Why is finder preview so slow?

When I was using the previous OS the finder preview was ultra fast. Now when I try to go thru music and audio files the preview is irritating slow. Sometimes it takes 30-60 sec to launch normal mp3 songs or WAV files. Anybody knows the reason why its degraded from the previous OS?

I have the same problem, can someone please help?

  • HT1338 Why is Finder running very slow?

Finder is extremely slow.  Actually opening any folder is very slow.  I'm always watching a pin wheel

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
A common cause of a slow user interface is a large set of image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons. If you have more than a dozen or so such files, move them to another folder.
Another possible cause is iCloud activity, especially Photo Stream synchronization. If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane and see whether there's an improvement.
Otherwise take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent messages in the log. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Why do RAM previews get slower towards end of comp?

I was just wondering, why do RAM previews and even updates in the comp. monitor when playing with effects get slower as you get deeper into the comp.? When i first begin a comp everything is extremely fast but  when 2 to 3 minutes of the comp is completed everything slows down and each frame takes like 4 or 5 seconds to load. Do you think it's a matter of RAM?

No. Whatever issues you have are specific to your setup like calculations on effects accumulating or multiplying. This can easily happen with particle effects or temporal effects like Timewarp - the later the time in the comp, the more particles or frames have to be processed. You have not provided any relevant info, anyway, so there is not much point to making generic claims based on such vague and incomplete info. We know nothing about your system or even what version of AE you use, so aprdon me, this is pointless.

  • Why is finder so slow? iTunes also?

Ok starting to reconsider my choice of buying this MacBook Pro... oh yeah WITH RETINA. I am running Mavericks 10.9.5 still. Didn't see the point of upgrading to Yosemite.
Everytime I try to listen to songs in finder it's slow, in iTunes it's also slow. Switching between songs is so **** laggy. I mean I'm not doing anything complex, just trying to listen to music smoothly. Finder just seems like complete crap, even when it comes to loading files, changing names, etc. This is a brand new MacBook Pro w/ Retina. For the $$$ I expected it to be atleast smooth. Not so **** irritating. I mean that's what I thought Apple was known for, its refinement? My Sony Vaio was **** smoother and didn't make me want to smash it. The lag is making everything I want to do take considerably longer, wasting my time.
    Anyone know what's up?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

    Hi there
I bought Mac pro OSX 10.9 yesterday. Now its trackingpad does not work does not double click.
Also I could not open finder' preview' downloads' about this mac' and so on.
The arrow shows a crounding olorful circle  as said you have to wait. But nothing happens.
    Really disappointed
    Many thanks

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble.  The good news is you can return it within 14 days of purchase for any reason.  Return it and have them give you another.

  • Some JPGs stretched in finder preview

    Hello,
I have a CD of pix from a photographer, all JPGs, that were perfectly normal and usable on my old MacPro.
But when I loaded them on my MacBookPro, some of the images, when viewed in the Finder preview window, are now smashed thin horizontally and stretched out vertically. I don't care about that so much, but an ancillary problem is that when I try to open them in PhotoShop CS4, they crash the application. I nuked them and reloaded them fresh, but the same thing happened.
Any idea why these photos would behave so strangely in a different OS?
    thanks much,
    Sean

In my case, images from my Digital camera show the preview icon or a generic tiff/jpg icon. I can set my view preferences to show icon preview as mentioned above (but this is typcally slower to display when opening the folder.) Opening the image in Photoshop then saving the file saves an invisible file that has a thumbnail image (for example filename is photo.jpg and an invisible file is created called .photo.jpg) when saved.
    Regards,

  • Why is Bridge CC so slow?

