Why does my imac have a question mark in the doc sayin start osx

my imac has a question mark in my doc. on top of that question mark it say "start osx" how can i fix this

Your images are "disconnected"
that means they are not in the same place on your hard disk as they were when you imported them into Elements. There are a couple ways this can happen, mostly folks who use Windows to move images to a new location instead of Elements will run into this issue.
To fix it, you either need to move them back using Windows, or Reconnect them using Elements.
You didn't mention waht version you have, but it's done the same in all versions.
Here is a link to the Help doc on how to Reconnect.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

Question. I have elements 10 My photos have a question mark in the upper left hand corner of the photo. Why? What do i do to get rid of it?

No, you will have to replace the switch or do an out-of-warranty replacement at an Apple Store.

have a question mark in the place of my mail's icon and i cannot get into my email. I found my email folder in the library ,but it is not in applications. How do i get my email back ?

you should look in your applications folder to see if mail is still there. the dock icon is pointing to mail being in your applications folder. it has probably been moved or deleted for some reason from the app folder. do a spotlight search for your mail program. if it is still on your computer, move it back to the applications folder and when you click the question mark, it should see it is back and open. The email folder in your library shouldn't have to be touched. you need mail.app itself.

  • Why does my clip have a higher quality in the viewer than the canvas?

When I am editing, I have noticed that sometimes my images and clips have a drastically higher quality in the viewer than the canvas/timeline, what is causing this, and how do I edit and export my films with the highest quality possible?

    >Why does my clip have a higher quality in the viewer than the canvas?
The answer is very simple; the Viewer shows the media at its native resolution while the Canvas shows the media at the Sequence resolution.  I'd bet that in your case, the original media is of higher resolution that the Sequence in the Timeline.

Hi, Hank. What model is the old Powerbook?
    Hi eww,
According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24604, it is the PowerBook (FireWire) computer (M7572). As I understand it, this is a G3.
If it's a Powerbook G4 (any model), that CD can't
boot it, and in order to perform an installation on
the Powerbook, you would have had to start the PB
from its hard drive, insert the CD into the external
FireWire drive, and then perform the Clean Install
that way. I'm surprised if that was possible; the
installer should have refused to run.
Well, IIRC, this is indeed what I did...
    Even if it did
run successfully, both the installed OS 9.0.4 and the
OS 9.0.4 on the CD itself would be unable to boot the
PB afterward, possibly resulting in exactly the
    symptoms you see now.
...and I think you have nailed it.
    If this is an accurate
description of what you did and how things went, the
solution is to obtain an appropriate OS 9 installer
disc for the Powerbook model in question — that what
disc that is will depend on which PB G4 model you have.
If it's the last of the Powerbook G3's (the first PB
that had a built-in FireWire port), it was originally
shipped with OS 9.0.2, and a retail (not
model-specific) OS 9.0.4 CD should boot it OK. If
your CD is a valid one for that model, you should be
able to boot the Powerbook to the CD now, even if the
installation was unsucessful — unless your
FireWire optical drive isn't bootable itself: some
aren't. Have you ever booted the Powerbook or any
other Mac to a CD in that drive before?
It sounds like you are describing the situation perfectly. The OS 9.0.4 CD is what we have. I did indeed boot to a Norton SystemWorks 2.0 CD yesterday via the FireWire external drive, but I was unable to change the startup disk (so as to be able to restart the PowerBook from the HD).
You mentioned that I probably can't boot to an OS CD via the FireWire drive, and it is true that I have not been able to do this. Before I decide on another (stupid) course of action, I'll wait until you comment.
My next idea is (1) to start up the two Macs -- connected via FireWire -- with the PowerBook in target disk mode, (2) insert the OS 9.0.4 disk into the iMac, and (3) choose to install system software on the PowerBook ("choose volume"). Could this work?
    Thanks again,
    Hank

  • Why does my imac g5 show a folder in the middle of my screen that loads

HElp my imac g5 shows a blue folder in the middle of my screen that flashes to the finder logo then back to a question mark and back and forth PLEASE HELP this computer has all my files on it and everything i need answers this is my life

It means it can't find the hard drive. Get your original gray install disk, insert disk and reboot holding the "C" key until you get the OSX screen. Open Disk Utility and do a Repair Disk on the hard drive. If that works then also do a Repair Permissions. If the Repair Disk doesn't work your hard drive may have failed. My assumption here is you haven't been doing regular backups. If your drive has failed you may have lost all your data.

