I have connected to database 'TestDB',why oracle say 'target database not found in recovery catalog'? I am puzzled with it very much. How to backup my datafile?
Thanks in advance!

  • Why backups fail despite ample disk space?

PROB: Backups fail. Not enough space. With Disk Utility, erased contents of 239.9 GB Maxtor. Still backups fail with 232.5 of 232.6 GB available.

I'm having the same problem. I have a 1 TB Time machine hard drive, and I have 761GB to back up.
I reformatted the Time machine hard drive. When I try to back up, I get a message: Backup failed. You have 961GB to back up and only 931GB available space.
    That's too small.
First, while it varies greatly depending on how you use your Mac, Time Machine usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up, to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you. See #1 in the FAQ per my previous post.
Second, a 1 TB Time Capsule has a total of about 930 GB when counted the way Leopard counts it, after formatting. If the message says it needs 961 GB after adding the 20%, it's trying to back up more like 800 GB. So you must have something else connected. Check the +Total included+ as in my previous post.
See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs. They'll show more of the detail.
You may be able to squeeze a backup onto your TC by excluding a lot of large things, so the total plus 20% doesn't exceed 931 GB. Then remove the exclusions and run another backup -- since the new amount to be backed-up will be much smaller, the 20% won't be as large, either, and it may fit.
Longer term, you need a much larger Time Machine volume.
Since you have an iMac, your best bet is to get a 2 TB external HD and connect it directly to your iMac. It will be much faster and more reliable, too.

  • First generation backup failed.  How do I find out why?

My first generation iPod touch backup Failed.  How do I find out why?

I back up my iphone and ipod touch to the same Mac.  I've never had a problem before with either one.  My Mac treats each one as an individual device.  The error message popped up at the end of my ipod sync this afternoon.
I took your advice and checked my backup folder. There were several files shown and I moved what I thought was the correct backup file to another location and synced my ipod.  No problem.  I then checked the old backup file and noticed that the file name did not match (they were significantly different).  I probably moved the wrong backup file.  So I moved that file back, re-synced both devices and everything worked great.
So, I can't say for certain that your advice was correct.  It may have been a glitch and all I needed to do was to re-sync instead of panicing.  But I appreciate the quick response.
    Thanks Illaass.

  • Time Machine "backup failed" Backing up to Time Capsule (first backup)

I just received my iMac (24", 3.04 ghz, 4 gig ram) a few days ago...my firs Mac, after over 20 years with pc's. All working fairly well, as I try to learn the new format. Attempted my first backup last night using Time Machine, backing to Time Capsule. As I went to bed, it stated it was "preparing". This morning it stated "backup failed". "Time Capsule error". The networking aspects of Time Capsule are working without a problem. Unfortunately, the error message is vague and I'm definitely illiterate when it comes to much of the properties of a Mac. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed in investigating the problem? Thanks!!

Well, I greatly appreciate the earlier advice. I have learned much in my reading. Of course, now with my "tinkering", I determined that the Time Capsule was not formatted to OS extended (journaled) as was my Macintosh harddrive. (Don't really understand why it would not come that way). I attempted to format using disk utility, now it doesn't show up in that application and under FINDER (shared devices), it is detailed as "sharepoint". I read elsewhere that it was recommended to use airport utility to reformat to OS Extended (journaled). Anyway, of course, now I've gone full circle and am comfused as to the proper way to have it formatted properly and recognized by disk utility. As such, currently I cannot use it for backup.
Frequently, I'm my worsed enemy! Thanks again for the advice.

  • Time machine backup fails; error creating folder. Western Digital drive requires password which is perhaps/likely the issue. I can't eliminate the password/encryption.

