Why is my Lion crashing - kernel panics?

I am having repetitive kernel panics. Support did not fix the problem. Following the instructions in their link did not fix the problem. Removing all peripherals and then restarting and quitting one at a time showed that one of the external hard drives connected through a powered hub may have been the issue so I moved it to the MAC desktop. Still crashing. Here is the report. What is causing this and how to fix it????

I'm also a bit curious to know where you read those reviews --
I googled ClamAV reviews, some were in places like CNet.
You also asked:
Did your iMac come with Lion pre-installed, or did you upgrade it afterward? If the former, did you migrate from an older system. Just wondering if you still have some PPC only executables hanging around.
We bought this iMac in August and I believe the store installed Lion, but I may be mistaken about that. The receipt doesn't specify. It may have been on the computer already. What are "PPC only executables?"
BTW, removing Sophos did not make any difference. It crashed again last night. This a.m.  I have a G-mobile external drive from the USB port and will quit and re-open the iMac several times to see if that is the problem. If not, I'll try it with other devices (one printer and external hard drives) one at a time. I have already tried it by disconnecting all of them and then reconnecting one at a time but that didn't seem to isolate the issue.
Could it be the wireless modem? It is a few inches behind the computer, and sometimes we have reception problems on other devices (iPod touch, iPad, bluetooth DVD player, etc.) and I have issues on this iMac with the connection at times, although it is a new, recent, and upgraded high speed modem and when Century Link tests it from their service center they say it's working fine.
I really appreciate everyone's help...just wish I knew more about this stuff.

  • Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac

    Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
    In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning  of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro.
    I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5  days
    However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
    Most commonly the computer would freeze,  briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
    It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
    I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
    These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different,  work loads, ect.
    I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
    Things I have done:
    -Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    -Reset SMC
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Ran apple diagnostics
    -Stress tested processor using "yes" command
    -Tested ram with memtest
    Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated!
    ~P

    Hello iPhil,
    I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your new-to-you MacBook Pro. It sounds like you have been on the right track in your troubleshooting. If you continue to have these intermittent but persistent kernel panics, you may find the information and additional troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):

  • Aperture 3.1.2 Crashes/Kernel Panics

    This is more an "FYI" post than a request for help ...
    After suffering through multiple crashes and kernel panics while using Aperture 3.1.2, I talked with Apple Aperture Pro support. When I mentioned that the crashes occurred when I was editing 2400 DPI scans of 35mm slides, I was told that this could cause Aperture to crash and that I should use a lower DPI scan setting. This advice was both surprising and annoying since 1) scanning slides at 2400 DPI is not that unusual and certainly preferred over a lower scan DPI for digitally archiving 35mm slides; 2) I had already scanned over 2,000 slides at 2400 DPI and do not have the time nor inclination to redo them; and, most importantly, had bought and used Aperture because it was Apple's "Pro" photo application (and should be able to handle a 2400 DPI scan). Thus, all of my crashes, kernel panics, etc., seem to have been due to either a bug in Aperture and/or a very "non-Pro" inability of Aperture to handle a "Pro" job.
    Hopefully, Apple will soon upgrade Aperture to be a truly "Pro" application.
    (A longer version of trying to track-down the cause of this issue is available at <https://discussions.apple.com/message/15007376#15007376>)

    Bob,
    Tech support didn't mention RAM, although I discussed both hardware and software characteristics with him at length.
    Knowing that Aperture uses a lot of RAM and CPU, I generally don't have any other apps running while using Aperture.

  • Macbook Air Mid-2013 crashes (kernel panic) when I stream videos online, why?

    Hi!
    I have an MBA mid-2013, and I had it since September 2013, running the Haswell processor as well. I never had any problems or crashes, even after upgrading to OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. Until recently (few days ago), I started streaming videos online on a website called www.crunchyroll.com in HD mode (1080p). I could get up to 4 kernel panics within a span of a few minutes. Once the mac reboots, it goes into a kernel panic almost right away. I have streamed videos before on Hulu and Netflix and other websites alike without any problems. I was thinking it might be a graphics card problem, so I switched from 1080p to 720p, I immediately got less kernel panics (1 time in 20mins). I do not know if this is relevant though. Also, I did not have any external devices plugged in at the time the kernel panics happened.
    I was able to save 2 kernel panic reports, they are slightly different on the "backtrace" part so I do not know which one is more accurate.
    Can anyone please check this out for me? I would be really happy if there is any fix available, so that I do not have to take my mac to the apple store.
    Thank you very much!!

    I just got 2 kernel panics in a row now, while running MS Excel. I never had any problems running this program until the kernel panics started a few days ago. While I have the MS Excel running, I also had Safari open with 8 tabs of just regular websites (i.e. Facebook, blog, sephora, etc.)
    I copied the latest report:

  • Why did I have a kernel panic?

    I was in the process of disconnecting my Nikon D40 (a procedure I have done many times without incident). Usually I shut the camera off and pull out the USB connector once the volume disappears from my desktop, with no problem. This time, as soon as I shut off the camera, I got a strange "You must restart your computer" message I'd never seen before (I've had the computer almost 3 years). Discovered this was a "kernel panic" message.
    Why did my computer do this? The only thing that's changed on it recently is that I installed Adobe Air although I don't believe I was running any Air applications at the time. At the time I was running Photoshop Elements, Nikon Picture Project, Firefox and a feed reader called Feedpopper. Again I have run all these programs without trouble for several years.
    Here is the message from panic.log:

    Perhaps try it again and see if it was just a bad alignment of the planets last time. You could also post more of the log to see which thread it was that actually crashed and what was happening. In the meantime this will keep you busy:

  • My MBP running Lion, has 'kernel panic' - when i try to restore a new os from the time machine, it does not cure the problem.

    Question:
    My 2009 macbook pro has 'kernel panic' - it is running Lion - I have visited the nearest Apple Store twice, & tried repeatedly to re-install Lion, then recover from Time Machine.
    However, the problem persists - anyone have any ideas??

    Can you post the kernel panic report?
    Open Console > System Diagnostic Reports
    To find the panic. Post in your reply.

  • OS X keeps crashing/kernel panics

    In the last week I have noticed a sudden increase (from like 'never' to daily/every other day) in kernel panics/OS X crashes. The only things I have done in that time frame has been updating iTunes and Safari. I'm usually using one or the other when everything will just freeze on me and force me to do a hard reboot with the power button. Last night I started back up in verbose mode and had another kernel panic during that process. When I finally do get back in to OS X, the error reporter is called up and lets me know that "OS X was restarted after it quit, etc...". Here is the latest error report:

    Hi Justin Mack;
    I think I see something in your kernel panic dump. At the bottom it says, "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: fsck_hfs" which would seem to indicate that OS X was attempting to check you hard drive. Then a couple lines before that it says, " No mapping for frame pointer" and "Backtrace terminated - invalid frame pointer 0xbffffcc8". What I think this is trying to say is that you have some serious problems with the directory structure on that disk. I would suggest trying DiskWarrior to see if it can repair the damage for you.

    I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, late 2008. I got it with Leopard, and I had absolutely no problems at all with it until I stupidly upgraded to Snow Leopard in September 2009. Since then my computer crashes a lot. Here is a list of problems I've had so far, most of them on seemingly random occasions:
    - Kernel Panics (happened around 2 times, both while rendering a video in Final Cut Pro)
    - Complete system freeze where the screen freezes on the last thing displayed, the last sound played keeps looping (if I'm in the middle of a Skype conversation or listening to music, for example) and nothing will react (including mouse, caps lock, eject key, the system won't even sleep when I close the lid) requiring a hard reset by holding the power button (happened at least 3 times). This has sometimes happened when all I was doing is listening to music on iTunes, I wasn't even touching the computer, and all of a sudden I just hear the last half second of music looping forever.
    - Complete freeze where the mouse would still move, but the system would reboot automatically after a few seconds (happened once or twice)
    - Reboots without any warning (happened around twice)
    Basically these are my major problems, and all of these have happened in 10.6.1 and 10.6.2, except the kernel panics which have not happened (so far) since I updated to 10.6.2.
    I have tried repairing permissions, it didn't change any of the above behaviours.
    This is what I noticed:
    These problems happen regularly, around one or two times week.
    _*The problems only seem to happen when I set my computer to use the dedicated graphics instead of the integrated graphics*_ via "System Preferences > Energy Saver > Higher Performance". If I set that setting to "Better Battery Life", then the problems don't seem to happen at all.
    However, I use Photoshop and Final Cut Pro a lot, so I need to set the graphics to +Higher Performance+. Dedicated graphics is one of the reasons I bought this computer, so setting it to Better Battery Life isn't a solution for me.
    As I've said before, I'm running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and my machine is a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and processor of 2.53 GHz.
    I have performed an upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard, as opposed to a clean install. Trying a clean install of either Leopard or Snow Leopard will be my last resort if nothing else works, however, I am asking you whether you can think of anything else to solve my problems without having to do a clean install, as it would require lots of work and it would be a big hassle for me.
    Thank you very much.

    I am having the EXACT same problem, however I have an iMac (24"display, 2.93GHz, 4GB ram.) I think I've narrowed it down to Quicktime, but can't figure out a solution. I have both Quicktime Pro (7.6.3) and the version that comes with snow leopard - Quicktime 10.0.
    Here is a list of applications which have been running during a freeze, shutdown or restart.
    -iDVD
    -Quicktime 7.6.3
    -iMovie
    -Safari (only when playing video)
    -Adobe soundbooth (one time only)
    I've tried everything from permissions repair to a clean SL re-install to everything in between.
    Any ideas out there??

  • OS X Lion gets kernel panic when connecting via CIFS

    A customer of ours has problems with OS X Lion clients that get kernel panic when connecting via CIFS (Novell OES server).
    Any new on this issue?

    They use the latest OES version with all the latest sp and patches applied. They have even tested with the an OES 11 beta with the same result. The OS run as a VM on VMware in 64 bit mode attached to a SAN. Has also been tested as a plain install without VMware. The Lion version is 10.7.2.
    This is how the problem occurs:
    1. Mount the CIFS share - no problems
    2. Use the share - no problems
    3. If the network connection drops you get a message that the CIFS volume has disappeared and you are asked to unmount it. When you do that you get a kernel panic. You can force the problem to happen by turning of WiFi.
    So it is OES2 but which version (SP1, SP2, or SP3)? Interesting as I'd only heard of this with NetWare 6.5.
    Do you (and anyone else experiencing this issue in this thread) know if this has recently started happening, perhaps after the latest November 2011 Scheduled Maintenance patches were installed?
    I'll hopefully be able to do some testing tomorrow but in the meantime I've asked Novell ...
    HTH.

  • Mountain Lion - random kernel panic

    Hi folks,
    My Mountain Lion upgrade has resulted in random kernel panics. I've unistalled all apps that have been cited as potential problems and also tried reinstallign Mountain Lion from both the recovery partition and by redownloading from App Store.
    Here is the latest Console panic log...

    Best,
    Keith..

    I have exactly the same problem, my MAC restarted at least a zillion times since I installed. Its so annoying and especially when I am using this MAC for my work. Its really screwing me up like crazy!! I never repented so much in my life for buying a software from Apple.
    Below is the error I am getting each time.

  • Mountain Lion - endless kernel panics - can anyone diagnose?

    Been having issues with Kernel Panics since Mountain Lion came out. I downloaded and installed a few months ago and got Kernel panics, so I formatted and sent to apple and they replaced the RAM, which did absolutely nothing. So I went backwards to Snow Leopard, and then recently came back now that we're on 10.8.2 to use Mountain Lion and I am still getting kernel panics. Can anyone diagnose where I could begin as far as removing software, etc, from this kernel panic? I'm pretty comp savvy but the kernel panic appears an endless stream of nonsense to me:
    PS: You will notice in this kernel panic I have some FireWire audio interface connected. Just to be clear, this kernel panic can come with or without any periphreals plugged in

    Thanks Thomas. I will upgrade my Motu8Pre drivers, but I am certain it is not the definitive problem. here is an earlier kernel panic where I did not have my Motu8pre connected via Firewire:

  • Retina Macbook Pro: Constant Crashing, Kernel Panics, Etc

    I've heard a lot of talk about how certain apps are crashing these new Macbook Pros. I'm here to tell you that it's not the apps: it's the hardware.
    At least, that's what casual observation has taught me.
    Here's my story:
    Bought a new, fully-loaded Retina Macbook Pro. Immediately, apps start crashing left and right: Evernote, Reminders, Pages, etc.
    Even worse, the computer had multiple kernel panics in the first week of purchase, none of which could be attributed to Chrome, Skype, or any of that nonsense. When I ran the Apple hardware test, everything came up fine, but I wasn't so sure, so I  took the computer to the Genius Bar, who recommended that I erase and reinstall. I did that, and I just experienced another crash today. I was in Pages, and the entire computer froze, although I could move my cursor.
    Put simply, I dropped almost four thosuand dollars on what should be the best computer on the planet, but is actually a piece of crap.
    No matter what app I'm running, whether or not I reinstall, the machine continuously crashes.
    Either that means that something is fundamentally broken about the OS, which doesn't seem to be the case given that it's working fine on other machines, or there is something wrong with these new Retina Macbook Pros.

    Not really. If you read the terms of use for this forum it says something to the effect of Questions. No Ranting and or X Y or Z.
    I feel for you and gave the only option you have, if you are within that 14 day period.
    You could try calling Apple Customer Service and simply stated that you want a refund even though you are just outside that 14 day time period as you are very dissatisfied with the system. If that doesn't get you anywhere you could file a complaint with your CC company.
    You are right, It Is a Piece of KWrap. These forums are littered with problem post of all kinds for the Retina MBPs.
    Not only that but the Retina models are basically irreparable. They are Throw Away computers as most parts are either glued to the case parts or soldered to the main Logic/mother board
    Personally I have bought my First and Last Mac and with that the last Apple product I will ever buy.
    Good Luck.

