Why doesn't external disk auto-mount?

I have a fairly new Lacie 500Gb external drive attached to our AEBS. My problem is that to connect to it we continually have to enter the password, despite clicking on Remember Password. Once we type in the password it works fine, until the next time we log in, etc.
I remember having this problem with an earlier version of the Airport software, though some time ago, on an even earlier version, the disk would mount perfectly each time. It's a pain having to continually type in the password every time we want to access the Lacie on any of our Macs in the house.
All our software is completely up-to-date. Any ideas for a fix?
thanks, Rachel

You could try something that I only recently discovered myself...
Go to System Preferences > Accounts.
Under your account, click on Login Items. Then click '+', and direct it to your external drive.
This means everytime you logon, it should automatically mount your external drive.

After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted.
I have tried resetting my Mac's PRAM but the problem still remains.
Even USB memory sticks are unmounted efter a few seconds.
Anybody else with this major problem?

I have the same problem, although mine has not been solved by ESET update, finder settings, PRAM & SMC resets or anything else.
Don't get it, my external hard drive still works on both my housemates computers - one macbook pro (with snow leopard) and one dell, just not on mine with mountain lion.
    Any ideas for me guys?

  • Why doesn't my bootcamp drive mount in 10.9.1 mavericks?

Why doesn't my bootcamp drive mount in 10.9.1 mavericks?

the drive case needs drivers and or firmware. Happens all the time esp. with many makes and vendors due to the bridge it uses, that does the SATA drive <=> to FW/USB/etc to your Mac and whether you use FW800/400 or USB2 or even eSATA (w/ a PCIe SATA controller).
If you are using native SATA and an PCIe SATA controller.... tell us! and the vendor needs to provide drivers that are not included with Lion. Lion just 'broke' support it has had with Snow Leopard.
As for RAID - a RAID created with SL will not always support Lion for booting or mount. Happened with 10.3.9 too. And SL would not install on a RAID created with Leopard. See the pattern emerging?

  • Why doesn't PS have auto-recover?

This is probably the one thing about PS that bugs the crap out of me. If Photoshop crashes while you are working something, it is lost forever. I was working on a digital painting a couple of days ago, and I went to save it, and PS crashed.
Every other program (Word, Powerpoint, Excel etc.) has an auto-save/auto-recover feature. Why doesn't PS have one? It seems silly for it not to.

This has been discussed in several other threads, so do a search. As far as I'm concerned any such request doesn't make sense given how PS currently works and how the file format is structured. There's simply no realistic and safe way to save potentially large files in a few (micro-)seconds before a crash nor would that work as an auto-backup. Too many external factors and constant disk activity would have other negative side-effects... If you get my meaning: It's one thing to save a few kilobytes from a Word document in a few blips, but a totally different one shuffling around gigabytes.

  • [SOLVED]External HD: Auto-mount in read-only and only root can access

So I followed the advice in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 88#p583088 regarding using udev to auto-mount my external 60gb harddrive, and it works.  The only problem is, it is being mounted read-only and I can only view the contents via sudo or as the superuser.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction I need to go to get this changed?  I have already once tried to recursively chown everything on the harddrive, but that didn't seem to work.  The syntax I used from that above article specifies "rw" as one of the options for the mount command, so I am stumped as to why this happened.
    Thanks

  • External  disk not mounting any more

Help me please! I am so tired of not having my external LaCie drive mount anymore. It worked fine under 10.5.8 and even 10.6. But for the past several months at start-up the little blue light just flashed and I can hear the drive "chugging" away. Finally, after 5 or so minutes, the volumes mount. Most of the time I could get it to mount by removing the power plug and re-insterting. But now even this doesn't work. This is my Time Machine disk! What is heavens name is going on????

It sounds like a failing drive. I would call LaCie support, they're very good.
Short of that I can give you a command to mount it as a workaround - if it works.
Launch/Utilities/Terminal and enter this command at the prompt:diskutil listPress return. Note the number of the disk (far left column) you want to unmount.
Then, enter this command:mount /dev/(number of disk) /dev/ (the number of the disk)
    Good luck.

  • Stop external drive auto-mounting with utf8=1 option

The filenames on my external disk aren't showing up right.  I've used and am using a typical GNOME setup, and this only started happening when I stopped upgrading for a long while, then went with a complete re-install.
A little experimenting showed that mounting it without the utf8=1 option fixed those filenames. Given the labyrinth of HAL, DBus, udev and DeviceKit, how do I stop my vfat external drive mounting with utf8=1?
There's more info over at the cross-posted thread in Desktop Environments, but I felt it would be more appropriate to ask here instead.

