Why do my slow motion clips look so bad in iDVD6?

I'm not sure if this is an iMOVIE or iDVD issue but when I burn DVDs the slow motion sections look really jittery; much worse than they were in my movies that were made from the programs I installed in 2004. Any suggestions?

Hi Chris:
Pretty much an iMovie problem..read this discussion and pay special attention to anything Matti Haveri says..

  • Searching for a low-cost plug for doing better slow motion clips.

Where can I find a low-cost or free plug-in for doing better slow motion clips? I produce alot of sports videos and use FCPHD but am looking for better quality. I am not necessarily looking for time-remapping (it confuses the ** out of me). Just want to simply slow down clips and not be as choppy as FCP turns out.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Slow motion clips drastically reduce editing performance

I wondered why one project was slower than a similar sized other project (20 min). I moved the project cursor from the end of the project systemmatically towards the start. As I moved it, response got slower and slower. This was the clue. I started to set 50% clips back to 100% as I went backwards through the project and performace rapidly increased. I had both sound and video tracks in the project. Therefore, the more slow motion clips you use the slower editing will become as you progress towards the start of your project.

Did they import as a single long clip?
I would recommend dragging the long DV clip into MPEG Streamclip (a free app from Squared 5).
You can drag the long clip into MPEG Streamclip and divide the long clip into multiple shorter clips. You might divide it into logical events (all clips shot on the same day) or you could make a new clip every time record/pause button is pressed.
Move the playhead to the in point and press I, move the playhead to the Out point and press O. Then File/Export to DV. Repeat until you have all the clips.
Hint: If you know the date and time the clips were shot, give the files a name in the form clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext where hh is hours in 24 hour time and ext is the current file extension (in your case DV).
Then use FILE/IMPORT/Movies... to import into iMovie as separate events.
That should give you good performance.

  • Any tips on making slow motion clips "smoother" (interpolation)?

I was not able to find this in the documentation.
I need to render a sequence with a clip that is at 40% speed (slow motion), this clip is of a time lapse weather (clouds) video.
I would like to know what type of interpolation Final Cut Pro uses (if any) and if there are any methods to improve the fludity of clips that are set to slow motion. Right now the section of the rendered video where the slow motion clip is (the clouds) appear a bit "jumpy' and I would like to have them a bit "smoother".

Thanks, I've tried a couple from everyone's suggestions; from frame blend, to motion blur, and to the optical flow (in Motion).
The problem is that with cloud time lapse video in slow motion there is still some level of "jumpyness" from one frame (one time lapse frame, not frame in the video file) to the other.
With optical flow, it is quite nice, but it makes it move incredibly smooth from one frame, but then pauses, and then incredibly smooth to the next, so it's not really usable for cloud time lapse video.
I'm still hoping for some kind of better interpolation effect that I haven't found yet.

  • Applying Video Filters to Slow Motion Clips

Now I have done this before many times. Why is it when I apply a video filter to a clip( that is 50% speed already in my sequence) I can not see the video filter when I open up the effects tool to adjust the effect? For example when I put a glow effect on the clip and I adjust the brightness and I do not see anything happening it is as if the effect is not there. I know there is a simple solution to this

    Sure Tom,
I edited shots in my sequence, it is a montage of slow motion shots each around 1sec. long at 50% speed. I want to letterbox the shots and treat each with a filter. Strobe them or glow effect, etc. I am opening the effects window and dragging the filter icon onto the clip on my sequence. Then I double click the clip on my time line and open it in the viewer to adjust the filter. When I do this I can not see the filter effect. It's as if there is not an effect on the clip. Is it because I am trying to put a filter on a clip that is at 50% speed? Do I have to put it on the clip before I change the speed?

  • Ripple edit on slow motion clip

If I have built a timeline and want to insert a clip then slow motion it, the whole thing ripple edits. If I make a new channel thats empty and do the same the whole thing ripple edits, I end up having to lock all my channels below then do it, is there a better way because it seems wrong and adds time to my job,
    regards
    daz

I don't think moving it up a track works, as you've found...and I don't believe it's a setting in FCP that can be changed.
You can move it to the end of the timeline and make the adjustment or as stated, do this in the viewer.
Another option is to create a 'Working' sequence and do it there. This is the way I do it, in case the timing doesn't work, you can quickly make adjustments in the alternate timeline.

  • Slow motion clips keep grabbing from next clip

I am editing a short piece and wanted about ten scenes in a row to be 50% speed. When I apply this at least a third of the clips grab frames from the next clip so there is this repeat as they play at the end of the clip before then and then are replayed when their actual clip is playing. If I go to normal speed this stops.

This may be fixed in the latest iMovie updates I hope.

  • Slow motion clip upload - found solution

Hey All. I always carrry my iphone with me, so its my go-to video camera, most of the time now. I love sharing stories with it. I've found I can upload to Youtube or Vimeo stratight out of my iPhone and adjust the 120 fps playback speed using iMovie. I'm amazing. I took a train from Vancouver to Seattle and then on to the Ferry to the islands, so I had an opportunity to shoot through the windows of the train, bus and on the ferry. I tried several ways to stablize the shots, and my best results came from holding my Iphone with both hands lightly and just a few inches from my face.
Even the vibration on the feery seems to have been stablized much better than the 4S I used before.
this is my iPhone 5S + iMovie in the 5S. Much faster editing then my 4S, and the compressed quality stands up on 1080p TV.