  • Frequent crashing, kernel panics

    Hi, I've just cloned my G4 FW800's start up disk (using Carbon Copy Cloner) onto a SATA Raptor Drive/Sonnet PCI card.
    In the main, it seems to be running very smoothly, except I keep getting Kernel Panics (3 or 4 a day). These are the ones that come with the multi-lingual "You need to restart your computer" box. They SEEM to be more frequent when using MIDI gear.
    I'm also running 2 separate internal drives for Storage, including one specifically for audio. Apart from the Raptor Drive/PCI card, the only new hardware is 2 strips of RAM.
    What's my best way of dealing with this problem? Could it be connected to using Carbon Copy Cloner?
    Thanks, Andy.
    G4 FW800 1GB/QS2001 1.25GB RAM, (OSX .3.3), iBook G4 (1.2ghz, 1GB RAM, OSX.3.5)   Mac OS X (10.3.3)   3 int.HDs, 3 Lacie ext.HDs, Logic Pro 6.4, RME Fireface 800. 4GB iPod Nano.

    OK, now I'm tearing my hair out, and starting to despair that I'll ever have a stable computer again...
    Since the Christmas break, the Kernel Panics still generally have no pattern, happening in various apps, sometimes if I've only got a Get Info open, seemingly at random.
    (That said, if I just leave the computer idle for 30 mins or so, the screensaver takes over, followed almost always by another Kernel Panic. But if I put it to sleep manually, it's fine and wakes fine...)
    Here's a list of what I've done so far...
    Swapped the RAM out;
    Run Disk Utility after virtually every crash;
    Run Disk Warrior on all local disks;
    Started up from Install disc to repair StartUp (Raptor) Disk permissions;
    Disconnected Firewire & USB peripherals;
    Run Apple Hardware Test (which I now know from AppleDoc 25415 was never going to help);
    Run Open Firmware & reset NV-RAM and P-RAM;
    Run Applejack & Memtest in single user mode;
    Run Disk Warrior on all local disks (again!);
    Restarted pressing 'opt-com-p-r' to reset NV-RAM and P-RAM (again!);
    Run DU (again and again!);
    And nothing seems to have made any difference, still getting random Kernel Panics.
    I've just run MacJanitor ... and now I'm crossing fingers.
    Assuming MacJanitor also fails to make any difference, what else can I try out before I start kicking it?
    Thanks for any further ideas...

  • Safari, Firefox or Chrome are always crashing + kernel panics

    Hello everyone,
    I come back (again) to you because i'm having problems with my MacBook Pro.
    Few days ago my computer starting to sound an alarm... I was forced to shut it down manually.
    But now, I can't even browse the internet -> Safari, Chrome or Firefox are always crashing (the report in console mentions something about WebProcess but I can't figure how to fix it). This thing happens every 2 minutes when browsing...
    Also, when looking at console I saw that I had lots of reports concerning mds_DATE_USER.crash
    The Macbook Pro is also sometime restarting himself & i get the y message in grey in all languages "Your comp. restarted because... blablabla" -> Console says Kernel Panic...
    Do you have any idea on idea on this problems (maybe related ?)
    Thanks a lot !

    Hello Linc,
    I do not know what are "shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports." ? So I supposed you asked me to send the kernel panic report and not "mds_ .crash" "report_ .crash" or "web process_ .crash"...
    Here it is :

  • Why do i get frequent kernel panics on my G4?

    I got bought this powermac g4 and it had no os, so what i did was formated the HD-took about 4 hours to format and wipe clean the HD. After that i did a fresh install on OS X 10.4-that went well. Then i did the updates to make it from 10.4 to 10.4.11 and thats when i got the 1st kernel panic. I shutdown and replaced the ram (thinking that would be the problem) with two chip set of 512MB making it 1GB. That still didnt fix the issue i still got another kernel panic. Next i reseted the PRAM and no luck still kernel's appear. I cant figure out what the problem only that maybe it could be the HD. Well the HD is a SCSI type so it makes it an external HD ( that what the system profile tells me) and i do not have an internal ATA in the machine to test it out. I need some help im frustrated i would love to use my g4 instead of my g3.

    Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
    Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
    Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
    May be a solution on one of these links.

    To check that RAM isn't a problem, look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM
    Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
    A couple of Tips.
    1. Before you install an update, ALWAYS repair permissions using Disk Utility. (Did you do this?) Then after the update is installed, repair permissions again.
    2. I only use the Software Update window to determine what System related software is available for update. I don't use the auto update feature because there could be the possibility of a data "glitch" during download, which results in system startup/operational problems. Then I go to Apple site & download the update file. Then I install it.
    For an update to an application, like iTunes, I use the auto update. If there is a problem with the update, you can reinstall the application, but it doesn't cause startup problems.
     Cheers, Tom
    PS - Did you check to see if your Mac required a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
