Why can't I import an iMovie clip (.MOV) into iTunes?

After importing HD video (from a Canon Vixia HV40) into iMovie 11 (v 9.04) at 960x540 resolution, you get a bunch of .mov files. Does anyone know why those .mov files, as they come out of the import process, will not import into iTunes?
Here are the details. My brother wanted to put a small one onto his iPad. I told him the simplest way (or so I thought) to do it would be to import the .mov file into iTunes (v 10.6.1) and then sync his iPad. There was no need to make a project from the single clip, then share it. However, iTunes will not import any of the .mov files made with the iMovie import. Does anyone know why? This happens on my iMac (core i7) and his (core i5). Of course, if I open the .mov file in QuickTime Player (v 10.1) then export to a .m4v file (export setting "iPad, iPhone & Apple TV"), the new file imports into iTunes just fine. In case iTunes thinks you shouldn't be importing clips from the iMovie events folder, I dragged the clip to the desktop and tried the import, but that did not work either.
I guess what this comes down to is given that iMovie, QuickTime Player and iTunes all come from Apple, why can iMovie and QuickTime Player read the file while iTunes cannot? I would think the same code would be in all three products (do the iMovie and QuickTime Player developers refuse to share, while the iTunes developers are lazy?).

I had this problem also, only the .m4v files could not be imported either! The strange thing was I was able to do this task with other home vids in the past without issue. I simply shut everything down and rebooted at this point as a last dithch effort to avoid a trip to the Apple store and then it worked - itunes was able to accept the import.

  • Why can't I import two particular MP3 files into iTunes?

I went into the Importing menu of my iTunes preferences and verified that it is using the MP3 encoder. But when I drag and drop the mp3 file from my desktop to iTunes it will NOT import it! Ugh! Any suggestions?

What is the difference between adding a music file and importing one?
The KB article "iTunes: About the Add to Library, Import, and Convert functions" explains it pretty well.
It plays fine in QuickTime. When I do a "get info" it shows MP3 Audio File as the "Kind".
Format: MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 11.025 kHz
    Data Rate: 128.27 kbits/sec
At first glance those look normal values for an mp3 file. The sample rate of 11.025 kHz is unusually low for music though (a common value is 44.100).
iTunes is capable of converting a file into mp3 with sample rates between 8.000 and 48.000 kHz, so it should? recognize the file as valid and add it to the library.
Although 'MP3' is a standard, there are many ways to create one. It seems that sometimes it results in files that iTunes doesn't like, especially VBR MP3's. I personally have not encountered such "trouble mp3's" yet.
If you still can't add your mp3 to iTunes, try to export it in QuickTime (use Sound to AIFF) and then add it to iTunes.
Alternatively convert it using Max. It's not an easy to use application at first look, but once you are familiar with it, you'll probably appreciate it as a powerful app. for importing CDs and converting files.

  • Why can't I import old imovies into idvd?

Why can't I import old imovies into idvd?

I have 68 GB free and the movie is a small one. The iDVD file is on my hard drive and in the dock.
Today I found a work around for this problem.  While I cannot open the original movie, I can access the clips in the media folder.  I put the clips together and made a new movie.   And I can import this to iDVD by going to "share" in the menu and selecting iDVD.

  • Is there any way to import my OWN DVD movies into iTunes and my video iPod?

I just purchased the new 30 GB video iPod last week, and although I have already purchased a few movies from the iTunes store, I wanted to know if there was a way to import a DVD movie from my own DVD library like we can with our own music CDs?
    Thanks,

"That's too bad, because these are movies (DVDs) that I own and have purchased legally myself. How is that different from importing your own purchased CDs into iTunes? Seems like a double standard to me."
About "legally owning" the DVDs - Yes, I understand, and I'm figuring that most folks who want to put their DVDs onto their iPod are owning the movies legally (or, at least, it appears so).
That's not really the issue here, though.
The problem is, there is an encryption that is written onto regular, copyrighted DVDs (i.e., movies). In order to get that onto your iPod, you will have to use software on your computer that breaks that encryption, and makes the file into some more "normal" format, like say, MP4.
This action can arguably be considered as illegal, in a sense, since you are removing the encryption that's on DVD, which is protecting it from being easily copied, and transferred around. (which would be illegal).
This is a bit different than CDs, since, although they are copyrighted too, the songs are usually not in a protected format.
If you have a song that you've purchased from the iTunes Store, and you want to break into that "protected" file format, that's the same kind of issue as the DVD ripping.
(Notice that the Hosts included that into the ADUA as well, right along with DVD ripping.)
...It's quite an interesting kind of subject, isn't it?

  • Why can't I access my iMovie clips?

Okay, so I have been working with iMovie without any issues for some time now. I recently got a number of large video files (18 files each approx. 24 minutes long), and I started uploading them one at a time. I got the first eight files in without a problem by doing that. The remaining nine that I wanted to upload, I decided to just select them all and import them at once. It took about four hours to do this. When it was finally done, not only were the files I uploaded blacked out without sound or the ability to use them, but so were the previous files I'd imported and used in a project already. Now, when I go to my projects, the one I made using those files doesn't even open and is completely inaccessable.
Is there any way to fix this without deleting and reimporting the files? Because that took me ten hours and I'm thisclose to just giving up on it.
If it helps at all, I'm using a Macbook Pro with OS X and iMovie '11 version 9.0.4

that I guess is the problem
.mp4 is no Video-Codec but a container that can hold ones that iMovie can or cn not use
iMovie is very picky reg Codecs
QuickTime-player can open o many more
open the files that works in QuickTime player and then Inspector and note the Video format and frame rate.
then open the ones that do not work and see what goes for them
then convert them to the Codec and frame rate the works.

  • Can I import AVI QuickTime home movies into iTunes

I have some home movies I would like to place into my iTunes. I take the icon of the movie, and I place it over the iTunes and a plus sign appears, however when I release the mouse, the movie does not imports into iTunes.
I have also tried to go to the iTunes menu, choosing file, add to library and choosing the file. But it does not work ether. I still do not see that the video has been imported into my iTunes.
Can any one tell me what am I doing wrong?
I thought it would be easy to import my videos to iTunes.
The music videos I have downloaded from the iTunes store have downloaded well. Are they a different format?
    Hope you can help.

I don't think iTunes will take AVI files directly. You will have to convert it.

  • Correct way of importing an iMovie 6 movie into Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Any correct way to import an iMovie 6 HD movie into Final Cut Express for further editing?
    I tried.
    1. I Exported the iMovie, at Full Quality and it made a Quicktime version of that movie.
    2. I then Imported this Quicktime version into Final Cut Express.
    3. The audio was smooth, but at regular intervals, the video freezes for a second (and then moves on).
    4. The movie plays smoothly back in its original iMovie incarnation and in its Quicktime incarnation. Only in Final Cut Express is there this intermittent freezing. Stop and start.
    5. I have Final Cut Express 3.5.1 and iMovie 6 HD.
    Thank you,
    - Ross

"Full Quality" QuickTime export from iMovie gives you a DV stream which will need rendering in FCE. Rather than "Full Quality," choose "Expert Settings," and then the following:
    Video
    DV-DVCPRO - NTSC (assuming you're in USA)
    Sound
    48kHz
    16-bit

  • Why can't I import photos from my CannonZR70 into iPhoto 08?

Since updating to Mac OS X 10.7.3 I can't see my CannonZR 70 in iPhoto so I can import my Project Linus pictures. I have iPhoto 08. I cannot find the Source so I can check to see if my camera is supported. Help!!!
Do I need to update to iLife? (I was able to take a picture with my iPhone 3G and import it... but want to use the Cannon)

It worked just fine until I did the update to get to 10.7.3.
I am using the card option on the Canon when I take pictures of the blankets.
When I go to the VCR setting, usually the import operation would come onto the screen in iPhoto 08. Now nothing happens.
I have always had one end of the cable hooked to the DV port on the ZR70 and the other to the firewire port.
Thank you for any advice or assistance,
    Gayle

  • Why can't I import non photographic jpg images into iPhoto?

I'd really love to use this feature as I have some vector based jpgs I'd loive to sue in a calendar! They are now jogs but when I try to import them it says
" the file could not be imported" import failed

What color profile are these pics? This kind of issue is often caused by importing CYMK or Greyscale pics to iPhoto which only supports RGB.
Try open the pic in Preview, then use the Tools -> Inspector to check the color profile.