  • Flashing folder with question mark on the inside at  start up

My macbook only has a flashing folder with a question mark in it and it clicks.

Flashing questions mark indicates Nac can find a valid system to boot from.
Clicking usually indicates a dead or dying hard drive.
    Do you have backup?
Probably is time to take it to Apple Store to have them repair it for you.

  • HT201177 Why does my iMac display keep shutting off. The rest of the computer keeps running and I have to unplug it for a while to get it to come back up.

My 27" iMac's display goes to sleep after a few min, and you can still hear it running in the back ground. I can't hold the button on the back to shut it off. I have to unplug it for a while to get it to restart.

Well, at less than one year old it is under warranty (and hopefully you have Apple care too).
You should take it to your Apple Store and have it examined within the guarantee period.
The problem, may not be that serious, but that is what a warranty is for.   It is also why you should take out the insurance of Apple Care.

  • Why does my imac have finder problems

My iMac runs for a few minutes and thru a few apps (doesnt matter which ones) and the Finder craps out to a beachball.  Cant Relaunch, cant reboot. OS is 10.6.8.

Thanks - turns out I have a HD with a "problem that cannot be repaired" says disc utility.  So, if I cannot copy files off prior to erasing the disc, will an Apple Genius Bar have the ability to pull my files in a way that I do not?
Meaning do I waste my time drving the 40 miles to the Apple store?

  • Why does my iMac have to make such a loud noise when I turn it on?

Is there any way to turn my iMac on in a silent way?
Not that it bothers me but sometimes there are other people in the same room trying to sleep.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions for iMac Intels.
You can install this Preference Pane and control the volume of your startup chime from the System Preferences.
    Arcana Startup Sound Preference Pane
StartupSound.prefPane is the software which controls the volume of the startup sound of your Macintosh computer. StartupSound.prefPane mutes the startup sound without changing the output volume setting. And StartupSound.prefPane limits the startup volume so that it may not become loud even if you make the output volume louder. To set up the startup volume, you select the "Startup Sound" pane added to the "System Preferences."

  • Why does my Finder have two different languages in the Menu?

    Hi
My Finder seems to be showing two different languages? Most of the menu items, like File, Edit, View, Go and Help are all in English (my preferred language under System Pref, International, Language). However, i am not exactly sure when (or what i did), but some of the menu items under Finder (Shutdown, Sleep, Restart etc.) and under Window (all of the menu items) were in a Chinese language.
So i went to the System Pref, Internaltional, Language and unchecked them. So that only the English variants were selected. I restarted....and all it did was change the same menu items that were in Chinese to a Norwegian (????) type language.
I have reinstalled my OS 10.4 and it was still the same. I then ran all the updates....and it was still the same.
I have run the Optional Install on the OS 10.4 disk, and tried the Language Translators reinstalled....and still the same.
Apart from formatting.....does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi BDAqua
I trashed the /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file ......rebooted....and it didn't fix the language issue in Finder.
I then did as you suggested (show package contents) and found the file path System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder
I then did a Get Info....but didn't see any language section tabs.
When i Get Info on the System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app
I can see the language tab.....but it is all shaded out (i.e. i can't make any changes). I tried under the Ownership and Permissions tab to change the "Owner" section from System to My Name. However, this did not give me access to the language tab. I also tried to change the "Group" section to My Name (was on Wheel????). But i had no success in changing the language.
Are there any other angles i could try?
I have done quite an extensive search on the internet.....but haven't found anyone with the exact same issue. This was the closest... http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-34796.html
But i tried everything they suggested (except the format option). I haven't posted on any other forums yet either.
Thanks again BDAqua for all your assistance!
