work on a Mac without installing Windows (e.g. via BootCamp).

Unfortunately, that is not possible. The computer only can "output" your display image, it cannot "input" an image from an external computer and display it on your MacBook's retina display.

  • 13" Macbook Pro Retina Specs? i5 vs i7? 4gb vs. 8gb vs. 16gb?

im not sure if i can upload these kind of questions, but i might as well give it a try. i need as many GOOD feedbacks as possible.
    ok heres the thing..
I'm planning to buy a 2013 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display soon. This will be my 2nd mac laptop after i sold my other one early because my car broke down early this year. Once i buy my mac i'm planning on keeping for well over 6 years and a little over 10 years hopefully.
Please don't tell me that computers will break down eventually because i am also somewhat tech savvy and take good care of my electronics. in fact, I first macbook ran very well that i was planning on keeping for a very long time as usual with apple products. unfortunately i had to sell it because my car broke down and needed the immediate cash at that time.
This is very important to me for my future as im also still in school trying to finish up. So I'm asking as many different opinions as possible and please be specific. for ex.: You should get the i7 since it will benefit you for the long term and you will feel the big difference even in small internet tasks and watching HD movies.
don't just say get an i5 for example, tell me your opinion why certain specs will be good enough than the other. Simply, Compare and contrast.
I know this was long but i'll get the point of the question..
My main question #1: Are there big differences between the new Haswell i5 2.4Ghz & an i7 2.8Ghz for what I do on the computer?
My main Question #2: Is it worth getting 4gb ram or 16gb ram?
To Finalize: Are all these worth my money for what I am going to use it for and length of time?
here are the list of models..#1 specs indicates my first choice whether or not it will be worth my money? (If its worth it, I am willing to spend up to almost 2k.)
    1) 13" Macbook Pro Retina 2013
    Haswell Intel Core i7 2.8 Ghz 16GB DDR3 Ram, & 128 SSD
    Price: $1,899 (Configured & Shipped)
    2) 13" Macbook Pro Retina 2013
    Haswell Intel Core i5 2.4 Ghz 4GB DDR3 Ram, & 128 SSD
    Price: $1,299 (In Store)
FYI: I am fully aware that the new retinas are non-configurable in the future which I'm totally fine with it.
Ok heres how i'll be using my macbook..
Internet, movie/tv show streaming, some light media downloads for entertainments for personal pleasure, watching 1080p movies and shows. (I multi task a lot too, but I never game nor i use photoshop and other intensive applications.) i very rarely sometimes use photoshop though but it would be just merely just for fun and messing around.
as for school and other work related usages are...
im a sociology major and plan on teaching elementary level kids in the future and maybe? open a small business with my own specialties but teaching would be my main long term goal.
I look in the long term and i want a quite speedy computer. I fully know the base model is also more than enough i need but once again for the speed. plus, smallest 128 SSD is always enough for me so no worries about storage space.
once again i need as many GOOD feedbacks as possible as this is important to me and my budget. and please be specific of what you say. thanks
So would the #1 choice of my macbook pro be totally worth my 2ks? Are there a huge difference between an i5 2.4 & i7 2.8 that i will totally feel while using my mac on a daily basis?

  • Cannot decide which macbook pro retina to buy

    Hi all,
I am new to the community even though i have been usinig a macbook since 2009. My old macbook pro got stolen and i need to buy a new one now! I am between the following setups:
    1) refurbished retina 15" early 2013, 2.7Ghz, 512 SSD, Nvidia gt 650, 16 GB ram
    or
    2) new 15" Haswell retina 2,0 Ghz 256 SSD, Iris Pro, 16 GB ram
Which one would you choose if you take into account that the haswell model is actuall 100$ cheaper than the refurbished one?
I want o keep it for at least 5 years. Will the Nvidia 650 gt make a big difference? I do not use any demanding photo editing or auto cad software but i would like to be able to play games (First person shooter) from time to time, even though i have a desktop for that.

    Hi!
For gaming MB is better with Nvidia GT 650 GPU. Here are these 2 GPU's comparision link
I have early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina and I am totally happy about GPU and CPU performance.
But in your way i'll choose newest model, because you have desktop computer for gaming (IMHO gaming is always better on desktop).
New Haswell cpu is good for battery life!
In this computer age new is always better

  • Which Macbook Pro retina do I get?

I've been spending a lot of time reading topics about people asking what Macbook Pro Retina they should get, but I'm still not completely sure which one I need. I'm deciding between the 2.3 GHz with the 256gb ssd and the 2.6 with the 512gb ssd. Either way I'm going to get 16gb ram. I'm getting the laptop for college, so I'll be using it for surfing the web, watching HD movies, doing some video editing, typing documents, and playing games, such as Crysis 2, Batman Arkham City, Diablo III, etc. Also, I'm planning on bootcamping extensively (so I can play those games).
My main concern is whether the 256gb ssd will cut it, and whether the extra ssd space and the .3 ghz increase in cpu speed is really worth the huge chunk of cash I'd have to pay, or whether I'd be better off with an external drive. On my current laptop, I already have over 80gb in just movies, and games alone would take up around 70gb. Also, I'll be keeping this laptop for around 4 years, so I want it to last.
Also, if I get an external hard drive, I'm looking at the Buffalo Ministation 1TB Thunderbolt
    Thanks for your help guys,
    Krad

Sure, you can do that, but IMO, an internal drive less than 500GB's, is too small. Especially since it can't be upgraded...at least at the present, anyway. A bit of advice: never plan things based on vaporware...IE, that someone will figure out how to upgrade the hard drive on a Retina. But, many users do just fine with the 256GB drive, & you may as well.
At the end of the day, it's your money, your computer, so whatever decision you make will be correct for you.

  • Which macbook pro retina should i buy?

Hello guys! Im really not sure which macbook should i buy:
    1) Maccbook pro retina early 2013 with 256gb/8gb/hd 4000 or
    2) Later 2013 macbook pro retina with 128gb/4gb/iris graphics.
Im going to use it for photography and to edit videos, but nothing professional. And also for basic stuff that i need in university or even to play some games like simcity and the sims 3/4..
    What do u think guys?

I see you are choosing from the refurbished units.  Good move.
I would concentrate on RAM size, SSD size and of course price.  In my opinion those are bigger factors than the difference in GPUs.
4 GB of RAM is sufficient of most programs but some applications do better in 8 GB.  You cannot upgrade RAM and memory demands are likely to grow over time.  So 8 GB is future proofing the system.
A big question is do you need 128 or 256 GB of SSD?  How much storage do you use now?  How much more are you likely to use (more music, photos, videos…)?  If this will be near 100 GB then I would opt for 256 GBs of SSD.  The SSDs are not upgradeable while under warranty.
    Refurbished, Feb-2013, 8 GB, 256 GB, Intel HD Graphics 4000: $1,230.  <<<- #1 In your list
Refurbished, Oct-2013, 4 GB, 128 GB, Intel Iris Graphics: $1,100. <<<- #2 in your list
For the difference of $170 I would choose the 8/256 GB model.

  • Macbook pro retina doesn't turn on for a day or two

Macbook Pro Retina     13-inch Late 2012
    2.5GHz Intel Core i5
    OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
So this is a weird one... I recently purchased a used Macbook Pro Retina and the previous owner had upgraded the hard drive for a bigger size. My macbook worked great for a few days but then one night I closed it and the next day when I opened it, it would not turn on. I tried rebooting the battery (SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION and POWER) then hitting power but NOTHING. At one point, I heard a clicking sound when I would leave the power button down. Then... two days later I push the power button just because and BAM! The screen comes on. (I didn't hear the start up sound, and it wasn't like it restarted.) It was as if the screen brightness was all the way down but then came back. (I kept trying to adjust that too before it turned on).
I don't understand!!! Two days later, same thing happened. Then again, it turned back on a day later.
The only thing I noticed that was weird was when I connected it to my tv with HDMI cable. The laptop screen would freeze and get distorted and I would have to force a restart (the black screen with the apple would appear and the loading bar as if I would updating the software).
I'm soooo confused and I don't want this to keep happening. I would appreciate any type of help or advice!!

  • Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) and support for two external monitor

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" (Late 2013) and are looking to buy two DELL U2414 monitors. But after searching the web i´m a little bit confused if my MBPr will actually supports connecting two montors from one single Display port.
I will be using this montors at work where I use my MBPr with Windows7 (Paralllels).
I want to set up these two monitors with extended desktop not mirroring. The reason of using just one DP on my MBPr is that the other one is used by my wired ethernet connection. Will this work under OSX10.9.2 or 10.9.3?. Does my MBPr 13" support DP1.2a MST that is needed for daisy chain multiple monitors?

The hardware supports DP1.2 and MST but unfortunately at present OS X Mavericks does not.

  • Can't pair my Macbook Pro Retina to my iPhone 5S for Handoff

Bluetooth is on, I'm running Yosemite, iOS8.1, followed directions to pair my phone to my Macbook. Handoff is enabled on both my Macbook's system prefs and also on my iPhone 5s. When I click "Pair" my phone displays a message with a code, so I accept the code on my phone, then the Bluetooth window says they are "connected", but a few seconds later it says "disconnected" and it fails.
I can't get this Handoff thing to work. I've restarted both my Macbook and iPhone 5s but what else am I missing?
    Here's what happens:
    And then...
And my iPhone alerts me to pair with the code. I tap to pair on my iPhone and then...
It says it's CONNECTED... but.... in two seconds this happens:
    "NOT CONNECTED"!
I'm running iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5S and Yosemite 10.10. Bluetooth is enabled on both devices. I've rebooted my Macbook twice and my iPhone twice and tried this process all over again but same results. Pairing fails. Again, I have Handoff enabled on both my iPhone and my Macbook Pro Retina.
Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!
    Jay

Correct, as there is no supported protocol to do so.

  • Which MBP do you think would be best for me (read inside)?

    Hello, thanks for helping!
I'm a current high school junior who has been avidly using mac products since I was 8 years old thanks to various hand me downs from my older brother over the years. About 6 years ago I got my first "new" laptop, a standard 13" macbook. Unfortunately, it's beginning to die. I've had lots of issues with it in the past for some reason, it just seems to have weird quirks such as issues with the DVD drive and some SERIOUS slowness that are minor enough I don't need to go pay to have them fixed but they're quite annoying.
Anyway, I've been looking into purchasing a macbook pro that would last me at least through college and hopefully part of the way into graduate school, because I know that student debt will make it really hard to purchase a new one until at least then. I use my laptop a lot, probably too much for my own good. My main things are searching the internet, writing papers, watching movies, ect.. but until my mac started failing on me I used to LOVE graphic design and playing games (the sims in particular) but I've had to give that up because my computer can't handle the huge graphics strain. However, because I've been away from it for so long I'm not so sure I'd be able to get back into it to the degree where I absolutely NEEDED the graphic ability (For instance, I doubt I'll be pursuing a career in graphic design)... but it would be nice to have.
So I'm wondering- which model should I get? Is the graphic capabilities of the 15" worth the extra bulk/decreased easy transportation ability? Are the graphic capabilities of the 13" enough so I don't have to shell out the extra $$?
Please help me out- I really appreciate your time!
    -Bria

If money is an option get the 13". If not get the 15". In 2 years you'll be wanting a new one because of all the latest and greatest features that will have come out. Get what you can use adequately now.

  • MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 not scanning for new WiFi networks

My late-2013 Macbook Pro w. retina screen is usually connected to my workplace wi-fi network.
Sometimes I need to disconnect from the usual network and connect to my Samsung S4's personal hotspot network.
I start the hotspot on the phone and I click on the wi-fi icon on the top bar.
Since a few weeks, the MacBook appears not to scan for new networks and does not show the phone's hotspot.
Earlier it used to display a "scanning for networks" message, and in a few seconds the phone hotspot's SSID appeared.
I am able to connect to the phone's hotspot using a workaround: from the icon, I click network preferences at the bottom of the list.
From the Network Preferences pane, in the middle, there is a droplist. I shows just the current network (the workplace network). I click the double arrow icon on the right and select "join other network". Then I cancel the popup window. The list now shows all networks around, including my phone's hotspot.
Is it a common/known issue? Will it be fixed? Thanks in advance

Apparently, the 10.9.2 update fixed this.
the "Wi-Fi: Looking for Wi-Fi networks..." is back.