I'm trying to figure out a way to diagnose why Bridge CC is so slow. I regularly use programs like Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere and don't notice any kind of inapropriate lag or delays at all. However, when working in Bridge it just feels slow. Opening menus occasionally just hangs for seconds on end before dropping down. Thumnails from a gallery I've previously viewed can take upwards of 10 seconds to appear after opening the software. But the most noticeable and repeatable issue comes when trying to select more then one image files. CTR-Clicking a second (or however many additional files) can take anywhere from 5-8 seconds to happen. This, more then anything else, is making bridge unusable.
    What should I do?

I just bought a new computer with with Windows 8.1 and plenty of all the hardware that make Adobe CC work great. Unfortunately Bridge had the sluggish slow response that seems to be haunting many people. I read through the adobe support and forums and found a number of good places to look but nothing that outlined a working solution for me. I tried all this http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/troubleshoot-errors-freezes-bridge-windows.html and nothing worked. I was facinated to find people were able to create new account and found the unresponsiveness went away. I also payed close attention to the fact that network drives might cause problems. Not being familiar enough with Windows 8.1 I looked for traditional XP network drives and found that wasn't the problem. But yesterday I realized I have "Libraries" that point to my windows 8.1 laptop and one that pointed to SkyDrive. The settings transfered to my new PC when I used the same login information from my laptop. So I went in to the libraries and removed all the links that went to my laptop and skydrive and Bridge worked perfectly as would be expected on a new PC. So check your libraries. This might also explain why some people found that a new account solved the problem.
    Open the "desktop"
    Open "file explorer"
    Go to the "view" tab
Click on "navigation pane" in the ribbon
    Select "show libraries"
Expand "Libraries" in the folder view
Check the path to every folder in the list
Right-click and choose "remove location from library" if anything points to another computer or SkyDrive
Obviously I can't say it's everyone's problem, but it worked for me. I hope it helps someone. Good luck everyone.

  • Finder is very slow, particularly when using network drive

I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air, OSX 10.9.4, and Finder is extremely slow, particularly when I am navigating my Time Capsule.  First, a little history.
I have tried the fixes listed in these three threads:
    (1) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3358265?searchText=finder%20slow
    (2) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1324280?searchText=Finder%20is%20slow
    (3) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495797?start=30&tstart=0
Second, my Time Capsule is new.  I bought it to replace a WD MyBook that used to work really well, and then something changed.  Unfortunately, I assumed that it was some problem on WD's side, so after a year or two of waiting to see if either WD or Apple issued an update to fix it, I assumed it was some kind of file system incompatibility (or other interoperability problem) that wasn't likely to go away, and just sprung for the Time Capsule.  However, after getting all the files on the Time Capsule, the problem remains.  So here's a rundown of what I experience:
When I navigate the directories on my Time Capsule, if I haven't been in a particular folder, it takes a very long time to load the contents.  On average, it will be 30 seconds, but it is not uncommon for it to be over a minute.  This can happen even if a folder is empty or has just a few files in it.  In addition, adding a subfolder and trying to rename it takes a very long time.  After renaming a new folder, it can then take another full minute or more for the folder to actually show the newly assigned name and bounce into line in alphabetical order.
Here are some other observations.  First, my connection is very fast, as I'm directly connected to the Time Capsule (albeit via wireless).  Second, there is clearly something extra going on in Finder that is contributing to this issue, because I navigated to different directories using Terminal and did an "ls" command, and as you would expect, the list fired out virtually instantaneously.  Yet, right after that, if I clicked on that same folder with Finder, it would take a minute or more to display the same file names.
Could it be that the Finder is doing other things at the same time as it is giving me a list of what is in the directory?  For example, could the Finder be loading ALL metadata for each of the files into some database or index being built on the fly every time I pop into a new folder, even if I'm not using a view mode where I am asking to see those other bits of metadata?  If so, that might make sense as I generally am using the network drive to navigate directories of my photographs, and they have a lot more categories of metadata associated with them than do Word docs and PDFs (e.g., date of picture, time of picture, aperture, shutter speed, exposure, etc.).  Or, perhaps is Finder trying to load previews of ALL of the files whenever a directory request is made, so that bouncing through the previews takes less time?  I sort of doubt that, because even after a directory listing finally comes up, it seems to churn a bit on each photo before the preview comes up, which I take as an indication that it's creating each preview only after a request is made for that particular file.  Either way, I will say that in old WinXP and even in the newer Windows 7, if you want to view files in a Detailed setting where you can see other metadata (called "Attributes"), it definitely prioritizes giving you a directory listing, and then continues filling in the various selected Attributes one-by-one after that.  Thus, if you want to sort by the date a photograph was taken (as opposed to its modified or created date, which seem to be default attributes that load as quickly (or nearly as quickly) as the filename), or by the photo's dimensions, it might take a few minutes to load in those attributes for a folder of a couple thousand pictures.  But, critically, if you are not planning on using those attributes, but rather, merely want to see how many files you have in that folder, or select them all and load them into a photo viewer, you won't have to wait for the file system to load the file attributes before you get a listing of the folder's contents.  It seems to me like the Finder, however, might actually be forcing you to wait until it has loaded all of those attributes.
Does the foregoing sound like a plausible explanation of the problem to those out there with knowledge of how Finder actually works?  And if so, does that bring to mind any potential settings that could be turned off or any other work-arounds (since those I've tried have not fixed the issue)?
If anyone has other ideas, I am all ears.  I am pretty annoyed that I sunk time into switching over to a Time Capsule on the assumption that Apple couldn't have had a bug this bad, only to find out that I was wrong.  The biggest irony is that my old WinXP computer used to rip through the folder structures with ease on the MyBook, but my fully updated Air is practically crippled by the same task.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Why is the library so slow to upload to iCloud?

