Which SSMS 2008 to install on Windows 8.1

This may sound like a non-question, but I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 computer with Visual Studio 2010 Premium x86 installed.
VS installed SQL Server 2008, but I want to install SQL Management Studio Express 2008 as well.
After reading about a compatibility issue, I installed Service Pack3,  SQLServer2008SP3-KB2546951-x64-ENU.
When I went to the download page for SSMS, I find there are 2-flavors available, x86 and x64.
Which should I install and if I choose the x64 version for my 64-bit Windows, will it work with my Visual Studio x86 install?
As just an FYI as to why I have the x86 Visual Studio; I previously had it along with SSMS Express 2008 installed on a 32-bit Windows-XP system , which crashed and after purchasing a new system with Windows 8.1, I wanted to install the Visual Studio
and SSMS again.
Thank you

Upon following the help link, one suggestion was to start the SQL Server Browser Service. But I found that SQL Server 2008 SQL Server Browser service missing in services. I'm not sure if this was supposed to be part of a separate install, but it's missing
and therefore cannot be started. It also does not see a default instance of the server, which should be the computer name\SQLEXPRESS.
When I initially installed Visual Studio 2010 on my Windows 8.1 system, it should have installed SQL Server 2008. Finding that there could have been a compatibility issue, I installed SQLServer2008SP3-KB2546951-x64-ENU.exe on the system. That is when I opened
this forum question. Not sure if this will be helpful, but when I look in Control Panel Programs, this is what I see, a mixture of SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2.
Can you suggest what needs to be done in order to #1 get the server browser installed, and #2 to get the server to recognize a named instance of the server so that I can connect to it?
Hi CodingMann,
SQL Server Brower Service is installed with SQL Server, which provides the instance name and the version number. The SQL Server Browser can be configured during setup or by using SQL Server Configuration Manager. Also you can run services.msc in command
line and check if SQL Server Browser exists, then start it. If the SQL Server Browser service is not running, you are still able to connect to SQL Server if you provide the correct port number or named pipe. For instance, you can connect to the default instance
of SQL Server with TCP/IP if it is running on port 1433. For more information, see:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181087(v=sql.100).aspx
If you choose installing an named instance of SQL Server 2008 Express, the
named instance can use an instance name of MSSQLSERVER, for more information, you can review the similar article.

  • Which Java version to install on Windows w/AMD Athlon 4400+?

    Hello all,
Until now, I've always run Windows on an Intel Pentium platform. However, I just purchased a new PC with an AMD64 Athlon 4400+ processor (one of those new "dual core" jobs). According to the PC manufacturer, this processor can run at 64-bit or 32-bit, but by default, is set to 32-bit processing.
    Here's my question:
Assuming that I'll be running this machine as a 32-bit processor, which version of the JDK should I pick to run on this new system? Windows/Pentium or Windows AMD64?
    Thanks for your help.

    Be careful here.
I went out and bought a nice new AMD64 cpu and
installed the beta Windows XP 64 bit edition and then
tried to install that 64 bit Java for AMD and never
got past the install. Windows kept killing the
installer insisting it was either a virus or
    unauthorized or some such nonsense.
After not being able to install other 32 bits apps
(and I had no problems with other 32 bis apps, mind
you) I finally removed windows 64 and installed
Windows XP Pro and Java 1.4.x without issues.
Conclusion: Install the 32 bit Java if your OS is 32
bit, install the 64 bit version of Java if your OS is
64 bit (if you can). Your hardware makes no
difference if it can operate at both 32 and 64 bits.
Then it depends on the OS that you're running
g because it will tell your CPU which mode to operate
in."Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is designed to meet the demands of customers who require large amounts of memory and floating point performance in areas such as mechanical design and analysis, 3-D animation, video editing and composition, and scientific and high-performance computing applications. "
    - Microsoft
"If you use only 32-bit applications and work with data sets not larger than 2 GB, you will find that 32-bit, Windows XP Professional is the best desktop system for your applications."
    - Microsoft
Are you even doing anything Windows 64 is designed for? Unless you're running in a 64-bit environment you shouldn't be downloading the 64-bit Java, whether or not your processor can support 64-bit environments is irrelevent. If you're a Windows user, then chances are you shouldn't be using Windows 64 because unless you require massive amounts of processor power and memory for things like animation or engineering it's not for you.