Love to read your feedback on how this might be improved. So far, I'm happy.

  • Why does my exported mp4 file look so bad when it is viewed in adobe acrobat pdf file?

I have embedded an mp4 (exported from premier pro cs6) video file into adobe acrobat and its not sharp viewing of my video anymore. It was a sharp video when viewed in both premier and the exported mp4 files, but once embedded in acrobat it looses sharpness, anyone know what the problem might be? Could my settings  in adobe acrobat be wrong? I would think the problem is in adobe acrobat since the exported mp4 video views crisp and clear before its embedded, any ideas to assure sharpness with my video after its embedded into the adobe acrobat pdf?
Hoping someone has an answer to this, I think my problem might lie within the adobe acrobat settings????
or maybe there is no way around and I need to expect this video not to look as crisp and clear after I embed it into acrobat.... as it is when viewing in premier pro, mp4, etc.????
Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated.
Someone Im sure is taking theri exported premier files and embedding them to create pdf files? Would love to hear if anyone has encountered this issue.
Thanks so much in advance for any help offered.

    Hi Dave,
I just completed a test and comparison between the two PDF's,
compared the file as you suggested with the floating option and changing setting to actual size of the original premier pro / mp4 file size and
the old pdf that did not utilize the floating and file size option.
I do notice a slight difference. The PDF with the floating window with the match of the media clips original dimensions appears to be crisper.
I will be having the final pdf document set utilizing this method for the embeded mp4 movie and hope that the department doing this (next stage of this job) will agree that this is better to use your steps to embed all the video files into a pdf.
Thanks so much for your time.
Hope you had a happy holiday, and hope you have a very happy and healthy new year.
    Thanks, Amy

  • Why do FONTS, drawRECT & drawCIRCLE Classes look so bad in iOS?

Hello, these look great on PC and MAC deployments. But they are from Adobe standard of rich graphcs that I am used to? It must be what i am doing wrong.
Here are some screen shots off iPAD. The triangles are blown up. but you get the iodea. look at my circles on bottom image. So not clean. Do I need to do more to draw classes? I will post code shortly.
Do I need to move to a framework then in FLEX to get better graphics? Or maybe I need to use starling I hear alot about that. And, can I use typekit with actionscript?
Sorry I am not the coder just the deigner. My code team can not fix. They don't know the problem.
    Thanks

Hi and again thanks for your input! Attached is the actionscript code that is making wobbly circles. So, without implenmenting bitmaps how do I make the circles round using actionscript code.
    And again, thank you.

  • Why does pictures saved as desktop looks so bad?

I stretch and looks distorted. Center and picture is npt cenyered-missing tp, bottom, and sides?

    Adrian
Basically it's been built at 2268x1268, and I've resized it to 1024x768 (for PAL 16:9).
First problem is your file size. Check this info from DVDSP User manual
PAL 16:9 is 720x576 rectangular pixels. You must make your design in a 1024x576 canvas and resize it to 720x576 prior importing in DVDSP. Don't let DVDSP resize your graphics,it makes a very bad job.
Try this and come back !
By the way, I cannot see/download the image.
    Hope that helps !

  • Slow motion jerkiness when rendered to DVD

I've upgraded to iMovie HD 6 and I am working on projects that I started in iMovie 4. This has happened because I am working on 5 or 6 projects at the same time and I have only now got to the point where I want them on DVD.
All slow motion clips look fine in iMovie, but when they are rendered to DVD they are incredibly jerky. BUT, not all of them. This seems ridiculous, if they were all jerky OK, but only some of them.
Does anybody have a solution, or do I have to re-install iMovie 5.
Please don't suggest JSE software as there are far too many clips to be exporting and re-importing.
    IMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As a bug, some early iMovie HD version (AFAIR v5)didn't deinterlace slo-mo clips. This produced terrible shaky motion on an interlaced TV if the source material was interlaced.
Later versions fixed this. If this is the case, then you must re-render those clips, re-import and render them or use JES Deinterlacer to deinterlace the shaky clips.

  • Problem with slow motion reversed clips

    Hi
I've imported clips into iMovie 11 and can apply slow motion through Clip Adjustments. When I try to do both Slow Motion and Reverse all I get is a still clip. I tried both copying an existing Slow Motion clip and tried to reverse it and tried applying Reverse and Slow Motion at the same time to a normal clip without success. I've tried it with and without Stabilization. Any ideas?

You are not alone! But I have not found a way to resolve the problem either! Could it be a fps problem?

  • What is the suggested frame rate to record in for fast / slow motion processing from a clip recorded

I want to create a video however I only have 1 dslr camera and I want the ability to post process the clips I record to be either in slow motion or fast motion. I don't want to have to record something in 24fps then 60fps. is there an ideal frame rate for both. What are some of the best practices for this in regards to recording and post processing in Premiere Pro.
Example of fast and slow video. Thanks.
    http://vimeo.com/75259949

The ideal is to shoot in different frame rates, one for real time footage and one for fast or slow motion clips.  This is called under and overcranking.  It means you have to decide when shooting whether the clip will be real time or not.
Less than ideal is to shoot everything at one frame rate and then slow it down or speed it up later.  It's less than ideal because the effect is never as perfect as the ideal method.  Especially in PP, which does not do very well with slow motion to the point I recommend using After Effects instead.  (At least with 24 fps media.)
On a side note, you can help solve the horrible slow-motion problem:
