Why is KB3021917 a "recommended update"? Important for whom?

Hi,
today, various of my Win7 machines presented me KB3021917
as a "recommended update", that, according to my Windows Update console in Windows 7 "fixes problems in Windows", which is not true if you look at the KB page on the web, which says:
"This update performs diagnostics in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in order to determine whether performance issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. Telemetry is sent back to Microsoft for those computers that
participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). This update will help Microsoft and its partners deliver better system performance for customers who are seeking to install the latest Windows operating system."
So obviously, the only one for whom this update is important, is Microsoft, but not the user, and it does not fix any problems, especially for users who do not participate in the "Customer experience" program, this update should be absolutely useless
and do nothing.
So why does Microsoft think it is so important that it needs to be installed?

The reason why I am so alarmed about updates like this is that they have the sour after-taste of a company trying to trick the user into sending some (probably personal or private) data by making them install an update that the ordinary user will not be
able to tell apart from security fixes or other important updates (important from a user's point of view).
The update is selected by default, listed under "Important" (as opposed to "Optional"), even if I uncheck it in my Windows Update console, it gets installed, I have to actively right-click it and actively select "hide update"
to permanently disable it:
From a single user's point of view, this update is not important at all, it's not even worth restarting the computer afterwards, it adds abolutely no value to your Windows installation, but may be another source of error (should I really mention the desaster
of the previous patchdays?). And as a paying customer, I only want to get this kind of update that is obviously only important to Microsoft, but not me, if I have actively opted-in to receive this kind of updates.
Let me explain it a different way. If Microsoft is planning on updating the CEIP backend to capture data differently, lets say a new XML/SOAP version or XML/SOAP format. This functionality would be broken if you don't update this component. I am sure
Microsoft has good purpose for deploying this patch out to your system that deeper than what they put in your knowledge base article. Even if you are not using the component, you still may need the patch it so it doesn't break other things down the line.
The patch is still optional, they are not forcing you to install it, you can hide the patch and not worry about it.
Perhaps you can actually read what this program is, so you can put your mind at rest:
http://www.microsoft.com/products/ceip/EN-US/default.mspx
You may also want to make sure that CEIP really is disabled on your system:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730757.aspx
There would be some pretty good humor behind your post, if it was still enabled on your system and you didn't know any different.

  • Mac OSX SUS - Why aren't the latest updates offered for some software

For instance, on my sus, Quicktime 7.6.4 is the latest version offered for leopard. 7.6.6 is available on Apple's site. Is there actually a 7.6.6 update others can see on their sus, or is this a universal issue - and why aren't the latest updates available?
    Thanks

I just checked my 10.6.3 SUS server at it appears to have that Quicktime 7.6.6 update listed. The size is listed as 68.5 MB and the post date is 03/30/10. My SUS Server Admin interface shows a "Last Check" time of Apr 13, 2010 3:00:00 AM.
I have wiped and reinstalled my SUS server several times dealing with the "missing 10.6.3" updates bug reported many times in these forums so that may be why my server is displaying the Quicktime 7.6.6 update.

  • Why I cannot purchase or update apps for my new iPad all of a sudden? I have internet access.

When I tried to update apps they are stuck with "waiting..." and I cannot access those apps anymore. I have Internet access all this time.
What is going wrong, will I lose data for the apps.
Thanks for any help or insights.

Restart the iPad (hold the Home and Sleep buttons until the Apple logo appears.
This sometimes happens if the download of the updates gets interrupted.
If that doesn't work, downalod the updates via iTunes, and sync the iPad to iTunes.
In either case, you don't lose the app data

  • Why is Adobe not working after I've downloaded the recommended updated version??

Why is Adobe not working (I don't get even a picture!!, let alone audio) after downloading the recommended "updated version?"

When I try to read the news clips...like OMG, or any of the "gossip" that involves a short video clip, a screen pops up saying that there's a new version of Adobe, which I should update to.  So I updated it...by the usual clicking where it says to click and I can see the new version being added.  But, after it's finished updating, I don't get even a picture...or sound...of the usual OMB lady speaking, nor do I get the video clips of any of the "gosspi" items or trailers, or anything else.
There's just a big, blank space where the video would normally be showing.
I could see the updates taking place on a separate screen that pops up, too.  It took a minute or so to finish.  I've done it at least 5 times, but I still get just a blank space in place of the picture and sound that used to pop up!  (The video clip of the father who jumped out of a moving car to pick up his daughter, who fell out of the car onto the road, for instance, does not appear...just a blank space!)
I hope this clarifies my problem.
    What's "OS?"

  • Scripting Automatic Updates to get the Recommended updates, not Important or Optional

Where I work the policy is to download Recommended updates, and I'm getting very tangled up working out how to select them with a script. Can anyone help me please?
If my query includes AutoSelectOnWebSites=1 then I get the Important updates. Without that I get the Optional ones. I'm getting the impression that the Recommended ones are chosen by the Windows o/s, not by the web site, but I'm not sure and can't find

Thanks for this jrv and I do like your signature by the way. I've had a long look at the most popular script in the gallery for Windows Update, this one:
http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/2d191bcd-3308-4edd-9de2-88dff796b0bc. Also loads of others on the internet.
Some download everything, and the ones which don't select updates using a criteria with the search as per
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa386526(v=vs.85).aspx, and/or filter the search results using the IUpdate properties
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa386907(v=vs.85).aspx.
I don't think there's an IUpdate property or search criteria which correstponds to Recommended updates, I can't see one anyway and I've spent ages looking. I'm wondering if Windows chooses, not the web site, based on its knowledge of what's installed.
The AutoSelectOnWebSites property isn't what I need. It selects updates which the Windows Update gui calls Important when "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive Important updates" is
unticked. The requirement where I work is to install the Recommended updates. I've tested it several times and I've confirmed that on plenty of the Recommended updates
AutoSelectOnWebSites is set to false (on all of the updates in the example below)
    Here's an example:
With "Give me recommended updates..." unticked I get:
With "Give me recommended updates..." ticked I get:
I think I need to know how Recommended updates are selected, and I can't think of any more digging I can do. Jrv, if you or anyone else knows I would be grateful!

I have time machine saving onto two usb drives.
The total size of the files being backed up is 4.6TB.
Each external USB drive is 6TB.   So I have 12 TB of space for Time Machine.
Why is time machine only updating one USB drive?  (One drive has been the same for two weeks.)
I have selected both drives in the Time Machine settings panel.
My understanding was that it would do a full backup, and then incremental backups of changed files, getting rid of old copies as needed, and alternate between the two drives.
But it looks like drive A has one complete backup, dated two weeks ago, and drive B is the only one getting action.
There is a red icon on drive one that says the drive needs 120GB more space to do a backup -- which is strange since the whole backup set is only 4.6TB in size, and the drive is 6TB in size...

I have a hard time understanding why I can't contact support about THEIR problem. I plugged my iPhone into my pc. iTunes came up. It said there was an update available for the phone. I accepted that. Clicked on the "download only" because I didn't have the time to install it at that point. It downloaded but didn't stop. It continued to the 'backing up your iPhone' segment then froze. I waited at least an hour with no change. Finally I unplugged my phone..iTunes wasn't responding.I rebooted my pc then tried the same thing again. Same outcome even though I let it "Back Up" for 7-8 hrs while I slept. Same Story...............         iTunes 10.4.0.80 is the software I'm using. When my phone is 'plugged' in what I see on it's face is "Sync in Progress".....for hours!

    Error 1611

  • HT3874 I have just installed the recommended updates which has resulted in Suitcase no longer being able to open. I am running 10.6.8. I am on a deadline so would be grateful for some help!

I would be grateful if I could get some help regarding Suitcase. I just installed three updates that were recommended (one was for iTunes, another a security update and to be honest, can't even remember what the third one was for). Anyway, after two restarts I can no longer run Suitcase which is a bit of a disaster as I working to deadline and I need Word and Quark XPress.
What can I do? Suggestions most welcome with urgency!
    Many thanks,

    Hi there
Thank you for your response – I am running 10.6.8 (apologies for any confusion if I didn't make it clear in my earlier post).
I have just returned from a meeting so was pleasantly surprised to see so many responses. And I normally *do* know better and in my old job I would have never updated whilst on a deadline. Somehow working from home (only my second week) has made me forget all the rules!
I am a bit scared of removing anything or reinstalling at the mo. But I will look into it. I feel quite out of touch with how Macs operate now (I was clearer about OS9). But thank you and fingers crossed that it works!

  • Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

it's also likely that you used two different apple IDs to purchase apps. if that's the case then you simply have to log out of your app store, and log into the other account to update the apps.
from experience it's not possible to syncronise purchased content from two different accounts. but you can always give Apple a call.

  • Plug-in site says Shockway Flash vulnerable, needs updating. I did but says I already have new version. Still shows as vulnerable. Currently have version 11.0.1.152 . Update is for 10.3.183.11. Why is it still showing up being vulnerable?

Up above pretty much sums it up for me. Mozzilla Plug-in Site shows that Shockwave Flash is vulnerable and needs updating, when I click on it, it takes me to Adobe Flash Player and the version it wants me to update to is 10.3.183.11. But when I did that it stopped halfway through and told me that I do have an updated version installed and wouldn't complete. But when I went back to the plug-in page, it still shows Shockwave as being vulnerable and needing updated. Does anyone know why this is? I even double checked and went under Troubleshooting and it shows what I have installed and went to the plug-in section and it shows Shockwave as having version 11.0.1.152. But the version that it's telling me to update too is 10.3.183.11, so that would explain why when I tried to update it said I had the current version. But still shows me as being vulnerable. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks again but when I went there I don't see the correct version to click on. Everything there just explains what it is and now I see something called IE after it some say 32-bit and 64-bit. I have know idea what those are.
I just usually go to my Mozilla plug-in site and update and never worry about what version it is because the system knows. You can tell I'm not a 'techy' person.
But apparently it's Adobe that's dropped the ball. I went back to their site and went to the new version and when you go directly there to download it pops up with the old version that's been telling me to update too which is 10.3.183.11. I tried going directly to support there but it ends up referring me to this type of support. Apparently if you want to call support up you have to pay to get actual tech support from them. In this case you shouldn't because they have it defaulting to the wrong update. I went to other sites as well but am afraid of downloading the wrong version. Actually, the site you sent me too showed someone else that did the same thing from there and it downloaded the wrong version too. So am hesitant to do it from there.
Guess I'll just hope that since I do have version 11.0.1.152 that it will work fine until they fix the update page.

  • Why do I depend on a carrier for 10.2.1 update if I bought the phone from an electronics shop, unlocked

I am mad on Blackberry for this, because I don't undestand why !
I bought the my phone, a Z10 from an electronics shop, so it is unlocked and not dependable on any carrier, and I paid premium.
The first time I turned on the phone, BB Link did update the OS, though some minor stuff.
Now I see carriers around the world are pushing the 10.2.1 update to their phones but what about me ? I do have a sim card of a carrier (Vodafone) wich did not release the update yet, but WHY DO I need to wait for them to push the update ? Why can't I just update the phone trough Blackberry Link ?
Is there a good reason why the update can only be made if the carrier the phone runs on make it available ?
I find this very stupid !

BlackBerry has never pushed updates direct to the user, always from the carrier.
So, no, there is no public documentation on that.

Why is the Amber update different for ATT and China? For Lumia 520, it could tap to unlock but, in china, this function is disappeared disappear. Could you give an expain as the matching hardware, otherwise I think it's a definately discriminatory to Chinese.

Double tap to unlock is not available for any 520, anywhere in the world. See link below. You should always check first before making allegations.

Why haven't they done a patch for those of us who have not updated and prefer to use iOS 6?

Totally agree with Andy. Apple needs to support its users whether or not they decide to update to iOS 7.
The reviews from i Pad 3 owners (like me) is that when they've updated to iOS 7 they've experienced latency and sluggishness. Why would I ruin a perfectly good iPad by updating to iOS 7?
Please let me know where I can find a patch for iOS 6.
