Why does my available hard drive space keep going down?

I am running an iMac with Snow Leopard and Lightroom 3; both the OS and program are installed on a 120GB SSD (I know the setup is a bit dated but bare with me)...
I edit about 4-10GB of RAW files every week, which are stored on a separate 2TB HDD, yet somehow, every week I keep seeing less and less available space on my main SSD drive, now down to only 6GB and I don't have much installed on that drive.
Is there a setting or something I can do to fix this?

The folder that contains your catalog and preview files and other relevant user files is still on your SSD. You can move that entire folder to your external hard drive. After you move it, simply open it in its new location and double-click on the catalog file to start Lightroom.

  • Firefox eventually consumes all available hard drive space while running

I have 1-2 GB available on my hard drive. When I leave Firefox running for a while (a few hours to a few days, not sure what triggers this behavior), my available hard drive space goes down and down until it gets down to 0. If I quit Firefox, the hard drive space frees up.
I always have multiple windows and tabs open. I'd rather not quit Firefox ever, but I have to to get my HD space back. Sometimes it doesn't seem to happen for a long time, and then it starts happening. I've been rebooting about weekly recently and it hasn't helped any.

I would also have assumed it was just variations in VM usage & application or system memory usage - except that it may show, say, 300 MB available AFTER rebooting, and then, without my launching any applications or using the computer, just immediately rebooting a second time, show 2 GB available.... so somehow the space available isn't be allocated properly it seems to me...
I was also afraid that I was running with too little available space - but have been doing so for months now without these problems. I've got a lot of large video files on the drive, no other drive available to transfer them to, no $$ right now for purchases... and didn't want to delete the videos. I need to transfer more to CD/DVD's but have done all the 'easy' ones that are less than 700 MB already, and have to either waste DVD's or take the time to convert them to versions that will allow the DVD to play on TV also - something I haven't tried yet and gather takes a bit of time. So I've been running along with the drive pretty full.
I would really like to know how to find any 'junk files' like temp files, any duplicates, etc that can be safely deleted, but also not sure how to do that on a mac? So there's this issue, and also the first paragraph, e.g., that it seems to me that somehow the space available allocation isn't being properly shown - is there some way I can check that, find out what is using up the space?

  • User account available hard drive space

I have multiple computers in an office of 20+ that are used for rotating student interns. I have a user account set up for each student, 2 on any one machine. The issue is that an individual user only has roughly 8.5 gb available for hard drive space. The computer has an 80 gb hard drive. I do not want to limit the amount of space a user can have.
Is there an eay way to not have a limitation set for each user.
    Thank You in advance

    Duane,
That was my understanding as well, but for some reason there seems to be a limitation on the accounts.
Could there be any other explination?

  • Why is my available hard disk space disappearing?

    Hi,
Occasionally my hard disk space will start disappearing for no apparent (to me) reason.  I'll have 15 gigs of available hard disk space that will disappear, and I'll get messages that I'm running out of disk space, interfering with what I'm doing.
After I restart my computer, it seems to reset, but I would like to stop it altogether (as, obviously, it's not always convenient to restart my computer in the middle of tasks.)
I tried Disk Utility, but it didn't find anything.  Are there any other legit programs I should use to solve this and other general issues?
Or is it something I could fix myself (with only basic computer knowledge)?
    Thanks!
    L

  • What should the minimum available hard drive space be?

i've got a 250gb hard drive on a macbook pro (march 2009) and only 23.93gb left. how low should i let my hard drive gb go for a smooth/reliable running computer?
    thanks for the reply!

I agree with Gregory that keeping 10% of a 1TB drive free isn't necessary, but I certainly wouldn't let a 250GB drive get more than 90% full, and I wouldn't let a 30GB drive get more than 75% full, tops — not that I'll ever have a 30GB drive again.
Among other reasons to keep free space on your hard drive, any time you want to burn a CD or DVD, you need to have room on your hard drive for a disk image the same size as the capacity of the disc you're going to burn. And contrary to what Gregory has concluded from his unscientific experiment, there are many, many applications and operations that will bog down, freeze, quit unexpectedly or kernel-panic the computer if there is insufficient free hard drive space. Yes, having lots of RAM helps, but it isn't a substitute for judicious maintenance of adequate free space on one's hard drive.

  • UML295 consuming all available hard drive space

    Hello,
I have encountered a problem with multiple people on multiple computers. I am presuming these are some kind of cache files for the enhanced interface, but the device will consume all hard drive space available within %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Verizon
I am attempting to do a sitdown with the user, but I suspect it will be all things normal. I am wondering if anyone has seen this or knows anything. We do use Cisco AnyConnect, but so far, I haven't seen anything documented for behavior compared to the UML290 which required us changing the way the device identified itself to the operating system.

  • Why does my external Hard Drive not save album artwork? Help!

I have quite a lot of music saved digitally, so to save space I have been storing it on an external hard drive. Some of the music does not have any artwork attached (and does not download any when I select 'get album artwork').
So, as an example, starting with the music on iTunes, I have manually added some artwork via the 'Get info' option.
I then saved the music to my external hard drive.
However, when I next transfer the same album back onto iTunes, none of the artwork has been saved.
Why is this? And how can it be corrected?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
thanks for the reply, limnos, But let me explain: I have about 80gb-100gb of music.
I can't keep all of this on my computer (on iTunes) as it simply takes up too much space for the rest of my computer to run at a decent speed.
I therefore use my hard drive as a kind of library, where i store my music and occasionally transfer some music onto iTunes to listen to, and then transfer it back whe I'm done. Do you see?
I have done a bit more exploring and I think maybe I only have a problem with artwork 'disappearing' when it is albums that I have requested 'get album artwork'. i.e. the artwork downloads onto an album; then i copy the album onto my hard drive for storage; then when i want to play the album again and copy it back onto itunes, the artwork has been lost.
    Do you know why?

  • Why does my external hard drive not allow me to save documents onto it?

My external hard drive is telling me that I have 'read only' permission! I just had to have my macbook pro whipped and I got everything back on the computer but it would also be nice to save stuff as I go since I've already had problems!
    Thanks for any advice
Especially if you know where I can alter the permissions for such

  • Why does dying internal hard drive stop you booting from external hd

Why do I need an internal hard drive if I am booting from an external drive? Doesnt make sense,
Disk Utility warned me that the internal hard drive is failing. I have managed to change start up disks. I have an external bootable drive and even have an empty partition on it, "just in case" I need to install a brand new OS, but here I am waiting for local disks, and I cant access my back-up OS.
Why doesnt OSX just move past the dying faulty hard drive and get to work on the bootable disk? Basically here I am supposedly doing all the right things to cover for an emergency - I may as well have no backup strategy.
Am I missing a step, or is this how OSX works. Perhaps if you read the steps and outcomes below, you can see if there is more I need to do?
If I press "option" at start up, it only shows the internal drive, not recognising the external bootable drive.
fsck -f produced a looping "missing thread" message that went on for an hour or more so I stopped that.
I tried the dvd and command-c at start up, got through to the installer window and when I selected disk utility it hung, but no spinning ball, just nothing was happening.
The next attempt with th DVD i changed start up disk, this time it saw the external bootable drive and I thought I was in business again.
And here I am full circle, waiting for local disks.
    Any thoughts most welcome.
btw, does the SMART issue a warning of a failing drive because a drive is definitely unsalvagable due to a mechanical fault? or is there a chance my drive is physiclly healthy but shows as Failing because it has unbelievable directory issues that Apple tools cannot solve - but DW could?

The Bombich forums have helped me troubleshoot the integrity of the bootable volumes on my external hard drive which I made using Carbon Copy Cloner. The clones are fine ie after I reset nvram after booting up via command-alt-o-f, the clones are now recognised when I boot up-alt. So it seems that there was nothing wrong with the bootable volumes on the external drive per se.
However, the Powerbook will still not boot up past "Waiting for local disks".
As it stands now, nobody seems to be able to give a reason why I cannot bypass the failed internal hard drive. I found a Knowledge base article from Apple saying Cmd-Alt-shift-delete at start-up should skip you to the next working volume hitched up to your computer, but that didn't work either.
I have a new internal HDD coming, so prior to installing it, the final part of the troubleshoot will be to reboot the PB without an internal HDD. I will see what happens and see what conclusions can be drawn from that. Unless anyone has a clue now from what I have posted?

  • Why does restoring a Hard Drive from Time Machine break all my software registration?

I've just upgraded the hard drive in my MacBook Pro using a Time Machine backup. (In the past I've used Carbon Copy cloner to duplicate the drive before installing it, but this seemed like an easier option.) The restore from TM went fine... but now all my apps are acting as if I've just installed them for the first time. Mail and Dropbox went thru their first time startup screens, and are reimporting all my files/messages. Word and Photoshop are asking for the registration serial numbers. What a hassle!
Does anyone know what Time Machine is doing, and why? Why aren't my apps fully restored? And is there any workaround?

I imagine it is because of the way CCC does makes an exact clone of your drive.
Time Machine restores the drive file-by-file and doesn't necessarily restore support files. Most apps know when they've been moved and ask for serial numbers.
However, I have never restored a complete hard drive with Time Machine, so I don't know exactly what to expect.

  • Why does my external hard drive LACIE shut down on its own

I have an LACIE 500G external hard drive connected to my iMAC via USB which has recently (a couple of weeks) started to shut down by itself. This does not happen when I use it on a PC. What's the problem and how can I solve it?

It is possible that the drive is failing as suggested above but it's also possible that your cable is flakey. Have tou thought to try a new one?

  • Why does my external hard drive disappear?

I've tried USB2, Firewire 800, and network connection (Time Capsule). None of the drives stays connected long enough to get a backup done. The drive just disappears and the backup stops. i tried this with a brand new drive from Western Digital, and also bought a brand new 3TB Time Capsule. They just don't work! With the new WD My Book Studio, made for Mac, it only stays connected for less than 5 minutes, then disappears. The backup stops because the Mac can't find the hard drive.
    I have a 27" intel-based iMac with Mountain Lion.
I'm very frustrated that I can't do a simple backup. I'm thinking of leaving Apple computers over this. i currentlyh have two 27" iMacs, an Air Book, and iPad 3rd gen, and iPhone 4S. So I am a Mac addict.
But if I'm going to have these kinds of problems I may leave Macs forever and use Windows. Seems like Apple and the MAc computers have lost their edge, especially after going to the intel chip sets.
Will anyone out there please give me some tips on how to fix this problem!
    Thanks,
    Gary

    Hi Gary, certainly frustrating.
Only thing I can think of trying is booting from your Restore Partition using CMD+r, then try to install on one of those drives... if it lasts long enough... thinking this may tll us if it's HW or SW issue.
Though if you had a 10.6 Install Disc to boot from I think that'd be a better test.
    Or...
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Why does my external hard drive unmount?

    Hi,
I am having the new problem with my Seagate Free Agent Fire Wire external hard drive. (my other external hard drive is uneffected). The drive is is connected to my 2009 Mac ProQuad Core via FW800 port. It started happening consistnatly about 1 week ago. After the Mac Pro has been asleep, when I wake it I  get the "device disconnected improperly" message. If I unplug and replug the FW connection in back of the drive it is recognized again. I have my iTune music on this drive.
    I have done permissions repair.
This is the message I got before repairing permissions. Anyone have any ideas on what to do about this issue?

Thanks for replying, but the unit is not hot. It has been working without a problem for over a year until this past week. I think there is a different problem. Any idea what the message I posted means?
    Thanks
I think it's not hot because the drive is insulated from your touch by the case, but it's cooking inside (see http://www.anandtech.com/show/3858/the-worlds-first-3tb-hdd-seagate-goflex-desk- 3tb-review/7 ) as I learned when I opened up the case. Adding vent holes let it manage full HD backups at full speed, which it couldn't do before. I wonder if the problem has started now because the drive has just been cooking inside for too long.