    Hi there,
After a bit of hassle getting Photos to accept all my pictures from iPhoto I thought it was all fixed and ready to go to cloud storage so that I can have the same library on iMac, Macbook Pro and my iPhone.
My photo library isn't that big, about 40Gb (4607 items) but it seems to be taking forever to upload to iCloud.
My broadband speed isn't great (Around 6.5 MBPS download and around 0.7MBPS upload) but after several days my Photo library states that it is uploading 4570 items. When i try to run photos from my macbook there are only a few photos on there.
At this rate I'll probably die of old age before all the photos are in the cloud and bounced back onto my macbook & phone.
Other than slow broadband speed and apple being busy with people like me uploading, are there any other reasons why this is taking so much time? Bad settings anywhere?
As another example my iMac has been on for a couple of hours today and the Activity monitor states that 887.2MB has been sent to the cloud. That's pretty damm slow isn't it?
    Thanks

    Stu Ducklow
Why is my finder so slow to update. For example, if I
download a file (using Safari), I can't find it on
the desktop. If I use Find at the Finder level, it
says it's there, but I can't see it.
Same thing happens with Mail, trying to attach a PDF
I just made. Mail can't see it.
I love all the wondrous glitz of OSX, but wouldn't it
be nice if it could do the basic stuff as well as
System 6? At the rate Apple's going, we'll probably
get a breathless announcement about a spanking-new OS
called Snail, which doesn't do anything but look
    pretty.
    Stu,
Did you ever get an answer to this? My finder is pathetically slow to update, a minor irritation a dozen times a day. System 9 never had this problem. Is there a way to get my expensive computer to do this simple task? Is there any news on this?
    thanks,

  • Document content do not appear in finder preview, quick look or cover flow

The contents of all types of appleworks documents do not appear in finder preview, quick look or cover flow on both of my computers. The generic AWKS logo appears.
Why does this happen and what can be done to correct this?
I have repaired permissions a number of times and have restarted the computer.

AppleWorks 6 was written before OS X & long before Leopard & Quick Look. There hasn't even been an update since January 2004. The ability to create the image for Quick Look likely will never happen.

