Slow motion clips keep grabbing from next clip

I am editing a short piece and wanted about ten scenes in a row to be 50% speed. When I apply this at least a third of the clips grab frames from the next clip so there is this repeat as they play at the end of the clip before then and then are replayed when their actual clip is playing. If I go to normal speed this stops.

This may be fixed in the latest iMovie updates I hope.

  • Slow motion and speedup during a single clip

Is there a way to take a single clip, and slow down portions of the clip, while speeding up other portions of the clip.
Is there a way to adjust playback speed using keyframes I guess is my basic question, so the start of the clip is slow motion, then the middle is played back at an accelerated or normal rate, then the end of the clip becomes slow motion again.
    -Roger

Yes, is the short answer. Using the time remapping feature in the "effects" panel (top center of the screen, second tab from the left) you can set certain portions of the clip to play back at normal speed, then slow it down in certain sections, and then speed it back up. You can also cut the clip using the razor tool (in the tools panel at bottom right of the screen) and just reduce the speed of that section of the clip. The downside to using the time remapping (if my memory serves me - don't take my word for it) is that you lose audio, but the transitions from normal to slow-mo and back are much smoother. Using the razor tool, you simply place the timeline indicator where you would like to begin the slow motion segment, then cut the clip with the razor tool, the repeat the process where you want the slow-mo section to end. Then, select the section that you want to play back in slow motion, and reduce the speed. This is the method that was used before the time remapping feature was available. The transitions are not at smooth, but you can keep audio for the sections where the speed isn't modified. Just be sure to select the "ripple edit" check box when you modify the speed/duration setting of the clip (right click the video clip to get the speed/duration setting dialog box).

  • Slow motion lost after sync from mac to iphone

    Hi,
I can capture videos in slow motion but those videos play at normal speed once Sync them via iTunes.
    1. Capture videos in slow motion.
    2. The videos first play in slow motion in the iPhone. There is a time line slider to move the slo-mo effect back and forth.
    3. I do a back-up via iTunes including videos.
    4. After syncing, the videos in the iPhone appear in one album called "Slo-Mo".
    5. In the thumbnail of the video clip I can see the small dial icon that all other slow motion videos have.
    6. Playing the video shows a normal speed clip without the timeline slider under the video frames view.
The videos DO retain the slo-mo "effect" in Aperture and iPhoto also. Not in the iPhone after syncing.
Any hints to solve this?  thanks

    iPhone 6 iOS8

    Hi,
iOS 8.1 didn't fix the issue so here is my workaround to " show-off " my slow motion clips:
I have tried to open the clips with iMovie in the iPhone.  ( I guess not everyone has iMovie installed...?)
So, you can create a new project in iOS iMovie and import the clip you want. Slow motion clips preserve the little dial icon so you can see which ones have the slo-mo effect. It will preserve the slow-motion sections of the original clip and will play "slow".
If for some magical reason your clip doesn't play "slow" in iOS iMovie click on the small "tachometer" icon and select the desired speed.
So. iMovie does know the clip has enough frames to play in slow motion... why the camera app doesn't ?
    good luck,
    jp

  • FCP 7. Best technique for slow motion

What is the best techique or plugin for effective slow motion?
Right-clicking on a clip and adjusting time is not good. I have tried sending to Motion and adjusting the timing there but it softens the image.
Is Twixtor the way to go??
    Thanks

I'm late to the party but somehow I ended up here.  I'm reteaching myself this now.  I remember Captain Mench had a solution for this on the ProVideoCoalition site at one point for taking 60i footage and conforming to 24p using Shake.  The key element was Optical Flow, Motion uses OF as you know.  But I've just been doing a bunch of tests all night with some 60p (59.94) that we shot last week.  The CrumplePop tut is the one I've been following for Motion 4 and some random youtube stuff using Time Warp for AE tests.  The consensus seems to be each technique, including Twixtor, has limitations depending on the footage. AE better in one instance, Motion/Shake/Boris Red in another, Twixtor generally better than everything but still with flaws.  Let alone the other factors like did you shoot 60p to begin with?  Was the shutter 1/60 or 1/1600?  Other great tidbits like  this slomo conversion chart and this other Motion tut, 3 steps and bang!  I gotta go to sleep, hope this helps.
Forgot this guy, of course he has some great tips from his friend on  using Twixtor.

  • First frame of new clip, last frame of previous clip bug

I'm coming across what seems to be a bug in Premiere Pro CS6. When I apply an effect or edit an After effects project in Premiere Pro, the clip next to it seems to get a frame of the video without the effect then it changes to the next clip.
So it goes Clip with effect on > Next clip with 1 frame of previous clip but without effect > Next Clip with whatever footage.
Hopefully this makes sense? It's a really annoying bug.. any ideas?