Time Machine backup fails on new WD external drive (My Passport Studio); error creating folder (after several hours of Time Machine apparently working).
Background: I purchased a Western Digital drive from an Apple Store to use for Time Machine backup.  I followed the Western Digital instructions that came with the drive for Mac. I didn't get the Time Machine prompt which the instructions indicated I would receive--namely to select whether I want to encrypt my Time Macine backups. (I already have a Time Machine backup I use at another location, which is perhaps why I didn't receive a prompt.)
I decided to install the Western Digital utilities and security software that comes on the disk--with a view to potentially encrypting the disk (since I still wanted to have an encrypted backup since I was mobile). I forgot that (from experience 2-years previous) that I shouldn't install Western Digital software because it just makes life really complicated.
I tried several times to do a Time Machine backup with failures each time (error creating the backup folder). I tried to get help from WD but I don't think the technicians were following what my issue was. Potentially I was not helpful in explaining it. I deleted the WD applications from my system after the first contact with WD. However the problem persisted--I still had an encrypted hard drive. After three phone sessions with three different WD techs I still could not get a solution. (By the second call I was not at all interested in having an encrypted drive--I just wanted to format and restore the drive to an unencrypted state so that I could have SOME kind of Time Machine backup.)
I still don't have a solution--either to get Time Machine working with the WD encryption/password on the drive, or to remove the encryption so I can backup. Right now my options are to return the drive to the Apple Store -- or get a return authorization from WD. Seems crazy since the drive is fine and I have the working password.

Never install "helpful software" provided by WD and Seagate (or any HD mfg.)
All such stuff is fluff and nonsense that interferes with normal HD operation.
Always when you buy a new HD, format it for Mac and then use it to TM backup or clone a HD, or archive data.
Less is more on HD new out of box.  A "blank brick", no fluff and cotton candy software

  • Problems upgrading from LMS 3.0 to LMS 3.2 - the backup fails.

I'm upgrading from LMS 3.0 to LMS 3.2 on Solaris. I've met all of the prereq's, patches, etc. It keeps failing on the Backup...It claims I need 15 Gig for the backup. The backup directory I'm using (/opt/backup) has 35 Gig free, so that shouldn't be the issue.

I've tried this multiple times and each time it appears to fail on a different file/folder in the sw_images directory. This is our FTP directory where we store lots of IOS images for download. I've removed each of these files it errors out on and it keeps failing. I just removed all files from the sw_images folder and am trying the backup again now.
I'm attaching the backup.log which contains the failure information for each backup I've tried in the past two days.
My main question is...can I skip this backup somehow? I've got another LMS 3.0 system that I can export everything I need from. Skipping the backup isn't an option on the install/upgrade? It gives me the option to quit the install or try the backup again.
    Thanks,

You can skip the backup with a hidden option:
    ./setup.sh -b nobackup
However, I wouldn't feel comfortable until figuring out why the backup has been failing, ostensibly because tar is running into the 255-char limit (100 for the filename and 155 for the path), a result of the many iterations of the following:
    sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/cisco_configs/sw_images/

  • Time Machine backup fails about once a week

I'm backing up to an external firewire drive.
About once a week, a Time Machine backup will fail.
I have no other information on the failure. There are no errors in any of the log in
Console.app. Time Machine simply reports "Last Backup Failed", and that's it.
    I looked through system.log, and found this;
    system.log:Nov 25 08:59:51 kilroy-3 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3897]: Error: (-43) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/mauroj/Notebook/.DS_Store to /Volumes/TimeMachine/Backups.backupdb/kilroy/2008-11-25-085528.inProgress/D2D3A 24A-4AC2-4BBE-B95B-70F6C122AA07/MacIntosh HD/Users/mauroj/Notebook

I'm not 100% sure this is the reason Time Machine failed and aborted, but it correlates
time-wise. So it appears backupd (aka Time Machine) is reporting it can not or will not
copy one particular file. There is no indication as to why.
This is buggy behavior for backup software. The message is broken, because there's no
"why" to the failure mode, and the software is broken, because it should be able to
recover from this, complete the backup, and simply report that a specific file was not
    backed up.
If I can, I'll file a bug. Note to Apple - We RELY on backups. Stuff like this in the backup
software does NOT make us feel warm and fuzzy.
    /jim

this is a known bug introduced by 10.5.3 update. lots of people have it (including myself). it's been acknowledged by apple. there is nothing you can or should do about it yourself. we have to wait for a fix from apple.

  • ICloud backup failed message

Trying to enable iCloud on my new iPhone, I keep getting a message that states:  iCloud Backup Failed: There was a problem enabling iCloud storage.  Why is this?  Also, I can't seem to sync my Address book contacts to iPhone as well.  Any advice?
    Thanks,

    Same problem here...
I just upgraded my 3GS to iOS5 and signed into iCloud using my Apple ID...
Every time I click "Back Up Now" in the iCloud preferences on the iPhone, I get "There was a problem completing the backup.  Please try again later."
On my wife's iPhone 4, I just performed a back up and there were no errors.  I tried this also on my wife's iPad 2 and it worked perfectly.
    I have tried the following:
    1. In iTunes, when my phone is connected, I selected "Back up to iCloud" on the summary tab
    2. Reset my phone using the steps in the above post
    3. Deleted the iCloud account on my iPhone and logged in again
    4. Tried to backup from 3 different wireless networks
None of the steps above fixed the issue which has been going on all day for me...
Any other help would be great - thanks!

It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x

  • Time Machine initial backup fails OS 10.5 with no reason but 'bus error'

I ran into an error on the last system update and had to go back to Leopard 10.5 just to see my stuff. I managed to move my home directory into the newly installed system and all my files are intact. Now I'm trying to get a Time Machine backup before I proceed (my initial mistake was not keeping up with them in the first place).
I had some trouble early on and at one point decided to reformat the external drive (a Fantom Drives GreenDrive, usb, 500Gb). I formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as recommended, no partitions, and then tried my first initial Time Machine backup.
It predictably spent a long time 'preparing...' and I followed along in the system log. Eventually, the copying began but early on (within the first 45 min) the backup failed with almost no indications in the log as to why. I've pasted the system log below.
One thought I had was that it was weird that there was an automatic request for backup at 12:36:54. I also included the CrashReport, but I can't make any sense out of it.
    any ideas?

I should have added that I've been through about half a dozen sites (including sanctioned apple sites) and their recommendations for getting Time Machine to work properly. I did format the drive once (with extended journaled format and GUID partition scheme, but I didn't zero it out. I'm trying that now and I'll try TM again in about 4 hours.
This morning I tried turning Time Machine's automatic backups off (moved the slider to off in the preferences pane) and manually started a backup (right-clicking the TM icon in the dock and selecting "Backup Now"). It ran further along than before, but stopped again. This time, it gave an error, and I've pasted the log below. I looked but didn't find much helpful on "error 11."

  • Backups failing with error 19: the backup disk could not be resolved, or there was a problem mounting it

    Hello all,
Doubt this issue relates to a recent and ugly issue but sharing anyways (resolved thanks to a user here: LaPastenague)
Time Capsule won't backup if Modem (Motorola SB6121) attached
This was on Feb 10th resolved. Few days later I upgraded to Yosemite.  Backups were working fine since.
Yesterday I happen to notice my last backup was 5 days ago.  I looked in the console logs and saw:
2/25/15 3:55:06.127 PM com.apple.backupd[2777]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Paul;AUTH=SRP@Time%20Capsule._afpovertcp._tcp.local./Data

I called Apple.  Their front line was clueless. He suggested resetting the TC (latest "tower" model btw") which then a backup kicked off YEAH
But the next hour it failed
Called Apple again, this time to Sr Advisor.  He suggested factory reset of the TC and set up again.  Also first backup worked then rest failed
Third call to Apple useless also.  He was asking questions I didn't feel relevant.  He also was asking me to reset the TC which I told him was done 2 hours prior. He asked me to reboot which I could NOT at that time.
I begged him to collect data to submit to engineering, which will take days to get a reply.
So I thought I would throw this out to the community....
TC Is NEW (replaced from last issue).  Mac is 8 months old (iMac 27"), Os is Yosemite,  TC also new (latest model)
    Thanks...