  • Documents do not render in finder preview, quick look or cover flow

The contents of all types of appleworks documents do not appear in finder preview, quick look or cover flow on both of my computers. The generic AWKS logo appears.
Why does this happen and what can be done to correct this?
I have repaired permissions a number of times and have restarted the computer.

I'm not sure Appleworks files are supported in any form of preview. Appleworks was killed long before any of the preview functions were developed, so I don't suppose its file types were included.
Quicklook has a plugin architecture, so perhaps some programmer that likes Appleworks will create a plugin for it.

  • Finder has recently slowed dramatically

Greetings all, I'm a somewhat new Mac user (since September of last year). In the last few days I have noticed a pretty big slowdown in my computer's performance. When I started looking for guidance I found out about EtreCheck, so I've installed that to capture the information attached below. I honestly don't see what could be the cause, but as I said I am new-ish to Macs.
My main use is for Photoshop, and the only plugin I have installed for PS is Perfect Studio 9 (just a few days ago, since the slowness).
The question I have is could it be that the HDD is too full? I've recently moved a lot of digital photos onto the drive because my external drive is NTFS formatted, so I can only read files from it, and I want to be able to edit some of these photos. I do intend to get a new external drive for the Mac... I just don't have one yet.
Thanks in advance for any insights/guidance.
    RP

        24 GB RAM Upgradeable
        OS X 10.9.5 (13F34) - Time since boot: 8:57:52
        26.40 GB    Page-ins
        11 MB    Page-outs
You have 24GB of RAM (a nice amount), but for a system that has been up 9 hours, you have 26GB of page-ins.  Luckily only 11MB of page-outs (trivial).
Understanding page-in stats is mostly "Voodoo", in that there are perfectly good reasons to have page-in, but generally page-in values are alot lower than 26GB in only 9 hours.  For example, my Macbook Pro has been up for 19 days, and only has 9+GB of page-in activity.
One cause of page-in activity is utilities that purge RAM to get free pages, forcing read-only code of running programs out of RAM, such that when the program needs that code again, it has to page-in the code.  Since the code is read-only, the operating system does not need to page-out the code, it just throws away the code, and will page-in from the executable program file when it needs it again.  An aggressive utility that attempts to keep lots of free RAM will force a program to keep paging-in its code over and over again.
You might get the same behavior if Photoshop usage is processing some huge images such that the images being edited are consuming far more than your 24GB.  This is always possible, since you went to the trouble to buy 24GB of RAM and image processing can be very RAM intensive.  If you are trying to run other programs while Photoshop is processing the huge images, this might be what is forcing the operating system to throw read-only code out of RAM and then paging-it the code again, and again, etc...
Finally, I do not know how Photoshop read images into RAM nor how Photoshop manages it scratch files.  It could be using memory mapped files, which would then be read into RAM by paging-in the file contents.  HOWEVER, any modifications to a memory mapped file would result in page-out activity, and since you ONLY have 11MB, I find it hard to believe Photoshop is using memory mapped files, unless you "Look but Don't Touch" when using Photoshop.
Like I sais page-in activity analysis is "Voodoo" and not easy to quantify.
if you know you are running a utility to create free RAM, than that is most likely the cause.  If you are running other programs while Photoshopping huge images, that might be the cause.
Now matter what the cause, 26GB of disk reading in 9 hours is an average of 50MB a minute non-stop.  That is going to slow down any actions that involve accessing the disk.

yeah cheers, i phoned everyday for a week asking for an ip profile reset, i have an adsl faceplate fitted so no need for master socket stuff, i have disconnected the hub phone, physically and removed it from the router, up stream is always 448 down stream is up and down like an up and down thing, normally hovers around 1000ish but crashes to 160kbps in the mornings or just doesnt sync at all when the phone is in use. after the last fix by bt, downstream sync was a dizzy 2mbps. best i can expect here though is 750kbps or there abouts. ive been trying to get bt to do something lasting for me since last october. so far 2 things worked for me, a fixed rate of 500kbps.. but bt removed it, dunno why. then some change they made that meant my ip profile went down as normal but recovered in an hour or two. thats the fix that gave me the 2mb downstream sync rate. now its back to snafu and proper stuck at 135kbps, the phone is noisy as hell with the bb plugged in but fine without it. if i were a bt techy person, i would soak test the line for a few days, identify that there is a pretty bad problem, then fault find down the line till i found the dodgy stretch of wiring, then replace it, all of it if thats what it took. but im not a bt techy so i just have to put up with this, the forum is my venting place, it doesnt achieve anything but it helps me control the rage that my bt customer experience brings me.

  • Why is my E71 so slow???

Not only has it taken me ABSOLUTELY AGES to register on this forum because the Nokia Support website is so appalling (the register button hasn’t been working for most of the last hour… a clever move by Nokia as it’s the best way to reduce complaints), but my E71 is the worst phone I’ve ever used.  I am close to getting a sledge-hammer and really letting the handset know what I think of it. Why is my phone SOOOOO SLOW?  It’s absolutely appalling.  I was given an E71 for work purposes several months ago and avoided using it until recently as my personal phone (an iPhone) is simply superb.  However, I am now doing a lot of foreign travel with work and therefore need to utilise my company’s mobile tariff which means me using the Nokia device. The problem is the E71 is UNUSABLE as from time to time (and there’s no telling when it will decide to work like this), it decides to go into go-slow mode when it take between 30 seconds and 5 minutes for the device to respond to a single key press.  What do I do about that?  There are so many little graphics on the screen and endless menu options that I have no idea what the problem is and how I adjust the settings to improve its performance.  And as I said, it tends to be a little random as to when it goes slow, although it’s normally 90% of the time I use it. Before I have a nervous breakdown please can someone help me figure out how to use it?  Thanks in advance.

I did a hard format *#7370# on my E90 - was hoping to get to the source of my constant auto shutdowns. And, of course, after a while, 28-33MB on the C: drive is a bit low. It's now on 122MB (out of 133MB). Works much better.
When you install apps, always choose the memory card E: - where you have a choice.
Also, install docs, images and music files to the memory card.
On the Ovi Store/(Account) Settings, select Memory Card for installation.
Do the same for contacts and messages.
I see you where complaining about login in here. I had the same problem, couldn't login yesterday - login no longer valid. It's working now. Keep in mind that if you joined Nokia Discussions - or any other user-based forum just to complain - not attempt to find a solution - you have already failed.
In concluding, I narrowed done the possible causes of my auto shutdowns to my battery, and SIM card. While typing this, my phone went off twice, so I removed the SIM, typed this on a note, offline mode. Also noted that the same subscriber identity module (32k, about 6 years old) caused the first shutdown of my N70 that I can remember, this morning.
So check your SIM. The network is the problem.
Symbian connected me to the world, to my dreams.. Thank-you Nokia

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slow? Beach ball

Boy, I was looking at a discussion of this from TODAY, about a half hour ago, and now can't find it.
"Why is my MacBook Pro slow?" brings "screen tearing issue" and other things not related to my problem.
I got and ran Easyfind, and got rid of MacKeeper.
What else do I need to do?
I have the beach ball way too often.
I just made an iMovie, but optimizing it for YouTube is impossible.  Boxes keep getting grayed out; complete hangup.
    Can easyfind help further?
    Thank you.

    Hi Tomo 2,
Kim Komando said get Sophos, so I did.  I see it found something called Bredo-K on Nov. 22.
It's now scanning my OVER 5 MILLION FILES.  Seriously, I don't think I need that many.
Right now about 50% of CPU idle,
    about 1.03 GB Ram free.
Sophos is using about 90% of whatever.
This scanning could take all weekend.  I need to get rid of some stuff.  Hard to know what, though.
    Thanks for any more ideas.
    Jerry