  • SCORM (flash Player Content) not working on Windows Server 2012 R2 which has IE11 integrated installed on it.

    Hi Everyone,
I have website which contains SCORM package, installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 which has IE11 installed on it.
Flash Player is also embedded with IE.
    IE Version:  11.0.9600.17278.
    Updated Version: 11.0.12 (KB2977629)
When I launch SCORM (flash Player Content) from my application, it is not working. It just displays a blank page however the Title of IE is set to the text from the SCORM content.
However if I access the same URL from any other machine which has previous version of Windows OS (i.e. previous to Windows 8 OS), it is working as expected on IE9, IE10 and IE11.
While trying to find out the cause, I came across some forum which says we have to install the “Desktop Experience” on the server to enable the inbuilt flash player. After doing that also, My SCORM contents are not getting displayed.
To find out more details, I have uploaded the SCORM Package on SCORM Cloud to check if it is working there. Here again the same problem, it doesn’t work and displays
error message saying that “Member is not found” and when I tried to find out the location of the error then it is coming at
Windows.document.myFlash.setVariable(…) method on the Windows Server 2012 R2 with IE11.
When I performed “Addwatch”, it is saying that Windows.document.myFlash doesn’t have setVariable(…) method.
However if access the same cloud URL from other machine (Having OS previous to Windows 8 OS), it is working as expected.
I have attached the screenshot of the error.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello,
I'd ask the SCORM package provider or in Microsoft's  ASP.Net forums:
    http://forums.asp.net/
As Microsoft's ASP.Net forums are on a different platform, we cannot move the question for you.

    Hi,
I did the test and could install the Windows Search Service without problem.
Which role did you installed on the terminal server?
Did you try to install it on another windows server?

I think you mean Photoshop CS2.  Photoshop 2 is from around 1992.  The old Adobe activation servers were taken down. CS2 is about a decade old Adobe made a new download for old customers that legal customers can download and install. Download Acrobat 7 and CS2 products

Assuming your rig can support virtual machines, you can use Hyper-V and run another OS there.
Better practice however is to use a dedicated machine and use remote desktop to the server.

I cannot install latest itunes to my Sony notebook which is running on traditional chinese windows 7 64-bit, the error message is something like unrecognized windows package, can any one help me or has similar experience? Thanks.

iTunes 9.0.x is certainly compatible with Win7 64 bit since I use that exact setup on 3 different PCs. Two suggestions for your installation problems:
1)Download a new copy of the 64 bit installer from Apple then, instead of just running the itunes installer right click on it and try 'run as adminstrator'. In my experience that clears up a world of problems with program installation in Win7 and Vista. This is necessary even if you're already logged in as an administrator.
    2) Try the previous version of iTunes (9.0.3). You can get a copy at http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=54 again right click on the file and "run as administrator"
    Good luck, hope this helps.

    Hi Xiaojin,
    Thanks for posting in MSDN.
I don't think this is a bug. From your description, you want to install VC redist on some servers core for Windows Server 2008, 2012. Based on my knowledge, server core has no graphical user interface (GUI), there is no desktop. Only code written using Windows
application programming interfaces (APIs) can run on Server Core.

Hi, the trial period of the windows 8.1 installed at my HP 14-d003tx Notebook PC expired already so I installed a new windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit OS. I went here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-14-Notebook-PC-series/6529958/model/6753958 to check the drivers to be installed but I got confused because I don't know which is which or which drivers I need to install in my laptop. For example, for the bluetooth and wlan drivers, there are 2 drivers to choose from, MediaTek(Ralink) 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) Adapter and Mediatek 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter Driver, same for the bluetooth and other drivers. Can you please assist me which drivers is compatible or which drivers do I need to install at my laptop? Or how will I know which drivers I need to install. Thanks!
