You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to 10.5.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was based on Power PC code and was written to be able to run on both Power PC and Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled. -

Not sure what exactly you did (or not), but it looks as if you should attempt doing it all again, only this time all right and by the book. Many millions have done so, and sure it'll work for you as well.

2. May be just a one-off instance. Only if you are unlucky, it may happen again. Never happened on my Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020 with so many updates. Anyway, you may try the Lumia Software Recovery Tool in such a case.

How have you tried to update the iPad to iOS 6.1.3 ? The page that you posted from, automatic downloads, isn't for iOS updates, only for content from the store.
If you have iOS 5+ on your iPad then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option for direct update on the iPad, otherwise you can only update to the current version via your computer's iTunes.
To update via your computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off it to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button -

Are you trying to upgrade iTunes to 10.7 or 11.0 in order to sync a new iPhone? And you've found that your OS X 10.5 won't support the new iTunes? If yes, you need to buy OS X 10.6, it's not available via Software Update.
OS X 10.6 is available from the online Apple store, in the US by calling 800-MY-APPLE, or online here. After OS X 10.6 installation, run Software Update until there are no more updates available, at which point you'll be at OS X 10.6.8. At that point you can install the current iTunes. -
My laptop died on me and I have just got a new one. I installed itunes and updated my phone software, but now all the Apps are missing and i cant see them in my account as purchased to re-download.
There is no purchase history when i view my account information, can anyone explain what has happened?If you have more than one account, you have to log in to the one that was used to purchase those apps.

to update my ipad would take 5 hours to download the file and the server times out before then.
when i restart, the process starts all over again- not where it left off so will fail again!Only Apple knows why they do what they do. You could send them feedback and at least let them know of your issue.

Beyond that if you have a laptop perhaps you have a friend's better wifi you can use? Or maybe if you have an apple store nearby make an appointment and take it there to be updated. -

What you are looking for is only available for iOS 5 and above. You will need to connect your iPhone to a computer and update through iTunes as always.
