Why do links open in new windows, not tabs, even when that option is selected?

Since update to v. 6 and now 7.01, clicking on links opens a new instance of Firefox instead of a new tab. In Tools\Options\Tabs. I have selected "open new window in tab instead" and it has no effect.
What am I missing?

Thanks for the post. Unfortunately, while running in FF in safe mode may be doing the trick and thus implies an extension (though not necessarily), I haven't added any new extensions. So it is likely a problem introduced by FF since v. 6 or so. I suppose it could be that the extensions themselves need updating by their creators.
Regardless it is all very time-consuming and frustrating, especially for something that one would think would be readily fixable.

I'm making a website in Dreamweaver CS3 and I have 3 frames. One on the left named 'links', one at the top called 'Scrollingbar' and then the main content window called "contentframe".
I have created images as links in the left hand frame and wanted them to load in "contentframe" when clicked. I have done this on a website before but for some reason, it isn't working this time. The code all looks fine to me but when clicked, instead of loading in "contentframe", it opens a new page/tab in a browser with the page I want loaded in "contentframe". Here's my code for my links:

Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying but I can only design a basic site in HTML, that's as far as my knowledge goes and the frames layout has worked well for me in the past (see http://www.ttotmcomedy.com/KKBB%20website/). It keeps the links always on the left meaning it's easy to navigate and I can keep event information in the top bar at all times, wherever the user is on the website. I also achieved top 10 ranking in Google. I unfortunately don't have the time to dedicate to learning to code in a different language and neither can I afford to pay somebody to do it...

Firefox takes around 30 seconds to open a new window (not tab) when i click on the icon in my start menu or taskbar why?

When i click on the firefox icon in the menu it takes around 30 seconds to open firefox and i have no idea why.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

When right clicking to open link in new window (not tab) foxfire immediately switches windows rather than opening new window in background

Just updated to foxfire 15.0, and now each time I open a link in a new window foxfire will switch immediately to that newly opened window rather than opening the new window in the background as it did before I updated to 15.0. I am aware of the option to check or uncheck switching to new tabs immediately, but I am speaking of opening a link in a new window, not tab. Any help is greatly appreciated.

In Firefox 5 links with target="_blank" don't open in new window or tab. Is there a way to make them do that?

I've search some info about this and it seems like there's a lot of people that are annoyed by links opening in new window/tab and that the 'target="_blank"' is not valid in strict XHTML. I'm guessing this could be reasons why Firefox 5 ignores the 'target="_blank"'. But in some cases you really want to open a new widow, in my case I'm using a flash application and want to open links in new windows from there and then the ctrl-click doesn't work. In our organisation the IT department deploy Firefox updates with certain settings and limitations, in the tap-options the checkbox for opening new windows in new tabs where checked but disabled. They made some changes to make this checkbox enabled and now it works as expected if it's check new windows open i new tabs and if it's not in new windows. There is no plus sign and going into optins and changing settings has not worked. I have uninstall FF and reinstall-keeping my personalization-and that was no help.

I guess I'm not explaining myself fully. I have a home page designation in firefox preferences that starts firefox up with 5 sites. that pretty fills up my screen with tabs.
At some point I want to initiate another WINDOW in firefox (NOT a tab). I would like to be able to open up a window that ONLY has ONE tab, or as if there were only one site designated as the home page. This gives me a workspace that has my most useful sites available in tabs in one window, and also another WINDOW that I can move around in and even create more tabs without messing up my primary set of TABS (in my primary window). I see how this might not be doable without doing what I do now, which is open up a new window, and then close tabs until the new window just has one tab for me to work from.

Thanks but Command 0 on a Mac only makes a temporary change to that one page. The link you provided doesn't show how to make a permanent change. Do you know how to permanently change this so I don't have to do it to every new page?

Firefox will not open a new window for a website when it is supposed to and then will not close properly. I have un-installed and re-installed and problem persists, why? How is it solved?

When I go on to some websites and click on certain things it wants to open a new window to display the information etc.
I.E. On an agency job search site I click to do a detailed job search which should open in a new window, but this will not happen now on my Firefox.
Firefox was working perfectly ok on Saturday 11th September but for some unknown reason has acted up since Sunday.
There have been no Windows updates which could effect this and the laptop is otherwise working perfectly ok.
Nothing has changed from Saturday Night to Sunday Night that I can see.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.

Why does clicking a link open a new window with a spam site on it?

Happens randomly I will click a link that I want open on new tab it opens but a random site will open in a new window. These sites that open are spam sites that I do not want. I have uninstalled deleted firefox and reinstalled it nothing is fixing this issue. My other computer has the same problem. Does not happen all the time its just random sometime i dont even have to click a link and a new window will open with dating sites poker sites just crap I did not want opened.

Recomend getting adblock for firefox.
if you still get unrelated links you should consider scanning for Malware on you computer (this could be an installed program or an extension). I would recommend Malwarebytes as it is somewhat free to use.

Is that link for some external website or some pdf file etc?
When you create a button on a skin and ask it open a file it should do that in the web browser.
If the link is for a website etc then it might give you the following link but you can still open the url in a new window by clicking on 'Open this content in a new window".

Hi guys, I want to make a link in a flash website that I am
working on and that link is going to lead to a video hosted on
another site. Is there a way to make the window that opens for it
new and not the same one that is being used? I mean force this?
Currently if I let it load in the same window when the user
comes back he or she is going to have reload the whole site again,
which may not be long but I think that would be kind of

I have been trying to get it work and when I make the text
and then go options and tell it where to go, it works. Works in the
test preview that is. When I try it out as if I was using it on the
web it gives me an error about working unsafely and the link doesnt
work.
I have tried to apply actions and behavior to the text but I
cannot on either.
It should probably be known that while I use flash, I only
use it so much as to do some basic things, I'm no whiz with it. Not
yet :)