I see what you are trying to do, but i have the exact same problem as alex
Im positive when mine does it, either the effect doesnt apply on the last frame, or it takes that last frame and puts it at the start of the next clip. I am sure they are frames of the same clip and there is no timeline error, i have zoomed in and looked and checked alot.
This means i get an annoying flash of a frame from the previous clip over the start of the present one, i have restarted it and works fine, but after a while of editting, it just comes back again?
    Help much needed and appreciated?
    Thanks,
    Oliver

  • Smooth Slow Motion from 50 fps Clip in 50 fps Timeline

If I want 50% smooth slow motion from a 50 FPS video clip, I would normally ask PP to interpret that clip as 25 FPS - that works great.
If however I import the 50 FPS video clip and interprett it as 50 FPS, I would have to set the speed of the video clip in the timeline to 50% to get the same level of slow motion.
The question is - when I follow the latter method, does PP create new frames for the slow motion or is it clever enough to use all the frames from the original 50 FPS video clip? to put it another away, does PP always generate NEW frames for slow motion or does it try to use the frames we are attempting to ignore?
I've done some basic tests and so far I can't see any real difference between the two methods. This leads me to beleive PP is effectively using all of the original 50 frames when the 50 fps video clip is imported into a 50 fps timeline and then slowed down in the timeline by 50%. - if this is the case, well done PP!!! If this is not the case, then it would be a welcomed enhancement in future releases.
I guess what you are all wondering is why would I want to import a 50 fps video clip into a 50 fps timeline and then slow it down in the timeline - well, as a wedding Videographer, it is simply because some parts of the video need to be in slow motion and other parts like messages and speeches need to be interpreted at normal speed. If playback in the timeline is at normal speed, i find it simpler to slow down the "Walking Down the Isle" clips rather than having to speed up the speeaches and messages.
In short, when importing 50 fps video for smooth slow motion, are both the following methods equally effective in terms of smooth motion?
Method 1: Import the 50 fps video clip into 25 fps timeline
Method 2: import the 50 fps video clip into 50 fps timeline and set the speed of the video clip in the timeline to 50% - I'm assuming PP does not generate new frames and gets them from the original 50 fps file instead..
To put it another way, does PP ALWAYS attempt to generate new fromes when slowing down video in the timeline? When extra frames are available in the original video file, does PP try to get the extra frames from that file instead of generating new ones?

I recorded 2 video clips of the same scene. The camera was panning from right to left.
First video clip - recorded at 25 fps
second video clip - recorded at 50 fps
Both video clips recorded at the same panning speed of the same scene.
    1. If I import the 25 fps video into 25 fps timeline and slow it down by 50%, the exported video looks jerky.
    2. If I import the 50 fps video clip into 25 fps timeline, the exported video looks smooth motion.
    3. If I import the 50 fps video clip into 50 fps timeline, slow it down in the timeline by 50%, and export the video as 25 fps then the result is still smooth motion.
I've only done the experiment once and may have to repeat to be absolutely sure.

  • What is the suggested frame rate to record in for fast / slow motion processing from a clip recorded

I want to create a video however I only have 1 dslr camera and I want the ability to post process the clips I record to be either in slow motion or fast motion. I don't want to have to record something in 24fps then 60fps. is there an ideal frame rate for both. What are some of the best practices for this in regards to recording and post processing in Premiere Pro.
Example of fast and slow video. Thanks.
    http://vimeo.com/75259949

The ideal is to shoot in different frame rates, one for real time footage and one for fast or slow motion clips.  This is called under and overcranking.  It means you have to decide when shooting whether the clip will be real time or not.
Less than ideal is to shoot everything at one frame rate and then slow it down or speed it up later.  It's less than ideal because the effect is never as perfect as the ideal method.  Especially in PP, which does not do very well with slow motion to the point I recommend using After Effects instead.  (At least with 24 fps media.)
On a side note, you can help solve the horrible slow-motion problem:

  • Any tips on making slow motion clips "smoother" (interpolation)?

I was not able to find this in the documentation.
I need to render a sequence with a clip that is at 40% speed (slow motion), this clip is of a time lapse weather (clouds) video.
I would like to know what type of interpolation Final Cut Pro uses (if any) and if there are any methods to improve the fludity of clips that are set to slow motion. Right now the section of the rendered video where the slow motion clip is (the clouds) appear a bit "jumpy' and I would like to have them a bit "smoother".

Thanks, I've tried a couple from everyone's suggestions; from frame blend, to motion blur, and to the optical flow (in Motion).
The problem is that with cloud time lapse video in slow motion there is still some level of "jumpyness" from one frame (one time lapse frame, not frame in the video file) to the other.
With optical flow, it is quite nice, but it makes it move incredibly smooth from one frame, but then pauses, and then incredibly smooth to the next, so it's not really usable for cloud time lapse video.
I'm still hoping for some kind of better interpolation effect that I haven't found yet.

  • Why are my clips shaking after slow motion?

I captured clips from my Canon 7d and converted the clip through mpeg stream clip, pro res, 60 frames, full HD. When I imported it into FCP and set the speed to 50% (or any speed, except normal) the top of the clip shakes the entire time, before I made the clip in slow motion there was no shake.
Any ideas why this is happening?

Did you shoot 720p 60? That is the only format that shoots 60fps.
Conform with CINEMA TOOLS. doing a speed change in FCP doesn't do it right.

