Which Printer

Lets say i have two printers connected to a machine, or via network. How do i write a program that allows the user to select which printer he wishes to use.
I know that a dialog box already exists, but i want to make my own one.
PrinterJob printJob = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
if(printJob.printDialog()) // Creates the printer Dialog.
//IF true returned then print
The PrinterJob class contains limited functions as far as i can see
abstract int getCopies()
Gets the number of copies to be printed.
abstract String getJobName()
Gets the name of the document to be printed.
static PrinterJob getPrinterJob()
Creates and returns a PrinterJob.
abstract String getUserName()
Gets the name of the printing user.
I dont see how any of these functions will return a list of printers available. I seem to be missing something somewhere.
Cheers for any help
dave

I know the information comes from the OS, but there must be a way for java to get access to this information. It puts the names into a Java Drop Down Box doesn't it? All i need is for my program to be able to choose between different printers without using the printdialog() function.

    Which print in acrobat professional 9 in  windows 8.1 x64?

    To print from Acrobat 9 Pro the click-path is "file - print".
    As to using an Acrobat 9.x product in Windows 8.1 that's a no go.
    The Acrobat 9.x product family is not compatible in Windows 8 or 8.1.
    Note: The Acrobat 9.x product family passed into "End of Support" mid-year of 2013.
    If in Windows 8.1 one must install (and update) Acrobat XI.

    I have two shared printers and I want to be able to select one printer when it is time to print without having to set a default EACH time.  Can I just have a prompt or dialog box that will ask me which printer would you like to use???  The only options I can find are "default" and "Last printer used" which means I must go into the Print & Fax area and change the default EACH time I want to print???  Seems very low tech.....

    In most cases you get this dialog box every time you print. It is called the print dialog and normally when you print, a print dialog appear showing the printer that is to be used. Which printer you see will be based on what you have set in Print & Fax as you mention. But regardless of what you have set there, you still have the option to change the printer via the print dialog.
    If you are using an application that does not show the print dialog, like MS Word and that stupid "print one copy" print icon in the toolbar, then you can often change the action the print icon uses so that the print dialog appears.

  • I want to be able to select which printer I would like to print from

    When I want to print a document/packing slip, I use to get the option of selecting which printer and how many pages or what pages to print. After I updated FireFox, I don't have that option. please help :(

    By pressing control P, it automatically prints. I am trying to process some packing slips through a website we use for orders (SHIPSTATION) and before I updated Mozilla, it worked fine. I would select the order and be able to print any pages and what printer too. Now when I select print, it just automatically prints to my label maker. I have to download it into a pdf in order to print it the way I want it to(or how it use to).

    Look for cloud solutions such as DropBox, OneDrive, SugarSync or others. They are all cloud based services that sync documents between computers via the cloud. Of course another solution is simply a flash drive formatted in exFat so that Macs and Windows computers can read it.

  • Which printer will make the fewest problems?

    Hi,
    I plan to buy a new printer, since my current one (Canon Pixma 4600, had it for 3 months) is causing problem after problem. I am sick and tired of reinstalling the printer over and over. Reminds me of my windows days...
    I used to have a basic HP inkjet that did run great with and without Airport Express.
    Any recommendations for a compact, problem-free printer?
    (PS: I do not care about photo printing, I do basic stuff only)

    The opinion of a problem free printer is not objective. I'm sure that someone else who is using the same printer as you is not having to reinstall the driver many times. And any recommendation someone else has may not work perfectly for you.
    Having to reinstall the printer driver would indicate to me you have an issue with your Mac, in as far as its interoperation with the Canon driver and the core system and installed applications. This could be a fault of the Canon driver, possibly due to a conflict with something left over from a previous install, such as the HP Ink Jet driver suite. Therefore you could look at not using the Canon software and using version 5.2.3 of Gutenprint, which lists the iP4600 as a supported printer. If it works then at least you have narrowed down the cause, but if it fails in the same manner then you know you have something wrong at the core which another printer won't necessarily resolve.

  • Opinions on which printer best fits needs...

    I will be going to Japan soon for work and was recommended that I bring my own laptop, printer, speakers, etc. I have a 13" aluminum MacBook that I bought last Christmas and it's still in tip top shape. I've been looking at the printers for sale on this website, but there is so many. I am not sure which to choose from. I will be doing a lot of printing, scanning, and copying for work, but when not working I plan to be taking a lot of photos (photography is one of my favorite hobbies) - so I would also like a printer that prints out photographs really well. I would preferably like a printer that can do all this, but still isn't too too heavy and bulky. Any suggestions?

    I'd say go here: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/macaccessories/printers and look at the Photosmart printers. They're a bit bulky--but if you're going to be gone more than a few weeks, and doing the work you'll be doing, it might just be worth your while.
    Don't forget to get any international power cord adapters before you go. I'd also look into a powerstrip with surge protection, and at least one set of extra printer cartridges.

    Hi @ck80 ,
    I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publically post ( serial numbers and case details).

  • Which printer is better for a MacBook Pro: Epson 2540 or HP 5520?

    Looking to purchase a MBP and so will my roommate. We were wondering if there is a significant advantage of one over the other. The only difference I noted was that the Epson was able to connect directly through an ethernet port but I don't know how useful that would be. If you know of any other printer that you think would work best (pref. something with Wi-Fi or the ability to print wirelessly) with a price range of $80-150 are welcomed as well. Thank You.

    Even the least expensive Mac can do papers and Internet; those are pretty basic tasks. So you dont need to go overboard with a Pro model. The only reason for you to get a Pro is if you want it to last as long as possible, but now that you can't upgrade most MacBook Pros, a loaded 13" Air would probably last just as long.
    You could buy a lower-end Mac to handle what you need to do, and to make it last longer you can order it with more RAM and storage since you can't upgrade it later.

    The 15" anti-glare, you likely will have to run Windows too to run software only Windows has (as well as keeping up with your skills there), and it's easier to run it as a program in OS X (virtual machine) than using Bootcamp which a weaker Mac will have to do.
    OK, a couple things here. I have the 15" antiglare so I sure do love it but...where do you buy one these days? I don't think it's an option because I don't think it can be ordered any more.
    Also, lots of college students can get through their program without ever using Windows, I don't think it should be assumed. The need for Windows compatibility has gone down as more required apps now live on the Web, which is platform agnostic.

  • Which printer brands work best with Mac?

    Well, it sounds like my HP LaserJet 3015 will not duplex with my new Mac (only with PCs, I guess), so I am going to need a new printer. Does anyone have suggestions on which brands of printers work well with the Mac? Thanks in advance...

    There are a number of Laserjet 3015 models. Some have automatic duplexing and others do not. If it has duplexing, it should do it whether it is on a Mac or a PC. Make sure you have duplexing and the proper driver for your printer. If you are using a Gutenprint driver instead of the HP driver, you may not have duplexing available. If you click on Options & Supplies in Print & Fax, you will be able to see which driver you are using.

  • Which printer fits my left-over ink cartridges?

    Some advice please....My elderly OfficeJet 6110 has finally gone to the Great Print Shop In The Sky...sad, but these things happen and it has given good service. So I need a new machine.
    One factor in my choice is that I am sitting on a number of HP 56, 57 & 58 ink cartridges. Naturally, I do not want to just throw them away.
    So - which new machines (if any) are available that (still)use these cartridges?
    Many Thanks

    The one that comes to mind is the OfficeJet H470.  It's a cute little mobile printer.  Not super photo-centric.  There are probably others, but I'll need to look into it further.
