Why GNOME considers drives in fstab also as removable media?

Hello,
All my partitions are listed in fstab and get mounted to a specific mountpoint.
When I open "Places" in GNOME, I get a list of all my drives as removable media (123 GB drive, 70 GB drive, 30GB drive) and so on. Can I change this behaviour? I mean, there is no reason why I would want the drives to show up two times, once in the file-tree and another time as removable media.
thanks
Sascha

dunno whay hal does that by default... you can tell hal to ignore the disks though... put this in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-ignore-no-removable.fdi (actually it doesn't have to be called like that, I believe that it has to end in '.fdi' though)

if you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also delete it from time machine on the external hard drive ?

As the others say, no, the backup copy won't be deleted immediately, but it will eventually.

My colleague recently synched his phone and now has a full keyboard on the lock screen.  My lock screen keypad is set up like phone keys (alphanumeric).  He's wondering why his is different, and he also now cannot unlock it.  Anyone have this happen?  He came to me yesterday and I noticed that his iPhone 4 still had old software (version in the 4's), so I advised him that he needed to synch it up to get the iOS 5.1.1 version.  He synched and now can't get back in.  He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine.  Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?

He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.

  • Why start iCloud drive when Yosemite is not ready? Once accidental start iCloud drive, no downgrade option?

When IOS8 is release there is a simple switch to start iCloud Drive.  It is a nightmare.  My iWork field can no longer be sync with my Mac and Mac Air.
There is no downgrade method to resume the usual iCloud support.  Yosemite is not ready now.
There should be a warning for anyone who may not know the link between iCloud drive and Yosemite.
Why start iCloud drive when Yosemite is not ready for download?

Give Apple feedback on this at http://www.apple.com/feedback
Unfortunately the iOS 8 release was made fully functional even though some of the functions are not useable at this time.  That should have been clearer so the user knew not to activate a function that would not work fully.

  • Why do hard drives disappear off network?

I have a PowerMac G5 with a number of external Firewire hard drives. One of them failed today so I had to turn it off. As soon as I did, the FW800 drive chain, including shared 1TB drive used as the home's iTunes library, are no longer visible on the network. They show up on the G5 and there is nothing wrong with them or the connections.
What would cause all three FW800 drives to drop off the network radar, so they can't be seen when I'm logged in from any other computer? It's the weirdest thing and it's got me scratching my head. I'm baffled.
To help you analyze the problem, here is the configuration:
    * Internal Mac FW800 port goes to a 1TB backup drive, which is daisy chained to another 1TB backup drive, as well as the 1TB iTunes drive and a FW400 drive. This daisy chain was necessary because there is only one 800-speed port available on the computer. That entire daisy chain is no longer visible on the network, but it was when the now-defunct drive was connected and running at the end of that chain. That's what has me confused.
    * Internal Mac FW400 port goes to a 160GB portable drive. This one is visible on the network.
    * 1 PCI card FW400 port goes to a 500GB drive which is daisy chained to another 500GB backup drive. Neither of these are visible on the network, but they used to be.
    * 1 PCI card FW400 port goes to a 320GB drive which is daisy chained to another 320GB backup drive. These both continue to be visible on the network.
    * 1 PCI card FW400 port goes to a video camera for digital video input.
So two of the daisy chains dropped off the network as soon as one drive was turned off. What gives with that? I know I can look for a new PCI card with FW800 ports, but that's not the point. My issue is that this configuration worked fine on the network when there was an extra drive attached. How would removing a drive from the chain cause it to disappear from view?

The drive was not "erased". It was simply partitioned. If you want to actually "erase" the drive, you need to select the "write zeros to drive" option. This does not really "erase" the drive either but it overwrites all of the data on the drive with zeros which is as close to being erased as a drive can get. This will take much longer that the simple "erase drive" option which only deletes the drives directory.

Why can't anyone tell me how to remove all those little "!" in the left column all at once or at least sort them so I can mark them and then delete them?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.
If, on the otherhand, you've been cleaning up your media from Explorer rather than iTunes and just want to eliminate the now broken links, use Tunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on startup.

  • ITunes on my phone is no longer playing some songs, even those I have purchased with my phone.  They will play fine on my pc itunes.  I also cannot remove the audio books that are on my phone and add others and the audio books on my phone will not play.

I am unable to play new songs purchased on my phone and some old songs on my ipod/iphone.  They all work fine in iTunes on my computer.  I also cannot remove the audiobooks from my phone when I sync even though I have unchecked said books, and I cannot play them either.

Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data.  Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!

How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?  I have the latest Apple TV, ipads, iPhones as well as a solid HP Windows machine all on my home network.  Is there a way that I can connect my hard drive to my receiver or Apple TV directly so that the digital media is available on my network 24/7 rather than have it connected to my computer and available through Home Share which never works anyway??