  • Slow Motion on Multiple Clips

Ok so I'm newish to Premier and starting to get frustrated by how slow it is to edit in this software. Surely there must be an easy way to make a whole sequence of clips run in slow motion at 50% speed. I've copied down the clips to the timeline but it seems I have to time remap on a clip by clip basis and moreover there's no easy way to stretch the new longer clip in the timeline without moving it first to its own track and then inserting it back into the original.
Please tell me there's an easy way to do this!!!!

Hi Craig - totally understand why you are a little confused as to why I'd want to apply a job lot action but as a wedding videographer, I end the film with a slow motion film sequence of their day. Although each clip does need fine tuning to fit both to the music and to the general feel of the clip as well as fine tuning the in and out points, I do generally use a 50% slow mo as a rule of thumb and work from there. If this facility was available I could then do all the work from the timeline to fine tune which would be so much faster.
I had a look at the frame rate interpretation and while this does allow me to make a multiple quick change in the way that using a nested sequence would also allow me to do the job, the same restriction seems to still be there, in the fact that any fine tuning of the clip thereafter would be either difficult, impossible or quality would be compromised.
I've got to say though - I am impressed with these forums, in less than 24 hours I have had three or four suggestions all of which may work in a different scenario which I may be able to use, so thank you very much again.

  • Where is my slow motion?  Treat still clips as photos?

I started a project in iMovie HD about 6 months ago. I now have the time to pick it up again and I have noticed that my ability to change the speed of the clip is gone. I'm not sure what happened or how to get it back, but I will definitely need this in order to proceed. All my plug-ins for transitions are gone too. I'm pretty sure I can easily re-install those, but the slow motion is the most important. Please help!
Secondly, is there any way when creating a still clip from footage to treat that as a photo so I can apply the "Ken Burns effect"? In other words, I'd like to scan the still image in the movie instead of having it stagnant for a certain period of time. Hopefully that makes sense. Any suggestions on this would be very helpful.
    Thank you!

  • HELP - Make video clip go in slow motion?

I can't seem how to make part of my video go in slow motion, I've tried looking for tutorials everywhere and it won't tell me how.
    Please help!!
    I use iMovie '11

Drag the clip that you want to adjust from the Event to a Project.
If it is already in the Project, start here.
There should be a small gear icon on the clip in the project. Click it to open the Clip Inspector.
Go to the Clip tab of the inspector. Here you can select your speed adjustment from 12.5% to 800% (I think).

  • Slow motion clips drastically reduce editing performance

I wondered why one project was slower than a similar sized other project (20 min). I moved the project cursor from the end of the project systemmatically towards the start. As I moved it, response got slower and slower. This was the clue. I started to set 50% clips back to 100% as I went backwards through the project and performace rapidly increased. I had both sound and video tracks in the project. Therefore, the more slow motion clips you use the slower editing will become as you progress towards the start of your project.

Did they import as a single long clip?
I would recommend dragging the long DV clip into MPEG Streamclip (a free app from Squared 5).
You can drag the long clip into MPEG Streamclip and divide the long clip into multiple shorter clips. You might divide it into logical events (all clips shot on the same day) or you could make a new clip every time record/pause button is pressed.
Move the playhead to the in point and press I, move the playhead to the Out point and press O. Then File/Export to DV. Repeat until you have all the clips.
Hint: If you know the date and time the clips were shot, give the files a name in the form clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext where hh is hours in 24 hour time and ext is the current file extension (in your case DV).
Then use FILE/IMPORT/Movies... to import into iMovie as separate events.
That should give you good performance.

  • Keep last frame of a clip until the next clip in the timeline?

Is there an easy method to keep displaying the last frame of a clip until the next clip shows up in the timeline. I do not want black video in between.
    Video demo:
    http://www.bartelsmedia.com/vid/tmp_premiere_question2.swf
I know that one can mess around with the playback speed of a clip but this makes it hard to exactly hit the beginning of the next clip.
    Any ideas?
    Ciao, Gunnar

Yeah, Hunt. Frame hold certainly has room for improvement. It also suffers from the auto-deinterlacing bug wherein the held frame is (often?) deinterlaced whether you've ticked "deinterlace" or not, so it is totally unusable for me.
The workaround of exporting .BMPs is wretched also, as this forces a YUV->RGB conversion (for DV, HDV, etc.) that clamps the color range.
I don't like the rate changing method either, as there is a risk of inaccuracy -- especially if you need to tweak the ins/outs afterwards.
When I know I need to do lots of frame holds (such as with instructional animation, screen captures, etc.) I make sure I build in at least an extra second of no-mo where I plan to hold the frame. Then I copy/paste 1 second clips to fill the time. This sucks also, but it is the only way I have found around the other methods' limitations.
My PPro "frame hold fantasy vision" (based on my hazy recollection of my old NLE ca. 1993) is something like: Right-click, choose "Frame Hold at CTI" -- which would automatically set Marker 0 at the CTI, frame hold at Marker 0, and then allow you to infinitely pull the ends of the clip. The overextended regions should be indicated with grey diagonals on the clip in the timeline, just like when transitions run out of frames or nested sequences get shortened, etc.
