Why is Scanner final?

Question

Any ideas why the new Scanner class is final? I'd like to do something like
public ScannerSE extends Scanner
public int nextInt(int lo, int hi)
{    int i = this.nextInt( );
if (i < lo || i > hi)
{    throw new InputOutOfBoundsException("Expected a number between " + lo + " and " + hi + " but got " + i);

There is a link at the top of the page called special tokens.
I don't know anything about the Scanner class. You need to ask the person who wrote the class why it is final.