Yosemite is problematic on two fronts.. Networking and Time Machine.. so the combo of doing both with a Time Capsule is like bugs on bugs.
Here is my standard list.. but your problem maybe difficult to resolve.. and my suggestion is simple.. until Apple get their act together and fix TM.. buy Carbon Copy Cloner and use that for your backup. It is solid and reliable.. even better if you use USB drive plugged into the computer and do a bootable clone.. because then you have a backup that is able to be tested for full functionality 2min after the end of the backup.
This also starts from a factory reset.. but the reason for it is to change the configuration which is much more easily handled with factory reset to begin.. the instructions are there.. because this is my standard reply.. this is not uncommon!!
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the Mac itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. What I list here is good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
This user has had success and a few others as well.

  • Time Capsule backup failed error -43?

Hi and Thanks to Anyone in Advance!
Below is the Time Capsule Error Log I get when doing a Time Machine Backup, wirelessly, on my 2T Time Capsule HD/Router.
Initial Setup and Backup done via ethernet, flawlessly, two months ago. Subsequent backups worked until about three days ago (Why, I have not a clue!)
Often, using Airport Utility, the Time Capsule does not appear. Turning off Computer Airport and on again, the disk becomes magically available for backup. Similar problem with wireless LAN printer...truly a pain. the printer needs to be deleted, and then added again in Print/Fax Preferences. (HP PhotoSmart C7250)
I used Disk Utility" on my Computer HD with a repair permissions, then performed a TC reset, physically, and reconfigured the TC on the LAN, trying a new name "gotyourback" for the backup. Backup begins every time, but keeps failing after about five minutes.
Hope this helps others with similar problem...
    Again,
    Thanks!

I have the TC in bridge and it is picking up the domain from my router.. if your using the TC as the main router then you should have entries for gotbackup.local
You are running SL still?? Or lion?
I thought of simply restoring the computer's settings to what they were 4-5 days ago, via Time Machine.
The issue is network.. so restoring will not fix it.
But so is my overdue dentist appointment...really not looking forward to either!
    My condolances to your dentist.
I think you need to dig a bit harder to get the cause.
Most importantly are you getting IP via dhcp from the TC?
Do you have ethernet and wireless connected at the same time?

  • Moving to a new Mac - TM Backup Fails

    Greetings,
I just retired my older PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver) and used migration assistant to move all my data to the new iMac - worked perfectly.
Before I made this transfer, I ran a final time machine backup on the PowerMac.
I figured I'd just be able to connect my external drive to the new iMac, run a "backup now" and life would be good.
Wrong - time machine comes back with a "backup failed" error, and under more info says that "the backup volume cannot be found".
I suspect this has something to do with physically changing hardware, but I cant seem to figure out how to get time machine setup to backup the new iMac.
Would appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks

OK, so it's apparent that TM associates with a physical machine and that's why I couldn't resume incremental backups on my new iMac.
Just used disk utility to completely erase/reformat the external drive, and I'm successfully running a full backup right now.
A bit more of a hassle than just being able to resume incremental backups, but no big deal really........

  • Time Machine size discrepancy / backup fail

Hi! For a few weeks now my Time Machine backups have ceased to work, with an error that they are too big for the drive. While I only have a 500GB drive, my total size of the backup has always been well within that (thanks to the exclusions I have set up, mostly for my video projects).
I've finally had a chance to look through my files and determine that the only truly gargantuan folder was indeed my Videos folder, but it is excluded.
Here's the nub of my problem / question:
My Time Machine panel under Options says the estimated size of the full backup is 274 GB. But backups fail with a message that the backup requires 849GB! That's way more than the 20% overhead I know TM requires in addition to the backup size.
This seems to be the key to why my backups are failing.
Can anyone suggest a course of action?
    Thanks!
    Adam

ARGH! Would you believe that - only days after I fixed it with the combo update - it happened again?
Well, it did. "The backup requires 847.90 GB but only 93.79 GB are available."
847 GB? The "Estimated size of full backup" in the exceptions window is 276.88 GB.
    Just like before.
I did run a Repair Permissions after the combo update as suggested... just to rule that out...
Just in case it's at all helpful, I'm including the info from the Dashboard widget that reveals Time Machine log info - first for the last successful backup, then for the first one to fail.