        1.  Depressing mouse buttonon start up did not eject the zip disk.
        2.  To examine front of zipdrive, I had to remove many screws and several plastic case
coverings.  Upon doing thatI discovered that, unfortunately, there is no whole in front
of mybuilt-in zip hardware drive for me to insert a paper clip to manually eject zipdisk.
          3.  I went to the Utilities folder in myMac OS X Application folder, but I could not find
               theiomega zip drive in there.
Also, I did go into my "9" System folder and thento the Extensions folder within it and did find an icon of an
Iomega Driver. When double clicking on it a window came upstating I was opening the application

Uponclicking open nothing happened - nothing opened.
I also went into the "System X" folder>Libraryfolder>Extension folder>IomegaSAM.ket icon and double
clicked on it and asmall window opened stating "Compiling file List", however nothingopened it just
continued to compile, so I closed it.
    Within my Mac OS X HD>  Applications>Iomega folder>Iomega Tools.app a smallwindow opened up

  • Windows 7 GPO - Disable All Removable Media then Re-enable, now CD/DVD drive is inaccessible

Ok, this might be better placed in the Windows 7 forum, but we're having some issues with limiting access to removable media via GPO.
We've set up a GPO for Computer Policy, Admin Templates, System, Removable Storage Access, All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access - Enabled
After finding that this was a bit too restrictive we reset it back to Not Configured (and later Disabled to try and force it) but it seems to break our DVD drives on all Win7 x64 machines (the gpo is limited to apply only to these machines).  Instead
of the usual icon in my computer it shows a description of the CD/DVD in the drive and the usual "unknown file type" icon.  if you take the cd out it shows the usual cd rom icon, but still gives "access denied"
There is one workaround, and that is to set the GPO back to not configured and manually remove the CD/DVD device via device manager, restart, and allow windows to re-install the device drivers.
This is 100% repeatable by applying the same local computer policy (All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access - Enabled" and restarting the machine.
Has anyone else run into this problem before?  And how can we fix it without having to go to every machine to remove the DVD drive from device manager?
    Thanks,
    -Nick

    Hi,
after looking on many pages for a solution i always found the same workarounds - but for me deleting the device is no option because you aren't allowed to delete devices without administrative rights. Also I can't expect that our users always have to reinstall
    the device.
So i analyzed whats going on in the registry when the key "Deny_All" for blocking RemovableStorageAccess is set to 1 - with the running of gpupdate i realized that Windows is writing a registry key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\Device\
named "security". The problem is that windows doesn't delete this key after setting the key "Deny_All" back to 0. Only sometimes it will be deleted, for example when you apply the policy for blocking devices and reverse this setting immediatly without a restart
    of windows.
I made a little script which I integrated in the user-gpo (as logon script) for granting access to the removable storage devices:
    '****SCRIPT START****
' this script searches for all "security"-keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\ and deletes them
    Option Explicit
    Const HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE = &H80000002
    Dim oReg : Set oReg = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\.\root\default:StdRegProv")
    Dim oShell : Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Dim sPath, aSub, sKey, aSubToo, sKeyToo, dwValue
' Get all keys within sPath
    sPath = "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE"
    oReg.EnumKey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, sPath, aSub
    ' Loop through each key
    For Each sKey In aSub
'Get all subkeys within the key 'sKey'
        oReg.EnumKey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, sPath & "\" & sKey, aSubToo
        For Each sKeyToo In aSubToo
            oReg.deleteValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, sPath & "\" & sKey & "\" & sKeyToo , "Security"
            if Err.Number<>0 then
                Err.Clear
            end if
        Next
    Next
    '****SCRIPT END****
The policy for giving access to removable storage looks like this now:
    - a logon script is executed which searches for all "security"-keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\ and deletes them
    - the setting "All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access" ist set to "Disabled"
    I hope this helps...
    Regards
    Swanson

Hi, I have registered at apple site, and i have submitted the credit card information, they deducted some ammount without my permission, why they did that? how can i remove my credit card details from that site or deactivate my account?

    From that HT3702 page :
If you update your billing information, the iTunes Store or Mac App Store will place an authorization hold on your payment card account, usually in the amount of 1 USD or the local currency equivalent, to verify your account information.
You might see authorization requests on your online statement. These requests aren't actual charges; they are tests to confirm that your payment card account is active and has available funds to accommodate transactions. Authorization holds are removed by your financial institution shortly after your purchase clears. The time it takes to remove authorization requests varies by financial institution.
The number of days that it takes to diappear varies by bank, but it's usually a few days - though with the weekend coming up it might take an extra day or two

The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.