I've "fixed" the issue by adding this line to /etc/fstab:
    UUID=3BEC-9DA3 /media/WD\040Passport vfat rw,user,uid=1000,gid=100,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=0,noauto,flush 0 0
This stops the utf8=1 option being used when I hotplug my external disk.
However, GNOME now has a phantom "WD Passport" external drive icon. It never seems to point to anything, and whenever it's so much as selected, an error dialog appears saying that nothing is mounted there. Another, actual drive icon can access the disk, but the phantom icon is annoying.
Does anybody have a better way of setting mount options in this setup than using /etc/fstab?
If not, does anybody know how to get rid of the phantom drive icon?

  • Why doesn't my disk space free up after moving files to an external drive?

I have a 750GB internal HD but film a lot of movies. To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive.
I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info.
I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.
    Help!

  • Why is my External Disk Drive immediately Ejected?

I have an external hard drive that I've mounted many times onto my iMac running OSX 10.9.2. Now all of a sudden when I try to mount it I get the error message: "Disk not properly ejected". This even when I just connected it. When I tried again the disk image shows up for a second then I get the error message again.  I connected the drive to my laptop and no problem.
I tried to run disk utilities but the drive doesn't show up.

Do 2-3 SMC and PRAM resets with NO peripherals attached and then attempt to connect the EHD. Your cable may need replacing or there could be other issues.

  • 15" Retina external disk not mount

Just bought my new 15" MBP with Retina display.  My external 1TB Silicon Power USB 2.0 external drive won't mount.  Can not see inside Disk Utility either.  I can otherwise mount it on other MBPs and Windows machines.  Any ideas?

Yeah, that's probably not enough juice to get the ball rolling, so to speak. And no firmware's gonna fix that, the way I see it. It reminds me of an identical problem that occurred in the same Retinas, "right next door". As is known, many professional photographers sought to put the display to good use with their top grade cameras. All of these almost universally use FireWire instead. Much teeth gnashing occurred since the promised Thunderbolt to Firewire dongle took a bit longer to materialize, only to result in dismay since it doesn't fulfill the FW standard; it seems that the thing simply can't do the 1.5A that the interface is supposed to make available to the peripheral.
But well, back to your problem. Besides getting a male/female USB extension cable to be able to use the Y adapter, is there no way to power up the drive(s) with some sort of external power supply? For instance, I've a 750GB/7200RPM 2.5" HDD on an Oyen Digital FW 400/800 & USB2 case. The thing really digs power cause it is very fast. The FW ports (400 on the old and now 800 on the new) can handle it, but were I to need to use USB, I can plug a Radio Shack universal power kit set to 5V to boost things and eliminate the need for the Y, since it does have a power jack.

  • Why are my external drives un-mounting themselves?

Since installing OS Lion, my external G-tech drives have un-mounted themselves at least twice. Anybody got any ideas as to why?
Also, other than powering the external drives down, then re-powering them up again, so iMac can detect them, is there a wat to refresh and detect the drives without power down and up?
    Thanks, Schooner

Doing a SMC reset can sometimes fix mount and dismount issues.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Why doesn't iOS/OSX auto-capitalize "Chinese"?

So I just happened to notice this recently and was curious why this was so.  Apparently iOS/OSx doesn't auto capitalize Chinese as it does every other nationality/ethnicity, anybody know why? Just curious.

    Interesting.
Whilst I would describe myself as ignorant on the matter I have the perception that all Chinese characters appear the same height. (that being the most telling difference in western/roman characters).
My daughter visited China  in 2008  and took pictures of street signs and the like but I would not say I could spot any difference.
Is capitalization just something we in the west (as it were) do in Translation ?

  • External Disk not mounting

I had problems (could no write a file to it) with a Seagate 3 TB ExFAT disk, connected by USB 3 to a Mac mini running Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
Disk Utility Verify told me to Repair and so I did, and it stopped in the middle of the Repair (I let it run overnight, having disabled all power saving ooptions in System Preferences).
After that, the disk does not mount.
    1. Any idea how I can mount the disk?
    2. Any idea what tool I can use to recover the contents of the disk?
    Thanks

Sorry, but I did not capture the output of Disk Utility when I ran it and now the disk looks "dead". Does not mount, does not show up in Disk Utility.
I plug the USB cable in, I can hear the disk whirring sound, but nothing happens afterwards. Only the internal disk shows up. The cable is good because I tried it with another disk.
